Monty Robert was a young man who was the son of a horse trainer who would go from stable to stable, race track to race track, farm to farm and ranch to ranch, training horses. As a result, the boy’s high school career was continually interrupted. When he was a senior, he was asked to write a paper about his dream about what he wanted to be ad do when he grew up.

That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch, showing the location of all the buildings, the stables and the tracks. Then he drew a detailed floor plan for a 4,000-square-foot house that would sit on a 200-acre dream ranch.

He put a great deal of his heart into the project and the next day he handed it in to his teacher, Mrs. Smith. Two days later he received his paper back. On the front page was a large red A with encouraging words, “A fantastic dream! Work hard to achieve it!”

Monty Robert went home happily with the dream and couldn’t wait to share it with his father. But to his great sadness, his father said, “This is an unrealistic dream, my boy. I am just a horse trainer, earning just enough to feed a family. We have no money. We have no resources. Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. You have to buy the lad. You have to pay for the original breeding stock and later you will have to pay other fees. There is no way you could ever do it.”

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Gramma Goodie visits her grandkids every Sunday afternoon. Every visit starts the same. First she rings the doorbell. Then Chris bounces down the stairs. Jamie runs to open the door. And every time, Gramma Goodie has gifts. But the kids never know what she'll bring.

Sometimes it's stuff you need, like socks or underwear. It could be a kite or a stuffed baby kangaroo. It could be a lollipop that turns your tongue bright blue.

Well, one Sunday, Gramma rang the doorbell. Chris hurried down the stairs. And Jamie threw open the door.

“Hello, my darlings,” Gramma Goodie said with a smile. “Look what I have for you” She pulled out a deck of cards, and they played “Go Fish” all afternoon. At the end of the day, Gramma gave everyone kisses. Then she said her good-byes.

As she drove away, Chris and Jamie heard their parents talking. They said that Gramma Goodie's birthday was next Sunday. They were going to plan a special dinner and bake a delicious cake for her birthday surprise.

“Gramma Goodie has a birthday?” they thought. Both were a little confused. Grown-ups have birthdays? Who in the world knew? “Well, we have to get her a gift,” Jamie decided. “But what?” asked Chris. “Gramma Goodie has absolutely EVERYTHING!”

Jamie thought about scarves, flowers, and perfume. But Gramma had plenty of scarves, a humongous rose garden, and bottles of French perfume. Chris thought about books, pillows, and a flute.

A diary? She had one. An umbrella? She had that, too. A radio? There's one in her kitchen. Oh, what would Chris and Jamie do? They spent all week thinking. They thought in math class. They daydreamed during recess. They thought themselves to sleep! Nothing came to mind.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

There was a country house in a beautiful valley. It was very big, beautiful, built with good taste, and full of details.

The owner was a well-off landowner called John. He was a person who had a good heart, loved animals, and he liked going hunting. He used to capture different living birds and put them into cages. He liked to see the animals closed up, to take care of them and to protect them. Before being captured, these wild animals lived in the valley.

John had a 15-year-old son called Josh. He also liked animals and birds, but unlike his father, he didn’t like the way his father kept them inside cages, without being able to fly around. Josh liked them to be free, in their natural environment. Sometimes, when his father wasn’t around, Josh freed some of the animals as he could not bear to see them suffering in the cages, even if they were quite comfortable.

His father used to capture gazelles, cats, zebras, leopards, eagles, owls and many others and he never noticed that some of the cages were open and empty. Then one day, he did.

As John knew his son’s wish was to see the animals freed, he knew that it was him. Josh decided to leave the country house without telling his dad.

After some days, his father became worried, because Josh wasn’t back. He even started to cry, thinking that his son had left him forever. Josh was his only child, and John loved him more than anything, more than the animals, as this was just a hobby to occupy himself.

John asked some of the workers in the house to go out and look for his son. They finally found him after a long time of searching. He was in another country house with a friend.

John’s workers told Josh his father’s desires, begging him to come back and saying that he could do what he wanted with the animals and the cages, if only he would come back home.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

After spending far too much time on apps and social media over the last few years, I decided it was time for a change. I'd started to get really frustrated with how I was spending my spare time. One day, when I realized I'd checked my phone over 100 times, I knew something had to give.

So, I deleted my social media apps from my phone and made a promise to myself to do something more positive with my time.

I'm embarrassed to admit that I'd stopped reading as much over the last couple of years. At first, it wasn't easy for me to find things to do. But then a friend sent a magazine Readly to me. I'd always loved reading magazines and thought it was time to give them a go again.

The selection of Readly is amazing: food, fitness, lifestyle, sports, culture and hobbies are all covered. I've been reading it in the evenings to relax instead of watching TV. I've also found it great for inspiration and ideas for new recipes(食谱)in the food section. I have been on a diet to lose some weight, so the fitness section has been really helpful, too. Having so many meaningful things to read is just fantastic. I can't think how much I would have had to spend to get all that content.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

I've also shared Readly with my husband who loves sports section.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文,续写的词数应为150左右。

When I was ten years old, I lived with my family in a small house in rural South Jersey. I often accompanied my mother to the A&P to buy groceries. Without a car, we walked, and I would help her carry the bags.

My mother had to shop every carefully, as she was a waitress, and her salary barely sustained (勉强维持) us. One day, while she was weighing prices, a promotional display for the World Book Encyclopedia (百科全书) caught my eye. The volumes were beautifully cream-colored. Volume I was ninety-nine cents with a ten-dollar purchase.

All I could think of while shopping was the book. I stood at the register (收银台) with my mother, holding my breath as the cashier rang up the items. It came to over eleven dollars. My mother produced a five, some singles, and a handful of change. As she was counting out the money, I somehow found the courage to ask for the encyclopedia. “Could we get one?” I said, showing her the display. “It’s only ninety-nine cents.”

I did not understand my mother’s increasing anxiety; she did not have enough change and had to sacrifice a large can of peas to pay the amount, “Not now, Patricia,” she said sternly. “Today is not a good day.” I packed the groceries and followed her home, upset.

The next Saturday. my mother gave me a dollar and sent me to the A&P alone. Two quarts of milk and a loaf of bread — that’s what a dollar in 1957. I went straight to the World Book display. There was only one first volume left, which I placed in my cart (购物车). I didn’t need a cart, but took one so I could read as I went up and down the aisles. A lot of time went by and I knew I had to leave, but I couldn’t bear to part with the book. With no detective in sight, I, impulsively (冲动地), put it inside my shirt and zipped (扣上拉链) up my jacket. I was a tall, skinny kid, and I am certain the shape of the book was obvious.

Paragraph1:

My heart beating rapidly, I headed for the register.

Back home, I told my mother what I had promised the detective.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Peter, a 5-year-old boy, showed such great interest in sea shells that he would rush to pick them up with his 3-year-old sister, Shirley. They screamed out their joy as Peter collected his treasure into his pockets. For Peter, sea shells lay shinning on the peaceful beach, waiting for him, just like stars twinkling(闪烁)in the sky. As waves touched them, they seemed to be flowers blooming(绽放)in gentle wind.

One day, Peter was wandering through market with Shirley, with some shells in his pocket. Suddenly Peter found his younger sister was lagging(落后)behind. He stopped and looked back, finding Shirley was standing in front of a toy shop and was staring at something with great interest.

The boy went back to her and asked, "What do you want?" Shirley pointed at the doll, wearing a smile on her innocent face. Peter held his younger sister's tiny hand, walking into the shop. He tiptoed(踮起脚尖)to reach for the doll, and like a responsible elder brother, gave the precious doll to Shirley. Holding tightly the doll, the sister was very very happy.

The shopkeeper was watching everything and getting amused to see the matured(成熟的)behaviour of the boy. Now the boy came to the counter and asked the shopkeeper, "How much does this doll cost, Sir?”

The shopkeeper was a cool man, who had suffered from something in his life. So he asked the boy with love and affection, "Well, what can you pay?" Peter reached into his clothes for money that was intended for these two little guys' breakfast. Having counted the money, Peter put it carefully on the counter, asking again, 6'Sir, is it enough for my little sister's doll?"

The amusing scene just in front of the shopkeeper eventually brought a smile on his face. Shaking his head slightly, he replied, "My boy, I am afraid it seems not to be enough."

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段内容,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数为150左右。

“What’s wrong with you, dear?” said Granny Bell to a little boy, who sat near a wall at the back of the house. He had a book in his hand, and tears were in his eyes.

“We have all got a poem called Little Jim to learn,” said the boy, whose name was Tom Blair, “and the on who says it best is to get a prize form the teacher. But I don’t think I can learn it.”

“Why not?” said Granny Bell.

“The boys say the I can’t, and that I need not try,” said Tom in a sad tone.

“Don’t mind what the boys say. Let them see that you can learn it,” said Granny Bell.

“But I don’t think I can,” said Tom, “it is so long, and some of the words are so hard. I know I need not try for the prize. But I would like to learn the poem as well as I can, for the boys laugh at me, and call me ‘Slow Tom’.”

“Well, dear,” said Granny Bell, in a kind voice, “if you are slow, and can’t help it, try to be ‘slow and sure’ as they say. Look at the snail on the wall. How slow it is! And yet, if you watch it ,you can see it will get to the top in time. So just try to learn a few lines each day, and you may gain the prize in the end. And when you feel like losing heart, think of the snail on the wall.”

When Granny Bell had said this, she went on her way. And Tom thought that, though he could not keep up with the boys, he might run a race with the snail. So he determined to try to learn his task by the time the snail got to the top of the wall.

Paragraph 1:

At last, the day came on which the teacher was to give prize, and after he called upon five or six boys to recite the poem, it came to Tom’s turn.

Paragraph 2:
