When a thought has found words
Poetry is the forgotten child of literature. Few people read it for pleasure. In Western high schools, poetry is seldom taught because it is considered to be out of date and have little to do with the life of today’s students.
However, compared with the situation in the West, poetry is still an important part of the curriculum (课程) in China. Recently, the Ministry of Education has increased the number of ancient Chinese poems for students to memorize and recite, from 14 to 72. Why is it important to learn poems?
First of all, poetry is a necessary part of learning traditional Chinese culture. It is a path to understanding your history and your society. It is also the key to understanding the thoughts and feelings that are common to everyone but that we may be unable to express, the joy of Li Bai dancing with the moon, for example. Everyone has feelings of joy, love, loneliness, sadness and even anger, and a good poem can put those feelings into words and bring us self-understanding.
Poems can also express beauty. In a few short lines, even something common can become beautiful. Here is a poem called Fog by Carl Sandberg: The fog comes/on silent haunches (弓腰) /and then moves on. Yes, a fog does move smoothly, silently and like a cat, and Sandberg catches that feeling and image, and makes it beautiful.
Of course, to really enjoy poetry, it has to be read aloud. After all, a poem is really just a song without music. Most ancient poems, like Homer’s Epics (《荷马史诗》) and China’s Book of Songs, were spoken for hundreds of years before they were written.
The American poet Robert Frost said, “Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.” You are lucky that you now have seventy-two poems to learn!

Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help weeping (哭泣) sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding (责骂) from her mother. Wandering aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was not possible for her, since she had nothing with her. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?”
“Oh, yes. . . but I don’t have money on me…” she replied.
“That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man. “Come in.”
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.
“What is it?” asked the man kindly.
“Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny as she wiped her tears. “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless (无情的) compared to a stranger!”
Hearing the words, the seller smiled, “Girl,do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thank me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were baby. Can you remember the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude to her?”

3 . Peter, a 5-year- old boy, showed such great interest in seashells that he would rush to pick them up with his 3-year-old sister, Shirley. They screamed out their joy as Peter collected his treasure into his pockets. For Peter, sea shells lay shining on the peaceful beach, waiting for him, just like stars twinkling in the sky. As waves touched them, they seemed to be flowers blooming in gentle wind.
One day, Peter was wandering through a market with Shirley with some shells in his pocket. Suddenly Peter found his younger sister was lagging (落后) behind. He stopped and looked back, finding Shirley standing in front of a toy shop and staring at something with great interest. The boy went back to her and asked, “What do you want?” Shirley pointed at the doll, wearing a smile on her innocent face. Peter held his younger sister’s tiny hand, walking into the shop. He tiptoed to reach for the doll, and like fulfilling an elder brother’s duty, gave the precious doll to Shirley. Holding tightly the doll, the sister was very happy.
The shopkeeper was watching everything and enjoyed seeing the mature (成熟的) behavior of the boy. Now the boy came to the counter and asked the shopkeeper, “How much does this doll cost, sir?” “The shopkeeper was a cool man, who had suffered from something in his life. So he asked the boy with love, “Well, what can you pay?” Peter reached into his clothes for money that was intended for these two little kids’ breakfast. Having counted the money, Peter put it with care on the counter, asking again, “Sir, is it enough for my little sister’s doll?” The amusing scene just in front of the shopkeeper eventually brought a smile to his face. Shaking his head slightly, he replied, “My boy, I am afraid it seems not to be enough.”

A Mother’s Day Surprise
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

THE VIRTUAL CHOIR
Imagine having the opportunity to sing together with hundreds of other people while you are at home alone. You can do this in a virtual choir. Virtual choir members record themselves while they perform alone on video. These videos are uploaded onto the Internet, and then they are put together into one video that you can see online—a virtual choir. Anyone can take part in a virtual choir from anywhere—all you need is a video camera and an Internet connection. You do not even need a studio. A virtual choir helps connect ordinary people together. Many people do not have close friends or contacts who have the same interest in music. Many others do not have the chance to join a local choir. A virtual choir enables them to add their voices to those of other individuals and become part of the global community. It has proved to be a positive influence on the lives of many people. As one virtual choir member said, “Music helps me to, forget my problems. With music, I become someone else.”
The virtual choir was the idea of awardwinning composer and conductor Eric Whitacre. Born in the USA on 2 January 1970, Whitacre began studying music at the University of Nevada in 1988.He fell in love with Mozart’s classical music when he sang for the university choir[6]. Moved by this music, he said, “It was like seeing color for the first time.” He graduated from university in 1995, and then received a master’s degree in musical composition from the Juilliard School in New York in 1997.Over the next 10 years, Whitacre’s original compositions began to become quite popular among choirs and singers. This led to the creation of the virtual choir.
In 2009,Whitacre received a video of a girl who was singing one of his works. Inspired, he asked his fans to make videos, which he then joined together into one performance. His first virtual choir, “Lux Aurumque”, had 185 singers from 12 different countries. It has received millions of views on the Internet. Since then, the virtual choir has become a worldwide phenomenon. Whitacre’s next effort was the Virtual Youth Choir for UNICEF, which was first seen on stage on 23 July 2014 in the UK. Altogether, 2,292 young people from 80 countries joined in to sing Whitacre’s song “What If”.
The virtual choir is a wonderful way for people around the world to sing with one voice and thus make the world a better place.

Mercy for a thief
A frantic call came into Jimmy Gilleece’s bar this past March. A newly married woman who had spent the afternoon at the dive beach bar, couldn’t find her wallet. She didn’t care about her ID, credit cards, or $150 in cash—but her wedding ring was tucked inside.
Gilleece, the barkeeper, spent several hours watching surveillance footage(监控录像). He noticed a young man in a hoodie approach the bench that the woman had just sat on. He put something in his pocket, and walked off. Gilleece posted a clip on the bar’s Facebook page. Within hours, Gilleece got a text from 17-year-old Rivers Prather, who’d heard about the post from his sister. Prather told Gilleece he’d done it because he hadn’t eaten in two days. He said he saw the ring but thought it was fake, so he took the money and threw the wallet off the public docks into the ocean.
Gilleece, unsure whether he believed Prather, told the teen to meet him at the docks. There, after talking with the teen, Gilleece knew Prather wasn’t getting along with his family and had been living in the woods for a week. Gilleece thought Prather was more of a kid than a criminal. He thought he had to help him somehow. But the police were already on the case, and because of the missing ring, Prather could probably be sent to the jail.
The next day, Gilleece had two local divers search the waters where Prather had thrown the wallet. A policewoman was waiting for them there. More than an hour passed, with no sign of the ring. Prather looked nervously at the water. And then a diver popped up. In his hand was the wallet, and inside was the ring. Prather jumped up excitedly. Even the policewoman was happy. When Gilleece called the wallet’s owner, she burst out crying.
“Most people would have given the clip to police, and he chose to help me,” Prather told CBS News. “I say thank you to him every day.”

One late afternoon, Tina was driving on a highway when a severe snowstorm hit with no sign before. In a short time, the heavy snow, coupled with the strong wind, turned everything into white and made the road extremely dangerous.
Tina later found out that this kind of storm is called a “Saskatchewan screamer”, which comes on extremely fast with high winds. It’s really frightening and deadly to be caught in such extreme weather.
Unable to see the road clearly, Tina had to stop her car and call 911. The operator told her that phone calls for help kept flooding in and all the rescuers had been called out. She suggested that Tina should wait out the storm in her car rather than risk driving on or going out. She took Tina’s information and told her that an officer would call her back. Tina waited anxiously for almost two hours, but nobody called her yet to check in. “The storm showed no sign of stopping. What was worse, it was getting dark. I couldn’t see anything outside the car since the snow had covered all the windows. The wind was still howling and the temperature was getting lower and lower in the car. I had no idea whom I could turn to for help,” Tina later wrote in a Facebook post. “Alone and cold,I began to panic, worrying about getting hit by an oncoming vehicle, getting buried in a snowbank, having my tailpipe blocked by the snow... I was really worried I couldn’t ever make it home to my family."
That was when Tina realized that it was no use waiting passively for help. She decided to do something herself. So she took out her cellphone, logged on to the Google Map and determined her location. She found online a neighborhood Facebook group for the area that she was passing through and shared a comment about her trouble with her location marked on the map. Then all she could do next was sitting in the car, praying someone could make a response to her as early as possible.
Fortunately, Tina’s request reached 80-year-old retired rescuer Frank.

8 . My Big Solo(独唱)
When I was in middle school, my family moved to Seattle. As a girl of shy nature, I had to take a fresh start to fit into the complicated life.
One sunny day, my school announced an exciting event, a talent show for the local food bank. Students were encouraged to show their unique talents. Excitement filled the school as everyone began preparing for the big day. Deep down, I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to participate. However, my self-doubt held me back, “I don’t have any special skills to share.”
Days turned into weeks, and the talent show approached. One day Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me. “How about singing together in the talent show?” She grinned, “I heard you singing a tune, along the way home. I can’t help following you here.” Gosh, I couldn’t believe my ears. Since Emma had the world’s prettiest voice, I felt like being favoured by fortune.
My mum heard our conversation and her face lit up. “A big event.” Then she suggested, “Why not practise right now upstairs? I believe you’ll be a perfect match.”
Emma and I kept rehearsing (排练) almost every single day after school. As the days went by, I was feeling pretty good about our act. But the day before the talent show, Emma called that she had an acute stomachache and was unable to perform.

What would I do next and what would happen in the end?
Maybe you are an average student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessary so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here’s how.
1) Plan your time carefully. When you plan your week, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc, then decide a good, regular time for studying. Don’t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment. A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realise what is happening to your time.
2) Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this place quiet, and free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or TV. When you sit down, focus on the subject.
3) Make good use of class time to listen to what the teachers say. Really listening in class means less work later. Taking notes in class will help you remember those important items.
4) Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over notes. Review the important points that the teachers mention in class. If you know what the teachers is going to discuss the next day, reading that material will become meaningful.
5) Develop a good attitude about tests. The goal of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end even if you don’t pass a test, so don’t overly worried.
There are certainly many other good methods that are suitable for you. With time going by, you will discover more gradually.

10 . Have you ever wanted to be a college student? If so, then you must know that you have to be a smart student. This means you have to achieve excellent grades in high school. The following tips may be of great help to you.
Stop spending most of your free time watching TV or surfing the Internet. Your spare time can be spent in studying and reviewing the knowledge your teacher has already spread. Record important notes that your teacher explains in class. This will help reduce your preparation time for tests, which means you could start studying early. You should also read through your notes carefully because most of the things on your notes are likely to appear on the test paper.
Ask your teacher for help if you don’t understand some of the knowledge. Don ‘t be afraid of asking questions, or you will not get a better understanding of the knowledge.
Study for your tests as soon as possible. If you finish it fast, you will have more time to relax and do your favourite things. In addition, waiting until late at night will only make things harder because you may feel tired.
