About 7 years ago, at the age of 16, I was doing an unpaid job at an aquarium (水族馆). It was amazing because I loved the ocean and still do. I wanted to be a sea scientist, so it was extra special for me.
The other teens working there were nice; we were all there because we wanted to be. I don’t remember having any problems with coworkers at that time and was just enjoying getting to talk about my favorite things for part of the day.
Eventually “Shark Week” rolled around. I was excited because I love sharks. I think they’re wonderful creatures and swimming with sharks is still on my wish list. Obviously, everyone else wanted to work the shark week too as the schedule filled up fast.
I had one shift (轮班) during the shark week. I was dropped off at the aquarium in the morning, ready to talk ha ppily about sharks for the next few hours. I went to my station with a coworker and then I started feeling sick.
I started trembling (颤抖)a bit. I felt warm, then my stomach started shaking and I could not see things clearly. Obviously, my face was very pale and my coworker noticed I was about to fall down. She was able to walk me to one of the worker-only doors before having to go back to her station. I made my way slowly to the office and explained the situation—I needed to go home.
I wanted to cry. That was my only shift during the shark week and I had to miss it. And on top of that, I had to take the bus home. Normally I didn’t mind taking the bus home, but my bus stop was up a very steep (陡峭的) city hill. It’s quite a climb even if you aren’t sick. But I still struggled to do it. But by the time I reached the cupcake shop halfway up the hill, I couldn’t climb any further.

Suddenly, we heard loud explosions. Looking outside and up into the hills, we saw sparks (火花) flying from electrical transformers (变压器). One area after another went dark up in those hills. Then there was the loudest explosion of them all and our house went dark too. I tried to find every candle we had and lit them. The candles made everything look lovely. But we had problems. We had fifteen people standing around and we still had to cook dinner. How would we do that without electricity? The barbecue! Why not cook on the barbecue? We men went outside, some holding flashlights and others cooking. We did a wonderful job. The women stayed inside and got the salads ready. Everything was delicious. There were still a few hours to go before the beginning of the new year, so we all sat around the dining room table and sang up until a few minutes before midnight. We couldn’t watch the ball drop in Times Square on television but that wouldn’t stop us from celebrating. I stood on a chair and, with the help of someone’s watch to tell us the time, we all counted down and I dropped a tennis ball! We all screamed Happy New Year. We didn’t need electricity for that!
Nowadays, we still get together with the same group to celebrate the New Year and we still talk about that special night. I don’t think we have ever laughed so much as we did on that New Year’s Eve.

Researchers in the Netherlands report that children who get more exercise, whether at school or at other places, tend to have higher scores on standardized tests. In a review of 14 studies that looked at physical activity and academic performance investigators found that the more children moved? the better their grades were in school, particularly in the basic subjects of math, English and reading.
The data will certainly fuel the ongoing debate over whether physical education classes for senior three students should be reduced or even cancelled. The arguments against physical education have included concerns that gym time may be taking away study time. With standardized test scores in the US dropping in recent years, some administrators believe students need to spend more time in the classroom instead of on the playground. But as these findings show, exercise and academics may not be consequently exclusive. On August 25, 2019, a series of graded English books, “Tales of China”, were published in Shanghai the main theme of which is Chinese culture.
The series contain 16 books as well as 100 audio frequencies. There are 75 stories about Chinese festivals, idioms, folk legends and fairy tales in the series, including 240 beautiful illustrations. Traditional Chinese medicine, practiced for thousands of years, is having trouble maintaining traction in many parts of the country, said the president of a TCM hospital in Henan province.
“I have visited many counties across the country and found many of them do not have a single TCM hospital," said Pang Guoming of Kaifeng Hospital of TCM in Kaifeng. "In some counties, TCM hospitals use the old buildings of other hospitals, which have moved to bigger and new buildings."
"TCM is a unique health resource for China, and more effort should be made to promote it so it plays a bigger part in universal healthcare."
The development of TCM is expected to accelerate, with a guideline recently approved by the top leadership aimed at promoting innovation and the passing on of TCM knowledge.
Equal importance should be given to the development of TCM and Western medicine to promote their complementary （互补的）nature, said the guideline. More efforts should be made to improve the TCM service system, promote high-quality development of the TCM industry and boost TCM talent building, it said.
A widely known example is Tu Youyou, who won the 2015 Nobel Prize for the discovery of the artemisinin. Tu and her Chinese colleagues gained the insight that led to their discovery while reading a TCM prescription book that was more than 1,600 years old.

Online English-language courses for children saw an explosive growth in 2018, according to a report released by data-monitoring firm Trustdata on Tuesday.
The report on China’s online English education market for children shows that the market had more than 15 million users in 2018, up 168.3 percent year-on-year. And the market size was 21.3 billion yuan, an increase of 104 percent year-on-year, with one-on-one teaching taking up more than half of the market size. It’s expected that the market size will exceed 50 billion yuan ($7.3billion) in 2019.
The market pattern of one-on-one teaching has been gradually formed and the top brands have secured the lion’s share of the market, according to the report.
Insiders say as Chinese parents increase their spending on education, online education gets more recognition and China’s internationalization progresses, the number of online course users will keep growing.
