1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Henry Crawley was a cab driver who drove long circuits every day. His job kept him away from family for long hours. It was the topic of many quarrels he had gotten into with his wife, who understood why he was away so often but could not resist the urge to cry out for her husband’s physical absence.

To make up for not always being there for his daughter, Leslie, Henry was determined to make it to her 16th birthday party on time. On the day of her birthday, Henry conveyed as many passengers as he could as usual. When he finally finished the last order to a distant town outside the city, Henry rushed back to his city for the small party.

However, he got caught up in a heavy snowstorm that restricted mobility on his way back. Stubbornly, he decided he would press on anyway and continued driving even though he had to go at a snail’s (蜗牛的) pace.

It was 6: 00 pm and Leslie’s party started at 6: 30 pm. He complained about the weather as he fastened his eyes on the slippery road. As time passed, he got closer to the city. Suddenly, he spotted a person sitting beside the road. He stopped his car to check on it, and found it was an elderly woman who was unable to speak but almost freezing. Her bedroom clothes told him she must be from the town nearby he just drove past.

Henry decided to take the woman to her town, but he remembered that his wife would be upset with him if he missed his daughter’s birthday party. He called his wife to explain things. As he predicted, she said nothing, ending up the call. That made him uneasy and almost turn back to his car. But he knew that he could not leave the woman helpless. “I’d want someone to care for my wife or daughter if they ended up in such a tough situation,” he said to himself.

Passing Kindness On

Mrs. Brown was in the store with her little boy Jack, having just come from Urgent Care Center to get him some medicine for a virus. While Jack looked around in the store, she couldn’t wait to get him home to warm soup and a warm bed.

“Mommy, look!” Jack said when they got close to the register. He pointed at a row of toy cars for sale. “Can I have one? Please?”

“No, Jack. You have plenty of cars,” said Mrs. Brown. “Besides, it’s very close to Christmas. Who knows what Santa will bring you?” Jack accepted his mother’s decision, but it didn’t help his mood. Now he was tired and disappointed.

When they got up to the counter, the lady at the register handed Jack one of the toy cars. “The woman in front of you in line bought this for you,” she said. “I chose the yellow one, but you can have any one you want.”

Jack looked so happy because it was the very thing he wanted. Mrs. Brown looked around for the mysterious (神秘的) benefactor, but she was long gone. “That was very nice of that lady,” she said. “Maybe we can also give an anonymous (匿名的) gift to someone else today.”

“Yes, we should!” Jack agreed. The unexpected kindness made him feel better than any medicine could. Immediately he thought of the little girl who was badly ill in Urgent Care Center. “Mommy, why not give the girl we saw in Urgent Care Center something nice to comfort her?” he suggested.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Nancy took me by the hand and walked me into the house like I was a five-year-old child. Didn’t she know I was turning 15 years old? This was the third home Nancy was placing me in. I guessed she might feel a little sorry for me. The bright lights threatened to burn my skin as I walked towards a lady with curly hair and a smiling man. They called themselves Allie and Alex. After Nancy completed the foster (寄养的) process with them, Allie and Alex took me to their home. This time, there were no other foster children and no other biological children.

Over the next few weeks, Allie, Alex, and I fell into quite a nice routine. Allie would make pancakes for breakfast, or Alex would fry some eggs. They sang a lot, and even danced as they cooked. And they always seemed to be full of energy and happiness. They must have just bought the house because, on most weekends, we were painting a living room yellow or painting a coffee table brown.

But I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. When would they start threatening a loss of pancakes if I didn’t mow (修剪) the lawn? When would the eggs be replaced with unidentifiable food because they didn’t feel like cooking in the morning? However, it never happened. They kept cooking, singing, and dancing like a couple of happy fools. “Maybe this is where I belong,” I told myself.

It was a Saturday afternoon when Allie decided it was time to paint the fireplace white. First, we cleaned the dirty old fireplace, and then we pulled the burnt wood out. Suddenly, we noticed a tiny treasure box. We looked at each other in excitement. Allie actually said, “I wonder if a fairy has left it!” While judging her to be such a silly woman, I couldn’t help but laugh and felt a little closer to her. We looked at each other and wondered what would be inside the box. Would there be something valuable like a golden ring?

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头谓续写两段,使之构成一简完整的短文。

I loved being a teacher, but for years I had been eager to become a librarian. However, the timing was never right for me to go back to school. Finally, the time came and I received my media specialist degree. But my biggest difficulty was yet to come. I wanted to find a job as a media specialist in a nearby elementary school, and those positions were hard to get.

The new school year started, and I was teaching fourth grade again. As the months passed from August to December without any job opportunities, my optimism and faith began to fade. To stay positive, I listened repeatedly to several inspiring songs in the car on my commute to my son’s school and my job. Every morning, I thanked someone in my heart of hearts for my new job as a media specialist as if I already had it, my family. and the other blessings in my life.

In the beginning of January that school year, I saw a job posted online for a media specialist position, but the school was on the opposite side of town from where my son was attending school. My mind was filled with questions. How would I get my son to school if my job was on the other side of town and I had to go to work an hour earlier than his school started? Should I still apply? I hoped for guidance and good luck. I knew I had to have faith, so I applied for the job, but I didn’t hear anything for weeks.

I played my inspiring music so much that my son, who knew the words, would sing along. I continued to thank someone in my heart of hearts for my good luck and tried to stay positive. Yet, by the end of January, I started to doubt myself. As I drove my son to school, he seemed to know how I felt, but said nothing. Then one evening, I received a sign appearing on my mirror, which looked like a Chinese symbol.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My dad is a helpful police off and I respect him very much. In his spare time, he likes volunteering to give lectures on law to the children in our community.

I remember my father took a special care of a family made up of a struggling single father, Jack, and his three sons. The elder boys seemed kind and understanding while the youngest boy, Tom, was naughty and wild. When helping Jack in life and work, my father always taught his children to obey the law.

During one visit, my dad and Jack had a deep conversation. During their talk, Jack expressed his concern about the future of his youngest boy, and said, “As we know, Tom is a clever boy, but he is too competitive. He always behaves badly at school. For some reason, he fought with his classmate again yesterday. I don’t know how to deal with him.” Obviously, he felt powerless to guide Tom. So, he asked for my father’s advice and ideas. “Will you allow your boy to leave the city for a few days? I want to take him to spend the summer with my son in the suburbs(郊区) of our hometown.” My dad offered the only solution he could think of on the spot. However, Jack agreed and was grateful to my father.

My dad decided that it would be good for Tom to see another side of family life, which he had never been experiencing. Then he discussed the plan with me. I couldn’t agree more.

When the summer vacation came, we had a new member, Tom, in our family. Although we seemed very unfamiliar to him, he had no trouble adapting to the new home environment. Amazingly, we found that he was an honest and open boy and got along well with the whole family. He seemed to like playing in the backyard and particularly enjoyed swimming in the pool. Wherever my father went, he took both of us with him. It wasn’t long before Tom and I became good friends. I felt so lucky to have him with me, and I even shared everything interesting with him.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Kevin was a “slow” boy. He didn’t learn his ABCs as fast as other kids. He never came in first in the schoolyard races. However, Kevin could get along well with other people. And his enthusiasm for life was quite contagious (有感染力的). So, when he discovered that his teacher, Randy Moss, was putting together a basketball team, his mother could only answer, “Yes, you may join.”

Basketball became the center of Kevin’s life. He liked to stand in a certain spot near the free-throw line and shoot baskets. Patiently, he stood there throwing ball after ball.

The day before their first game, Randy gave each player a bright red jersey (运动衫). Kevin had stars in his eyes when he saw his number 12. He quickly put it on and almost never took it off again. Kevin and his whole team truly loved basketball. But just loving the game doesn’t help you win. More balls fell out of the basket than into it, and the boys lost every game that season, except one—the night it snowed. and the other team couldn’t make it to the game.

At the end of the season, they had the misfortune to play against the first-place team-the undefeated first-place team. The game went pretty much as expected, and near the middle of the fourth quarter Kevin’s team stood nearly 30 points behind.

At that point, one of Kevin’s teammates called a time-out. As he came to the side, Randy couldn’t imagine why the time-out had been called. “Mr. Moss, this is our last game and I know that Kevin has played in every game, but he’s never made a basket. I think we should let Kevin make a basket,” said the boy.

With the game completely out of reach, the idea seemed reasonable, so the plan was made. Every time Kevin’s team had the ball, Kevin was to stand in his special spot near the free-throw line and they would give him the ball.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

“Mom! I’m home!” John happily said and ran into the kitchen. His mom was making cookies near the window. Outside, a robin was singing. Pop-Pop, John’s grandpa, who lived with them after John’s grandma died, came shuffling through the door. Pop-Pop said, “When the robin sings, spring is here.” John’s mom added, “Tomorrow, John, let’s do the annual spring cleaning.”

The next day John and his mom cleaned the house. When looking at Pop-pop’s chair, John’s mom said, “That old chair has to go. We’ll buy Pop-Pop a new one. Let’s take it to the roadside. Tomorrow the garbage truck will pick it up.” John agreed because the chair was worn. As they attempted to move the chair, Pop-Pop came. He tried to stop John and his mom, saying he didn’t need a new one. Finally, John’s mom let go of the chair and said, “We’ll discuss it tonight when Matt gets home.” Matt, John’s dad, was still at work.

With a sigh of relief, the old man sank into his chair. “Pop-Pop, why not get rid of this old chair?” John asked when his mother left the room. “You all don’t understand, John,” Pop-Pop whispered. “I sat in this chair, with your grandma right here, when I asked her to marry me. It was so long ago. But when I sit there, I feel she’s near. And the night your father was born, I sat in this chair, too. I was so happy when they placed the tiny baby into my arms.” As Pop-Pop continued telling his connection with the chair, John understood this chair was more like a friend to him.

That night, however, when John and Pop-Pop were asleep, John’s parents carried the chair to the roadside. It was a starless night. Spring had moved away temporarily, and snow fell silently and covered Pop-Pop’s chair. The next morning, when John came downstairs, he saw Pop-Pop standing by the window and looking outside. John followed his sad look. Snow-covered, the chair stood out on the street.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I had a problem. Talent Night was coming up, but I had no talents.

Kate can make anything using origami (折纸). Tommy creates breath-taking beats on overturned plastic buckets. Olivia trains her petty dog to do tricks. And those are just my friends. My grade also boasts four dancers, a gymnast, two bakers, a yoga expert, six singers, and five artists, among others.

Every day my teacher asked if I’d decided what to do. And every day I reminded her that I had no talents.

“Nonsense, Benjamin,” she said. “You’ll think of something.”

“I’ll just have to be sick the day of the show,” I announced to my friends one afternoon. “If you get a cold, be sure to cough on me.”

“You must have a talent,” said Kate. “Let’s make a list. What are you good at?”

“Eating,” I answered. “Watching TV.”

Kate rolled her eyes. “Benjamin, be serious.”

“Tormenting (捉弄) my little brother.”

“Are you kidding me?” Kate looked at our friends. “Come on, guys. What are Benjamin’s talents?”

“He’s good with dogs,” said Olivia. “My dog adores him.”

“Oh, great,” I said. “I can sit on the stage while he licks my face. Benjamin Belinski, Human Dog Toy.”

“Benjamin’s funny and humorous,” said Tommy. He turned to me. “You could do a comedy routine.”

“Yeah. Every joke could be about how I have no talents,” I said.

“Benjamin,” said Kate, “maybe you don’t know how to juggle (变戏法), but your birthday parties are the best.”

“Yeah,” agreed Olivia, “and you always get us together to do stuff. Like having game nights or riding bikes after school—or when we held that yard sale. The week you had the flu we didn’t do anything fun.”

“You’re like the glue that holds us together,” added Tommy.

“Oh, great,” I said. “Benjamin Belinski, Human Glue Gun.”

But their comments got me thinking. Lying in bed that night, I came up with a plan so exciting that it took me two hours to fall asleep.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was an impatient mother and frustration always kept me from enjoying life, until some strange insects came to my family.

It was Friday. We were having friends over for dinner, but Mike had to stay late at work. I was now on my own to get everything ready for the night. I could feel my frustration increasing as I drove to pick up Haydn and Michael from school. I rushed them into the car and told them that we were making a few stops before heading home, and that they needed to help me tidy the house. Both of them started complaining immediately. I turned and gave them fair warning that I was not in the mood to listen. For the next hour, I dragged the boys from one place to the next…

Just as we finished our last task, the boys reminded me that we needed to stop at the pet store to pick up crickets for their lizards. Fifteen minutes later, I pulled into the driveway with only forty-five minutes left to unpack the car, clean the house, and set the table before my guests arrived. How would I make it?

I started barking orders at the boys, but they were focused on pouring the crickets from the plastic bag into the top of their little cricket container. I just let off steam and yelled at them to hurry up.

I don’t really know how it happened, but the next time I looked up, one hundred crickets were jumping all over my kitchen…

My frustration exploded. I could feel myself about to start yelling in a way I rarely do. I watched my two sweet boys try anxiously to chase the crickets, screaming with laughter. Strangely, I felt something different.

In that split second, I realized I had two choices. Could I continue feeling annoyed and angry, or could I let go and enjoy this silly moment?

Ann loves dogs, but she doesn’t have time to keep even one. Her husband died from an accident, leaving little money but a 10-year-old son, Jack, who was recovering from a heart operation. She had to work all day to support the whole family. One morning, Ann found a lost dog wandering around the local school. She waited there for half an hour but nobody came back to look for it. She had no choice but to take it home and asked her sons to keep an eye on the dog on the day while she was working.

Ann took photos of the dog and printed off 400 FOUND fliers as soon as she came back from work. After a quick supper , Ann, with Jack went out and put them in mailboxes. The next day, Ann went to the dollar store and bought some pet supplies, asking the boy to look after it for another day, and she hoped it would be the last day. She didn’t forget to warn her son not to fall in love with the dog, for they had no money or time.

Four days later no one called to claim, so Ann’s family was still looking after the dog, whom they had started to call Riley. One day when she arrived home from work, the dog barked madly at her and dashed into the boy’s room where Ann found Jack suffering from a heart attack.

“If you had come to me ten minutes later,” the doctor said, “Jack would have not been saved.”

Still no one had called to claim the dog, and it had been the best friend of her son. Ann decided to keep it, although she knew it would bring so much difficulty.
