1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Once there lived a girl named Melanie. The little girl was living with a dream. She wanted to be a ballet dancer. Her body was very flexible and she had a strong will power. Melanie’s parents never knew of the great dancing skills their daughter had until one day, they saw the little one dancing with the beautiful steps of a ballerina (芭蕾舞女演员).

“Isn’t it strange? Melanie is dancing so well without any formal training!” the mother said.

“We must give her professional lessons to help her improve her skills,” her father said.

The following day, Melanie’s parents took her to a local dance training school. Upon meeting the dance teacher, her parents requested Melanie’s admission to the school. The teacher asked Melanie to dance. The little girl was happy and showed some of her favorite dance steps. However, the teacher didn’t seem interested in her performance. He kept himself busy with other tasks in the dance room while the little girl continued dancing with the hope of impressing the teacher.

“That’s OK. You can leave now!” the teacher said.

Melanie was shocked to hear this. So were her parents. They couldn’t believe their ears.

“The girl is average. She does not have it in her to become a ballerina,” the dance teacher said. “Don’t let her waste her time dreaming of one day becoming a dancer.”

Disappointed, Melanie and her parents returned home. Tears rolled down Melanie’s face. Her dreams were shattered (粉碎) within a matter of minutes. With crushed ( 被 击 碎 的) confidence, Melanie never attempted to dance again. She completed her studies and went on to become a teacher in school. Life was good and she kept herself busy with family and work. However, whenever she happened to pass the school’s ballet room, memories of childhood days danced before her eyes.

It was September 10, a warm Wednesday morning. Jennifer, a fifteen-year-old girl, was monitor of Class 908.As usual, she got up early, dressed herself and rushed out to the bus stop without breakfast. She was supposed to arrive at school at 7:00 o’clock because some of her classmates were planning to prepare for the celebration of Teachers’ Day.

When she got to the classroom, some of the students started to decorate their classroom with colorful paper-cuttings and balloons. Others went out to buy cakes, soft drinks and fruit. The blackboard was decorated with beautiful words, which read “Happy Teachers’ Day!”.

Mr Li, head teacher of that class, must have found it strange enough when he got close to the classroom. It was too quiet as if no student was in. He had never thought a complete surprise was waiting for him.

Entering the classroom, Mr Li was greatly surprised to find all the students standing in line, clapping hands and saying loudly “Happy Teachers’ Day!”. The girls began to sing songs for Mr Li and three boys showed their Chinese kung fu talent. So excited was Mr Li that he sang a new English song for all the students. What a wonderful time they were having!

At last, Jennifer, on behalf of the class, stood up, walking to the respectable teacher with the prepared flowers. She was about to present Mr Li with the flowers when she got fainted and fell to the ground. Immediately, Jennifer was sent to the hospital.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When Susan and her husband told their 12-year-old son Andy their family were visiting New Delhi, a dreamlike place for children, his little face was shining with wild joy. He had long been looking forward to exploring the imaginative kingdom, especially a stone forest, where there were various stones in different colors and sizes.

The two-day trip was very tight — first met their old friends the Millers and then met Andy’s expectation. When they reached their house, it was already 3 pm. Miller and his wife were happy to meet them after a long time. They sat in the drawing room and chatted about old times. Andy soon got bored with adult conversation and went out to play with the host’s children — Eric and Daisy — both of whom were around Andy’s age.

But Andy’s appetite(欲望) seemed never to be satisfied. As his name Andy conveyed, he was courageous and adventurous. Andy was impatient to inspect the route to the stone forest ahead so as to be a tour guide for his parents the next day! He forgot the grand dinner the Millers prepared for the evening.

At dinner time Eric and Daisy came running back, both excited about the special dinner, but Andy wasn’t with them. Alarmed, Miller asked them about Andy, but between the tense(令人紧张的) questions and nervous voices they became frightened, unable to convey anything. From little information they were able to explain, they guessed that the children had been riding their bikes in the neighbourhood lanes(小巷). At some point, Andy must have fallen behind, unable to keep pace, taken a wrong turn and lost his way.

Frightened, they all ran out in search of Andy. At the same time, Susan’s mind raced with all sorts of horrible situations — a part of the road was dug up for some construction work; what if Andy had fallen in? How far had he wandered? How alone and scared he must be in a strange town!

Actually, Andy was enjoying himself in the stone forest.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Mama Sebona lived on a hillside, a long way from the shop.

To get to the shop, she had to walk along the footpath, down the hill, through the river, along the valley and through the cornfields to the dusty road where there was a little white shop with a red roof under the gum trees (树胶树).

Mama Sebona had five children: Thandi, Sipho, Lindiwe, Themba and Busisiwe. They had never been to the shop.

One day, Mama Sebona needed to go shopping.

“Please, Mama, may we go to the shop with you?” begged the children. “We'll help you carry the shopping, Mama.”

So Mama Sebona said, “Yes.”

The children were very excited. They lined up behind Mama and set off down the footpath.

They went down the hill, through the river, along the valley and through the cornfields to the dusty road. And there, just a little way further, was the white shop with the red roof under the gum trees.

While the children looked around with big eyes at all the interesting things in the shop, the shopkeeper got a cardboard box and put it on the counter ( 柜台). Mama Sebona told him what she needed: cornmeal, sugar, coffee, apples and bread. Then she whispered quietly, “and a bag of sweets.”

The shopkeeper smiled and put one in the box quietly.

Then it was time to go. The children crowded around to help. Thandi took the cornmeal, Sipho took the sugar, Lindiwe took the apples, Themba took the bread and Busisiwe took the coffee. Mama Sebona took the box. The children all set off in a line behind Mama, down the dusty road.

As they walked through the valley, the children became tired and wanted to play games, so they began to ask Mama one after another to carry the shopping for them.

Mama sighed (叹气) and put the shopping in her box.

By the time Mama reached the river, the children were nearly at the top of the hill, running and laughing.

Mama walked slowly through the water. She sat down on a big rock on the other side. She put the box next to her. She rested her hands on her knees. She looked very tired.

Thandi looked back and saw her.

“What's the matter with Mama?” she cried.

All the children raced back down to the river.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I could hear one of my classmates expressing her impatience with my slow crawl up the ladder (梯子),“If she’s afraid of heights, why would she sign up for a Bungee Jumping (蹦极) class?” My friend was at the top of the ladder, trying to cheer me up. How did I wind up on a ladder hanging above the Hudson River?

It was my friend who invited me to the Bungee Jumping class. At first, I was doubtful, but her enthusiasm and guarantees of strict safety procedures won me over.

I had been fearful of heights since primary school. Avoiding my fear of heights became second nature. I tried not to look down at balconies or staircases. I avoided traveling by plane as much as possible. I declined invitations from friends to join them on roller coasters (过山车).

But here I was, at age twenty-six, facing my fear of heights in a rather extreme way. I had come around to the idea of trying Bungee Jumping. I figured it wasn’t much different from swinging on the monkey bars as a kid. The one obstacle I didn’t expect was the ladder. In order to reach the Bungee Jumping, I had to climb up a twenty-two-foot ladder.

My friend’s distraction techniques helped to take my mind off my dangerous task. I found a rhythm and kept going. With a slow and steady (稳定的) pace, I made it to the top.

An instructor tied me to a safety belt and told me to step to the edge of the platform. I held the Bungee Jumping bar with sweaty hands, surprised that it was too thick to fix my hand around. Instead of a firm grasp, my hands were in a weak, bear-claw position.

The cheers from my classmates rang out below. An instructor reminded me of the safety rules, including the net below that would catch me at the bottom. He reminded me to listen to the directions while in the air, so I could perform well.

2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

I stood face to face with my fear of heights.

7 . 阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

On Sunday, the second day of Spring Festival, a man was killed after he fell into the tiger enclosure while trying to get into the zoo in Ningbo, East China’s Zhejiang Province, without paying for a ticket.

The tragedy cost two lives, as the tiger was shot dead when zoo employees tried to rescue the man.

As news of the incident spread, the majority of voices online blamed the dead man for the animal’s death. Some said this was a sign that people are becoming more cold hearted. But they are wrong. People have been displaying increasingly more enthusiasm for helping those in need and participating in charity work. In 2016, the China Charity Federation received donations of 18.8 billion yuan ($2.7 billion) in total, 46 percent more than the donations received in 2015, and they sent helping hands to one tragedy after another.

People are just tired of forgiving those in the wrong. While sympathy is right, it has been abused too much. When somebody commits a crime, no matter how cruel the crime is, media outlets explain the criminal’s miserable childhood and there are calls for forgiveness. When someone smokes in public, there are always people calling for tolerance.

People are fed up and angry with lawbreakers escaping their due punishments in the name of forgiveness and tolerance.

But going back to the tragedy at the wildlife park in Ningbo, the tiger’s death shows the park was not well prepared for such emergencies. They did not have any tranquilizer guns that could sedate the tiger immediately and save the lives of both the man and the endangered animal.

In the meantime, it is necessary to raise people’s awareness that the animals in zoos and wildlife parks are not domesticated pets, and of the need for visitors to observe rules for their own safety.

The man in the Ningbo incident paid for his fault with his life, but the tiger was killed for his fault, too. We sincerely hope no more tigers or humans will pay for such fault.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Ada looked through the observation window at the kids below, all waiting in line to get into the pool. She turned to her mother with an angry expression on her face. “Mom, they’re all little kids! I’m 15 already! This is ridiculous, isn’t ?”

“I know, Ada,” replied her mother, “but you’re a beginner, too, and you have to start somewhere!”

Ada had never been to a swimming lesson in her life. Between schoolwork and helping on her grandfather’s farm, she hadn’t had time for lessons. The closest swimming pool Ada had been to was the inflatable (充气的) alligator pool her mother bought her when she was five. Now that Ada was older, her mother had found a new job in the city, and Ada faced a new challenge — school field trips to the local pool.

The first day that Ada went with her class to the pool, she had no idea what she was in for. What could be so difficult about swimming? Ada confidently slipped(溜) into the water and held onto the side of the pool, expecting to be able to touch the bottom with her feet. But when Ada let go of the side of the pool, she slipped under the water—the whole pool was one big deep end! Ada threw her arm toward the side of the pool and grabbed (抓住) the ledge (池壁), out of breath. “I really can’t swim! Everyone’s going to laugh at me!” she thought to herself in a panic.

On the next field trip to the pool, Ada sat on the side of a bench, frozen with fear. She huddled (蜷缩) with a towel over her shoulders, too embarrassed to try again. When she came home, her mother noticed right away that Ada was upset. “Honey, I want you to take Bella’s swimming lessons at the local pool. Soon you’ll learn how to swim just like everyone else,” she convinced Ada, showing photos of Bella with her prize-winning students. Ada felt doubtful whether the lessons would help, but she had to overcome her fear.
