1 . In this modern age, most of us have forgotten to be patient and get angry very quickly over minor things like a traffic jam, a baby crying and such things. It often seems so easy to get what we want right away that when we have to wait even a little while, it seems like we are waiting for ages. We used to be happy to wait 10 - 15 minutes it took to reheat food in the oven(烤箱),but now we’re impatient when waiting two minutes it takes in the microwave.
With the convenience provided by modern society, is patience still a virtue(美德) in the fast-paced world? To begin with, I'd like to share the meaning of the word “patience”. Generally it means being able to tolerate delay without getting impatient. However, it isn't necessarily a passive activity. It takes an active behavior, knowing when to take action and when not to.
So I would argue that patience is still -and always- a virtue. Sure, I used to be one of those who often stared at the microwave for the full two minutes it took to heat my food. And in the end, the food tasted bad. If I had had the patience to heat the food properly in the oven, I would have enjoyed a delicious meal.
Actually the benefits of patience go beyond just heating up our food. Patience is an exercise in self-control which shows that we can exercise good judgment. Lack of patience can cause us to make wrong decisions that negatively affect our health and happiness, waste our time, put us under a lot of stress and affect our relationships in a very negative way.
Everything in life happens for a reason. Sometimes we face an obstacle(障碍) because we need to grow in ways we didn't realize. It's not always obvious when that was happening, but with patience we will soon see clearly why it occurred and what we were meant to learn from it.
Taking time to think about our actions and being patient are a small price to pay when we determine the best possible solution to any problems.

I can't quite believe what happened today. I was on my way home as usual, dreaming about which I was going to do at the weekend, when I had heard shouts coming from the road. I looked around and saw I was the only persons there. 1 walk over to the entrance to the road. There in front of me was a young girl struggle with a man of about forty. I judged the situation quite quickly but was deciding whether to stop them. The man shouted angry in a loud voice. He tried to push the girl against the wall, screaming at him to give him her bag. Without hesitation, I called police. They arrived for a minute and look the man away.
4 . Many people especially children, do not have good handwashing habits. Children may think that it is a tiresome thing to do. To help solve this problem, two entrepreneurs (企业家) from India created a product to turn handwashing into a fun activity. Amanat Anand and Shubham Issar created a device called the SoaPen. Issar said, “The SoaPen is a soap that kids can draw with. It's a fun way to teach kids how to wash their hands.”
AS the name suggests, the SoaPen is a pen made out of soap. The children draw on their hands with the soap pen and then wash it off. If they do not spend enough time washing it off, the colors remain on their hands.
To get their product on the market, the two women joined a business development program in Washington D. C. called Halcyon Incubator. Mike Malloy is the program manager at Halcyon Incubator. He said turning a great idea into a product that can help others is not easy. “There is kind of an up-and-down- roller coaster ride in the journey of being an entrepreneur. One day things are going great; the next day things are terrible. And if you' re doing that alone, it can be really, really difficult.”
Halcyon connects what it calls “social entrepreneurs” with business professionals. These experts help the entrepreneurs sell their products. Anand said that with this business help, they were able to do more than they would have by themselves.
Anand and Issar said their goal is to donate one SoaPen to children of poor families for every three they sell at full price. The product could have a real influence on public health. The United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund, UNICEF, reports that 1.5 million children die each year as a result of diarrhea (痢疾). UNICEF says good handwashing could decrease that number by 40 percent.

6 . “Beauty isn't about having a pretty face,” begins a motivational quote. “It's about having a pretty mind, a pretty heart, and a pretty soul. Oh, and pretty nails!”
That may be Angela Peters' motto. Last July, Peters, rolled her wheelchair into a nail salon (沙龙) at the Walmart shopping center in Burton to have her nails done. But Peters, who has cerebral palsy (脑瘫), was turned away. The salon told her that they were afraid it would be too difficult to properly paint her nails given that her hands kept shaking. What was meant to be a day of beauty for Peters was now a disappointment.
A Walmart cashier about to go on her break happened to see this. Ebony Harris recognized Peters as a Walmart regular. “She's just like everyone else. She wants to look pretty. So why can't she?” Harris said.
Harris approached Peters. “Do you want me to do your nails?” she asked.
A smile spread across Peters' face. “Yeah!” Harris led Peters into the supermarket, where they shopped for nail polish. They settled on a color that would catch every eye. They then made their way into a neighboring Subway, found a table for two, and started. Harris gently took Peters' hand into hers and carefully began painting her nails. “She moved her hands a little bit, and she kept saying she was sorry,” Harris said. “I told her, ‘Don't say that. You're fine.’ She makes me look at life and appreciate it much more than I have.”
Watching it all with surprise and admiration was Subway employee Tasia Smith. Smith was so taken by the scene that she wrote about it on Facebook. “She was so patient with her,” she wrote. “Thanks to the Walmart worker for making this beautiful girl's day!”

9 . Sometimes fishing ships disappear: Captains turn off the radios that broadcast their locations, leaving regulators wondering whether the ships are fishing illegally. Now, researchers have shown that albatrosses(信天翁)bearing small detectors can find these doubtful ships, even in the middle of the open ocean. After a 6-month study with the large seabirds, the researchers say that more than one-third of ships in the southern Indian Ocean are fishing illegally.
“These are animal police,” says Boris Worm of Dalhousie University. “You’re empowering animals to survey their own environment, ”Worm says. “That’s pretty cool.” The method could also help albatrosses themselves, which can be killed when they get caught or accidentally eat fishing hooks. The researchers will be there on time.
Illegal fishing is a major concern for environment biologists, especially in remote areas. Over the past decade, scientists have studied the problem with data from automatic identification systems (AISs) on ships, which send their identity, location, speed, and direction to satellites. But AlSs can be turned off. Researchers suspect that fishing ships turn off AISs when they are fishing illegally or want to prevent competitors from knowing where they are getting a good catch.
Albatrosses make good spies. The birds, which live on fish, can spot a fishing ship from as far away as 30 kilometers. Some species fly hundreds or thousands of kilometers while hunting. Between December 2018 and June 2019, the birds met 353 ships. Those locations were sent to the lab in less than 2 hours. If they did not match the locations of ships with an active AIS, the team knew the ships had switched it off. In international waters, 37% of detected ships had their AlS switched off and fished illegally.
Although the albatrosses can detect ships, they cannot track them over longer distances, one scientist says. He says, “What you need to do is to look for patterns to take pictures as evidence.” More albatrosses will be arranged in March and April around the Prince Edward Islands in the southern Indian Ocean to reveal the illegal fishing.

10 . Last weekend marked one of the nicest days so far this spring.
It was warm with a tiny breeze; the sun penetrated through lightweight sweaters to warm the skin; the male choir was warming up, and the graduates were walking around the lawn behind the throng of six-thousand-plus observers.
With all of the parents, sisters, brothers, grandparents, aunts and uncles, the state university was a center of activity. My nephew was going to receive his bachelor’s degree. Who would have guessed that four years would go by so quickly?
As the crowd of freshly elegant candidates wandered, joked, hugged and chattered behind the platform, I heard several cell phones ring. There were several nonsensical(无意义)conversations going on with the accompanying giggles of the not-quite-mature students, but then one conversation in particular caught my attention.
“Yes, Grandma, I’m really graduating. I can’t believe it, either!I never thought I’d be here today, you know? Really!Like, I know it!Yes, it’s a very special day...Hold on, we’re lining up...Oh wow, they’ve got hundreds of balloons they’re going to release!Yes, Kelly’s here...Okay, I’ll give her your love…here we go!Gran, I’m graduating!…Love you too, Gran. I’m so glad you could be here with me!”
