文章大意:这是一篇记叙文,文章讲述作者从小生活在农场里,繁重的农场工作使作者下决心远离农场去求学深造,后来又开始怀念农场生活。

1 . I grew up on a dairy farm. The particular life location to which I got assigned—“stuck” is a better word if you’ve ever been there — was a small family-owned-and-operated outfit.

I remember the Christmas when our main hired hand dropped out of the work rotation. Sixteen and the oldest of the kids left at home, I was called on to fill in. Halfway through the first day, I realized I had never noticed exactly how much that worker did. For five days I either milked or slept, fed calves (牛犊) or slept. I have to admit this gave me a deep appreciation of how hard my parents worked day in and day out for 30 years, and that understanding solidified my determination to do whatever it took to not stay on that dairy farm my whole life.

Eventually, my determination paid off. I got into college. Now, I no longer have to worry about my father’s voice yelling, “Stace, come out here! We need help!” To be honest, I’m grateful. But at the same time, I also don’t have a compelling reason to be up in time to see the beauty of a sunrise. Nor do I have the opportunity to dance with my sister in the dairy barn, work side-by-side with my dad and hear the old stories.

Now, there are whole stretches of days when I don’t feel any pressing need to even go outside. And I can go months without petting an animal or watching in amazement at their keen sense of the environment around them. Instead, I have neighbors within shouting distance but who feel like they live a planet away.

Eighteen years I lived my life on that dairy, not really knowing there were people who didn’t get up and go out and work together to get the same overwhelming tasks done day after day. Sometimes I wish I had never found out there were.

1. What did the author come to understand on her first day working on the farm?
A.She couldn’t manage so much work.
B.Her parents sacrificed a lot for her family.
C.The tasks were dull and challenging.
D.The work was more demanding than expected.
2. What motivated the author to pursue further education?
A.Lack of opportunities on the farm.
B.A passion for academic study.
C.Her dissatisfaction with farm life.
D.Encouragement from her parents.
3. How does the author feel about her life now?
A.Mixed.B.Regretful.
C.Content.D.Relieved.
4. What can we infer about the author from the last paragraph?
A.She has become tired of her daily routine.
B.She misses the connections she had before.
C.She regrets leaving her family behind.
D.She has lost interest in the beauty of nature.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章讲述了德克萨斯州大学奥斯汀分校的研究人员在地震预测方面取得的进展,特别是他们开发的AI算法在地震预测方面的应用及效果。

2 . Artificial intelligence (AI) is showing promise in earthquake prediction, challenging the long-held belief that it is impossible. Researchers at the University of Texas, Austin, have developed an AI algorithm (算法) that correctly predicted 70% of earthquakes a week in advance during a trial in China and provided accurate strength calculations for the predicted earthquakes.

The research team believes their method succeeded because they stuck with a relatively simple machine learning approach. The AI was provided with a set of statistical features based on the team’s knowledge of earthquake physics, and then instructed to train itself using a five-year database of earthquake recordings. Once trained, the AI provided its prediction by listening for signs of incoming earthquakes within the background rumblings (隆隆声) in the Earth.

This work is clearly a milestone in research for AI-driven earthquake prediction. “You don’t see earth-quakes coming,” explains Alexandros Savvaidis, a senior research scientist who leads the Texas Seismological Network Program (TexNet). “It’s a matter of milliseconds, and the only thing you can control is how prepared you are. Even with the 70% accuracy, that’s a huge result and could help minimize economic and human losses and has the potential to remarkably improve earthquake preparation worldwide.”

While it is unknown whether the same approach will work at other locations, the researchers are confident that their AI algorithm could produce more accurate predictions if used in areas with reliable earthquake tracking networks. The next step is to test artificial intelligence in Texas, since UT’s Bureau TexNet has 300 earth-quake stations and over six years worth of continuous records, making it an ideal location for these purposes.

Eventually, the authors hope to combine the system with physics-based models. This strategy could prove especially important where data is poor or lacking. “That may be a long way off, but many advances such as this one, taken together, are what moves science forward,” concludes Scott Tinker, the bureau’s director.

1. How does the AI forecast earthquakes?
A.By identifying data from the satellites.
B.By analyzing background sounds in the Earth.
C.By modeling data based on earthquake recordings.
D.By monitoring changes in the Earth’s magnetic field.
2. What does Alexandros Savvaidis intend to show in paragraph 3?
A.The ways to reduce losses in earthquakes.
B.The importance of preparing for earthquakes.
C.The significance of developing the AI prediction.
D.The limitation of AI algorithms in earthquake prediction.
3. What will the follow-up research focus on?
A.Conducting tests in different locations.
B.Applying the AI approach to other fields.
C.Building more earthquake stations in Texas.
D.Enlarging the database to train the calculation accuracy.
4. Which words can best describe the earthquake-predicting technology?
A.Stable but outdated.B.Effective but costly.
C.Potential and economical.D.Pioneering and promising.

3 . How to Avoid an Internet Addiction

It may seem like everyone surfs the web these days. But if you can’t have interest in other aspects of your life because of the Internet, you may be on your way to an Internet addiction. You might fear you’re the only one who has experienced that feeling.    1     Luckily, there are some ways to avoid living your life in front of the computer.

    2

More and more people in the world are becoming addicted to the Internet, and you are not the only one with this problem. So do not be embarrassed. Just be brave to admit that you are on your way to an Internet addiction. And then find others with the same problem and help each other beat it.

Set aside limited time for computer use.

Make sure not to turn it on too many times a week. If you have a laptop, make sure to put it somewhere that you can remember but not somewhere that you see every day. Try keeping the lid closed when you are not using it.     3       If you have a desktop PC, try not to go near it or put something over it like a sheet.

Call people instead of sending instant messages or texts.

If you are free on weekends, call friends and ask them to go outside to do something you enjoy, like playing a sport. This will take your mind off the computer.     4

Use an alarm clock or timer (计时器).

Before using your computer, decide on a time limit such as 30 minutes. Set the clock or timer and make sure that you get away from the computer when the time is up. Alternatively create a shutdown timer on your desktop.     5

A.Being addicted to it is quite normal.
B.Admit you are at risk of an addiction.
C.The truth, though, is that it’s quite common to be an addict.
D.When the computer is not looking at you, you are less likely to use it.
E.This can be programmed to shut down your computer after the set time.
F.If you have a problem on weekdays, phone your friends or ask for help in person.
G.This will prevent you from using the Internet so often or going on to another page.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文,文章从四个方面解释了为什么出汗有好处。

4 . Sweating may not be your favorite thing to do, but it is necessary.     1    . Here are four research-backed reasons why this salt-based fluid can benefit you.

·Sweating is good for your skin.

Sweat is known to cool the skin, bringing toxins (毒素) to the surface and giving the skin a healthy glow. Research shows that sweating can increase and maintain skin hydration. However, leaving sweat on the skin for too long can cause skin diseases such as acne.     2    .

·Sweating makes you happy.

When you’re hot, your heart beats faster to cool the body, releasing endorphins that cause feelings of joy.     3    . In a 2015 study, people who smelled “happy sweat” displayed tendencies associated with happiness. However, those exposed to fear-induced sweat showed characteristics of terror.

·    4

When sitting in a sauna (桑拿浴室), your body temperature rises, so your body works overtime to cool itself down by sweating. And you’ll be better off for it. A 20-year Finnish study found that people who sweated it out regularly in a sauna had a lower rate of sudden cardiac (心脏的) deaths.

·    5

If you sweat heavily during exercise, that’s usually a positive sign. Athletes tend to sweat sooner and more than inactive people. Their bodies have learned to cool down more efficiently during physical activity. A PLOSONE study supports this, showing that long-distance runners not only got sweatier sooner, but also activated more sweat glands, resulting in more sweat than their non-active counterparts.

A.Sweating supports your heart
B.Sweating a lot means that you’re fit
C.Sweat is the stuff that floods out when our body temperature rises
D.Your sweaty self can also make those around you feel happier too
E.Sweating contributes to a decrease in blood pressure to some extent
F.So, it’s essential to wash your face and body after sweating
G.It’s a natural bodily function that helps to regulate body temperature and prevent overheating

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了如何正确批评别人以及如何回应别人的批评。

8 . Nowadays, we live in a strict and judgmental world where people are quick to point out the faults of others and yet seem to ignore their own ones. Some misguided souls believe they have a moral duty to help you be a better person telling you what a failure you really are.

If you’re the one placing criticism upon others, please stop. Make a conscious decision, rather than focus on the negative aspect of a person’s performance or attitudes, and you can offer helpful suggestions. If I’m painting a living room and making a mess in doing so, I’d have any husband say to me, “This is a tough job. Can I offer a suggestion that might make it easier for you?” rather than have him point out what a careless painter I am.

If you’re on the receiving end of criticism, the “OK” response is a perfect solution. When someone comments negatively on a task you’re doing, the natural response is to defend and attack. However, this approach is rarely effective as it puts both parties on the defensive. It diffuses a potentially explosive situation. It’s important to keep calm and listen without feeling, to be an objective observer. There is much that one can learn from a negative review. You can ask yourself: Could I have done better, and been more thoughtful? Did I give 100% of myself to the task at hand? Is there any truth in what the other person says? If so, how can I improve?

In any event, one should remember the saying, “Stop judging and you will not be judged. Stop condemning (指责) and you will not be condemned.” One can learn to be “OK” with criticism and not allow it to negatively impact his or her relationship with the other party. Let it go and that will be “OK”.

1. What does the author want to show through the example in Paragraph 2?
A.Praise is more important than criticism.B.It’s hard to avoid making mistakes.
C.We ought to accept others’ criticism.D.Pointing out a fault needs a skill.
2. What is the proper response to criticism in the author’s opinion?
A.Paying no attention to it.B.Learning something from it.
C.Making excuses for your mistakes.D.Defending and attacking sometimes.
3. Which of the following best explains “diffuses” underlined in Paragraph 3?
A.spreadsB.improvesC.reducesD.conveys
4. Which would be the best title for this passage?
A.Is criticism really necessary?B.What can you learn from criticism?

10 . The problem nowadays is that there seems to be less of a desire to read than in the past. Teachers often complain that students don’t read. Most of them find it challenging to try to encourage students to read. Reading is a source of knowledge and language, but it should also be a source of entertainment.     1

When did we last give our students the chance to read something just for the pure pleasure of reading it? Reading is so often linked to some kinds of tasks.     2     Therefore, we need to show our students the benefits of reading for fun, and offer them the time to do so.

Witnessing students reading for fun

Recently, I was really surprised by two things that I saw. The first was in a bookshop. On a raining day, I wanted to shelter myself from the rain and browse some books, but it was hard to find a chair to sit, for all the chairs were occupied—by teenagers with their heads buried in books.     3     The front three rows were taken by youngsters, absorbed in reading and ignoring everything and everyone around them. In both cases, they read what they had chosen to read since it was of interest to them instead of school textbooks.

How to get students reading for pleasure

The dilemma we face is how to get our students to behave in this way in the classroom. First and foremost, remove their fear of always being formally questioned during or after reading. Secondly, give them opportunities to read simply for the pleasure of reading. What they like matters.     4     Even five minutes of reading for pleasure every day or every lesson will soon motivate them to read through their own choice. Of course, in reality, it’s hard to be achieved. But a start has to be made somewhere.

Remember, reading empowers!     5     Try and carry out these tips in the classroom and you could find some amazing results.

A.Time isn’t a problem.
B.Reading takes time and patience.
C.The second surprise was on the bus.
D.Students will benefit so much from reading
E.Reading in that way becomes of little enjoyment.
F.Here lies part of the answer to the problem of our students not reading.
G.Teachers have the mission to ensure this to take place in the classroom.
