When I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus. Finally, there was only one family between us and the ticket counter.
This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of twelve. Their clothes were not expensive but very clean. They were well behaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly talking about the clowns, elephants and other acts they would see that night in low voices.
One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be a highlight of their young lives. A father and mother were at the head of the line, standing hand in hand.
The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded, “Please let me buy eight children’s tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus.”
The ticket lady gave the price. The man’s wife let go of his hand, her head dropped and the man’s lips began to shake. The man leaned a little closer and asked, “ how much did you say?”
The ticket lady again gave the price. Obviously the man didn’t have enough money. How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight children that he didn’t have enough money to take them all to the circus?
Actually we were not wealthy in any sense. I felt sorry for them.

4 . Sharon, Aged 22
The most important thing to keep in mind when going into high school is to be yourself. Besides, I don’t know what your middle school was like, but high school teachers will not care about things such as how much homework you already have in one night. It’s best to just learn to deal with things and manage your time wisely so you can achieve everything you need.
Frank, Aged 21
I think almost every kid feels both nervous and excited before their first day. You will probably love it. I know I did. You should join in some sports or activities that will make your high school experience more enjoyable. Good luck!
Eddie, Aged 20
When I started high school I was really nervous too, especially since I had been home-schooled all through middle school and didn’t really know anyone, I suppose the best advice would be to just relax. The first couple of days can be a little bit hard, but things will become easier after you know it.
David, Aged 19
I’m not going to lie. The first day is kind of frightening. But you’ll get used to it. Don’t be afraid of anyone; upperclassmen will pick on you more if you let them know you’re afraid. Just take it easy. Making some friends and staying with them will greatly help you get used to high school quickly. After the first week it’s really not bad at all. Don’t worry.

During a vacation one year, my mom and I left our home. We went on a two-week trip to the countryside where my mother had grown up. I was excited because I couldn’t wait to see my grandparents. The last time I had visited them was when I was only three years old. I also wished to go sightseeing, ride elephants, and do many more things there. They must be very wonderful.
With great wishes, we arrived at my grandparents’ house in the countryside. During the first several days, I stayed in their house for fun. But soon, I got bored. I wondered what adventures were in store for me. One morning I said to my mom, “I really want to go outside to play.” My mom replied, “Stephanie, today we’re going to a school. The children there are studying in poor conditions. I decided to use some of my own money to buy some school supplies (日用品) for them.” Hearing that, I was a bit unhappy. “We can go out and play another day. Today we need to spend a little time helping these poor children,” Mom added. I had no choice but to agree.
A few minutes later, my mom drove me to the school. On the way, she said, “We’d first visit the school to know what kind of things these children want most. Then we’ll try to buy them.” I thought to myself: what a vacation I am having! I come here to go sightseeing, not do charity (慈善)work.
When we reached the school, I just couldn’t believe my eyes. There was only one small building, which looked as if it were a hundred years old. There was no playground, no parking lot... It was so small; the school I went to back home was a million times bigger. How unlucky the children here were! We met a teacher in the school, and my mom told him the purpose of our visit. The teacher was very glad and thanked us.

8 . Many people struggle with writing in English. And it can seem like a real challenge(挑战).
Enlarge your vocabulary.
To express yourself clearly, you need a good active vocabulary. It’s not enough just being able to recognize lots of words.
Even though you don’t have to “study” grammar, your English writing will improve a lot if you work on grammar exercises. Also remember that grammar is more important when you write than when you speak because it is usually more formal and more structured.
Read as much as you can.
Write as much as possible.
One good way is by keeping a diary in English. It will make you write every day to turn writing into a routine activity. You don’t need to write many complex(复杂的)sentences at the beginning.
A.Don’t worry, though. |
B.Improve your grammar. |
C.Get someone to read what you’ve written. |
D.You can ask your teacher to help to check. |

9 . Our teenagers are lonely. A new study by Harvard’s Making Caring Common (MCC) shows just how that feeling has been common and become serious during the past year when we had to keep the social distance. One year’s online learning and life in the bedrooms rather than the classrooms or dorm rooms can make teenagers feel lonelier than before. Teenagers have been more likely to be influenced by loneliness than older adults.
Experiencing loneliness is certainly sad, but it is also perilous. Researchers found that 63% of the young were suffering from bad sleep, anxiety, and poor health during the lockdown(活动限 制 ) and that nearly a quarter had started or increased some bad habits, including smoking, drinking and staying up late to deal with their feelings.
About half of the young people in the study, who said they had felt lonely, explained that over the past weeks not one person had taken more than just a few minutes to ask how they had been lately. It made them feel they had no one who really cared about them. Their parents thought they had much free time after lessons and it seemed that they only worried whether their children could perform their schoolwork at the level they once did. They didn’t know the problem.
Sian Leah Beilock, the president of Barnard College, explains that young people depend on social media, which makes them especially weak to social media’s harms. She also suggests that fewer close friends may explain some of the feelings of loneliness. She reports that in 1985 the average American had three close friends with whom they could share important things about their lives. In 2004, that number had dropped to just two friends. And in 2019. one in five millennials(千禧一代) had no friends at all.
These levels of loneliness are heartbreaking. MCC suggests, as a nation, we first should focus on teaching the young to make meaningful connections between people and support them.

B.Parent-child communication becomes less. |

10 . One Brazilian chef(主厨), Regina Tchelly, is using traditional ways to repurpose(赋予新的用途) leftover food(吃剩的食物), feeding her community via her social project Favela Organica. Tchelly was shocked by the amount of food she saw thrown away daily in the city’s markets, because she had grown up with the knowledge of how to use every part of fruits and vegetables.
Favela Organica began as a grassroots project, with Tchelly teaching small groups of women from her community how to repurpose leftover food that they got from local markets and grow their own produce in their yards.
“It started in my house with six stay-at-home moms,”she said. “We wanted to bring a new way to the food inside our houses. It was from this that Favela Organica grew. With these six moms, it became ten; then it became fifteen; then it was fifty, and then the world welcomed the project.” Later, she expanded(扩展) her offerings to courses such as urban gardening and so on.
But the benefits (益处) of Tchelly’s courses go beyond helping the environment. From her free courses for the locals, people learn tips on using food waste that help them save money on their bills. One of Tchelly’s students, Ivonides Silva uses the skills she learned to start a small baking business. She sells some cakes, earning about $42 a month. The extra income from the project is a huge boost to her family. “Tchelly gives us the tools to create a small business to make some money, which changes our life greatly,” Silva said.
With no signs of slowing down, Favela Organica continues to develop from the ground up. The good environmental and social influences of Tchelly’s project set the stage for a healthier future for all.
