With a wide smile on her face, 15-year-old Sirin eagerly rushed to her mom to show off her new painting. But Mom raised her eyebrows with eyes wide open, and spoke impatiently, “No time, baby. Right now I am busy with an important talk. Just wait for some time, OK?”
Holding her oil painting, she frowned (皱眉),and then searched for her dad. “Dad, see what I have done,” Sirin exclaimed cheerfully. Her dad turned around while adjusting his tie, grinned at her, and showed his thumbs up!
Immediately, Sirin replied angrily, “Dad, you haven’t seen it yet.”
He smiled at her saying, “No time, baby. I will see it later.” He just patted her back lovingly, kissed her forehead, and rushed for his office.
She was not a kid to be pleased with simple gesture or smile. She stood there for a few seconds, and then stormed off to her own bedroom. Hot air was blowing from her nostrils (鼻孔) ; her face turned into apple red. She threw the painting on the table, slammed the door and threw herself on her bed.
“Why is everybody so busy?” She recalled thousands of incidents that hurt her in preschool, middle school and even in high school too! She assumed at least her own family members would give some values to her thoughts, but they were no exception. Unconsciously, her eyes were filled with tears.
The knocking sound on the door put a sudden stop to her thought. Her mom was calling her for dinner. Sirin deliberately (故意地) came late to join them. She kept silent and didn’t look at anyone, scratching the table mat with her nail. Her mom was puzzled at the unusual behavior. Suddenly the morning incident came to mind. Softly, she asked, “ Honey, did I do anything wrong? ”

Seamounts are mountains, usually volcanoes, which rise up from the sea floor. Some of the volcanoes are extinct; some are still active. But they are hard to find because they do not reach the surface of the water. Scientists say seamounts cover nearly 29 million square kilometers of this planet under the sea. Marine (海洋的) life gathers at seamounts because they carry nutrient-rich water upward from the sea floor.
In September, 2016, a group of scientists set out to explore Cook Seamount which rises almost 4,000 meters from the Pacific Ocean floor about 160 kilometers off the island of Hawaii. Humans have never seen it up close before.
Three people went in a submarine (潜水艇) down to over 900 meters below the ocean surface to the top of the seamount. As the blue waters became darker, underwater creatures that chemically create their own light began to swim past the submarine. The scientists found several kinds of deep sea corals (珊瑚虫) on the seamount’s sides. These included a possible new species of coral they named “Purple Haze”.
Conservation International and the University of Hawaii worked together for the trip to Cook Seamount. Greg Stone, the lead scientist, said, “This three-day research is the start of an effort to survey seamounts throughout the Pacific Ocean over the next five years. And we hope to study a total of 50 seamounts.” He said humans have little knowledge about seamounts, but they are a “key part” of what drives the ocean. Stone said he wanted to find out what is living on the seamounts and how they support ocean life. From that, he says, we will understand ocean health, which relates directly to human health.”
M. Sanjayan is Executive Vice President of Conversation International. He said there were 10,000, maybe 100,000 seamounts across the world’s oceans and because most had not been explored, he expected they would see things new to science.
One of the other two seamounts studied on their trip was Lo’ihi, an active volcano, which has been studied over the past 30 years. The scientists saw an “old friend” on it—a shark they had seen there before. Scientists say volcanic activity of Lo’ ihi pushes the seamount upward. But do not look for it to break the surface of the water any time soon.

3 . Madrid has ordered nearly half of the private cars off the roads on Thursday to deal with the worsening air pollution, a first in Spain.
The restriction (限令) will operate between 6.30 a.m. and 9 p.m. every day. The city government said in a statement: “Vehicles with even-number registration plates (偶数牌照)will be allowed to drive around on even-number days and the rest cars on the rest days.”
The measure works when levels of harmful NO2 in the atmosphere go above 200 microgrammes in every 1 in at least two measuring stations for two days running, and if the air is unlikely to clear soon.
On Thursday, the city environment officer Ines Sabanes said the restriction would not be carried out as pollution levels had dropped by the required amount. Other measures, including a ban on street parking for non-local vehicles and reduced speed limits, will continue. There are exceptions to the restriction, such as for hybrid (混合动力的) cars, those carrying three people or more or used by disabled people. Buses, taxis and emergency vehicles are not encompassed, either. “It’s not about traffic restrictions but about the important issue of public health,” deputy mayor Marta Higueras said. “Lots of people suffer from breathing problems and are very affected by pollution.”
With 3.2 million people and 1.8 million cars, Madrid often suffers from bad pollution. The move to ban half of the cars is Level Three on a series of four measures to prevent pollution. Level Four bans taxis from the city, except those that are hybrid cars.
The previous measures carried out by the city hall draw criticism from the Popular Party(PP) which ruled Madrid for nearly a quarter of a century and governs at the national level. The PP spokesman in Madrid’s local parliament said officials should do more to encourage people to avoid using their cars rather than punish them. The previous measures were carried out by former PP leader Ana Botella just before municipal elections (市政府选举) in Many 2015.

4 . It won’t be wrong to say that the hotel industry is one of the most competitive fields, and to survive in the hotel business, restaurateurs (餐馆老板) need to have certain unique strategies. To be more specific, to excel(突出)in the business, hotel owners need to follow a few things like, keeping a few secrets from customers, telling them half the truth, and at times even lying and pretending about certain things.
Calories in a dish
In the first place, the calorie count of a particular dish is seldom mentioned on the menu, and when it’s mentioned, most times it is inaccurate. Also, the waiters are not allowed to say anything about the calories in a dish and they either lie about it or just say, “All the information about it is available online.”
Extra sugar in your kids’ meals
You may wonder why your kid wants to go to the same restaurant every time, where he once had a particular pizza. Many restaurants often apply the trick of adding extra sugar to the kids’ meals so that they love it more and insist on going to the same place again and again.
“Homemade” salad is actually ready-made
Salads often labeled as “homemade” on the menu are not homemade. Some restaurants purchase salad dressings(沙拉酱) in large quantities and then add a few ingredients like fresh herbs, blue cheese, etc., and serve them as the homemade salad.
A last tip before you go, make sure that you never ask your waiter for recommendations from the menu. Waiters will never criticize anything that they serve, and in fact, may often do the opposite. At times, they may even recommend dishes that are expensive, or dishes that are not selling well.
These are some of the things that waiters will not share with you when you go to a restaurant. While most of these should not matter, you should never go to a restaurant that does not take cleanliness and hygiene(卫生) strictly.

8 . Imagine looking at a view of mountaintops and wondering about the name of each peak. Suddenly, above each mountaintop, a name appears on the sky. The words are not written in smoke by skywriting planes. The words are actually not in the sky at all. They come from tiny computers in contact lenses(隐形眼镜)
Computers have become smaller and smaller over the decades. The first computers filled houses. Transistors(晶体管) and then chips allowed computers to become small enough to fit on a desktop, then a laptop, and finally a phone. When experimenting with further reductions in size, developers often have to deal with the limits of human eyesight, which control how small the computers can be and still present visible information.
One new solution employs microprojectors (微投影机) to create a readable display for tiny computers. These machines project computer information onto any surface. Though an impressive breakthrough, there are potential problems. Such public displays can lead to privacy concerns; Most people do not want their information displayed on a wall for everyone to see. Besides, these projectors are extremely expensive, and their screens give users headaches.
Babak Parviz, a researcher at the University of Washington, created another solution: inventing a screen visible only to a person wearing a contact lens. Parviz created a computer in a contact lens that uses the wearer's field of vision as the display. To create the display, Parviz took ordinary soft contact lenses with a wirelessly controlled system. At some point, Parviz says, it will be possible to connect the lens to a remote personal computer device such as cellphone or a laptop. By looking in a certain direction, the wearer sends the computer visual information about what he or she sees. The device then uses this information to point out the names of peaks.
These contact lenses are inserted and removed in much the same way as ordinary contact lenses. In addition, the computers in the lenses won't block the wearer's sight at all. Although now the computers are not on lenses treating eyesight problems, Parviz hopes that someday the technology will progress to that level.

9 . When Chery Hanbury stepped outside her home the morning after Hurricane Irma swept through her Bradenton, Florida, neighborhood, she expected to see a few of her neighbors out surveying the damage, too, and cleaning up debris. What she did not expect to see was an actual superhero at work.
But that's exactly what she spotted when a man in a red and blue outfit using a chainsaw to cut a tree that had fallen across her road caught her attention ''I thought, OMG! Spider-Man! '' she said. ''I was shocked. I couldn't believe what I was seeing.''
Hanbury called her family outside to see too, and her husband Alan was able to snap two pictures of the mysterious good Samaritan. "Spider-Man worked the tree, then swung off and jumped in his little black pickup with a friend and flew off " said Hanbury. ''I do not know why he was dressed as Spider-Man, nor do I know the name or identity of the masked man. ''
Hanbury's own two daughters, Ciara, 22, and Skye, 21, are grown, and most of the neighborhood withdrew before the storm, so unfortunately, no children were around to witness the Spider-Man in action. However, Hanbury said he was a welcome surprise and provided a laugh that lifted the spirits of those who experienced the scary storm. "It was a silver lining after waiting a long week for the hurricane to arrive, she said. ''People were terrified and exhausted.''
Thankfully, the hurricane wasn't as bad as it was predicted for Hanbury's area. ''We still have lots of people without power, and my neighbors' generators (发电机) are running at the moment. But for the most part, we just have high numbers of trees and power lines down with much debris, but everyone is safe! '' she said
Now that her photos are going viral(疯传), Hanbury hopes Spider-Man knows he is cheering the spirits of people in Bradenton and around the world. ''To Spider-Man, I would like to say, 'Thank you! ''' she said. ''I'm glad we have real-life heroes. ''
