1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

Peter woke up early in the morning. He went downstairs in a hurry and started to have his breakfast as quickly as possible.

“Why are you in such a hurry, early bird?” Mum asked him. “We will have an English spelling test today, Mum,” Peter said. “Mr. White promised to offer prizes to those who get 100 scores. I’ve been studying the word list since last week. Although the words are difficult, I am well prepared for them.”

Peter reviewed the spelling of each word once more carefully when Dad drove him to school. At last, it was time for the students to have a test. “Responsibility,” Mr. White started. Peter wrote it on his test paper quickly and confidently.

“The second word: contribution,” Mr. White said.

“So easy,” Peter thought. He quickly wrote the word down.

Thirty words later, the test papers were collected by Mr. White. “I am to mark your papers now,” he told the class. After marking the test papers, Mr. White said, “Three of you won a prize today for excellent test scores. Peter, David and Mary got full marks on the spelling test!”

Mr. White praised them. Meanwhile, he gave the three students each a dictionary. Peter’s was an English-Chinese dictionary—the one he liked best. Peter was so excited that he held it high when his classmates cheered. “This is my happiest moment,” Peter thought.

After Mr. White gave the test paper back, Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word “contribusion” confused him. It didn’t seem right. Peter began to compare them after taking out the word list. “C-O-N-T-R-I-B-U-S-I-O-N,” he whispered. He spelled it wrong.

“What am I to do?” Peter said to himself. “I expect my classmates to think I’m a master at spelling. If I tell Mr. White one of my spelling words is wrong, I’ll have to give my prize back, or I will become an example for telling a lie.”

Staring at the full marks written on his test paper, Peter was lost in thought. After a while, he remembered a lesson Mum used to teach him, “We ought to be an honest person.”

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

“I wish my mother had a ring like those the ladies wear at the hotel,” said Hiram Green to himself one day. Hiram was the son of a fisherman, but the fisherman had died when Hiram was a little boy. Hiram’s mother took on sewing work to earn money to support herself and her son. He helped her when he could re out of school hours, and during vacation time. He had two uncles who had taught him how to catch shrimps. With the money he earned by selling them he could buy things for his own use or pleasure. He had a “bank” almost full of what he called his “shrimp money.”

The sight of the flashing diamonds on the hands of some of the summer visitors at the fishing village in which he lived had added a new article to the list of beautiful things his mother would own someday. He had heard that just one single diamond was sometimes worth five hundred dollars or more. This had discouraged him very much.

But one day, he happened to pass a shop in the neighboring town and saw a number of diamond rings displayed in the window. He stopped fascinated, and pressed his face against the glass eagerly to see if any prices were marked upon them. Imagine his surprise when he saw upon the largest one a tag marked $4.75. He looked again to see if he had made a mistake. Perhaps it was $475. But no, he knew enough about figures to see that he was right the first time.

He went home as fast as he could, and ran up into his bedroom. Then, he opened his “bank” and counted its contents. “Three dollars and twenty-two cents!” he cried. “I’ll have that ring before another week.” Hiram worked early and late for the next few days. He caught more shrimps than he had ever caught in the same length of time, and sold them readily.

Mr Brown lived in a house less than two miles away from his office. He was therefore able to drive home every day for lunch. Every time he drove in the middle of the day, he found cars were parked in the road outside his house, and there was no room for his own car. He had to drive two blocks farther before he could find a place to park. Then he had to walk home. This made him very angry.

He had put up a board which read “No Parking in the garden facing the road, but nobody seemed to pay attention to it, People only obeyed a police notice, but not a private one. There were no parked cars where there was a blue board with white letters on it: Police Notice——No Parking.

Mrs. Brown suggested that he should steal a police notice. But he dared not, being afraid of going to prison. She then suggested that he make one just like a police notice. He said he was not a policeman and couldn't use the word “police”. He decided that he must find a way out and started thinking hard. For several days, the smell of paint filled the house. One night he showed his wife a new notice board. It was painted in white letters on a blue board: Polite Notice-No Parking!

“Oh,” Mrs. Brown said, “but you told me you weren't going to use the word‘ police’. That's exactly like a police notice.”

“Is it?” he asked. “Look again”

She began to laugh, “You are really rather clever.”

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

The Girl No One Talked to

Last year there was a girl at our school who hardly anyone talked to. I think it was because she seldom showered, so she kind of smelled bad. Her name was Cindy Lindburg. I didn't know exactly where she lived, but it must have been somewhere in the neighborhood because we always got on the school bus at the same bus stop.

Cindy Lindburg didn't have many friends. She always came to the lunch room alone and left alone. On the bus, no one offered her a seat, and she never asked because she was sort of a shy person. She seemed like a nice girl—who had an odor problem.

One day, I was walking up to the bus stop and I saw Carl Littleton making fun of her. I couldn't hear what he was saying, but I saw the way he was laughing and rolling his eyes in his typical poking-fun-at-you way. I also saw how sad it made Cindy. Clutching her notebook to her chest like a shield, she stared at the ground and moved as far away from him as possible without leaving the bus stop entirely. As soon as I got close enough, I glared at Carl to make him stop laughing-even though I knew he probably wouldn't. He didn't. So I walked over and stood closer to Cindy so she wouldn't feel so bad. It was just one of those times when you knew someone needed someone to be a friend.

I didn't think she'd say anything, but she did. Her eyes peeked up from staring at the ground and as though she thought I'd be embarrassed if anyone heard her speak to me, she whispered, “Hi.”

“Hi,” I said. Then as loudly as I could, I said, “Don't pay any attention to Carl. His parents have been unsuccessful in teaching him some manners.” Seeing she had company, Carl left.

The comment didn't even rouse a smile out of Cindy.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

A Gift I Treasure

It was just a week before my seventeenth birthday. Party preparations had started. My family never celebrated birthdays on such a grand scale. However, this was a double celebration. I had a passed A level examination with flying colors and my parents thought this was an occasion to celebrate.

The whole house was full of activities. Complete cleaning had started a week before. There was a continuous work in and out as everyone went about doing their share of the work. Mama, who was the chief event organizer, was busy planning the budget and the menu. Papa was in charge of paying for the different purchases. My siblings (兄弟姐妹) were busy sending out the invitations. Even Grandpa, who enjoys watching his favorite Cable TV from the comfort of his armchair, did not want to be left out. He made numerous trips to town to run errands (跑腿) for Mama.

Grandpa and I shared a special bond. Perhaps it was because I was his oldest grandchild. He was always there for me and he would offer me his shoulder to cry on whenever I was depressed. He seemed to be the happiest man to celebrate my birthday and he even secretly whispered to my ear that he was going to give me a great gift on that day.

Two days before my birthday, Grandpa complained of chest pains. We rushed him to the hospital but he refused to be admitted. He was given a lot of medicine instead. When he came home, he remained in his room. Whenever I went into his room, he managed a smile. I could see that he was very tired. The corners of his mouth and eyes had numerous wrinkles while the skin on his skinny limbs had shriveled. I felt a stab of pain in my heart each time I saw him.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

On May 22, 2011, Joplin Missouri was struck by one of the deadliest tornadoes in recorded history. At first, many residents, including me, felt hopeless. It seemed like the end of the world. Faced with confusion, uncertainly, loss and homelessness, we looked for any light to lead us out of the darkness.

The home of my parents, who were in their eighties, was severely damaged. Their roof was blown away, and the roof from a nearby school crashed into the front of their house. In seconds, the house they had lived in for years became impossible to live in.

As soon as my parents safely moved, I tried to determine if any of their remaining possessions could be saved. Regrettably, I discovered their roof, before departing for parts unknown, had dropped massive amounts of fiberglass insulation. This pink material made everything appear to be coated in cotton candy, but the glass fibers within it had ruined most of their furniture and clothing.

My parents had hoped, however, that I might be able to save some of their books and pictures. Unfortunately, every time I tried to remove a photo album from a drawer of a book from a shelf, the non - stop rain wet what I was hying to protect. Between the rain and the glass fibers, it all seemed hopeless.

Trying to fight off hopelessness, I took a minute to stand in what was left of my parents' bedroom. When I looked up through their non-existent proof, I saw gray clouds floating above me, and suddenly everything seemed so strange. Rain coated my upturned face, flooded my eyes, and flowed into my mouth. Overwhelmed, I felt like I was drowning, I needed fresh air, so I ran outside.

Standing on my parents' front yard in the rain, I could breathe better but I still had an overwhelming sense of hopelessness.

The year I turned 30, my friend Erin and I decided to hike part of Newfoundland’s East Coast Trail—215 kilometres between Cappahayden and St. John’s where the wild scenery was very charming! The path there would bring us great fun.

Neither of us had gone on a hiking trip longer than five days and now we were in for 14, but we were excited. Nature! Strength! Character! Our hike would end up giving me all of those things in cruel abundance, but there was one take-home I didn’t expected: proof of the astonishing kindness of strangers.

As a shy woman schooled in the risk of stranger danger, I’m not one to open up to people I don’t know. In Toronto I don’t even chat with my seatmate on the subway or in a grocery line, and I certainly don’t ask for help unless I’m desperate. But on this hike I had to learn new ways to cope.

Over our first two days we covered less than 30 kilometres, most of it in the rain. What had been a gentle mist when we started evolved into a downpour by the second day. Nothing dried overnight, everything was wet. The roads were rugged, with muddy patches so deep that stepping in the wrong place meant mud to mid-calf—which is to say over and into your boots. We squelched(发出嘎吱声)with every step.

All that was very awful for me. On our second day, as we were still on a road looking like cats left in the rain, a woman and her parents making their way from car to house caught sight of us and took pity. “Would you like to come in for a cup of tea?” Jenny asked.

“Thank you!”

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一 篇完整的短文。

I was still a thief when I met Anil. And though only 15, I was an experienced and fairly successful hand.

Anil was about 25—a tall, thin fellow—and he looked easy-going, kind and simple enough for my purpose. I might be able to get into his confidence.

I gave him my most appealing smile. “I want to work for you.” I said.

“But I can't pay you.”

Perhaps I had misjudged the man. I asked, “Can you feed me?”

“Can you cook?”

“I can cook.” I lied.

“If you can cook, then I can feed you.”

The meal I cooked that night must have been terrible because Anil gave it to a stray dog and old me to be off. But I just hung around smiling in my most appealing way, and he couldn't help laughing.

Later he patted me on the head and said never mind, he'd teach me to cook. He also taught me to write my name and said he would soon teach me to write whole sentences and to add numbers. I was grateful. I knew that once I could write like an educated man there would be no limit to what I could achieve.

One evening he came home with a small bundle of notes, saying he had just sold a book to a publisher. At night, I saw him put the money under the mattress (床垫).

It's time I did some real work, I told myself. After all, he doesn't even pay me.

Anil was asleep. I crept up to the bed. Anil was sleeping peacefully. My hand slid under the mattress, searching for the notes. When I found them, I drew them out without a sound. Anil sighed in his sleep and turned on his side, towards me. I was frightened and quickly crawled out of the room.

I began to run, holding the notes by the string of my pajamas (睡衣). But I slowed down and sat down in the shelter of the clock tower. I should go back to Anil, I told myself, if only to learn to read and write.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头话续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

After an exhausting day, Jack wandered in the street, smiling while thinking of his students. Jack was a respectable and considerate teacher while his students took good care of him, too.

Suddenly, a familiar figure flashed into Jack's eyes. It was Mark, his junior high school teacher. With thrill, Jack dashed forward, greeting enthusiastically, “Mark, how are you?” Taking out his presbyopia (老花镜),Mark studied the passionate young man in front of him, hesitated for a moment, and got confused, “Sorry? Have we met before? ”

Not disappointed at all, Jack introduced himself in delight, "Sorry, Mark. I'm Jack Smith, from Class 2, Grade 8, graduating from Kevin Junior High School in 2001. Now I'm a teacher." Hearing the words, Mark was puzzled but also delighted, asking a series of questions, “Why can't I remember you? Are you a teacher now?" In spite of poor eyesight, Mark did have such a brilliant memory that he could even remember almost all his students,

“Well, in fact, you only took charge of our class for only one day, and something happened that day. I became a teacher because of your inspiration/'

The old Mark, curious, kept raising questions such as when they met, how he had inspired him to be a teacher, and so on.

“One day, a friend of mine came in with a nice new watch. I was so crazy about it that I decided to take it and I did. After a short while, my friend found it disappear and immediately reported to the teacher, you, who happened to be in charge of our class for that day because our teacher was ill”

A mixture of emotions floated in Jack's eyes on recalling the shameful history. That day, Mark came and told the whole class that someone in the class could not find his watch and whoever took it, please return it. Jack was too frightened to hand it in.
