1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

“Hey!” the voice called from behind me. “Are you a girl or a duck?” I ignored the comments because I knew they were from the mean girl, Betsy. I ran to my class, causing my slight limp (跛行) to become even more apparent (明显). Already, I could see that things would be different here. At my old school, I had a group of friends to protect me. However, in this new school, I was on my own. I took my place in the first row of desks and I was thankful for alphabetic seating (按字母顺序排列座位). My last name came at the beginning of the alphabet and Betsy’s last name came at the end of it. As the weeks went on, though, I made friends with two girls named Fran and Lisa who sat near me in class. Whenever Betsy made one of her comments, they would wave it off and tell me to ignore her.

Still, I hated that I didn’t walk like everyone else. I didn’t like not being able to run as fast or as straight as the other kids and I didn’t like getting picked last for teams in gym class. Mostly, though, I really hated it when people like Betsy made negative comments about how I walked.

One day, our teacher asked us to change seats. “Class,” our teacher addressed us one morning, “you’ve been in the same seats for a full term and you’ve become friendly with the students around you. Now it’s time to change seats and make some new friends.” The class let out a collective moan (集体抱怨). As she assigned the new seating, Fran, Lisa and I looked at each other and waited for our names to be called. We didn’t want to be separated. And we especially didn’t want to sit anywhere near Betsy. Finally, Betsy sat directly behind me.

I knew this wasn’t going to be good and I soon discovered I was right. Betsy often leaned (倚靠)into my back, “Quack, quack!” When I ignored her, she kicked my seat. When that didn’t work, she poked (戳) me. This went on daily until one morning I simply refused to go to school. I told Mum what had happened at school.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

It was raining pretty hard on Halloween, but that wasn’t going to stop my little sister Kate and me from trick or treating. We decided to start at Miss Parson’s house. Miss Parson was loved by us kids who lived nearby because she often shared her self-made cookies with us. We usually finished them in a second, especially when we were hungry after class. Sometimes, when we visited her or did something for her, she always gave us a surprise.

Kate and I wondered what kinds of treats she’d offer. As we walked down the street, I held an umbrella, a bag for candy, and my sister’s hand. Jackolanterns gave soft light along the street. Spider webs hung in all the windows. Parents who were dressed up like monsters(怪物) stood in doorways. After we had walked a few blocks, we were wet from head to toes, and I felt Kate was trembling with cold.

There was a light on at Miss Parson’s house, but there were no ghosts, goblins(小妖精), or Jackolanterns. We climbed up the steps and saw Miss Parson through a window. She was drinking a cup of hot tea.

“Maybe she doesn’t celebrate Halloween,” Kate said with a sigh, disappointedly.

“Well, even if she doesn’t, she usually likes it when we visit her,” I said and knocked on the door.

Miss Parson seemed surprised when she opened the door and saw our dressing.“Is today Halloween?” she asked.“I completely forgot. I am so sorry.”

Paragraph 1:

Miss Parson rushed us into her house.

Paragraph 2:

The next morning, a hot and sweet discussion about Miss Parson and Halloween spread among us kids.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man called Ben was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room's only window. The other man, Leo, had to spend all his time flat on his back.

The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation.

And every afternoon when Ben could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. Leo began to live for those one-hour periods where his world would be broadened and lightened by all the activity and color of the world outside.

The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm among flowers of every color of the rainbow. Grand old trees graced the landscape, and a fine view of the city could be seen in the distance. As Ben described all this in detail, Leo would close his eyes and imagine the beautiful scene.

One warm afternoon Ben described a parade passing by. Although Leo couldn't hear the band — he could see it in his mind's eye as the gentleman by the window described it with descriptive words. Each time the nurse saw the warm and touching scene, she was always struck by devoted friendship between these two men. Days and weeks passed.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Being a single parent can be extremely difficult. I recently went through a rough time while raising my four daughters on my own. Things had not been going well for me ever since we decided to take care of ourselves. My financial situation was not great since I had four growing girls to feed on my own. As a result of that, my family car was left in bad shape. As it broke down from time to time, I only used the car when it was absolutely necessary to do so.

But one rainy night, we desperately needed groceries so the five of us went for a quick run to the store. Once we had loaded groceries to the car, it wouldn’t start no matter how I tried. I was helpless in the parking lot with my four daughters aged 9, 5, 2 and a 6-weeks old. To make matters worse, I was not able to call anyone because my phone was disconnected.

One of my girls had mistakenly left a light on, and my battery was dead. I had no family to speak to and was on my own. I must have asked more than twenty people for help during the two hours. They all ignored me. Not even a no. They just acted like I didn’t exist. My 5-year-old was melting down. My newborn screaming, my two-year-old crying she was hungry, and my oldest desperately trying to help. I was crying and felt like the worst mom ever

When everything seemed hopeless, an elderly man, most probably in his 70s, came over and gave me a plate of chicken strips, biscuits and some water. He asked me to feed my girls and myself. He also said that he arranged for a tow truck to come get my car and his wife was on the way to fetch us back home. The tow truck came, the old man’s wife arrived to fetch us and we were finally back home.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

At noon that day, I drove back to my house after the performance. Just as I entered the living room, I heard a gentle sound coming from the bedroom upstairs—it was the sound of my favorite violin.

“Thief!”

I dashed upstairs. Sure enough, as expected, a boy of about 12 years old was petting my violin. The boy had messy hair and a thin face, his oversized coat seemingly filled with something. At first glance, I found a new pair of shoes missing. It seemed that he was surely a thief.

Then, I saw his eyes full of fear and despair. My anger was immediately replaced by a smile, I asked, “Are you Mr. Ram’s nephew, Michael? I’m his housekeeper. Two days ago, I heard his nephew living in the countryside will come. It must be you. You’re really like him!”

On hearing my words, the boy was first astonished, but then quickly said, “Has my uncle gone out? I think I’d better first go out for a walk and visit him again in a while.”

I nodded and asked the boy who was preparing to put down the violin, “Do you like to play the violin so much?”

“Yes, but I’m so poor that I can’t afford it,” the boy replied.

“Then, I give this violin to you.” The boy looked at me questioningly, but he picked up the violin. Going out to the living room, he suddenly saw on the wall my huge color photo I performed in the Sydney Opera House. He involuntarily trembled for a moment and ran out without looking back.

I was sure that the boy had understood what happened because no one would decorate the living room with the housekeeper’s photo.

Mike was an 11-year-old boy. He was the only son to his parents. His father was a carpenter and his mother was a housewife. Although they weren't rich, they led a happy life.

Mike’s school was located a mile away from his home. Mike’s birthday was coming in a week. He requested his father to buy him a bicycle so that he could go to school by bicycle. His father also promised to buy him a bicycle so that he needn't walk to school anymore. Mike felt so happy.

The birthday boy woke up happily with his parents wishing him with all smiles. He was glad and expected that his father would gift him a bicycle. His father gave him a nicely-wrapped gift. Mike opened it and saw a set of books. Although he was a little unhappy as he did not receive a bicycle, he thanked his father. Mike’s father was depressed as he did not have enough money to buy Mike a bicycle. He promised to his son that he would buy him a bicycle soon.

After a week, when Mike was walking on his way to his home back from school, he saw a boy riding a bicycle. Mike felt that the bicycle was too small for the big boy. The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy was in decline, some people in the town had lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were trying to help each other meet the challenges.

Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She knew they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would bring food and medicine to them.

One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed, his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boy -his name was Bernard-had interested her very much.

“I wish you could see him,” she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. “He is such a help to his mother. He wants very much to earn some money, but I don't see what he can do.”

After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard. “I wish we could help him to earn money,” said Clara. “His family is suffering so much.”

“So do I,” said Harry. “We really should do something to assist them.”

For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried, “I have a great idea! I have a solution that we can all help accomplish(完成).”

The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one. “I tell you what we can do,” said John. “You know that big box of corn Uncle John sent us? Well, we can make popcorn(爆米花), and put it into paper bags, and Bernard can take it around to the houses and sell it.”

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

Growing up, we didn’t have much money. Actually, we had very little. We lived in a small house with holes in the floor. We wore old clothes and had little food. With three little mouths to feed, my daddy worked as a gatekeeper in a middle school and then farmed our own small field until dark. Daddy provided the best he could for us and mama made our clothes on her old sewing machine. We could have easily applied for welfare, but my parents wouldn't think of it. Our family was full of love and proud of hard work

Then I was in the third grade, in Mrs. Harper’s class. One day, Mrs. Harper brought a huge box of toys to school to give to “poor” children. Everyone was invited to bring some of his or her own toys from home to put in the box. Needless to say. I had hardly any toys of my own to offer.

My eyes got big the next day when I looked into that box. It was like a dream world to me — so many colorful toys! Clearly, Mrs. Harper saw the curious look on my face, and although I never asked with a smile, she let me pick out two toys for myself from the box. I was so thankful and thought that I was the luckiest girl in the whole world!

When I got home. I couldn't wait to show mama what I brought from the school. She admired the toys and asked where I got them. I told her about the box for the poor children and that Mrs. Harper had let me pick two toys from the box!Mama thought for a few seconds and said in a very sweet way, “No…no, You can’t keep these two toys.”
