2 . At 12, my father decided to take me on a trip to France. I had never been out of the country before, so I was very excited. My aunt, my father and I went around with my father showing us all the unbelievable sites in Paris. None of us spoke much French but we loved the city.

We had taken the subway all over the city and were congratulating ourselves on our mastering what is honestly an excellent subway design that is pretty easy to follow. We decided to visit Versailles by train. We chatted happily along the way until my father realized we were far into the French countryside and no one around spoke English.

We reached the end of the line and felt afraid when everyone finally left the train. An old man and his grandchild noticed us and came to help. He spoke no English, so in broken French we tried to explain. When he finally understood, this great man settled his grandson and showed us to the correct train and then boarded with us.

Later we knew the truth that there was a train transfer (转乘) and he didn’t want us to miss it. This kind man rode a train for an hour and a half out of his way to make sure that three Americans got where they wanted to be. He refused to let us pay for his ticket. He did it all with a gentle smile and patted our hands gently at the stop. Then in his quiet way, he boarded the train to return the way he had come.

What impressed me most was the man and his kindness during the amazing trip. Some Americans think the French are rude for some reason, but I always try to persuade them to change their minds with this very story.

1. What happened to the author and his family on the train?
A.They couldn’t understand the signs of the train.
B.They failed to get off the train at the right time.
C.They had different opinions about where to go first.
D.They found it hard to communicate with the French.
2. How did the man help the author and his family?
A.He paid for their train tickets.B.He showed them the returning way.
C.He invited them to travel together.D.He led them to their place.
3. Which of the following can best describe the last paragraph?
A.Seeing is believing.B.Being kind is a good manner.
C.Travelling enriches one’s life.D.Helping others brings great pleasure.
4. What’s the purpose of the author’s writing the text?
A.To explain an unexpected problem.
B.To list the unbelievable sites in Paris.
C.To share an unforgettable foreign experience.
D.To show the importance of mastering a foreign language.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。介绍了中国古老的“食补”习俗。

3 . Chinese cuisine is widely known and enjoyed all around the world. Who doesn’t long for a favorite Chinese dish? But there is one interesting concept concerning Chinese food which is almost unheard of in the West, and which is becoming increasingly ignored by the youth of the East—the ancient custom of “tonic food”.

Tonic food is food which is consumed to improve one’s well-being or avoid sickness. For instance, it was once the custom for new mothers to eat a sesame oil(麻油) chicken soup every day for the first month after giving birth. It was believed that this dish would benefit the muscles, reduce pain, improve circulation, stimulate sweating, and warm the body. Some foods, such as goat meat and spinach, are seen as “hot”, while others, such as Chinese cabbage and radishes, are seen as “cold”. One should be careful not to eat too much of either “hot” or “cold” food. However, how much “hot” or “cold” food one should eat depends on the time of the year, how the food is prepared and what it is prepared with, and the individual’s health.

The custom of employing tonic food for a healthier life also influences the catering industry. Chinese herbal medicines, such as wolfberry(枸杞子), can be found on many a restaurant menu, either added to fruit tea or as a beneficial addition to a dish. These herbs attract customers, such as overworked office staff, in need of a modest pick-me-up.

So, whether you need to boost your strength with a large helping of chicken soup, or increase your mental powers with a serving of fish soup, you may find that this ancient Chinese custom could be just the tonic you were looking for.

1. What is the present situation of tonic food?
A.It is catching less attention.B.It is enjoyed by many young people.
C.It is well-known worldwide.D.It is becoming increasingly popular.
2. What is believed to benefit new mothers?
A.Chinese cabbage.B.Fruit tea.
C.Sesame oil chicken soup.D.Fish soup.
3. Which of the following best explains “catering” underlined in Paragraph 3?
A.Medicine.B.Restaurant.C.Manufacture.D.Agriculture.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Charm of Chinese CuisineB.The Popularity of Tonic Food
C.An Introduction of Chinese Tonic FoodD.Differences Between “Hot” Food and “Cold” Food

7 . Thinking is something you choose to do as a fish chooses to live in water. To be human is to think. But thinking may come naturally without your knowing how you do it. Thinking about thinking is the key to critical thinking. When you think critically, you take control of your thinking processes. Otherwise, you might be controlled by the ideas of others. Indeed, critical thinking is at the heart of education.

The word “critical” here has a special meaning. It does not mean taking one against another view, as when someone criticizes another person for doing something wrong. The nature of critical thinking is thinking beyond the easily seen-beyond the pictures on TV, the untrue reports in the newspapers, and the faulty reasoning.

Critical thinking is an attitude as much as an activity. If you are curious about life and desire to dig deeper into it, you are a critical thinker. If you find pleasure in deep thinking about different ideas, characters, and facts, you are a critical thinker.

Activities of the mind and higher-order reasoning are processes of deep and careful consideration. They take time, and do not go hand in hand with the fast speed in today’s world: fast foods, instant coffee, and self-developing film. If you are among the people who believe that speed is a measure of intelligence, you may learn something new from a story about Albert Einstein. The first time Banesh Hoffman, a scientist, was to discuss his work with Albert Einstein, Hoffman was too nervous to speak. But Einstein immediately put Hoffman at ease by saying, “Please go slowly. I don’t understand things quickly.”

1. Critical thinking is important to us because if we do not think critically, ________.
A.it will be hard for us to think naturally and fastB.we might be controlled by other people’s ideas
C.we will follow the ideas of others naturallyD.we might be fooled by other people’s ideas
2. If you are a critical thinker, you will ________.
A.think deeply about different ideasB.trust the reports in the newspapers
C.take one view against another viewD.criticize other people for their mistakes
3. In the last paragraph, “ something new” suggests that ________.
A.the smarter you are, the faster you do thingsB.the faster you do things, the smarter you become
C.speed can improve intelligenceD.intelligence is not decided by speed
4. What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Thinking and Critical ThinkingB.Understanding Critical Thinking
C.Thinking Is Natural and HumanD.Thinking Fast Means Intelligence

Not all cultures greet each others the same way, nor are they comfortable in same way with touching or distance between people.
