There are a few tips that can make road cycling fun and safe for people of all experience levels. In the United States, riders should usually ride on the right hand side of the road, while they may ride on the left side of the road in other countries. Besides, if the traffic is heavy, cyclists may be required to let other cars pass first in some areas. If bikeways are available (可用的), use the bikeways and know how to do safely. Generally, all road cyelists are required to follow all traffic signs and rules, even if other cars are not present.

Before your cycling, make sure the bike helmet (头盔) fits according to the instructions. If the helmet is too large or too small, it can’t protect the cyclist’s head well. Protective eyewear (护目镜)is also a good idea and must fit so it doesn’t fall off while speeding downhill or cycling uphill. If there are windy conditions, protective eyewear can help prevent dirt (灰尘) from causing the discomfort of eyes which can be a danger to a rider.

In fact, it is also important for riders to learn how to brake (刹车). This is usually done by quickly shaking the front brake. A good tip is to practice using the front brake before heading out on the road. Besides, it is important to learn how to ride in a bike group. It is often taught in a professional training team.

Finally, do not forget to plan and prepare for the bike route. For example, consider if road repairing is present on a given route. Besides,it may be more enjoyable to ride during times and on roads that do not have a heavy traffic. Meanwhile, consider whether a dog may be present;an angry dog may try to knock a cyclist over, and it may be best to find another route.

Fifteen years ago, I took a summer vacation in Lecce in southern Italy. After climbing up a hill for a panoramic(全景的)view of the blue sea, white buildings and green olive trees, I paused to catch my breath and then positioned myself to take the best photo of this panorama.

Unfortunately, just as I took out my camera, a woman approached from behind, and planted herself right in front of my view. Like me, this woman was here to stop, sigh and appreciate the view.

Patient as I was, after about 15 minutes, I grew frustrated. Was it too much to ask her to move so I could take just one picture of the landscape? Sure, I could have asked her, but something prevented me from doing so. She seemed so content in her observation. I didn’t want to mess with that.

Another 15 minutes passed. The woman was still there. I decided to take the photo anyway. And now when I look at it, I think her presence in the photo is what makes the image interesting. The landscape, beautiful on its own, somehow comes to life and breathes because this woman is engaging with it.

This photo, with the unique beauty that unfolded before me and that woman who ”ruined" it, now hangs on a wall in my bedroom.

Perhaps we all live in each other’s spaces. Perhaps this is what photos are for: to remind us that we all appreciate beauty, that we all share a common desire for pleasure, for connection, for something that is greater than us.

3 . 阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Among all the fast growing science and technology, the research of human genes,or biological engineering as people call it, is drawing more and more attention now. Discussions about it are increasingly heated around the world.

The greatest thing that gene technology can do is to cure serious diseases that doctors at present can almost do nothing with, such as cancer and heart disease. Every year, millions of people are murdered by these two killers.   up to date, doctors have not found an effective way to cure them. But if the gene technology is applied, not only these two diseases can be cured completely, bringing happiness and more living days to the patients, but also the great amount of money people spend on curing their diseases can be saved. Therefore, it benefits the economy as well.In addition, human life span(寿命) can be prolonged.

Some families have genetic diseases. This means their children will for sure have the family disease, which is a great trouble for these families.Gene technology can help people give birth to more healthy and clever children. In the past, doctors could do nothing about genetic diseases. But gene technology can solve this problem perfectly.Scientists just need to find the wrong gene and correct it,and a healthy child will be born.

Some people are worrying that the gene research can be used to create human beings in large quantities. In the past few years, scientists have succeeded in cloning animals such as mice, sheep, and dogs. Therefore, these people predict that human babies would soon be cloned and that it would be beyond control, leading to some disastrous consequences. But many believe that cloned babies will not come out in large quantities, for most couples in the world can have babies in a very normal way and they also believe the governments will control gene technology and make laws to make sure the gene technology will help better our lives instead of harming us.

Second-hand fashion stages a comeback

Few followers of fashion will forget the moment when a super model arrived at a New York fashion week dinner, wearing a 1950s dress. The next day, a hunt for something similar began. That was 2003. Fast forward to the 2020s and second-hand fashion is renewing a new round of craze, and this time, arguably, it’s back for good.

When super models and designers were buying things at second-hand markets and matching them with expensive pieces, the act was more related to the old ideal of what fashion was — very trend-based and very season-based. Today, ordinary people always want to have new looks but they’re becoming more aware of the impact of their choices on the environment, and the best thing we can do in this climate crisis is to limit the resources we take out of the planet. Second-hand fashion speaks to what’s happening right now. And the world is speaking back. It’s estimated that the total resale clothes market is expected to rise in value from $96 billion in 2021 to $141 billion by 2023. More than ‘back for good’, second-hand fashion looks set to become the new norm.

The increased crafts of repair and upcycling offer another contemporary dimension to the trend. There’s a rise in young people looking at things that already exist, not only to take inspiration from, but also to use as material for next-stage creation. Current repair and upcycling skills make their wish a reality.

Even social media platforms are on board. “Once you start finding heat at the second-hand fashion shop, it quickly turns into an ever-growing addiction. Each piece has history behind it,” said an online celebrity with 1.7 million followers. He, along with other celebrities posting visits to shops of this kind, has pushed up sales. Their power in the field can’t be neglected.

Science at School and at Work

Concern has been expressed about a relative lack of interest in science as a school subject or future career. This report focuses on the views of students and puts forward suggestions for improving the image of science.

The vast majority of students who choose science subjects feel they have made the right decision. They enjoy conducting experiments in the well-equipped laboratories and appreciate the fact that compared with those in arts subjects, the teaching staff are more highly qualified. In consequence, science students believe they are learning in a more stimulating environment.

Unfortunately, however, some students think twice before choosing sciences, because of their reputation as comparatively difficult subjects that involve memorizing facts and figures. Moreover, there is a widespread belief that high marks are harder to obtain in sciences.

In addition, science has a serious image problem. Many are discouraged by the so- called lack of charm of science as a profession, by film stereotypes of mad professors and computer geeks, and by the suspicion with which the media often treat scientific research, for instance concerning genetically modified food.

Students should be invited to participate in Science Fair projects, scientific work experience programmes and virtual Open Days at university science faculty so that a more positive impression of science can be created. They should also be made aware of the benefits of studying science, such as developing thinking skills, discovering how things work and — one day — finding real solutions to real problems.

Audrey Hepburn was an actress and fashion icon who was born in Belgium. Hepburn was a talented performer known for her beauty, elegance and grace. During her early 20s, she studied acting and worked as a model and dancer. She also began to get some small film roles.

Audrey gained immediate fame in the U.S. with her role in Roman Holiday in 1953. This film turned out to be a great success as she won an Oscar as Best Actress. This gained her enormous popularity. She continued to fascinate audience with roles in films like Breakfast at Tiffany’s, My Fair lady, War and Peace, and Always.

Becoming famous never changed Hepburn’s generous character. She felt a deep sense of responsibility to help those in need, especially children. From 1967, after 15 years in film, Audrey acted only occasionally. She spent more time with her family and also working with UNICEF. In 1988, Audrey was appointed a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF designed to provide emergency food and healthcare to children suffering the war. She travelled representing UNICEF, making over 50 dangerous missions into bleak destinations to raise world awareness of wars and droughts.

Her passion for service was enduring. Even as her life ended at 63 years of age, she remained a gracious woman. Her spirit of social responsibility lives on in her words, “Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, it’s at the end of your arm. As you get older, remember you have another hand: The first is to help yourself, the second is to help others.”

When you are learning English, listening, speaking and writing are important, but reading can also be very helpful. When you read, you can not only learn some new words, but also you can learn how to use these English words. When you read, it gives you a good example for writing.

Read something that you can (more or less) understand. If you need to stop every three words to use a dictionary, it is not interesting. Reading books with a reasonable number of new words is very important. If there are four or five new words on a page, write them in your notebook. But you don’t have to write them while you read. Instead, try to guess their meaning as you read, and mark them with a pen. Then come back when you have finished reading to look them up in a dictionary and write them in your own vocabulary book. Then try to remember them.

You should develop a good habit of reading. For example, read for a short time once a day. Fifteen minutes every day is better than two hours every Sunday. Fix (固定) a time to read and keep to it. You could read for fifteen minutes when you go to bed, or when you get up or at lunchtime.

There are a variety of books in the bookstore, so what kinds of books should you choose? Choose a book or a magazine about a subject that you like, because you are going to spend time and money reading it. So, choose an interesting book. You can also read newspapers. There are many English newspapers in China, for example, 21st Century Teens. It is easy enough for you to understand it. There is something interesting in it.

It is generally believed that scientific research should improve our quality of life. Meanwhile, there is almost universal agreement that the government should provide financial and political support for any research that is likely to result in immediate and significant benefits for the majority of people. However, when it comes to whether the government should support scientific research with no practical use, people’s ideas vary. I agree with the statement that the government should distribute enough funds to any scientific research that aims to improve the wellbeing of people, even if it is of no practical use in the short run.

Scientific research whose social benefits are immediate, predictable, and farreaching should continue to be a high priority. For example, biotechnology research has been proven to help cure and prevent diseases; advances in medical technology make it possible to offer safer treatments; information technology enables education to be more accessible; and communication technology promotes global peace by improving mutual understanding among people and their participation in the democratic process.

However, this is not to say that research whose benefits are less immediate or clear should be given a lower priority. It is difficult to predict what research will finally lead to the greatest contributions to society. Unwillingness to finance less practical scientific research could have a harmful effect on the efforts to explore new knowledge. This is particularly true of the computer science. For example, before the first computer was invented, public opinions went against it, as most people saw nothing practical in computer research. However, computers transformed the way human society developed and proved to be of great use in the long run, especially in terms of scientific development in fields such as the military, medicine, aviation, and education.

Therefore, never should we think that scientific research whose benefits are unknown is not worth undertaking since the purpose of any research should be to discover the truth, whatever it might be.

Advertising Objectives

When developing a successful advertising campaign, marketers must first set an advertising objective. The objective is the purpose for the advertising campaign. There are four main advertising objectives—to inform, to persuade, to compare, or to remind.

Companies use informative advertising to give information about a new type of product. In this case, the purpose is to increase demand for the new product. DVD players are a good example. The first sellers of these products had to tell consumers about the quality and convenience of the new product. Big sales soon followed.

However, informative advertising doesn’t work so well when there are many companies with the same kind of product. This is because consumers already know the normal features of the product. Instead, they need to see how one company’s version is better than all the others. This kind of advertising is called persuasive advertising. For instance, when DVD players became common, Sony began trying to persuade customers that its brand has the best quality for their money to keep sales high.

Comparative advertising also tries to persuade. Thus it is really a kind of persuasive advertising. In this, a company compares its brand with one or more other brands. Comparative advertising has been used for products from soft drinks to car rentals and credit cards. An example is Avis, a car rental company, which compared itself with its bigger rival Hertz by claiming, “We’re number two, so we try harder?”

A different kind of advertising is reminder advertising, which is important for products later in their life. Unlike the other types, its objective is to help to keep strong relationships with customers and to keep them thinking about the product. This is why expensive Coca-Cola television ads mainly build and maintain the Coca-Cola brand relationship, rather than trying to inform or persuade people to buy the drink straight away.

Want to join the online fitness program?

Online training is one of the fastest growing section of the fitness industry. A 2015 study found that more than half of all smartphone users had downloaded a fitness or health app. If you’re considering joining the online fitness community, consider these benefits and drawbacks.

There are many reasons that online training may work for you. As long as you have access to pre-downloaded videos or a WiFi connection for streaming videos, you can work out wherever you are.

Besides, compared with similar offline programs, most online fitness programs range in cost between $10 and $20 per month. This is due in part to the wider audience and the greater opportunity to sell programs to more people.

All this growth is incredibly positive — it provides health and fitness resources to the general consumer wherever they happen to be, without requiring access to a gym or fitness studio. But it’s not without problems.

The first thing to think about when considering an online fitness program is “know yourself.” If you struggle with self-motivation, you don’t like exercising at home, and you prefer a social workout environment, online fitness may not be for you. Not to mention the fact that very few online fitness programs enable the instructor to see you, check your form, and offer modifications or corrections based on your performance. This means you might perform exercises incorrectly, or even unsafely, without knowing it, which is particularly concerning for beginners and those recovering from injuries, as they’re more likely to perform exercises incorrectly.

Therefore, like any training format, there are pros and cons to consider when deciding if it is right for you. Take time and make the most suitable decision to reap more benefits.
