It’s never too late to mend

Once upon a time, there was a man who kept several sheep. One morning, he found one of his sheep was missing. After checking the pen carefully, he discovered a hole in the wall of the pen. It turned out that a wolf had broken into the pen and stolen his sheep.

His neighbor advised, “You should fix the pen and cover the hole right away.” But he rejected, “The sheep has already lost. It’s no use fixing it now.” However, the next morning, he found another sheep missing. The wolf stole the sheep through the hole again!

He regretted not taking the neighbor’s advice and began to cover the hole immediately. From then on, no more sheep was stolen.

Good morning, everyone. I’m Li Hua

The Office for National Youth Campus Football said that China already had 13, 381“special football schools” in 2016, and that 69 counties were piloting programs for football in schools.

Aimed at training young players and developing their talent, the government's latest plan is to advance China's ability to compete globally. The office predicts the number of football schools will have increased to 50, 000 by 2025.

Wang Dengfeng, director of the Physical Education, Health and Art Department under the Ministry of Education and Vice Chairman of the China Football Association, was quoted as saying that football experts are designing curriculum for more than 360 training programs in primary and secondary schools.

Xinhua reported that the MOE and five other central government departments were putting together a task force to ensure that football advances quickly in the country's schools.

President Xi Jinping is also a well-known football fan, who has repeatedly voiced his support for the sport's development in China.

3 . 请阅读下面短文,然后按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章。

Chinese government released an artificial intelligence development plan in 2017, calling on primary and middle schools to promote coding (编程) education, preparing kids for the future artificial intelligence (AI) development.

In response to the policy, coding and programming education have exploded amongst Chinese young students creating a large-scale market worth 3 to 4 billion yuan, according to a report released by iReserach in 2018.

In contrast to the upward developing trend, Xia Lixin, vice president of Central China Normal University cautions that the industry is facing many problems, including how to evaluate trainers, assess teaching effects and develop effective courses. Programming teachers for children requires not only professional proficiency but also basic teaching skills, Xia noted. In addition, it’s better to guide students hand in hand rather than via video.

At an after-school training center.

Son: I don’t want to sign up for any more classes. I am already juggling piano, calligraphy and English lessons.

Mother: Piano lessons are out. Coding is the new trend now. It helps with enrollment (录取). A lot of schools value such skills.

Son: But I don’t know a thing about coding. What if I’m not interested?

Mother: A lot of your peers are taking programming lessons. I bet you will develop an interest. Just give it a try.

Son: F-i-n-e.

4 . 阅读下面短文,按要求完成相关内容。

I stepped on a wallet in the street, picked it up and looked inside to find some clues(线索) so I could call the owner. But the wallet contained only three dollars and an old letter.

The envelope was worn and I could read only the return address on it. The letter in it was written almost 60 years ago, with a little flower in the left-hand corner. It was to a young man named Michael, saying that the writer could not see him anymore because her mother forbade(禁止) it. Even so, she wrote that she would always love him.

It was a beautiful letter signed by Hannah, but there was no way except for the name Michael, to identify (识别) the owner. After searching for the return address on the envelope, I finally found that Hannah was now in a nursing home.

I drove over to the nursing home. A nurse and a guard greeted me at the door. The nurse took me to the third floor, and introduced me to Hannah in the day room. She was a sweet, silver-haired old lady with a warm smile. I told her about finding the wallet and showed her the letter. The second she saw the letter with that little flower, she took a deep breath and said, “Young man, this letter was the last contact I ever had with Michael Goldstein.” She looked away for a moment deep in thought and then said softly, “I love him very much. But I was only 16 and my mother felt I was too young. Oh, he was so handsome. He looked like Sean Connery, the actor. If you should find him, tell him I think of him often. And,” she hesitated for a moment, almost biting her lip, “tell him I still love him.”

I thanked Hannah, said goodbye, and to the first floor. As I stood by the door, the guard there asked if I had any information from Hannah. “Not much but a last name. I think I’ll let it go for a while.” I said. I took out the wallet before the guard, which was a simple brown leather case. The instant he saw it, the guard yelled out, “I’ve seen it before! It might belong to Michael Goldstein, who lives at a room on the eighth floor.”

5 . 认真阅读下面的图表与文字,并按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章。

Significant numbers of high school students are receiving additional assistance from tutors. That requires a measure of time, commitment and sometimes a lot of money.

Tutors may be good for improving test scores, but they may harm a lot if students become overly dependent on tutors. Tutors’ role should be one of assessment, monitoring and assistance, not to take over and perfect. Tutors may be used to “bridge the gap”, but the responsibility stays on the student to take an active role in mastering the content and skills required for success.

I know kids who refuse to open their textbooks before the tutor gets in the house. Now I want to ask you a question: are you improving your study skills and developing learning intelligence with the “help” of your tutors?

8 . 请阅读下面短文,并按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章。

Much is unknown about how Covid-19, a new coronavirus, spreads. Current knowledge is largely based on what is known about similar coronaviruses. Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that are common in many different species of animals, including camels, cattle, cats, and bats. Rarely, animal coronaviruses can infect people and then spread between people such as with MERS, SARS, and now with Covid-19.

Most often, spread from person-to-person happens among close contacts (about 6 feet). Person-to-person spread is thought to occur mainly via respiratory droplets (呼吸飞沫) produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes, similar to how influenza and other respiratory pathogens (病原体) spread. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs. It's currently unclear if a person can get Covid-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes.

It's important to note that how easily a virus spreads person-to-person can vary. Some viruses are highly contagious (传染性) (like measles), while other viruses are less so. There is much more to learn about the transmissibility severity, and other features associated with Covid-19.

9 . 请阅读下面文字,并按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章。

The film Better Days is bringing attention to school bullying (欺凌). It's a topic that few Chinese movies have talked about before.

The movie is adapted from the Web novel Young and Beautiful. It tells the story of a high school student Chen Nian, who is bullied on campus and later gets caught up in a murder case. The movie, starring Zhou Dongyu and Jackson Yee, was a hit, bringing new attention to real-life bullying.

Since last year, China has approved the detention(拘留) of 3,407 students for bullying and charged 5750, according to the data provided by the Supreme People's Procuratorate (最高人民检察院) in May.

However, it is not easy to solve this problem. As Chinese sociologist Li Yinbe wrote on Sina Weibo, the movie shows how complex social situations can be for teenagers. Schools, teachers, parents, police and the government must work together to end bullying.

10 . 请阅读下面文字,并按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章。

The boom of live-streaming video and e-commerce platforms in China has attracted many social influencers, or Internet celebrities (名人), to advertise certain brands and products. The number of influencers and their fans is increasing. In 2018, sales based on live-streaming marketing amounted to more than 100 billion yuan ($14.3 billion), up by almost 400 percent year on year. Influencer marketing is making itself a force that can't be ignored.

However, a growing number of cases of influencers making fools of themselves while advertising products are shedding light on a pressing issue. While earning huge profits, some influencers are turning a blind eye to the quality of the products they are pitching For example, an online celebrity, who once sold 15,000 lipsticks within five minutes and was dubbed ''the king of lipsticks'', met his Waterloo in a recent live stream when promoting a non-stick pan. The audience could see that the fried egg was firmly sticking to the pan. This and other incidents of Internet celebrity marketing have sparked heated discussions online and in many media outlets.

Some people believe that in the era of the Internet celebrity and fan economy, influencer marketing is actually not to blame, but there must be a bottom line for what can and cannot be done. Some others view this incident and the sensation it has caused as an opportunity for this business to be standardized.
