Randy Heiss, 61, has lived in Bisbee, Arizona for more than three decades. Ten years ago, he and his wife lost their only child. They have no grandchildren.
The spot of red was what first caught Heiss’s attention on December 16, 2018. He was hiking the remote land behind his farm in a small town near the U. S.-Mexico border, and there lying on the grass was a balloon. He walked toward it with his dog, thinking he should pick it up and throw it away.
That’s when he noticed the balloon’s string was attached to a piece of paper. “Dayami,”it read on one side, in a child’s writing. Heiss flipped the paper over. On the back he saw a numbered list, all in Spanish. His Spanish wasn’t very good, but he could see it was a Christmas list!
Heiss was charmed. He suspected that a child had tried to send Santa Claus a Christmas wish list by balloon, something he used to do himself when he was a kid. Nobody had ever returned the letters Heiss had sent, but he wondered whether he could find the girl who had sent this one.
It would be difficult, but Heiss had a few clues. About 20 miles to the southwest, just across the border, was the city of Nogales, Mexico, with a population of about a quarter million. Based on the wind direction, he was almost sure that was where it came from. After her mother left, Ally reached for the photo album she and Dad had put together. On the cover was a photo of a tiny yellow bird with blue-gray wings and black eyes. Dad cut it from a local newspaper. Ally smiled, remembering the excited look on Dad's face when he showed her the pretty bird.
“I can't believe someone spotted this little guy way up here in New Jersey,” he said. “Wood warblers are usually found in the south, not this far north. I bet if we search really hard, Ally, we'll see this little guy together someday.”
Ally closed her eyes. She loved thinking about the times she and Dad had spent searching the woods for the little bird. They'd never spotted the warbler, but her father had an amazing way of making each outing seem special. He was her best friend.

A Narrow Escape
There was a huge three-acre pond just a few kilometers from where we stayed. Since moving into our new home in the countryside, my brother, Jim and I used to steal out to the pond where we would meet another friend. Dad had warned us not to venture anywhere near the pond area, especially after a friend informed him that a crocodile had been spotted there. We took no notice of his advice though. This was our favorite hideout and we were certainly not going to give it up.
On this particular afternoon, the three of us had just finished swimming. Jim and Syed were reluctantly making their way towards the spot where they had left their clothes. I stayed back and was bathing in the waist-deep water when I suddenly became aware of ripples (波纹) forming on the surface of the water. I looked at the ripples and my eyes caught a motion in the water. A crocodile, I thought. Then I saw it -its mouth and its two terrible eyes," Jim ..." I whimpered. Then I screamed with all my strength.
Jim turned his head in my direction and immediately recognized the danger. "Get out of the water, Jeff. Hurry! It's just behind you."
I struggled clumsily in the water. After a few ups and downs, I reached the edge of the pond. I looked over my shoulder. Moving swiftly towards me was an enormous crocodile. I froze. Then suddenly I felt a burning pain in my leg. Meanwhile, Jim and Syed screamed and started throwing stones at the crocodile and managed to distract it. The crocodile went for them now. As it opened its jaws, I could see its jagged teeth. I tried to move but a fierce pain shot through me. With the last strength, I struggled out of the pond.

By Saturday morning, we had a plan. We borrowed a really big bucket(水桶) from Mom, filled it with water and left it outside. The next morning, it was frozen solid. We packed snow all around the ice block as the base(底座) of the snowman. Then we built the other parts of it once again. The trap was set. and we waited for the snowman bullies(破坏者) to come.

"Of course not! We are going to buy a real Christmas tree, a real one!" Jack shrugged his shoulders and walked away.
Marcus walked slowly to his room and gathered his pocket money. It's only seven dollars. He thought that, with school out, he could earn enough money in two days to buy a tree and surprise Mama.
The next day, he stayed busy carrying goods to help shoppers. By the time he left, six more dollars were earned into his pocket. It was his lucky day and he expected that thirteen dollars should buy a small tree.
He whistled all the way to the tree lot（场地）. But even the smallest trees were fifteen dollars or more. Tomorrow would be busy with more shoppers. Marcus had to earn those extra dollars. He asked the seller in the tree lot: "Can you save this tree for me, sir?" "I can't," the man said, "but come back tomorrow. It might still be here." "I will be back." Marcus waved and dashed off.
