A Father’s Day Surprise

“Mano, do you know when Father’s Day is celebrated?” Ali asked his sister.

“Yes, it is going to be celebrated on June 19 this year. Yesterday my friend and I were talking about it.” Mano replied.

“Do you have any idea how we should celebrate this day and make it memorable for Dad?” Ali asked.

“Hmm... I was thinking about it too and have some ideas.” Mano answered excitedly. “What are you kids talking about?” their mum asked, entering their room.

“Mum, we were wondering about how to celebrate Father’s Day.” Mano said.

“Oh, I am surprised you kids remembered! Well, I am thinking of cooking some favorite dishes for your father. You both should think of ways to decorate the house beautifully.”Mum said.

“That would be great!”said Mano and Ali together. Both of them got up smiling, thinking of hundreds of ways to celebrate Father’s Day. Mum went to the kitchen, and Mano and Ali started doing their homework. But soon Ali noticed Mano deep in thought so he asked what the matter was. “Ali, I was thinking that our parents do everything for us and in return they want nothing. Isn’t it bad that we never think about them and are always concerned about our needs?” Mano replied. “Sometimes we are so busy with our lives that we don’t pay proper attention to our parents. We should listen to whatever they say properly and answer them. We must also study hard to get good grades.” Ali nodded.

The next day, all three of them, Mano, Ali and their mum, got busy preparing their surprise celebration for Father’s Day. Mano drew a family picture with her crayons, Ali bought balloons and candles and began writing a poem which he planned to sing that day. In short, a lot of things were being planned and prepared.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It had been only two weeks since my family moved to the new house near the woods during my senior 2 holiday. Yesterday I heard a new noise in the woods, not drowned out by bird calls. My first thought, a hopeful one, was a deer. What if I had a deer family living in the woods behind my house? A peaceful animal to symbolize the gentleness of our new life? Or could it be something dangerous, even terrifying? A dangerous animal, a wild man? But no. This was our new home. Our new life. There would be no monsters (怪物).

It could be a groundskeeper. Who was I kidding with monsters? We moved to rural. This wasn’t an absolute wilderness. There were trails in these woods, maintained by the Homeowners’ Association. So, what was it in the woods?

I made a plan. I put on long pants and boots and announced that I would walk into the woods and found the trail. I would look for signs of life — animal droppings, fur, satanic (邪恶的) symbols. My sister, Roger, wanted in. My brother, Ben, was busy showing all his toys to our grandfather, who came to visit us.

Roger and I went to the edge of the property line and kept going. Birds got quiet, sensing strangers. We walked on, not paying particularly good attention to landmarks. Without much trouble, we found the trail and a banyan tree with multiple trunks shooting out from the ground. Roger immediately climbed it and declared, “This is the fairy tree!” She threw her arms in the air, and asked me to take a picture with my smartphone. She was in boots and a dress and looked perfect among the trees.

Walking deeper into the woods, we found a clearing with some downed trees and declared it the “play area.” She climbed the fallen tree trunks and jumped off them, sent up a puff of dust. We continued our adventure until it was getting dark, but found nothing. We decided to go back.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给的段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

A young woman was waiting for her flight at an airport. She was leaving for London because she got a new job there. It was said that her new boss was a typical English gentleman — polite, modest, humorous and considerate. She was excited as well as a little nervous about her new life.

With several long hours before her flight, the woman hunted for a book in the airport shops, bought a packet of cookies and found a place to sit. She took out a book and started to read. Although she was absorbed in her book, she happened to see that the man sitting beside her, as bold as he could be, grabbed a cookie or two from the bag in between them. Educated to be well-mannered, she tried to ignore it to avoid an argument. But to show that she was the owner, she started to take cookies from that bag too. Unfortunately, the man didn’t get that hint, since he didn’t stop grabbing the cookies.

“How annoying!” she thought. As the greedy cookie thief kept eating, the woman munched (用力咀嚼) some cookies and watched the clock.

She was getting angrier as the minutes went by, thinking, “If I weren’t so nice, I would blacken his eyes.” With each cookie she took, he took one, too; when only one was left, she wondered what he would do.

With a smile on his face, and a nervous laugh, he took the last cookie and broke it in half. He offered her a half, and ate the other. She grabbed it from him, glared at him and thought, “Oh, brother. This guy has some nerve and he is so rude! Why didn’t he even show any gratefulness?”

She had never known when she had been so angry, and sighed in relief when her flight was called. She gathered her belongings and headed to the gate quickly, refusing to look back at the rude thief. She boarded the plane, sank in her seat, and looked for her book, which was almost complete.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

The day was Thankful Thursday, our “chosen day” of service. It’s a weekly tradition that my two little girls and I began years ago. Thursday has become our day to go out in the world and make a positive contribution, however small it is. On this particular Thursday, we had no idea exactly what we were going to do, but we knew that something would present itself.

Driving along a busy Houston road, I prayed for guidance in our quest to fulfill our weekly Act of Kindness. Around the noon hour, my two little ones wasted no time in letting me know their hunger, chanting, “McDonald’s, McDonald’s, McDonald’s” as we drove along. And I began searching earnestly for the nearest McDonald’s. Suddenly I realized that almost every crossroad I passed through was occupied by a beggar. And then it hit me!

If my two little ones were hungry, then all these beggars must be hungry, too. Perfect! Our Act of Kindness had presented itself. We were going to buy lunch for the beggars. After finding a McDonald’s and ordering two Happy Meals for my girls, I ordered an additional 15 lunches and we set out to deliver them. It was exciting. We would pull alongside a beggar, make a contribution, and tell him or her that we hoped things would get better. Then we’d say, “Oh, by the way, here’s lunch.” And then we would head to the next crossroad.

It was the best way to give. There wasn’t enough time for us to introduce ourselves or explain what we were going to do, nor was there time for them to say anything back to us. The Act of Kindness was anonymous and empowering for each of us, and we loved what we saw in the rearview mirror: a surprised and delighted person holding up his lunch bag and just looking at us as we drove off. It was wonderful!

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Arthur was messy. He didn’t try to make messes, but he didn’t try to clean up much, either. There were always small pieces of food on the table when he was done eating. His socks never made it into the hamper (洗衣篮). And he only picked up his toys when Mom threatened to throw them away. Most days, Mom followed Arthur around the house and cleaned up after him. She brushed the crumbs (碎屑) into her hand and threw them away after meals. She picked up his socks and made sure they got washed, dried and folded neatly before going back in the drawer. She often picked up his toys when he left them to do something else.

One day, Mom asked Arthur to pick up his toy trains. “Not right now,” Arthur said. He was reading a comic book. The trains had been on the living room floor since the morning.

“You know what, Arthur? I’m not going to ask you again. I’m done cleaning today.” And with that, Mom put her feet up on the sofa and picked up a book to read.

At dinner time, Arthur noticed that there was a big pile of crumbs at his place at the table. Mom’s spot was nice and clean. Arthur didn’t like the crumbs very much. After dinner, Arthur’s feet felt cold. He went to his room and opened his drawer, but the drawer was empty. “Mom, where are my socks?” Arthur called.

“There weren’t any socks in your hamper, so I didn’t wash them,” Mom said. Arthur felt unhappy. Now his feet would be cold, unless he wanted to wear dirty socks from the floor. He decided to stay barefoot.

When it was time for bed, Arthur said good night to Mom and turned to go upstairs. Arthur stepped right on his toy train in his bare feet. “Ouch!” cried Arthur. “That really hurt.”

6 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

I wasn’t the most popular kid in my freshman year. I wasn’t into fashion, preferred reading to sports, had difficulty talking to boys. Therefore, the first year of high school hadn’t been kind to me.I had no close friends. I mostly kept to myself with my head buried in a book.

Ashley was very different from me. She was outspoken and fashionable. She was quite popular. These were qualities I knew nothing about. We had always been in the same classes throughout school, but had never talked much.

During summer school, we were both taking classes. The teacher paired us up on an assignment. We met at the library to work on the project and really got well. Of course, Ashley did most of the talking. When classes ended we continued to hang out.

I looked up to Ashley; she was all of the things I thought I wanted to be. I began listening to the music she listened to, wearing the clothes she wore. I quit reading and started watching the TV programs Ashley watched. I even tailored my sophomore (大二) year schedule to her interests. I decided to take art class even though I had really wanted to take theatre.

When we started school again, Ashley introduced me to her group of friends, the“cool girls.” She was the leader of their group. Finally I ft in. I followed them around, laughing when they told jokes, agreeing when they had opinions. I didn’t say much. I wouldn’t want them to think that I was being rude by disagreeing. This continued for several months.

One day, I overheard Ashley and her friends were talking about me.

“She’s such a loser,“ one girl said to the group.“Ashley, she just follows you around trying to be you. She copies you;she doesn’t have a personality of her own.”

Then Ashley replied,“I know, I wish she would leave us alone. We were in summer school together and now she thinks we’re best friends or something."

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整的短文。

On our way to California, my husband Lee and I stopped at a restaurant to have lunch and stretch our legs a bit with our kids Jack and Jenny.

As we walked toward the entrance, an ugly looking doorman jumped up from a nearby bench and opened the door for us. “Good afternoon and welcome to Denny’s,” he said in a very joyful voice. In his hand he held a cup full of steaming coffee—which was inviting on such a cold day—but from the looks of the rest of him, it appeared that he hadn’t had a good meal or a shower in a long time. Obviously he was homeless. But regardless of his appearance, he greeted us as if we were his best friends, adding as we entered, “Today’s soup and sandwich special is a great deal.”

Once inside, my kids whispered to me, “Mom, he smells.” After we ordered our lunch, Lee and I explained the best we could, telling the kids to look beyond the dirt to the person underneath and within. As we explained, the four of us watched other customers approach the restaurant. They appeared unsure of the homeless man and many ignored him.

Seeing this rudeness truly frustrated me. When we were almost finished, I excused myself from the meal and went to the truck for my purse.

As I neared the front door, the doorman was opening it for a couple and welcoming them to the restaurant. They rushed past him and didn’t even acknowledge his presence. I let the couple come through first and then said a loud, and polite “thank you” to the doorman as I exited.

When I came back, we talked a lot. The doorman told me that the restaurant’s manager wouldn’t let him inside unless he purchased food. All l he could afford was coffee which, he said, didn’t count as “food” according to the manager, so he had to stay outside.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My father is a hard-working and friendly man. He taught me to drive, play baseball and fish when I was young. However, one other thing my dad's good at was holding a grudge(怨恨). For most of my teen years, he didn't speak to his younger brother, although they were at many family events together.

I was never sure why my dad was so angry with my uncle in the first place. They spent many festivals seated at opposite ends of the table. It was simply something that we all accepted at the time.

When I was nineteen, I got a call in my college dorm that my dad was having serious medical problems. My mom picked me up in the middle of the night so we could be there in time. However, my dad was arranged to transfer to a better hospital the next day. I couldn't fall asleep. I tossed and turned.

That morning, as my mom and I walked down the hallway of the hospital, we could see straight into my dad's room. A tall man wearing a stylish suit stood over my father's bed with his back to us. Casually, my mom remarked how nice it was for the doctor to come by to see my dad so early in the morning.

But through my misty eyes, something about the scene surprised me. The man with his back to us was standing very quietly. He was holding both of my dad's hands. It was definitely not a typical doctor's behavior. I stopped at the door of the room.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

“Mom!” I screamed as I looked through the window, “Why is my Ink Spot sitting in Mrs. Cleary’s window?”

Mom pushed past me to confirm it. Sure enough, across the street was Ink Spot cleaning himself in the window of Mrs. Cleary’s sitting room. I couldn’t believe my eyes. He was my cat, not Mrs. Cleary’s. She had already adopted twelve cats. Why must she keep my cat?I could feel anger boiling up inside me. Meanwhile, Ink Spot’s leaving without any signs upset me. A sense of being left out hit me hard.

Ink Spot was special for me. After my baby sister’s birth, “my” parents’ time was taken by her. It seemed no one in the family cared about or even noticed me. Worse still, I was packed off to a kindergarten. I hated being left out from the bottom of my heart.

It was when mom noticed me weeping in a corner one night that things began to change. After that, Ink Spot came into my life. Every night, he curled(卷曲)up beside me in bed and he was there for me after school when I raced home just to be with him.

I fell in love with Ink Spot the first time I saw its tiny black and white kitten, for which I called him Ink Spot. Mom and daddy beamed with pleasure as my eyes danced with joy again. It was the first time that I had smiled since my little baby sister came into the family. As for me, he was more than a cat. Actually, he was my life.

But today when I came home, Ink Spot was in Mrs. Cleary’s window. I wanted him back. But mom insisted that if Ink Spot stayed at Mrs. Cleary’s, that meant it was where he wanted to be. “No!Mom, Ink Spot is my cat”, I protested wildly but I had to admit the truth of mom’s words. Standing on the sidewalk, I was at a loss as to what to do. Staring at Ink Spot for a while, I couldn’t stand the anger any longer.

I walked towards Mrs. Cleary’s house hurriedly and knocked at the door angrily.
