My high school life has been filled with many ups and downs, whether it was social or academic.Even though my current high school was not my first choice, I never regretted attending Southside High School.“Since you have chosen it, then it is the best for you,” said my parents.

Up until the junior year I did not realize my capabilities (能力) as a student.Being in the IB Program, I was told that my junior year would be the toughest in all the years of high school. With this “little” piece of information, I walked into my junior year, scared of my grades. As weeks went by, I started to believe that the junior year was not as hard as everyone had said, but I was wrong. My grades were rapidly declining (下降) and by the end of the first term I had had five Cs in seven of my classes! I could not believe it — I did not want to believe it.I tried my best to get my grades up myself without any help from anyone, but my pride just made my grades worse. And I had to miss out on one of the most important speech and debate competitions all year:States.I was heartbroken.I realized that I could not survive my junior year on my own, so I had to get help fast.

Once I got a tutor, my grades went from Cs, Ds, and even some Fs, to nothing but As and Bs.I slowly started to gain my confidence back in all of my classes and even myself.By the time the third and fourth quarter came around, I had been on the honor roll twice, and I was receiving awards from speeches and debates, tennis and school.

Southside has taught me to always keep my head up and never give up on myself no matter what life throws at me.I am proud to be a Southside Tiger.

文章大意:这是一篇议论文。本文主要讲述了关于青少年使用社交媒体与其抑郁症之间因果关系的一些研究调查,强调了其间因果关系的复杂性。

6 . Is there a link between social media and depression? Do Facebook and Instagram have a negative impact on your mental health? It’s complicated.

Sometimes, looking through Instagram just makes you feel bad. You try not to envy your friends, but they always seem to be traveling somewhere cool, eating something fancy, or looking cute in perfect just-rolled-out-of-bed hair. On the other hand, there are times when you laugh at funny memes (表情包), catch up with old friends, and feel happy to belong to fun social media communities. Clearly, social media isn’t all bad.

People are increasingly suspecting that there’re potential problems of social media. Things like cyberbullying (网上欺凌) , screen addiction, and being exposed to endless filtered images (美颜) that make it impossible not to make comparisons between yourself and others often make the news. In July, a big study came out in the journal JAMA titled “Association of Screen Time and Depression in Adolescence.” This big headline seems to confirm what a lot of people have been saying — screen time is horrible for young people.

The study followed over 3,800 adolescents over four years as part of a drug and alcohol prevention program. Part of what the investigators measured was the teens’ amount of screen time, including time spent on social media, as well as their levels of depression symptoms. One of their main findings was that higher amounts of social media use were associated with higher levels of depression. That was true both when the researches compared between people and compared each person against their own mental health over time.

Case closed? Not so fast. Before we end the debate once and for all, let’s take a closer look at this and other studies. Let’s ask ourselves: what exactly is the relationship between social media use and depression? It turns out there are several warnings.

1. Why do people sometimes feel bad when looking through Instagram?
A.They lack contact with old friends.B.They can travel nowhere.
C.They don’t look perfect.D.They feel unbalanced.
2. Why is the article in journal JAMA mentioned?
A.To comment.B.To prove.C.To suggest.D.To explore.
3. Which may agree with the findings of the study?
A.Depression is related to social media use.
B.Teens’ amount of screen time is limited.
C.It is not easy to tell reasons for depression.
D.Social media contributes to physical health.
4. What’s the best title of the text?
A.How to reduce depression?B.Does social media cause depression?
C.Shall people reduce screen time?D.Why is it time to give up social media?

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍在紧张的时间里做好烹饪的三个小技巧。

8 . Advice for Cooking on a Tight Schedule

From my experience, there are three main reasons why people don’t cook more often: ability, money, and time.

1    Money is a topic that I’ll talk about another day. So today I want to give you some advice about how to make the most of the time in the kitchen. Here are three tips for great cooking on a tight schedule:

Think ahead. I usually think cooking is a pain when I’m already hungry and there is nothing ready to eat. So think ahead of the coming week. When will you have time to cook? Do you have the right materials already?    2

Make your time worth it. When you do find time to cook a meal, make the most of it and save yourself time later on. Are you making one loaf of bread?    3    It takes around the same amount of time to make more of something. So save yourself the effort for a future meal.

4    This may surprise you, but one of the best ways to make cooking worth your time is experimentation. It gives you the chance to hit upon new ideas and recipes that can work well. The more you learn and the more you try, the more ability you have to take control of your food and your schedule.

Hopefully that gives you a good start.    5    And don’t let a busy schedule disappoint you and stop you from making some great changes in your life!

A.Try new things.
B.Ability is easily improved.
C.Make three or four instead.
D.Understand your food better.
E.Cooking is a burden for many people.
F.Let cooking and living simply be a joy rather than a burden.
G.A little time planning ahead can save a lot of work later on.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了高中新生入学时所面临的一些问题并给出了合理的建议,同时本文还介绍了高中与初中的差异。

9 . You may not know a lot of people when you start senior high school. Maybe your friends from junior high school are going to a different senior high school. Even if you know other freshmen (一年级学生), you still feel jittery that you don’t know any upperclassmen. How are you going to make friends among this sea of unknown faces?

Most senior high schools hold the freshman orientation (迎新会) before school actually starts. It is helpful because you not only learn your way around the building but also get to meet some of your teachers and fellow freshmen. That way, when you show up on your first day of school, you may already recognize a few familiar faces.

When you talk to people at orientation, you’ll probably find that a lot of them are feeling just like you are. They’re all new to the school and don’t know what to expect. Talking about a common concern with your classmates can help you develop friendships.

The work in senior high school is something freshmen are probably worried about. It builds on what you learned in junior high school, giving you a more advanced (高深的) knowledge of many subjects. So you may find you have more work to do or that it’s a bit more challenging. If you ever find your work too difficult, teachers can give you extra help.

Senior high school also has more after-school activities than junior high school, such as clubs, music and theater groups and sports teams. This is a good time to explore your interests and try new things.

Junior high school taught you the basics of time management and social skills while providing you with a little extra support and guidance. Senior high school gives you the chance to learn how to be more independent and responsible.

1. What does the underlined word “jittery” mean in Paragraph 1?
A.Proud.B.Confident.C.Anxious.D.Bored.
2. What are freshmen probably worried about?
A.The learning task.B.The freshman orientation.
C.The ability to make friends.D.The relationship with teachers.
3. What do after-school activities mainly help students to do?
A.Develop friendships.B.Develop their interests.
C.Build up their strength.D.Improve their learning ability.
4. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.What you learned in junior high school.
B.The importance of being more independent.
C.How to improve yourself in senior high school.
D.The difference between junior high school and senior high school.

文章大意:本文是一篇应用文。文章介绍了刚刚步入高中的学生如何尽快适应高中的学习生活。

10 . Are you worried about moving up to Senior High school? It can be a new experience, but you shouldn’t worry. We’ve put together a guide on how to survive the first week.

You’re not alone!

Remember everybody else in your year is on the same boat. They may not realize it, but they’re just as nervous as you are. Moving to Senior High school is an opportunity, not a problem. Things are different and all you need to do is be polite and learn the new rules.

Teachers are ready to help!

If you’re unsure what to do or are worried about anything then you had better ask for help. Teachers are probably the best people to turn to as they’re experienced in helping new students. Some Senior High schools also have a “friends system”. If your school has this, then you will be paired with an older student. They will look out for you and help you if you have any problems or questions.

All change

There are lots of differences between Junior High school and Senior High school. You’ll have a homework diary or a student planner. You will have your lessons with different teachers in different rooms. You will have homework for different subjects on different days, so make sure you get organized. Make sure you have a copy of your school timetable written down so you know which rooms your classes are in and on which days you will have your different subjects.

Other points

If you’ve got an elder brother or sister at the school then ask them for advice.

Be yourself! It sounds simple, but people will know you much better if you just act naturally.

Having early nights makes a difference and you’ll find it easier to get up in the morning!

1. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined sentence?
A.Other students have similar feelings to yours.
B.Other students have to learn boating with you.
C.Other students will help you solve your problems.
D.Other students will teach you politeness and new rules.
2. The new students turn to teachers first when having problems because_______.
A.teachers won’t blame them as parents do
B.teachers are good at helping solve problems
C.teachers are equal to every student
D.parents are too busy to help them
3. What’s the purpose of the passage?
A.To tell students the importance of learning.
B.To warn students not to ignore friendship in Senior High school.
C.To make a difference when moving up to Senior High school.
D.To help new students to get used to the life in Senior High school.
