1 . Sitting back in my seat, I can’t quite believe that I’m about to travel along the railway that many foreign experts claimed was “impossible”. The train has been racing along steadily since it left Xining. All this time, the song “Sky Railway” has been_________inside my head. The words “railways like massive dragons are winding among the mountains” seem particularly_________as I travel across the “roof of the world”.

I was one of the people who came from all parts of China to work on this railway._________years to complete, the Qinghai-Tibet Railway is a record of all of our efforts to_________the most difficult engineering challenges. How to_______the delicate ecosystem was among the top concerns.

The first_________to catch my eye is the splendid Qingshuihe Bridge, the world’s longest bridge built over permafrost. Look! A group of Tibetan antelopes is moving under the bridge, with some stopping to eat grass at their_______. Thirty-three passages have been built under the railway to allow the animals to move safely and freely in their natural_________. Wild animals such as these Tibetan antelopes have now been using these_________for years. They seem totally__________that we are speeding past at over 100 kilometres an hour.

To prevent__________to wetlands and grasslands, 675 bridges with__________about 160 kilometres were built between Golmud and-Lhasa. We even moved 140,000 square metres of wetland to a new area in order to protect its distinct ecosystem.

The journey has been flying by, and before I know it, we have reached Tanggula Station.__________at over 5,000 metres above sea level, this is the__________railway station in the world. In locations such as this, the thin air,__________weather and high levels of UV radiation presented perhaps the greatest__________ for railway workers. To make sure we stayed__________, several oxygen-making stations were constructed. We were also able to enjoy__________breaks in lower areas.

As we pass Cuona Lake, I feel a sense of pride and achievement. Using thousands and thousands of sandbags, we built a twenty-kilometre wall along the lake to protect it from construction waste. Cuona Lake is so close to the railway that I want to__________and touch its pale blue mirror-like surface. Water birds playing in the lake, and cattle and sheep wandering the grasslands bring the scenery to life.

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau has been attracting people’s admiration for centuries. Now, thanks to our efforts, passengers from all over the country have been enjoying these magical landscapes. I am proud that we built our “impossible” railway, and did so with the care that the environment__________. It truly is an extraordinary “Sky Railway”.

3 . When Garvison flew from Chicago to Atlanta earlier this week with a baby in her arms, she saw the unhappy looks of her seatmates.

“As soon as we got on the plane at 5:30 am, it was very quiet and it was a full _________,” Garvison wrote in a Facebook _________ , “I noticed that the two seats next to me were _________ and this couple looked annoyed and I could tell by their body _________ that they weren’t _________ sitting next to Rylee, my baby.”

“Miller，” she wrote, “you will never understand how happy this act of ____________ has made my family. It brought tears to my eyes while I sat there and watched you and Rylee sleeping next to ____________. I just couldn’t believe how that ended up ____________ and how caring you were to us. 6 . Last night I was driving from Harrisburg to Lewisburg, a ________ of about eighty miles. It was late and I was in a hurry. However, if anyone asked me how fast I was ________, I’d say I was not over-speeding. Several times I got________ behind a slow- moving truck on a narrow road, and I was holding my fists tightly with________.

At one point along an open highway, I________ crossroads with a traffic light. I was alone on the road by now, but as I ________ the light, it turned red and I braked to a stop. I looked left, right and behind me. Nothing. No cars, no suggestion of headlights, but there I sat, waiting for the light to ________, the only human being for at least a mile in any________.

I started________ why I refused to run the light. I was not afraid of being________, because there was obviously no police-man around, and there certainly would have been no________ in going through it.

Much later that night, after I________ a group of my friends in Lewisburg and climbed into bed near midnight, the question of why I’d stopped for that light________ me. I think I stopped because it’s part of a contract we all have with each other. It’s not only the________ but it’s an arrangement we have, and we trust each other to ________ it: we don’t go through red lights. 7 . On Christmas of 2017, I was born again. We like to spend our Christmas holidays somewhere warm abroad, and that year we _______Uganda. Nature, wildlife, and sunny days were a_______when it was so _______ and dark in Europe. Life was beautiful, and we had a rental car and a busy schedule ahead to explore the country.

This is where this short travel story turns into one of my most _______travel experiences. At Murchinson Falls National Park, we had a car accident. I lost_______of the car, and it rolled over, destroying windows, chassis (底盘), and the engine. But we were alive! My right arm was_______injured, but we_______ to walk to our lodge (旅馆)，not far inside the_______. In the lodge, I was_______to learn that there was a pretty decent American hospital in Masindi that was just a one-hour drive away. Moreover, one of the lodge’s guests was a nurse who ________to the wound while we were waiting for the taxi. The hospital took care of us and after a couple of injections and stitches (缝合), I was ________to head to our new hotel in Masindi; however, my wound required daily________and more injections, so we were________to stay in town for a few days.

The town’s highlights were the market and our ________visit to the hospital, so we________looking for the small things, ________mod with the medical staff and the people in the market, and learning more about their customs.

We learned to slow down. When we were allowed to________ we took a road trip through the country to see something else. We did not care about our travel bucket ________anymore—we were________, and we wanted to enjoy Uganda’s unique nature and its people. In the end, our Uganda trip was not about the places that we saw, but the people that we met. It was travel for________ more than sightseeing.

8 . An elementary school in Scotland gave its students a special present. Instead of being asked to do different kinds of homework or book reports, the children did acts of _________, which is a much more _________ lesson.

The children _________ Galsoil School in Clonty performed these kind acts in December and _________ their acts in writing or pictures in a Kindness diary.

In the project, the teachers _________ the students to do kind deeds for an elderly neighbor or a friend who is feeling _________, any act that helped to _________ someone’s day.

The students were also encouraged to write kind notes to each other that were read at a _________ every week and all the classes got together to discuss and _________ a school-wide project to help the community during the holiday season.

The children made a lot of __________ to their grandparents and to seniors in the community to __________ with them over the phone, relieving their loneliness. What the children have learned about kindness is far more __________ than reading, writing, and math. Even the youngest students have __________ much.

9 . I remembered Ricky came back to see me ten years after he was in my class. He told me how I had _________ changed his life.

Ricky often looked out of the window during one of my ninth-grade history classes early in my teaching_________. He was quiet, and his good grades and mild manner were the reason_________ I did not move him away from the seat by the window.

One day, I _________ over his shoulder and quietly asked, “What are you looking at? You look out of this window during every class.”

He said, “I am looking at the band.”

According to Ricky, I said, “If you like the band so much that you have to look at them during this class every day, I want you to go down to Mr. Overby (the band teacher) and tell him that I_________ you. The next day Ricky went to Mr. Overby and told him I had sent him and he wanted to be in the band. He _________ that he did not know how to play any instrument.

10 . The day I met Hani Irmawati, she was a shy, 17-year-old girl standing alone in the parking lot of the international school in Indonesia, where I teach English. I agreed to work with her _________ a volunteer basis. For several months, Hani woke each morning at five and caught the city bus to her public high school.
