文章大意:这是一篇新闻报道。文章报道了美国正在采取新的措施防止大学校园吸烟。

1 . New efforts are being made to prevent American college campuses from cigarette smoking. Twenty colleges in the United States recently received money to help protect their campuses from the harm of cigarettes.

Supporters say that every child deserves to grow up in a safe and healthy environment free from harmful second-hand cigarettes. And in November, smoking at college campuses may become illegal.

Before banning smoking at college campuses, the US has passed laws banning smoking at most workplaces. 27 American states ban smoking in all indoor workplaces.

Those supporting smoke-free at workplaces and college campuses give one major reason: the bad influence of smoking on health.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says smoking has a great influence on health. They think cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable deaths in the United States. Smoking is responsible for 480,000 deaths every year.

Supporters say the bad influence of second-hand smoke makes it a public health problem. Some also say that college campuses are a good place to ban smoking.

Gary Reedy, the CEO of the American Cancer Society, said it was important to stop college students from smoking, and he expected to successfully create a cigarette-free generation (世代).

The CDC found that 13 percent of adults between the ages of 18 and 24 smoke cigarettes. Reedy says that reducing the number of college students who smoke can help reduce the number of older adult smokers. He also says once a person starts smoking, it is hard to stop.

6 . Bob enjoys breakfasts of caviar, swims in his own saltwater pool and receives foot massages on the beach. A comfortable life, perhaps, but you could say he deserves it: Bob serves as an ambassador for conservation(保护大使). Bob,you see,is a flamingo(火烈鸟).

Odette Doest rescued Bob in 2016,after the bird crashed into a window in Curacao and hurt his left wing. While taking care of the bird at her wildlife sanctuary(庇护所),Doest discovered that Bob previously had been trained by people: He felt at ease with people, but he suffered from bumblefoot. The foot disease would have weakened his ability to catch food in the wild.

For those reasons, Doest decided to keep him as an educational animal at her sanctuary, alongside 90 other animals. When Doest began taking Bob on her foundation's weekly visits to schools on the island, the flamingo became famous instantly.

“Bob is like the hot item-everyone likes Bob,”Doest says. That's because most people have never seen such an elegant colorful bird up close.“Just don't try to take a Bobselfie. That's not what Bob is about,” Doest says firmly.“I have Bob for students to think about nature and the environment, and how a slight change in their habits can have a big effect on nature around us.”

That could mean choosing reusable cups instead of plastic bottles or skipping the balloons at a birthday party or picking up rubbish on the beach--all things Doest says children take to heart because they're so dazzled by Bob. Many of Doest's rescued birds were caught in fishing lines. In her talks, she stressed the environmental threat caused by fishing lines, along with plastic pollution.

1. What can we learn about Bob's life?
A.It is strange and meaningless.B.It is relaxing and meaningful.
C.It is difficult but exciting.D.It is hard but interesting.
2. What happened to Bob before he got hurt?
A.He was often beaten by people.B.His left wing was badly broken.
C.There was something wrong with his foot.D.He often got lost while looking for food in the wild.
3. Why does Doest like to bring Bob to schools?
A.To take photos with the students.B.To teach students how to raise flamingos.
C.To make herself well-known on the island.D.To educate students about environmental protection.
4. What does the underlined word “dazzled” in the last paragraph probably mean?

7 . Reading is an important part of learning English, but many students find it difficult.    1     .

●Read for the main ideas

Read the text for the first time, and don't stop. Read to understand the main ideas    2    . You' ll be surprised that you can usually understand the main idea of the story.

    3     .

Context(上下文)refers to words and situations that are around a word you don't understand. Look at the example sentence:

I went to the schlumping to buy some chitla for dinner.

What's "schlumping"?-It must be a store because you bought something there. What's "chitla"?-It must be food because you are going to eat it for dinner.

●Use your own language

One of the best tips on improving reading is to think about how you read in your own language. Start by thinking about how you read different documents. How do you read the newspaper?    4    ?How do you read train schedules? And so on. Taking time to think about this will help give you clues(线索)on how to read in English-even if you don't understand every single word.    5     .

●Understand different reading skills

Here is a quick overview of the four types of reading skills used in every language:

Skimming-used to understand the main idea

8 . There’s no denying that learning a foreign language is difficult, and when it comes to speaking the language, it can be extremely tough. I remember walking into my first-ever Spanish class at university only to discover that half of my classmates were already fluent in multiple languages. It’s safe to say I felt out of my depth!

At first the thought of speaking Spanish terrified me; not only were my vocabulary and grammar very limited, but I had never spoken another language before. However, I was determined to overcome my fear, and by adopting a few simple methods I have been able to build my confidence and make progress. In fact, it was not as terrible as I thought. Here, I think I will share a few tips with you.

Firstly, it is OK to make mistakes for language learners and that you should accept them. This sounds obvious, but when it comes to language learning we often aim for perfection and feel as though we are not ready to speak until we have "enough" words or grammatical knowledge. The truth is you will never feel ready, and instead it is important to use the knowledge to communicate what you can.

This leads on to my next tip: don’t compare yourself to others. This can be a hard one, especially if you are in a large language class. It is important to remember that we all learn at different speeds and through different styles of learning. Something that really helped me progress was finding a patient language exchange partner. Finding someone whose level of English was similar to my level of Spanish to practice with made me feel much more confident.

Lastly, celebrate the small success and remember how far you have come! Instead of focusing on how far you have to go, focus on the progress you have already made and be proud of your achievements!

1. What does the underlined part suggest in the passage?
A.The author took great pride in his classmates.
B.The author wanted to leave university immediately.
C.The author failed to join in his classmates’ conversation.
D.The author was unable to speak many languages.
2. What is the common barrier for language learners?
A.They fail to have a good command of grammar.
B.They have a lack of courage to speak the language
C.They can’t use the language in right situations.
D.They can’t help comparing themselves to others.
3. What’s the best way to learn Spanish in the author’s opinion?
A.Find a partner whose Spanish is excellent.
B.Set long-term goals to improve enthusiasm.
C.Learn from an example and pick out weak points.
D.Choose a language exchange partner at the same level.
4. What does the author want to tell in the passage?
A.Mastering Spanish is a chance in a million.
B.Learning new languages is not so hard.
C.Confidence is the key to speaking a language.
D.Don’t ignore what you have achieved in learning.

In the city, there is also a pizza museum and an academy in which 120 students each year can train to become pizzaiuoli themselves.     5     .
