文章大意:这是一篇说明文。短文介绍了恰当的提问已经成为一门失传的艺术,分析了原因以及鼓励人们恰当的提问。

1 . Proper questioning has become a lost art. The curious four-year-old asks a lot of questions-incessant streams of “Why?” and “Why not?“ might sound familiar-but as we grow older, our questioning decreases. In a recent survey of more than 200 of our clients, we found that those with children estimated that 70-80% of their kids’ dialogues with others were comprised of questions. But those same clients said that only 15-25% of their own interactions consisted of questions. Why the drop of?

Think back to your time growing up and in school. Chances are you received the most recognition or reward when you got the correct answers. Later in life, that motivator continues. At work, we often reward those who answer questions, not those who ask them. Questioning conventional wisdom can even lead to being distanced, or considered a threat.

Because expectations for decision-making have gone from ”get it done soon“ to ”get it done now“ to ”it should have been done yesterday, “ we tend to jump to conclusions instead of asking more questions. And the unfortunate side effect of not asking enough questions is poor decision-making. That’s why it’s vital that we slow down and take the time to ask more and better questions. At best, we’ll arrive at better conclusions. At worst we’ll avoid a lot of rework later on.

Aside from not speaking up enough, many professionals don’t think about how different types of questions can lead to different outcomes. We should lead a conversation by asking the right kinds of questions, based on the problem we’re trying to solve. In some cases, we’ll want to expand our view of the problem rather than keeping it narrowly focused. In others, we may want to challenge basic assumptions or confirm our understanding in order to feel more confident in our conclusions. Therefore, asking the right kinds of questions is what counts in achieving a goal.

1. What does the underlined word ”incessant“ in paragraph 1 most probably mean?
A.Constant.B.Random.C.Noisy.D.Innocent.
2. What accounts for the decline of questioning in adulthood?
A.One poses a threat to the company if they ask questions.
B.Those who ask questions don’t necessarily get positive feedback.
C.One doesn’t have as many opportunities as they did in childhood.
D.Those who question popular beliefs don’t have interpersonal skills.
3. What can we infer from paragraph 3?
A.Redoing is unavoidable despite thoughtful questions.
B.Better questions can surely result in desirable outcomes.
C.Some people think it can’t be too fast to make a decision.
D.We’ll make reasonable decisions as long as we ask questions.
4. What might the author continue talking about?
A.Proper questions that should be raised.
B.Important goals that we are to achieve.
C.Right kinds of answers to the questions.
D.The reasons for the loss of questioning art.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了Andy Kong创业的过程。

2 . Andy Kong has worked very hard to get to where he is today. He credits becoming a millionaire by 20 to his strict Asian parents who tutored him at a young age by working for the family.

Kong, of Danville, Virginia, started working when he was only nine. English wasn’t a strong suit for Andy’s parents, and that’s where he was able to assist his family the most. After school and on weekends he would help out at their family-owned restaurant and nail salons. Not only did he do the labor work, but he was also involved in creating online ads. This was his introduction to the world of online business.

Andy started his Amazon business in the eighth grade. When he learned about Amazon Dropshipping (代发货模式) from a kid he saw on Instagram, he got inspired and decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, the store eventually got shut down because he was impatient with the growth. Instead of considering it a failure, he viewed this experience as a life lesson and learned from his mistakes. Meanwhile, his parents never stopped trying to talk him into focusing on school and their retail business.

“The biggest challenge when starting a business is getting someone to believe in you,” Andy says. He pushed through and did things for himself even when his loved ones discouraged it.

In 2019, Andy met his now business partners, and together, they created an Amazon management company called Project WiFi. This Project has proven to be extremely successful. They currently help over 55 clients run their online businesses, and plan to help many more in the future.

When asked about the secret to his success, Andy says, “Learning to sacrifice whether that’s family, friends, or soccer game for a single goal is the only way to succeed, rather than attempting multiple things. If it’s worth doing then it’s worth doing well with no shortcuts.”

1. Why did Andy work in his parents’ shops at a young age?
A.Because he could earn some pocket money.
B.Because his parents weren’t fluent in English.
C.Because his parents could help with his study.
D.Because he could get access to the Internet.
2. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.A new online business model.B.Results of working impatiently.
C.Difficulties in Andy’s career.D.Andy’s tense family relationship.
3. What does Andy think contributes to his success?
A.His early working experiences.B.Lessons learned from his failures.
C.Gaining other people’s trust.D.Focusing on the thing you choose.
4. Which of the following can best describe Andy Kong’s personality?
A.Committed and generous.B.Open-minded and motivated.
C.Creative and faithful.D.Hard-working and sociable.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章介绍野生动物并不会轻易的攻击人类,除非它们太饿了,或是它们的孩子受到威胁。

3 . Some people think that all wild animals are dangerous. Actually, very few of them will attack a man if he leaves them alone. If you met a lion or an elephant, I suppose you would run away; but even a lion will keep away from a man unless it is very hungry. Lions and tigers only kill and eat men when they have grown too old and too weak to catch their usual food, such as deer and other small animals. If you saw a wild elephant, perhaps you would be frightened. Elephants usually run away at once unless you attack them. Some animals get very frightened if they only smell a man; some take no notice at all but quietly walk in another direction. Wild animals only attack hunters when they are afraid that the hunters mean to harm their young ones, or then the hunters shoot at them and make them angry.

A.unless men try to run awayB.if they are too old and too weak
C.if they are able to get enough foodD.however men act towards them

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文,文章主要讲述了一只猫妈妈叼着刚出生不久的小猫出现在医院,寻求医生的帮助,猫妈妈的爱让她的幼崽们得到了及时的治疗的故事。

4 . Whether it be a person, an animal, or even an insect, a mother’s instincts (本能) are never wrong. This idea rings true for a mother cat who acted fast and sought out help when her kittens were in trouble. This mother cat’s quick thinking may have just saved her babies.

In the urban district of Izmir in western Turkey, a cat walked into a regular hospital holding a kitten in her mouth. As the mother cat moved through the hospital, people were surprised to see such a sight, but let her pass. The mother cat asked for help, crying for a long time. She was familiar to the hospital staff, who had been leaving her food and water outside, but they were unaware that she had given birth to kittens.

The mother cat was concerned for her young because they weren’t able to open their eyes. After the doctors looked at the kittens, they noticed that they were suffering from eye infections, one of the doctors recalled, “We consulted with vets (兽医) and gave medicine as described. When the kittens opened their eyes a short time later, we were excited.” Later, they were sent to an animal hospital for further care. The cats are now up for adoption and will hopefully find loving forever homes.

When it comes to mother cats and kittens, kittens completely depend on mothers for the first few months of their lives. Because they are blind and almost deaf until about two or three weeks old, the mother cat must protect them from any threat or danger. Without the mother cat’s help, the kittens may not make it to adulthood.

As shown by the mother cat in Turkey, a mother’s love and protection knows no bounds. Whether the mum is a human or a cat, mothers will always look out for their babies and make sure they are safe and healthy.

1. Why did the mother cat show up in the hospital?
A.To beg for food.B.To get her babies treated.
C.To ask the patients for help.D.To give birth to her babies.
2. How did the doctors help the baby cats?
A.They built them a home.B.They adopted all of them.
C.They operated on them immediately.D.They gave them the right medicine.
3. What makes newly-born cats dependent on their mothers?
A.Their physical state.B.Their eating habit.
C.Their appearance.D.Their behavior.
4. What can we learn from the story?
A.Cat has nine lives.B.One good turn deserves another.
C.Love makes a difference.D.Mothers know their kindness only when they raise their children

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章讨论了音乐对不同年龄人群的积极影响,包括帮助痴呆症患者、缓解国际学生的焦虑,以及作为日常激励和安慰的工具。

5 . Highly emotional music causes networks in the brain to release dopamine. This brain chemical plays a role in feelings of pleasure. It also turns on the brain’s motor network that makes us want to move. That physical response to a strong beat can be used to help people with brain-related disorders, research has shown. It aids their ability to time their body’s movements, which can help them with speech issues or trouble moving around.

Olivia Brancatisano, a researcher at Bond University in Robina, Australia, studies music and aging. She found that music can offer a number of benefits, from movement and emotion to communication and thinking. That led her to find music-based therapies (治疗) that might aid people who struggle in these areas.

Older people who have dementia (痴呆) may struggle to remember things. But they did better on mental (精神的) tasks while listening to music they knew and enjoyed. The selected music had to be highly emotional and personal, Brancatisano notes, Listening brought back memories and improved their attention. Since then, she has developed the Music Mind and Movement program for people with dementia.

Music helps young people, too. International students in Australia took part in a recent study at the University of Queensland in St, Lucia. Students may often feel lonely while far from home. Those in the Tuned In program, however, learned to better manage their anxiety using music. They also got better at identifying their emotions. That helped them take action when they were struggling.

The benefits of music seem to cover people of all ages. “We use it to meet basic human needs and to improve our emotional states,” says Brancatisano, “Now, more than ever, we have the ability to engage in music in a variety of ways. We can use it as a tool in everyday life to energize and comfort us.”

1. What is the purpose of the Music Mind and Movement program?
A.To help students keep their spirits up.
B.To remind us to run as often as possible.
C.To benefit old people with a mental illness.
D.To show patients how to forget bad memories.
2. How did music affect the international students in the study?
A.They felt more anxious in class.B.They tended to be less homesick.
C.They worked together to write music.D.They developed a popular music app.
3. What does Brancatisano suggest in the last paragraph?
A.It’s a good practice to listen to music.
B.We struggle to meet our basic needs.
C.Music enables us to remain young.
D.There are plentiful free songs online.
4. Which is the most suitable title for the text?

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,介绍了志愿者招募活动中,他们需要哪些优良品质。

6 . As you begin creating a volunteer recruitment (招募) plan, you may be thinking, “the more, the merrier”.     1    , and during the recruitment process ensure you find volunteers with the right qualities to add real volunteer value to your team.

First and foremost, a volunteer should care about the people or animals who need his help. This means the volunteer is only concerned that his efforts are making a positive impact on the lives of others.     2    . Lending a hand at homeless shelter, for example, doesn’t give a volunteer the right to discuss the situations of the people who need the shelter outside of the volunteer group.

3    . Volunteering for his favorite cause is something he looks forward to doing, something he feels a need to do. His enthusiasm is so genuine that he tells other people about the work he does and encourages other people to get on board.

A good volunteer is also reliable and dependable.     4    . He does what he says he’s going to do and fights through obstacles to make it happen. He also doesn’t lower his level of quality output because he isn’t being paid for it.

It’s important for a volunteer to be a self-starter. However, it’s equally important for him to know how to cooperate with other volunteers with passion.     5    , everyone involved is in it for the same purpose: to help those in need.

A.The man must be dedicated to his position

文章大意:本文为一篇说明文。文章介绍了“成长心态”,以及每个人实际上都是固定心态和成长型心态的混合体,并随着经验不断进化;我们要让孩子更适应或大或小的失败。

7 . I used to tell my children that they were smart, because I was impressed by their rapid growth. I remember clearly watching my daughter figure out how to build a Lego house that would stand up on its own, and thinking: Look at this tiny architectural genius.

But decades of research now suggest that we should not tell our children they’re “smart” when they do impressive things. When I first heard it, I felt instinctively annoyed. But after I dug into the research, I was persuaded. It all goes back to something called “growth” mindset (心态), a term developed and popularized by Carol Dweck, a professor of psychology at Stanford. Professor Dweck believes that we can change our abilities through effort and strategy. The alternative to a growth mindset is a “fixed” mindset — the idea that our abilities are inborn and can’t be changed. When we praise our children for being “smart,” based on victories like doing well on a test, we’re unconsciously encouraging them to believe that if they do poorly or make mistakes, they’re not smart.

It’s not just what we say that matters, but how we tolerate our children’s failures. A 2016 study by Dweck showed that parents’ “failure mind-sets” affect their children more than their views on intelligence. In other words, if parents think that failure is shameful, their children are more likely to be afraid of making mistakes. The study concludes that everyone is actually a mixture of fixed and growth mindsets, continually evolving with experience. Whatever we say or don’t say to our kids, the key is to get them more comfortable with failures big or small.

It’s helpful for kids to understand that you make mistakes and learn how they happen. When you chat with them, you can describe what you learned, or how you strategized a solution. “You don’t have to deny you have negative emotional reactions,” Dweck said. “We, as a society, don’t do that enough because we feel embarrassed when we make mistakes.” But if we discuss our missteps more and explain how we overcame them, our children can learn to do the same.

1. What did the author initially think of the research’s advice?
A.Convincing.B.Advanced.C.Inaccessible.D.Unacceptable.
2. According to the Dweck, children with a growth mindset tend to believe ______.
A.smartness is the key to success
B.difficulties in daily life teach them a lot
C.their abilities can be improved through hard work
D.they are impressive due to their good grades on tests
3. What does Dweck suggest parents do?
A.Affect the children via their own experience.
B.Hide their negative feelings from children.
C.Remind children to avoid making mistakes.
D.Pay attention to develop children’s intelligence.
4. What does the passage mainly tell us?
A.The effect of a fixed mindset on children.
B.“Being smart” doesn’t prepare kids for failure.
C.The importance of being smart in family interaction.
D.“Being smart” is the power of praising in children’s growth.

文章大意:本文为一篇议论文。文章主要介绍了很多品牌推出了大码衣服,却只是为了迎合尺码包容这一趋势,而并非真正的满足客户的需要。品牌如果真的想要取得成功,就需要关心消费者的价值观。

8 . The needs of plus-size consumers have long been the elephant in the room of the fashion industry until body positivity and fat acceptance movements promoted the slogan (口号) that large-bodied people are not those who are left behind. This size-inclusive (尺码包容) trend has become so popular that it is influencing mainstream culture. As a result, fashion brands have finally decided to extend their size ranges. In 2022, the plus-size market grew twice as fast as the standard size market in both North America and the UK.

Yet, many consumers say fashion brands broadening their ranges are not truly inclusive. “Inclusive sizing means that all bodies are included in fashion, not just the ones who fit in standard sizes,” says Marie Southard Ospina, a UK-based journalist who covers body-image issues. “However, what many designers do right now is pick a number that they think is big enough to include plus sizes and stop. This is even more disrespectful.”

Researchers also criticize that some brands are just taking advantage of the trend. “Brands that used to promote so-called perfect bodies in their advertisements are now trying to get in on the trend by adding a few sizes. It doesn’t feel like they really care about plus-size people,” says Tom Burgess, analyst in fashion industry. “If brands cared about large-bodied consumers, then it wouldn’t have taken until now to acknowledge that they exist,” he says. “It gives the impression that companies are just trying to gain a share of the market without a real commitment to the community.”

The fashion industry must go beyond merely producing clothing in a range of sizes if they hope to succeed with a body-diverse world. The whole industry has to connect on a personal level with consumers. That involves showing shoppers that they are seen, understood and important to brands. “Consumers care about values, and so they want to buy from brands that reflect the values they believe in. Everyone should enjoy the same range of fashion options,” says Ludovica Cesareo, professor of marketing at the College of Business in the US.

1. What does the author indicate by mentioning “the elephant in the room”?
A.The demands of plus-size consumers have been ignored for ages.
B.The demands of plus-size consumers are of high cost.
C.A problem may do harm to the environment and animals.
D.A problem needs enough time and space to be solved.
2. What is true size inclusion in the eyes of many consumers?
A.To promote plus-size market.B.To broaden fashion brands.
C.To enlarge clothing to standard sizes.D.To consider and satisfy all bodies.
3. For what do researchers mainly criticize some brands?
A.Their designs.B.Their quality.
C.Their intention.D.Their advertisements.
4. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.Fashion brands have truly achieved size inclusion, yes or no?
B.Plus-size consumers should also be stylish, for or against?
C.Fashion industry explores in body-diverse market, all or nothing?
D.Brands should reflect consumers’ values, true or false?

9 . Pigeons have a bad reputation. Maybe these birds’ familiarity makes them an easy target: They are common residents of every continent, save Antarctica. Some people think pigeons are dirty or diseased, as they spend chunks of their days pecking at trash. Others might ignore them entirely, or perhaps go so far as to call them “rats with wings.” But Rosemary Mosco, a science writer, cartoonist, and naturalist, believes these creatures deserve more respect. “We’ve gotten them super wrong,” she says.

In Mosco’s latest book, A Pocket Guide to Pigeon Watching, she shares her positive views of the species that fell from grace. Once highly valued for their meat, and way finding abilities, pigeons are now largely rejected by human society. But Mosco, a lifelong city-dweller, has always found them fascinating. “If you do watch them, you’re just entranced,” she says. Her travel-sized book details pigeons’ coloration, field marks, and anatomy (解剖结构). But it’s more than a field guide. It’s also an informative account of pigeon history, biology, and behavior, complete with Mosco’s delightful illustrations.

Because pigeons’ fates are so connected with our own, pigeon history closely mirrors ours. Pigeons were distributed across the globe due to centuries of European exploration and colonization. In North America colonists hunted the native Passenger Pigeon for meat and destroyed its native forest habitat, driving it to extinction. Wherever humans domesticated pigeons, some escaped and went wild. Today’s city pigeons are descended from those birds.

Mosco says she’s met more birders who like pigeons than those who hate them. Birders, with well-developed observation skills, can understand pigeons’ entertaining behavior, she says. Plus, if pigeons aren’t enough of a draw on their own, there could be predators, such as hawks or falcons, nearby.

She wants all her readers to be kind to pigeons. But she also hopes that some will follow their pigeon fancy and become hooked on birding. “It’s my secret plot,” she says. After reading her book, you may agree with her that pigeons are as worthy a spark bird as any other.

1. What do the underlined words “fell from grace” mean in paragraph 2?
A.Live in danger.B.Push the envelope.
C.Play with fire.D.Get out of favor.
2. How does A Pocket Guide to Pigeon Watching differ from a traditional field guide?
A.It covers detailed pigeon science with illustrations.
B.It shows the author’s views of a particular subject.
C.It features numerous beautiful images and diverse cultures.
D.It conveys some views of theories accepted widely.
3. What is Rosemary Mosco’s hope for her readers?
A.To learn more about pigeon history and biology.
B.To be fond of birding and follow their pigeon interest.
C.To stop hating pigeons and start respecting them more.
D.To understand pigeons’ behavior and appreciate their beauty.
4. What is the text?
A.A chapter of a book.B.A book introduction.
C.An animal story.D.An academic paper.

文章大意:本文是说明文。文章主要介绍了无人机灯光表演作为一种替代烟花表演的新型娱乐方式的优势和特点,同时也提到了这种表演方式所需要的技术和安全保障措施。

10 . Fireworks shows are increasingly criticized for their negative environmental impact — they are noisy, polluting, and wasteful. Concerns are regularly raised around their impact on sensitive wildlife populations and the increased risk of wildfires.

These and other factors have led many people to consider replacing fireworks displays with alternatives — and drone (无人机) light shows are perfectly positioned to fill the gap.

Drone light shows are performed by illuminated groups of drones that arrange themselves into various aerial formations. Almost any image can be recreated in the sky by a computer program that turns graphics into flight commands and communicates them to the drones.

However, creating a system that can be flown safely and repeatedly requires a lot of clever engineering work. The flight crew uses a detailed dashboard display on the ground station to prepare drones for flight and continuously monitor status. The drones themselves carry multiple radios operating simultaneously, away from busy WiFi frequencies, to ensure communications are maintained even in busy and noisy radio environments.

Shows are flown by certified pilots. Prior to every show, checklists are used to make sure everything is in order: drones are fully operational, batteries are charged, and the flight area is clear. Once these checks are complete, the pilot presses GO and the drones take off on their mission!

Regardless, the transition from fireworks to drones will happen gradually. A number of factors have limited the uptake of drone shows:

•High cost

•Need for regulatory approval

•Expensive and limited insurance options

•Labor intensive operations

•Lack of efficient show design tools

•Safety requirement

1. What are the advantages of drone light shows over fireworks ones?
A.They can interact with viewers.B.They are eco-friendly and creative.
C.They can be easily operated.D.They improve the network quality.
2. What can help monitor the show process?
A.A dashboard display.B.Videos from a website.
C.A special battery.D.A specialized WiFi.
3. What can we learn about the drone show from the text?
A.Its operation is labor-saving.
B.Its safety causes growing concern.
C.Its design needs public involvement.
D.Its popularity is limited by many factors.
