1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I sat in the breakfast corner with my four-year-old son, Matthew, trying to ignore the ache in my stomach. I was still recovering from a surgery. I hoped for strength and happiness. But the future seemed so hopeless.

Matthew jumped up from his spot on the kitchen floor. “Bird!” he shouted, rushing to the sliding door. Sure enough, there was a white dove seated on a rubber tree. It sat there a few moments, and then flew away. I’d never seen one in our neighborhood before.

When I dragged myself to the kitchen the next morning, the dove was back. This time it was with a mate carrying twigs (嫩枝), “Look, Matthew,” I said, pointing to the tree. “They’re going to make a nest.” The doves flew in and out of the courtyard all week, building on the top of the rubber tree. Matthew could hardly contain his excitement. Every morning, he’d run into the kitchen and take his spot by the sliding glass door, talking to the birds while they worked. As much as I was grieving (感到悲伤), I couldn’t help but look forward to the doves’ visits too. We watched their progress as if it were a real-life soap opera unfolding before us. Gradually, my pain disappeared, replaced by joy.

Then it all went wrong. The courtyard was a safe enough spot for a nest, but the rubber tree’s broad, thin leaves were far from stable. One night, a strong wind blew through, throwing the doves’ nest to the ground. I heard the twigs break apart. Nothing good ever lasts. I wouldn’t blame the doves if they never came back. But they returned. And they paid no attention to the pi le of sticks that had once been their nest. They started again from scratch, though the wind destroyed all their hard work. The next day, and the next, they renewed their efforts, as if nothing had happened.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Ada looked through the observation window at the kids below, all waiting in line to get into the pool. She turned to her mother with an angry expression on her face. “Mom, they’re all little kids! I’m 15 already! This is ridiculous, isn’t ?”

“I know, Ada,” replied her mother, “but you’re a beginner, too, and you have to start somewhere!”

Ada had never been to a swimming lesson in her life. Between schoolwork and helping on her grandfather’s farm, she hadn’t had time for lessons. The closest swimming pool Ada had been to was the inflatable (充气的) alligator pool her mother bought her when she was five. Now that Ada was older, her mother had found a new job in the city, and Ada faced a new challenge — school field trips to the local pool.

The first day that Ada went with her class to the pool, she had no idea what she was in for. What could be so difficult about swimming? Ada confidently slipped(溜) into the water and held onto the side of the pool, expecting to be able to touch the bottom with her feet. But when Ada let go of the side of the pool, she slipped under the water—the whole pool was one big deep end! Ada threw her arm toward the side of the pool and grabbed (抓住) the ledge (池壁), out of breath. “I really can’t swim! Everyone’s going to laugh at me!” she thought to herself in a panic.

On the next field trip to the pool, Ada sat on the side of a bench, frozen with fear. She huddled (蜷缩) with a towel over her shoulders, too embarrassed to try again. When she came home, her mother noticed right away that Ada was upset. “Honey, I want you to take Bella’s swimming lessons at the local pool. Soon you’ll learn how to swim just like everyone else,” she convinced Ada, showing photos of Bella with her prize-winning students. Ada felt doubtful whether the lessons would help, but she had to overcome her fear.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It is hard not to thirst for victory in all your efforts when the world seems so competitive, especially if you’re a boy growing up with those values. A boy grew up in a similar environment where winning was all that was valued, and he longed to succeed. The boy was good at running, so he called everyone in the nearby villages for a race. A large group of people from around came to see this exciting event!

The boy had been training hard for this race. He ran among the strongest boys from around the villages, and it looked like heat on a finish line, but the young boy came out victorious! The crowd went wild with joy as they cheerfully waved (挥舞) flags praising him. The boy loved the attention. It made him feel happy and vital (生气勃勃的).

But among the crowd was a wise older man who did not seem as impressed with the boy’s fleets (舰队) as the rest. Just as the boy thought all the races for the day were over, the old man shouted from the crowd, “There is one more race left, the most important one.” The boy was firstly surprised by the additional race, but he was confident he could win any race.

The old man brought two new competitors for the boy, a blind man and a weak old lady. “I can easily win them,” the boy said. When the boy crossed the finish line, the blind man was still at the start, and the old lady had just started to move. The boy got his victory but he noticed that the crowd wasn’t cheering. The boy was shocked. So, he asked the old man what had happened. The old man said, “Let’s start the race again, but all three of you finish together this time.”

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I wasn’t a popular kid in the first year of high school. In fact, I was awkward. I had no close friends. I mostly kept to myself with my head buried in a book. This was why I was so surprised when Ashley and I became friends the summer before the second year.

Ashley was quite popular. We had always been in the same classes throughout school, but had never really talked much.

During summer school, we were both taking classes. The teacher paired us up on an assignment (任务). Ashley seemed unwilling to work with me at first, but she agreed because none of her friends were in the class. We met at the library to work on the project. When classes ended we continued to hang out.

I looked up to Ashley. I began listening to the music she listened to and wearing the clothes she wore. I quit reading and started watching the TV programs she watched.

When we started school again, Ashley introduced me to her group of friends. I followed them around, laughing when they told jokes, and agreeing when they had opinions though I disagreed with them. This continued for several months.

One day, I skipped (悄悄溜走) out of my last class a few minutes early so I could get a table in the canteen for our group. I sat down in the seat and began working on some homework, awaiting their arrival. Concentrating on my paper, I didn’t notice that they had sat down at the table behind me. Before I could say a word, I realized what they were talking about. I listened silently. “She’s such a loser,” one girl said. “She just follows you around trying to be you. She doesn’t have a personality of her own,” another girl added. Then Ashley herself replied, “I know. I wish she would leave us alone. We were in summer school together and now she thinks we’re best friends.” I was shocked and heartbroken. I didn’t know they thought of me in that way. I got up and ran out the door. The girls sat in silence as they realized I had heard the whole conversation.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

On November 27th last year, I was waiting to check out at a local store.

The clerk(售货员) was very busy because it was Thanksgiving Day. Besides usual snacks and daily necessities, people were buying kinds of food and flowers. It was about 5 p. m. and still light outside, but people seemed to be hurrying back to their cars. As it was the rush hour, with people anxious to get home from work, few of the people in line responded(回应) to the clerk’s greetings(问候). Even fewer people wished the clerk a nice evening.

Surprisingly, one elderly woman who was paying for ice cream and some snacks smiled at the clerk who was taking what seemed to be the woman’s last 20 dollars and 21 cents. The elderly customer nodded in the direction of the flowers and said to the clerk, “I hope someone will bring you some flowers tonight.” The clerk smiled, saying a bit regretfully, “That would be nice, but I don’t think it’s likely to happen. My husband and I both have to work till midnight today.”

Hearing that, the customer seemed to be lost in thought. She accepted her bag, thanked the clerk and then headed towards her old car outside the store.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day, Robert and Henry were going home from school, when, on turning a corner, Robert cried out, “A fight! Let's go and see!”

“No,” said Henry. “Let us go quietly home and not meddle with (插手) this quarrel. We have nothing to do with it and may get into trouble. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don't want them to worry about me.”

“You are a coward (懦夫), and afraid to go,” said Robert, and he ran. Henry went straight home and in the afternoon went to school as usual.

But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn’t want to play with him together. Henry was sad but he wasn't angry with Robert for his rude behavior, because he learned that true courage is shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored (忽视) the other boys' laughter and continued to go to school and study as well. However, Robert didn't invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward. Everyday after school, they didn't go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun.

A few days later, Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth. He struggled, and screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could, but they did not even try to help him.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

That night, I quarreled with my mother, then stormed out of the house. While on the road, I remembered that I did not have any money in my pocket, I did not even take my cell phone with me to make a call home.

At the same time, I went through a noodle shop, and I suddenly felt very hungry. I wished for a bowl of noodles, but I had no money!

The seller saw me standing before the counter and asked, “Hey little girl, you want to eat a bowl?”

“But … but I do not carry money …” I shyly replied.

“Okay, I’ll treat you.” the seller said, “come in, I will cook you a bowl.”

A few minutes later the owner brought me a steaming bowl of noodles. After eating some pieces, I cried.

“What is it?” He asked.

“Nothing. I am just touched by your kindness!” I said as I wiped my tears. “Even a stranger on the street gives me a bowl of noodles, and my mother, after a quarrel, chased me out of the house. She is cruel (残忍的)!!”

The seller sighed, “Girl, why did you think so? Think again. I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you felt that way. Your mother has been taking care of you since you were little, why were you not grateful and why did you hurt your mom?”

I was really surprised after hearing that.

Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful, and my mother has raised me since I was little and I have never felt so, not even a little.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was hiking in Panama over Christmas in 2018, and planned to climb Volcán Bard. I set off before sunrise. I planned to reach the top by midday, and return before dark to get to my hotel.

The first part of the climb was beautiful. There were trees all around, and a dirt road for the farmers who work around there. I walked for an hour and reached a fair height. The views were beautiful, so I stopped to take a photograph. Suddenly I heard crazy barking behind me.

I turned and saw two dogs running towards me. I expected them to stop, but they didn’t. As they got closer, I could see that they were black dobermans (杜宾犬). Their teeth looked sharp, and they looked angry. There was nowhere for me to run. I tried to keep calm, but my heart was racing. They stopped a dozen feet from where I stood and kept barking. I knew they could move fast, so I didn’t want to try to run.

I kept walking, saying, “Good dog, calm down,” as peacefully as possible. But I was terrified. Then one rushed up and sunk his teeth into my leg below the knee. He held on for a few seconds. And then he came back and bit me again. The pain took my breath away as I felt his teeth in my leg. I considered bending down to get a rock to fight him off, but was nervous in case he went for my neck or the other one attacked me. I was thinking I might not get out of this alive.
