1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Jennifer, a middle school student, was in Mr Green’s class. After only a month at school, she began to be home on a regular basis asking for plenty of crayons, paper, etc. At first, her mother, Sophia, just dutifully provided whatever she needed, never questioning her.

After ongoing requests for the items for several weeks, Sophia became concerned and asked her, “Jennifer, what are you doing with your stationery (文具)?” However, Jennifer would always respond with an answer that satisfied Sophia.

One day, after supplying the same things to Jennifer, Sophia seriously asked her once again, “Jennifer! What is exactly going on with your stationery?” Knowing her excuses would no longer work, Jennifer bent her head and kept silence. With her mind filled with confusion, Sophia lifted her daughter’s chin and looked into her eyes, asking, “What is wrong? Are you making money by reselling school supplies?” Sophia waited for what seemed like a long time for Jennifer to answer.

“Mom,” Jennifer said, “I’ve known a boy, called Jack, who is a student in the nearby school sponsored by a charity. He is an immigrant and has two brothers. He doesn’t have enough stationery to do his work. He only has two crayons to color with, and his art paper is messy. I have been putting the new stationery you bought me in his desk before the others came in, so he still doesn’t know I gave it to him. Our teacher, Mr Green, always told us to be an honest person. I knew I didn’t do it. Mom, don’t be angry. I didn’t mean to tell you a lie, but I didn’t want anyone to know it was me.”

Sophia stood there in disbelief. Jennifer had took on the role of an adult and tried to hide her good intentions. Sophia hugged Jennifer tightly, saying, “Baby, I will never get mad at you for wanting to help someone, but why didn’t you just come and tell me?” This time, Sophia did not have to wait for her quick answer, but decided to act.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was helping my mother in the kitchen when I heard a terrible noise struck from above. I rushed to the upper floor to check out. There was nothing but a wet footprint on the floor.

“What’s happening?” my mother asked.

“Nothing, just the sound of lightning.” I knew something strange had happened, but I ignored it as my mother was suffering a cardiac (心脏的) disease. “We’d better close the windows. Maybe rain will pour down,” I showed a relaxing expression but thought back about that footprint. It was so familiar, but I could not remember where I had seen it.

“David, can you help me take the cooking pot in the attic (阁楼)?” my mother requested. “Oh, please! I am afraid of the dark,” I answered.

My mother said that I was like my father. Oh, you want to know what happened to my father? He was an engineer. Last month, he went to the oil platform in the middle of the sea at Jerteh, Terengganu. He said he went there for only 4 days. But 2 weeks had passed, and he still didn’t come back. My mother called the management office in Jerteh but was told they hadn’t seen him since they last saw him on his way to the seashore from the oil platform.

Speaking of my father, my mother looked sad. “Today was our Anniversary Day, but he was missing.”

But back to the main point. I investigated the footprint in my room. And when I looked up, the window was opened. I walked towards it and looked out. Nothing. I closed the window and lay down on my bed. “Ouch! What is this?” I asked myself.

There was a small box on my bed. I wondered what was inside it. I opened the brown box. There was a necklace, made of pure gold. Why was there a gold necklace in my room?

Suddenly, my room became dark. My terrible fear towards the darkness was to the limit. I grabbed a flashlight and turned it on.

Last year, during the summer break, my friends and I decided to go for a walk in the forest. The forest had paths, and we decided that we would hike along the paths and meet at a central point to have a drink later. The whole team had several groups and we had planned on meeting with the rest of the team after three hours. I had a lighter,a partially charged phone, and a bottle of water. We continued on our way towards the deeper part of the forest until we were far from any recognizable trail. After two hours, we were in the deepest part of the forest, and we could not trace our other friends.

All of a sudden,a bear came rushing along our path, and we all run in different directions. After running for about five minutes,I stood alone in a bush. I had no clue about my surroundings as I had never been.there before.I shouted at my friends’ names loudly, but all was in vain:there was no reply, and the whole place was silent. I was confused and felt like crying as I realized I was alone with nothing to protect myself. With a lot of fear,I tried to trace the part where I had come from, but all was useless:l was lost.

As I walked along the path trying to locate my friends, I realized that I was tired, and nothing was looking familiar. I was out of food, water, and barely had any battery in my phone. I decided to walk through the bushes as the trees had grown so close together. I squeezed myself between the little trees. After some thirty minutes, it started raining heavily. Though I had heavy clothing,I was rained on until I was soaked up.I started freezing and praying to the God for protection and direction out of the forest.

When Dylan was just seven years old, he moved to the United States with his mother, Khadine, and his twin younger brothers. The family hoped that their new home would allow them to start over and find success. However, their dream didn’t work out exactly as they imagined it would.

Life as a single mother supporting three kids is incredibly difficult, but Khadine had a particularly difficult time after her twin sons had been diagnosed with serious heart conditions. As a result, the boys suffered from dangerous symptoms and required 24-hour care. As Khadine had to work three jobs to support her family financially, it became Dylan’s responsibility to look after his young brothers. To relieve Mom’s stress, Dylan also found a part-time job at a recreation center.

While Dylan never considered his family to be a burden to him, seeing his mother and brothers become vulnerable (脆弱的) made him determined to plan his future out correctly. He believed education was the only way out of their struggle, so he made a promise to his mother that he would be the first one in the family to go to college.

For that promise, Dylan made use of each and every minute to study while taking care of his brothers. He soon became an honor student at Henry High School and took several advanced classes to keep his grades up. The College of New Jersey was his top choice. He was determined to put that admission letter in his mother’s hands.

However, weeks before Dylan’s college entrance exam, both his family and his determination were tested again when Khadine fell ill and was unable to work for a while. Soon, the bills became unmanageable and the landlord evicted (驱逐) Dylan’s family after Khadine couldn’t pay the rent. The family had no choice but to live in the shelter. The place wasn’t an ideal place to study. It was often noisy and crowded, and the lights would go out at a certain time after 11 p.m.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

We have all heard the expression: “Remember to stop and smell the roses.” But, how often do we really take time out of our busy fast-paced lives to notice the world around us? I have reflected back on one situation many times since it happened and have learned several powerful lessons from it.

I’m as guilty as anyone of ignoring the world around in this manner, especially when I am driving on California’s overcrowded streets. A short time ago, however, I witnessed an event that showed me how being wrapped up in my own little world has kept me from being fully aware of the bigger world picture around me.

I was driving to a business appointment and, as usual, I was planning in my mind what I was going to say. I came to a very busy crossroads where the stoplight had just turned red. “All right,” I thought to myself, “I can beat the next light if I race ahead of the pack. ”My mind and car were in auto pilot, ready to go when suddenly my absent-minded state was broken by an unforgettable sight.

A young couple, both blind, was walking arm-in-arm across this busy crossroads with cars whizzing by in every direction. The woman was holding something tightly in her hands that sling to her chest, obviously carrying a child. Both of them had a white walking stick extended, searching for clues to direct them across the crossroads.

Initially I was moved. They were overcoming what I felt was one of the most feared handicaps — blindness. “Wouldn’t it be terrible to be blind?” I thought. Without realizing the danger they were in, they were walking right the path of oncoming cars. I was frightened for them because I didn’t know if the other drivers understood what was happening.

However, as I watched from the front line of traffic, I saw a miracle unfold before my eyes.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I had never noticed her. She was not the kind of girl who could draw attention. She was not tall and just plain. In class, she liked sitting at the back, reading or taking notes. It was once I asked her to read aloud the text that I looked at her with new eyes when I heard her standard American pronunciation. Later on, the National College English Speech Contest would be held. I thought it over and filled in her name with a smile. I red-penciled her draft of speech, corrected her pronunciation, and even adjusted her body language.

However, I was always kind of worried because she was too introvert(内向的)and too quiet. Could she seize this rare opportunity?

On the night of the contest, I told her to take it easy. Blushed(脸红的), she looked at me and said nothing.

My heart sank. It seemed that she did tense up. I pated her and let her go to draw lots(抽签). As a result, what she drew was No. 9 while No. 8 was recognized English master-hand(高手).

Sure enough, the English master-hand was fairly successful in the speech with his humor and highly personal style. The whole audience would make a warm applause almost every 30 seconds until she appeared on the stage, still talking over his speech with excitement.

My palms began to sweat. I sat there, with no courage to look at her. It was the first time that she went up the stage, so I couldn't blame her for any slips. But at that moment, I found I was so scared of her failure.

The strong spotlight made her so small and so insignificant that nobody seemed to notice she had been on the stage, I said to myself, no hope.

But the moment that shocked me occurred. I clearly heard a voice, a very loud voice, “Now, please focus on me.” She said this sentence three times in all, louder and louder.

Once a man, called George, decided to build a house of cards in his garden. Being a beginner, he started off. With just a few cards, he found a nice flat surface and began to form his structure. It was difficult at first, but later, he mastered it and stood proudly beside his creation. He went inside to tell his wife, but while he was fetching her ,wind arose and it blew down his house of cards before he could show it to her.

A tide of anger arose in the man. There was much cursing and gnashing of teeth. But after a while the anger turned into more determination. He decided to start again. But this time he would need to prevent the wind blowing down his house of cards.

“I know!” he thought to himself.“I will build a house of cards around the house of cards. That way it will be protected against the wind.

And so he began again. This time it was a much bigger job, but as he continued to practice, he got more and more expert in creating the structures. Eventually he finished. He took pride in himself once more as he went to fetch his wife from inside the house. But unluckily, once more wind arose. First it blew down the protective house of cards, and then it blew down the inner house of cards, until none was left standing.

“I cannot believe it!“ he shouted at the sky. “Why are you doing this to me?” He stamped his feet, kicked a tree trunk, then sat down at the base of the tree and began to think.“I know!” came the little internal voice once more.“I will build a house of cards around my house of cards around my house of cards. That way the wind won’t be able to reach my house of cards.

A brave dog fought off a coyote (丛林狼) twice her size to protect her 10-year-old owner after it attacked them. Owner Lily Kwan, 10, said she had just heard her neighbors in her Toronto, Canada community on Tuesday warning people of a coyote going after children in the area when the animal started biting at her heels while she was walking dog Macy.

In the video captured by a neighbor’s security camera, Lily can be seen running down the sidewalk with her six-year-old rescue dog while the coyote followed them so closely.

“I thought, ‘Am I next, what is going to happen to me?’” Lily told the local newspaper. “I was screaming for help but no one heard me,” said Lily. “I saw this coyote trying to attack my dog and I tried to ring people’s doorbells and knock on people’s doors. Luckily, this one neighbor let me in.”

But while Lucy made it to safety, Macy wouldn’t follow her inside. Instead the little dog turned around toward the coyote. After briefly screaming Macy’s name, Lily ran onto the neighbor’s second floor. Macy could be seen fighting with the coyote, before it caught her and bit her in its mouth and shook her violently. She cried in pain, but kept barking and bit the coyote back until it gave up and ran away finally.

“She’s a super brave dog,” Lily said “I love her so much, and I just thought this tiny dog could protect this huge human being, trying to fight off this huge coyote.”

Lily’s mother, Dorothy Kwan, said she was not surprised when hearing Macy’s action. “My dog would do anything for our family, so I’m actually not surprised that she did that,” Dorothy Kwan said.

Ella’s First Fashion Creation

Ella was wearing a new dress and she felt like a famous model, Even better, it was a dress she made! Her very first piece of fashion!

“What do you think?” she asked her family. They were all gathered at the kitchen table for breakfast. “It’s very pretty. I can’t believe you designed and sewed that all by yourself!” Mom said.“I’m so proud of you! How long did that take?”Dad asked. Ella pulled out her chair and sat down.“Two weeks! But I think I could make the next one faster. I had a few problems.

Ella smiled. She had so many problems making the dress, but right now it was all worth it. It was going to be a great day.

The kids at school weren’t quite as excited about her dress as she thought they would be, but she did get some nice comments from some of the girls, so she was happy about that. The day went by quickly, and before she knew it, she was outside for the last break of the day. What a perfect day, she thought to herself as she swung on the swings.

The school bell rang and the break was over. When the swing was close to stopping, Ella jumped off. When she landed, she heard a loud rip (撕裂). She moved her hand to the back of her dress. It was ripped all the way down the back! Her very first fashion creation fell apart! Ella was so embarrassed.

Ella spotted her teacher, Miss Miller, near the door. Ella took one hand from her dress and waved for Miss Miller to come to her. Miss Miller came up and looked at the back of Ella’s dress.“Oh no! And it is such a beautiful dress!” “I made it myself,” Ella said. “You must be very proud! You did a great job!” “Not really. Or it wouldn’t have ripped.” “Well, that happens sometimes. Even with clothes you buy in the store!”
