It was around 7 on Monday morning. Paul, a ticket gateline assistant, was working his usual shift at Leagrave Station. “Another wonderful day!” he thought and began to hum (哼) a tune. Suddenly a flash of movement around Platform One caught his attention. After taking a closer look, he realized it was a dog without a collar, silly and excitable, running round after nothing at all.

“Oh!” he hurried down, appeared in a flash and successfully got hold of the dog, but it managed to struggle free out of his grasp, jumped down on the tracks and got stuck.

Panic struck among standers-by as the dog madly raced up and down the tracks, trying to find a way out. There was a lot of noise of people shouting and dog barking. Then the train kicked in.

Obviously, there was no time left to wait for the dog to jump out on his own, but he was not allowed to go down on the track. So he took out his phone and rang the signalman to warn the trains, getting them to slow down, ready to stop if necessary.

Like a cat on hot bricks, he looked around to find something useful. Luckily a guy on the platform there had some bread. So without any hesitation, Paul took the bread and used it to attract the dog as the last hope. Immediately, the dog came over to the platform edge with wagging (摇) tails. But it couldn’t jump back up. That’s not the thing, Paul thought.

Just as it put its paws up to get the bread, Paul managed to grab it. Thank goodness. Paul dragged it up on to the platform. He couldn’t let go of it for fear that it would struggle free a second time. He just held on, stroking its fur and patting on its head to calm it down. Finally he took the dog into the safety of the staffroom.

12-year-old Adele was from a poor family. Her parents struggled to make a living, so she still felt lucky they sent her to school.

One day, on her way home, Adele slowed down after hearing beautiful sounds from the corner of the street. “Wow! It’s lovely!” she said as she went closer to a small art school. She struggled to peep (偷看) in and saw that it was a piano. For some reason, her eyes were filled with tears. She wished to play the instrument, but her parents couldn’t afford to send her there.

Adele returned home with a heavy heart and couldn’t wait to pass by the art school again. She even pretended to press piano keys on the wall near her bed just like she was playing them for real. Seeing her do this, her parents were hurt but ignored it, because she was wishing for something beyond their means (钱财).

The following afternoon, after class, Adele silently went to the place she had stood the previous day. Almost one hour later she walked away unwillingly. Her wish to play the piano grew stronger.

Then as she crossed the street, she heard beautiful sound on the piano she’d never heard before. Curiously, she followed the sound and soon reached the doorstep of an old house. The door was open, so she invited herself into the house. “Hello… Is anybody in there?” she shouted.

The music stopped at once. An elderly woman stood there, smiling. Her wrinkled skin and gray hair showed her aged beauty. “Come here, sweetheart! How can I help you?” she asked Adele. The girl was scared, but she approached the woman and after seeing her warm smile. “I’m Adele, and I was walking by your house when I heard someone playing the piano… It’s so beautiful!” she said. The woman then invited Adele to sit with her and began playing again. Soon, the girl was lost in the different classic melodies (旋律) that afternoon. At one point, Adele began to cry, and the elderly woman stopped playing.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

“A nursing home would be safer, Dad,” Arlyn told her father, Jim.

“No way,” Jim interrupted. His wife passed away just a year before. At 91, he still wanted to remain in the cottage he and his wife had built.

Jim started experiencing an early sign of Alzheimer’s disease. Arlyn found his decline was indeed all-consuming. However, she herself was in her late sixties; her house was a 40-minute drive from the cottage. One day, when she read about a new eldercare service called Care. coach, it fueled her interest. For about $200 a month, a computerized avatar (头像) (controlled remotely by a human caregiver) would watch over a home-bound person 24 hours a day. She signed up immediately.

A week later, a tablet arrived. Following the instructions, Arlyn uploaded dozens of family pictures. Then an animated dog appeared on the screen. She presented the tablet to Jim, pointing to the screen pet, and said excitedly, “Here Dad. You have a new companion.” Jim, doubtful about the dog’s service, knew he had to learn how to get along with the dog before Alzheimer’s took hold.

Within a week, Jim and his dog, whom he named Pony, settled into a routine. Every 15 minutes or so, Pony would look for Jim calling his name if he was out of view. Sometimes Jim would “pet” to awake the sleeping Pony on screen. Pony reminded Jim which caretaker would be visiting to do the tasks: preparing meals, driving him to a senior center, etc. Pony would read poetry aloud or discuss the news. When Pony praised Jim’s sweater, Jim repaid by petting Pony’s screen with his finger sending hearts floating up from the dog’s head. One evening when Arlyn came to visit her father as usual, she was amazed to find that Pony was holding up a photo of her late mum to her dad between its paws.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Recently I got a job. It was exactly what I needed. The only challenge was that child care was really expensive in the UK, So I signed up with a nursery for my baby and paid over £1,300 for just one month. I signed all the necessary documents, among which stated that they had a no refund (退款) policy, so in case you missed some days, the money was not refunded regardless of the reason.

My baby was there for three days and got ill. I was forced to leave work to care for him. I was so worried as I had just started the job, but I had to take a few days off. By Friday he was so sick that he couldn’t eat, drink or walk, and I was terribly anxious. I had tests done only to find out that he had tested positive for COVID-19. We then had to self-isolate (自我隔离) for ten days. As the ten days were coming to an end, I got the virus from him and I tested positive, just as his repeated test results came back negative. So I had to self-isolate with him again for another ten days.

As 20 days had passed, the month was over and it was in December. The rest of the year was holidays and the nursery was not open during the holidays.

Just like that, I had lost £1,300 in three days and I was at home, not working. It meant that I didn’t earn anything either. I was so annoyed at first as it did not seem fair at all, given that my baby had gotten COVID-19 at the nursery. I called Ms Clark, who runs the nursery, and she told me they have a no refund policy which I had signed. I felt so helpless at that moment.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

On a cold morning, 79-year-old Donald planned a trip to a supermarket 30 miles away to get some groceries. It was far to go, but the store had bargain prices(特价), so it was worth the trip. He checked his pockets before he left. Wallet, house keys, bus token (专用辅币), he was all set.

When he arrived at the bus stop, he saw a young woman standing there. She was holding a baby and trying to get two kids to behave. “Stop it, Mike!” she cried, rocking the baby. “Stop it, Ricky!”

But the two kids, one looked about four and the other three, just wouldn’t listen. “Here now, boys,” Donald said. “Mind your momma!” Hearing a strange voice, the boys stopped and stared up at Donald with huge eyes. “Thank you,” the mother said. “My car broke down, and I have to take the baby to the doctor. But these two are a handful!’

“Are you new to the neighborhood?” asked Donald.

The woman smiled. “Yes! I’m Ellen, and Mark is my husband. We live in the pink house.” Donald smiled back. “That’s next door to mine! It’s good to have young people moving back into the neighborhood. Children bring things to life!”

Ellen sighed. “Right now, I’m just tired! My boys are just too lively! I had to rush out of the house this morning because of them.

Donald laughed. “I remember when my wife and I were young parents. We were tired all the time!”

Suddenly, Ellen started to look nervous. “I can’t find my wallet! Oh, no!”

“Look again,” Donald said kindly. “Sometimes when we are in a rush...”

“It’s not here!” Ellen cried. “What am I going to do? I have to be at the doctor’s in half an hour Please, Donald, could you lend me the money for the ticket?”

Donald shook his head. “I’m sorry, Ellen, I don’t have any money. I shop with my food stamps at this time of the month…”

Seeing Ellen look so sad, Donald said, “Take my bus token! The kids don’t have to pay, so it will get you to town!”

“But what about you?” asked Ellen anxiously.

“Don’t worry,” Donald told her. “I’ll go shopping next week!” Ellen accepted the token and got on the bus, managing to keep Mike and Ricky under control.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

“Hey, honey!” I said, hugging my seven-year-old, Jean Prince, as she got off the bus. “How was school?” I asked her as I always did.

“Well, not so real good,” she replied, looking sad. “Everyone has their pictures on the Reading Bulletin Board (布告栏) but me. I never get my picture up, not for math or reading or anything.” Her shoulders fell suddenly, and her chin began to shake clearly.

I’d like to believe that, with enough educational treatment, visits to the doctor, experimenting with different medicines for ADHD (多动症), and drill, practice, and patience at home, I can turn my Jean into a teacher’s “dream child,” the skilled and intelligent kid who gets everything right and never colors outside the lines.

But I can’t. And every failure is yet another blow to me, as well as to Jean. Taking a deep breath, I turned on the “building self-esteem (自尊)” mode. “Well, honey, I’m sorry. But I’ll bet something good happened to you today, didn’t it? What was the best thing that you did today?” Jean took her own sweet time, thinking things through. To my relief, she wasn’t, however, on the edge of tears anymore.

Finally, she brightened a bit and said slowly, “Yes, when I passed the gate of the park, I saw a little girl who was walking with her mother and she fell down and cried because her knee bled, I hurried home and took my Barbie doll and gave it to her. She loved it and stopped crying, her mother said thanks to me and I felt good.”

“Sweetie, that’s great!” I said excitedly.

“It is you who have told me that I should be kind and learn to share good things with others,” Jean replied.

I learned that Jean had saved from her allowance (零花钱) for the past month to get that doll, which was her favorite, so I thought to myself, “I will tell all these to Mrs Doe, Jean’s teacher.”
