文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文,主要讲的是作者和室友Kate之间虽然并不总是意见一致,但却最终学会了让步,清理和坚持的故事。

1 . I was never very neat, while my roommate Kate was extremely organized. Each of her objects had its place, but mine always hid somewhere. She even labeled (给贴标签) everything. I always looked for everything. Over time, Kate got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. So we both got tired of each other.

War broke out one evening. Kate came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming, “Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!” Deafened,I saw my shoes flying at me.I jumped to my feet and started yelling (叫喊). She yelled back louder.

The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone call. Kate answered it. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled (爬行) under her covers (被子), sobbing (哭啼). Obviously, that was something she should not go through alone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy rose up in my heart. Slowly, I collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side. I got so into my work that I even didn’t notice Kate had sat up. She was watching, her tears dried and her expression was such disbelief. Then, she reached out her hands to grasp mine. I looked up into her eyes. She smiled at me, “Thanks.”

Kate and I stayed roommates for the rest of the year. We didn’t always agree, but we learned the meaning of living together: giving in, cleaning up and holding on.

文章大意:本文为说明文。地景艺术开始于数千年之前,它与传统的艺术不同,主要使用泥土、石块等材料在户外制作艺术品。

4 . Land Art, sometimes referred to as Earth Art or Earthworks, is a form of art which involves using physical landscapes to create art, taking art out of the museum and into the outside world. Modern Land Art movement really got going in the1960s, when American artists began creating Land Art on a large scale (大规模地). Today, works of modern Land Art can be seen all over the world, sometimes right alongside much older pieces of Land Art created by people who lived thousands of years ago.

Land Art , which is not necessarily unchangeable, can take a number of forms. For example, in 1970 Robert Smithson created the Spiral Jetty (螺旋状防波堤), made of a collection of stones and mud, in the Great Salt Lake. The American artist made a large jetty in a spiral shape which sticks out into the waters of the lake.

Reshaping the landscapes is a common characteristic of Land Art, which can be created by moving parts around. People can also add things to the environment to create Land Art, like salt , which s added to the Spiral Jetty. It is possible to use plants. In all case , Land Art is immovable.

Land Art is designed to gradually form, change, and eventually decay (衰落). That’s one of the biggest differences between Land Art and most of the art one sees in the museums. Some works of art can exist only for a few hours or days. Others are exposed to rain and wind so that they develop and decay over time, which is part of the attractiveness in the eyes of the artists.

A.Land Art was the most popular art in the 1960s.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述闲聊的作用。

5 . Small talk. Chitchat. These are the short conversations we have at parties, while we wait in line at the store, at family events or work.     1     Often we have to make small talk with complete strangers.

Many people find these small conversations about random topics difficult. Some people say they hate it.     2    They may even call it idle chitchat or idle chatter, meaning it doesn't do anything. They consider small talk not important.

3     These exchanges can open doors that may lead to larger, more meaningful conversations. When you first meet someone or talk to someone you don't know well, it would be awkward to begin a conversation about a really deep topic such as war, politics or the meaning of life. Small talk also gives you the chance to decide if you want to know that person better-or not. Let's say you make small talk with someone at a party.     4    You may not want to build a friendship with them unless you really, really love cats.

Chitchat can also increase your feeling of understanding, or empathy, toward people you know but not well. Chatting with a colleague about their child may help you to understand more of their life outside the office.     5

A.However, small talk is important.
B.And small talk may make us happier.
C.But they only want to talk about cats.
D.Others say small talk is a waste of time.
E.This could help build healthy work relationships.
F.However, some people are not good at small talk.
G.Sometimes we make small talk with people we already know but not well.

7 . It's not possible to stay together with loved ones all the time. Sometimes family members have to be far away from each other. During that time, they might face something terrible. Although we know what they are suffering, being far away makes it harder to help and comfort (安慰)loved ones. There is no use worrying a lot about them. Instead, keeping a positive attitude of support is more helpful than getting into worrying about the person. I think it is what I can do to help my loved ones.

My daughter has been working full-time during summer about 10 hours a day. She has to study hard for a big entrance exam. At first, like most people, I wanted to try to solve the problems and analyse (分析)the situation. Was there a better way of time management? Was there a better way of studying for this test? However, that was not always helpful. Sometimes, it even gave more pressure to her. Sometimes it might sound like there was something wrong to improve. However, it was just tiring at the end of the day. What would be the kind thing to do in this situation? It was hard to read someone's mind. I decided to just chat with her online and to send a hug emoji (表情符号)this time. It seemed more suitable than talking about solutions. Giving space can also be an act of help, comfort and kindness.

It is a fun and meaningful experiment to actively think about kind things to do rather than let it happen naturally. I've realized it and I'm grateful for this chance to share online. Give it a try too and you'll enjoy sweetness.

8 . It seems we're always being told to get more sleep. Studies suggest spending less time on sleep can lead to obesity(肥胖) and even cancer. You might even find yourself with a head full of false memories. But rarely does science explore the dark side of sleeping too much. That's because few of us in today's busy world have the luck of exploring that option.

In an August 2018 study, published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, researchers researched the sleep patterns of those“fortunate”few and found they may not be so lucky after all. In fact, they found people who get more than eight hours of sleep have greater health risk compared to those who sleep together less than seven hours. What's more, sleep-aholics-those who manage to get 10 hours a night-stand a 30 percent higher chance of dying compared to the seven-hour crowd.

The wide-ranging global study involved(涉及) more than three million people who self-reported on their sleep habits and came to an eye-opening conclusion: If you tend to sleep a lot, you may want to buy an alarm clock. As with all things in life, sleep is best taken in moderation(适度).

You may be thinking: What if I only sleep in on Saturday and Sunday, am I still at risk? The answer is yes, according to a 2019 study published in Current Biology.   Researchers discovered that even if a person sleeps more   than seven hours on the weekends but still sleeps less than that on weeknights, they are at risk of gaining weight   and developing sensitivity to insulin, which controls the level of sugar in blood.

For the study, 36 participants were divided into three groups that each had a different sleep schedule: nine   hours every night, five hours every night, and five hours from Monday to Friday and sleeping much on   weekends. People who get too much sleep tend to feel tired and lack energy. Also, both sleep-deprived(睡眠不足的) groups consume more food and gain weight.

1. Why is the harmful effect of sleeping too much seldom studied?
A.Few people have time to sleep too much.B.Lack of sleep causes much more harm.
C.It turns out to be a healthy sleep pattern.D.People's health has nothing to do with it.
2. What does the underlined words "those 'fortunate' few" in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Those leading a relaxing life.B.Those getting too much sleep.
C.Those with less time to sleep.D.Those with no sleep problems.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。科学家想方设法保存地球上存在的冰块,并计划在南极洲建立一个地下室储存冰块。文章介绍了科学家要储存冰块的原因和目的。

9 . Where do you keep ice? In die freezer, of course. That’s what scientists might have thought when they were looking for a safe place to store ice from mountain glaciers from around the world. They’ve decided to store ice in Antarctica because global warming is causing some of the glaciers in places like the Alps to melt.

Jerome Chappellaz of the French National Centre for Scientific Research is involved in creating an ice vault (地下室) there. He says: “We are probably the only scientific community whose sample (样本) is in danger of disappearing from the face of the planet. If you work on rocks or on tree rings, the raw material is still here and will be for many centuries.”

And why do scientists need to study ice from the Alps, for example? Ice formed on the top of a mountain is made of snow accumulated over thousands of years. Trapped air bubbles (气泡) contain samples of the atmosphere that existed when that ice was formed. Ice is a record of climate. By examining ice, we know carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is higher now than in the last three million years. Researchers use this kind of data to build computer models and try to predict what might happen in the future.

The ice vault will be housed in a snow cave at the Concordia Research Station, which is operated by scientists from France and Italy. The ice samples will be sealed in bags and placed 10 meters below the surface. at a constant temperature of -50℃. This will put the scientists’ minds at rest. Losing the ice samples would be a disaster, and nobody wants to see a mine of scientific knowledge lost forever in a giant pool.

1. What makes Antarctica a safe place to store ice?
A.Its large mountains.
B.Its function as a freezer.
C.The abundant ice samples there.
D.The absence of global warming.
2. Jerome compares ice with rocks and tree rings to state that_     .
A.it’s necessary to store ice
B.it’s more valuable to study ice
C.ice disappears very quickly
D.ice should be stored at home
3. What is the researchers’ purpose of studying ice?
A.To learn about climate.
B.To learn about the Alps.
C.To trap air bubbles.
D.To reduce carbon dioxide.
4. What do scientists think of storing ice in Antarctica?
A.They consider it an easy job.
B.They’re not optimistic about it.
C.They think it will cause disasters.
D.They think it’s a reliable way.
