A realistic drama A Lifelong Journey has become a huge hit on TV and online recently.

The show’s director Li Lu,
2 . Consumers in the U.S. spend billions of dollars a year on gifts wrapping. Two colleagues and I wondered whether all that time and effort is actually worth it. So we conducted three experiments to explore the impact of gift wrapping.
In the first experiment, we involved 180 students, who were given a gift—a coffee cup with the logo of one of two NBA basketball teams, the local Miami Heat or rival (竞争对手) Orlando Magic. Every participant was a fan of the Heat and they obviously didn’t support the Magic. We gave half of the students a desirable gift, while the others received something they disliked. Finally, half of the gifts were wrapped neatly, while the rest looked sloppy (凌乱的).
We found that those who received a sloppily wrapped gift liked their present significantly more than those who received a neatly wrapped gift—regardless of which cup they got.
To understand why, we asked another set of students to report their expectations about either a neatly or sloppily wrapped gift. Results showed that expectations were significantly higher for the neatly wrapped gifts. However, receivers of the neatly wrapped gift reported that it failed to live up to their expectations, while those who got the sloppily wrapped gift said it surpassed (超过) their expectations.
In our final experiment, we surveyed 261 adults and asked them to imagine receiving either a neatly or sloppily wrapped gift. This time we instructed half of them to imagine the gift was from a close friend, while the other half believed it came from an acquaintance (熟人). Then we revealed the gift and asked them to rate it.
When it came from a close friend, receivers ended up liking the sloppily wrapped gift more. However, for the gift from an acquaintance, receivers preferred it when it was neatly wrapped. This occurs because these participants used the wrapping as a cue for how much the gift-giver values their relationship.
So if you’re stressed over gift wrapping this holiday season, consider saving yourself effort and money by wrapping your friends’ gifts haphazardly (随意地). But for someone you don’t know quite as well, it’s probably worth it to show that you put in some effort to make it look good with all of the beautiful bows.

3 . Working out which colleges to apply for can be one of the most difficult decisions any high schooler can face, but Alena got it all out of the way early as she’s only 13 and already has her medical school offer.
The application process for the medical school was “super stressful”, but she was adamant to follow her dreams regardless of what anyone said, even if it was “no”. “If I could say anything to another little girl that looks like me: never stop believing and don’t give up on your dreams just because somebody tells you ‘no’. You can do anything that you put your mind and your heart to,” she said.
Alena is the youngest African American person to get into a US medical school, and the second-youngest person overall.
Alena didn’t just wake up one day and decide to go to the medical school while in middle school — she’s a child genius. By the time she was 11 she’d already taken several high school courses. When Alena turned 12, she graduated from high school and is currently enrolled (注册) in online classes at Arizona State University.
If all goes to plan for Alena, she’ll start studying to be a doctor at age 15, in 2024, and graduate when she’s 18 when other kids her age are preparing for their freshmen year at college. Although she’s so young, age is “not a big deal” to her and she is just a normal kid.
She explained, “I’m in honors choir, I’m in cheerleading and I play soccer. I hang out at the mall with my friends like a 13-year-old does, and I also go to the movies and go swimming with them. I’m very structured and very disciplined.”

6 . Have you noticed that many people can spend a lot of time comparing prices while shopping online, but always make decisions casually in the critical moments of their life?
To explore this issue, we must first understand three concepts: strategy, tactics(技术), and guideline.
Simply put, “strategy” is “what to do”, that is, to choose a direction. The “tactics” have to be lower than strategy, which means that they decide “how to do it” after the strategy has been established.
Strategy is a ruler’s learning. For each person himself, whether to consider strategic issues determines whether you are the master of your own life. Maybe you can live successfully according to the guide given by others, but is this life really worth it? This is not a life, but a performance, because you actually have no dominance in yourself.
A.We constantly make choices. |
B.Take choosing college major for example. |
C.These people may be reliable but they can’t create things. |
D.Many people seem to focus only on the “guideline” level. |
E.The key to strategy is making choices and bearing its consequences. |
F.At first glance, they seem to be similar, but in fact they are totally different. |
G.“Guideline” is even lower, referring to doing things as others have done them. |
7 . You might be abusing your battery, especially if you have a habit of leaving the screen on, shutting down apps or throwing it in your bag on a particularly freezing morning. Smartphones are designed to keep apps open in the background. Forcibly closing them may satisfy that little part of your brain that wants to keep things neat and tidy, but because it takes more juice to start an app fresh than to wake it up, you’re beating up on your battery every time you do it. Stop!
Avoid letting the temperature of your battery powered device dip below 32 degrees Fahrenheit or rocket above 95 degrees. In either case, damage can occur. It will lower-in some cases, dramatically—the life of your battery.
Petri Hayrynen, senior product marketing manager of Global Smart Devices at HMD Global, said that charging your phone to 100% may seem like a good idea, but if you’re using a high voltage (高电压的) charger, it can put a pressure on your battery. Instead, he said to pull the plug at 80%-90% for best usage and choose to charge often.
“Old nickel (镍) batteries had a memory effect, which meant that if you didn’t charge them from 1-100%, they started to ‘forget’ their maximum capacity. But it is quite different today. As for the modern-day lithium (锂) batteries, the most stress is to put on the battery when charging or discharging them fully; both reduce the charging cycles and overall battery life cycle,” Hayrynen said. He explained that people should do “more fast top-ups during the day,” instead of charging smartphones overnight.
Try to keep the battery above 30% or so, letting it discharge occasionally to calibrate the sensors. That will keep your battery healthier and longer. Besides, to get the absolute fastest charge, toggle on Airplane Mode after plugging it in.
1. Why should you avoid shutting down apps too often?A.To save your battery. |
B.To keep things organized. |
C.To wake them up more easily. |
D.To make them run in the background. |
A.100%. | B.80%-90%. | C.70%. | D.30%. |

8 . A new speciality is available in Wyoming. It is fresh and cheap—but probably a little smelly. Last month it became legal for Wyomingites to collect roadkill that they accidentally hit themselves. Not all animals are fair game. Grizzly bears, some grey wolves and endangered species are forbidden.
Although some may feel embarrassed at the idea of pulling a deer off the road and onto the dinner table, the law has several benefits. First, roadkill is a source of fresh meat for poor rural communities who may not otherwise be able to afford it. PETA, a radical animal-rights group, argues that eating roadkill is healthier and more moral than buying meat raised for slaughter (屠宰). Second, allowing residents to harvest roadkill themselves may cut down on the time the creatures spend on the road.
Not everyone is licking their lips. Some opponents fret that people will end up eating rotten meat. “It’s really the burden of the person who chooses to collect roadkill if they eat it or not,” says Sara DiRienzo, of Wyoming Game and Fish. Others show the concern that the laws will encourage hunters to use the roadkill programme as cover for killing animals they should not.
After almost a decade of failing to pass the bill, Dan Zwonitzer, its frequent sponsor, credits his success to recent support from his colleagues in the legislature (立法机关). State lawmakers from rural Wyoming managed to turn the roadkill-harvest programme into a libertarian cause célèbre. “There were some complaints from people who had hit animals or had seen other people hit animals, says Mr Zwonitzer, “and they were like, ‘Well, heck, it’s dead...I don’t want the government telling me I can’t take something I accidentally hit if the meat is good’.” He adds that he is not about to collect roadkill himself. But for those so willing, there are cookbooks offering ways to serve up moose or mule deer.
1. What can we learn about the new speciality?A.It is fresh and delicious. | B.It exists for long in Wyoming. |
C.It can be a goat shot by a hunter. | D.It doesn’t cover all the roadkill. |
