Rows of small cottages with    1    (beauty) courtyards come into sight when one sets foot on Xiaopan village, Pan’an county of Zhejiang province. They were developed on local villagers’empty houses and are now used as shared homestays(家庭住宿)    2    (develop) tourism in the village.

Tourists can pick fresh vegetables in    3    communal (公共的) garden, while meals    4    (serve) from a communal kitchen. The fresh air and unique environment have drawn many tourists to Pan’an for leisure.

Since many    5    (villager) have vacant rural houses, local authorities came up    6    the idea of shared homestays to help improve tourist experiences    7    increase farmer income.

To date, 32 rural households have joined the shared homestay program,    8    offers more than 130 rooms. In addition, the village infrastructure (基础设施)    9    (improve) over the years, and parks and cultural plazas (露天广场) have been built.

A Chinese food and culture festival won New Yorkers’ hearts and     1     (stomach) on June 24 with its debut (首次亮相) on a section of street at Washington Square Park in Lower Manhattan. The festival showed authentic Chinese food     2     soup dumplings, dandan noodles, kebabs, pastries, flower cakes, Jianbing, sugar paintings, stinky tofu and others from around 35 vendors (摊贩).

Foodies (美食家)     3     (wait) in long lines at some popular stands and the waiting time for the Jianbing event was over two hours. More than 30,000 people joined in     4     free event from 10 am to 6 pm, on June 24. Food is the best starting point for people     5     (understand) and appreciate Chinese culture.

Vendors from Qingmu Dessert Lab offered Chinese pastries and wore     6     (tradition) Chinese clothing known as hanfu. A set of four pastries was made to represent the four seasons with ingredients (原料)     7     (collect) throughout the year. Jianbing,     8     is a popular street food in North China, drew many     9     (people) interest as its vendor Gem Bing Shop is nearby.

The festival is expected to     10     (hold) at other cities in the US next year.

My family lives by the Pacific Ocean, and my son, Ryan, has always loved marine animals. When he was three, Ryan came to the recycling center with me. He had fun     1     (feed) cans and bottles into the machine, especially once he realized that the more we recycled, the     2     (little) they would end up as litter on the beach. When I let him keep the $3 we got back for the returns, he was even more     3     (excite).

The next day, Ryan announced he was starting a recycling business: Ryan’s Recycling. He and my wife delivered trash bags to each of     4     houses on our street and asked our neighbors to save their cans and bottles     5    him.
