文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述两个小男孩为了观看冰上的鸟,在结冰的池塘上行走,结果掉入水中,被无畏的邻居及时救起的故事。

1 . A quick walk onto a frozen pond (池塘) could have been a disaster for these two boys.

Cruz Genet, 11, and Anthony Skopick, 10, couldn’t agree more. Were the birds out on the ice ducks or geese? There was only one way to find out. So on a cold January evening last year, the two friends walked onto the frozen pond near their homes to get a better look.

First, they threw a rock onto the ice to test it. Believing the ice would hold their weight, Anthony took a few steps, and then he crashed through the seemingly frozen surface. “There was no sound and no crack”, he told the reporter. “I just fell through immediately.”

Cruz rushed to help his frightened friend. And he fell in the pond, too. Cruz managed to lift himself out of the water and onto a harder part. He then carefully worked his way toward Anthony, but he fell in the pond again. This time, he couldn’t get out.

The two boys were in icy cold water and quickly losing feeling in their limbs (四肢). Cruz was sure that he was going to die.

Anthony’s older sister had seen the boys fall through the ice and started shouting for help. John Lavin, a neighbor driving nearby on his way to the store, heard her. He quickly pulled over. Seeing the boys, he took a nearby buoy (浮标), kicked off his shoes, and ran into the water. Lavin made his way to Cruz and Anthony and drew them back to land. They were taken to hospital, where doctors discovered that their five-minute stay in the water had lowered their body temperature nearly ten degrees.

Luckily, the boys have fully recovered, though they are still a little awestruck (敬畏的) by their fearless neighbor. “Just to think,” says Cruz, “if he hadn’t been there, I could have died.”

文章大意:这是一篇说明文,作者旨在给读者就如何写作业提出了建议。

2 . How to deal with your homework

Write it down.     1     Always be sure to write down all the homework so you won’t forget anything.

Create a homework station. Find somewhere comfortable and quiet to do your homework.     2     It will take twice as long to get the homework done. Shut off your cell phone, log off (退出) your computer (unless you need it for your homework) and close the door.

Do homework as early as possible. Don’t leave homework to the last minute.     3     The earlier you start your homework, the sooner you will finish! Do all your homework as early as you can, so you don’t have a pile of ( 一 堆 ) homework the next day.

4     Think about how long it will take you to complete homework for each subject. For example: English-ten minutes, science-ten minutes, math-forty minutes, history-twenty minutes.

Treat yourself. You can easily get tired by sitting through an hour or two of homework without stopping. Once you finish homework for a subject, take a small break (no more than 15 minutes). Either taking a walk or finding something to eat will do. But do not turn on the TV, or you’ll never go back to your study.     5

A.Use your time wisely.
B.Start as soon as you get home.
C.Start with your hardest homework.
D.Do not burn the midnight oil, either.
E.Never do your homework in front of the TV.
F.After short breaks, return to finish the rest of your homework.
G.Keep a homework notebook where you record all your homework.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了家庭环境可能会影响人们的身材体型,人们可以通过调整光线,颜色,声音和餐盘尺寸来把家庭环境变成饮食计划的一部分。

6 . Did you know that your weight gain might be less about your willpower and more about how you’ve decorated your home? Factors like the colors of your walls, how you store your food, or whether your bedroom is comfortable enough can all contribute to your eating habits. In short, your house may be making you fat. You can make your environment work for you instead of against you. Here are some ways to turn your home into part of your diet plan.

Open the curtains and turn up the lights. Dark environments are more likely to encourage overeating, for people are often less selfconscious (难为情) when they’re in poorly lit places—and so more likely to eat lots of food. If your home doesn’t have enough window light, get more lamps and flood the place with brightness.

Mind the colors. Research suggests warm colors fuel our appetites. In one study, people who ate meals in a blue room consumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room. Warm colors like yellow make food appear more appetizing, while cold colors make us feel less hungry. So when it’s time to repaint, go blue.

Don’t forget the clock—or the radio. People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70 fewer calories (卡路里) per meal than those who rush through their meals. Begin keeping track of the time, and try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes. And while you’re at it, actually sit down to eat. If you need some help slowing down, turn on relaxing music. It makes you less likely to rush through a meal.

Downsize the dishes. Big serving bowls and plates can easily make us fat. We eat about 22 percent more when using a 12-inch plate instead of a 10inch plate. When we choose a large spoon over a smaller one, total intake (摄入) jumps by 14 percent. And we’ll pour about 30 percent more liquid into a short, wide glass than a tall, skinny glass.

1. The text is especially helpful for those who care about _________.
A.their body shapeB.their home comforts
C.house buyingD.healthy diets
2. A home environment in blue can help people ________.
A.digest food betterB.regain their appetites
C.burn more caloriesD.reduce food intake
3. What are people advised to do at mealtimes?
A.Eat quickly.B.Play fast music.
C.Use smaller spoons.D.Turn down the lights.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Ways of Serving DinnerB.Is Your House Making You Fat?
C.Effects of SelfConsciousnessD.Is Your Home Environment Relaxing?

Adam lived with his parents in one city while his grandparents lived far away in another city. Adam’s parents usually took their son to his grandparents’ house during summer holiday every year and stayed there for around 20 days. Adam’s grandfather loved him very much and spent a lot of time playing with him. His grandmother always cooked delicious food for him. Adam loved his stay there. This continued for years. The boy grew up over time.

One day Adam said to his parents, “Now, I am old enough to go to grandparents’ house alone. So, please let me go by myself.”

His parents didn’t agree at first but Adam insisted(坚持). They finally agreed. But they were worried about his safety. So, they taught him everything he needed to know to travel alone.

The day came when Adam was to leave for his grandparents’ house. And his parents came to see him off at the train station. When the boy was comfortably seated on the train, his parents got off and waited for the train to leave.

While waiting, the father went to the window and kept talking to his son. He handed his son an envelope(信封) from the window and said, “Son, if you feel afraid on the way, open this and read it. It will help you to calm down.”

The boy kept that envelope in his pocket carefully and said goodbye to his parents. When the train was ready to leave, the boy smiled and told his father, “I remember everything. Don’t worry.”

At every station where the train stopped, people kept coming and going. The boy started feeling a little lonely.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了世界上最长的徒步旅行步道之一——阿巴拉契亚国家步道。

9 . Listen carefully. Don’t answer too quickly. At least, don’t say “yes” too soon. A friend might ask, “Want to take a hike?” You should say, “Where?” If he replies “The entire Appalachian Trail (阿巴拉契亚国家步道)”,take warning. Here’s why.

The trail is one of the longest marked footpaths in the world. It starts at Springer Mountain, Georgia. It winds (蜿蜒) along the top of the mountains. It goes through 14 states. It ends at Mount Katahdin, Maine. As the crow(乌鸦)flies, this is about 2,200 miles. But when walked, the trail is 2,600 miles. If you walk nonstop, it takes about six months to walk through the trail.

Most hikers begin from Springer Mountain. They start around April 1. This is why. The snow has probably melted (融化) in the south. But there may still be snow in the north. By the time they reach Maine, the snow will have been long gone. What’s the chance of making it nonstop? Here is the data. About 1,500 people try it each year. About 300 people make it. It is a great challenge.

Careful planning is necessary. There are problems to solve. The biggest one is the weight on one’s back. Too many hikers start out with too much. Wise ones don’t carry food. They send packages to post offices along the way. There are no campfires allowed. Some shelters are near the path. But the trail is crowded. It is hard to find space. A perfect tent is necessary. And it rains a lot. Great rain gear (用具) is needed. It should be light.

Benton MacKaye founded the trail. The first section of the trail was opened in 1923. It is cared for by volunteers in each state. Do you plan to go? Read lots of books by people who’ve done it.

1. What is the example of the crow in Paragraph 2 used to show?
A.The trail’s view.B.The trail’s height.
C.The trail’s danger.D.The trail’s distance.
2. What can we know about the Appalachian Trail?
A.Only about one fifth of the hikers succeed in hiking every year.
B.Most hikers spend a whole year hiking the trail.
C.It goes through 14 mountains in all.
D.It is about 2,200 miles long.
3. What does the author advise hikers to do?
A.Carry enough water and food.B.Wear heavy and warm clothing.
C.Bring enough maps and equipment.D.Send packages along the way ahead of time.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.Advice on hikingB.Dangers of hiking
C.Go hiking on the Appalachian TrailD.Introduction of great mountains

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了穷游成为很多人喜欢的旅游方式,穷游能够使人们更好地体验贫困生活和关心贫困问题。

10 . Nowadays more and more people like to travel, especially when vacations come. A great number of people rush out of their homes or companies to travelling spots. They either drive or take a bus, a train, a ship and so on. Some even ride bikes.

However, there is another way of travelling-poorism. People have a tour in the poorest areas of the world. Some people may take a one-day poorest tour, and some even pay to stay in very poor neighborhoods to experience the lowest living standards in the world. Poorism tours take place around the world, and not just in the third world countries. You can, for instance, tour New York neighborhoods in the Bronx, in the Bund of Shanghai. Such tours can take people into the heart of poor areas within some large and rich cities. These tours may awaken people to pay more attention to long-standing poverty, or the effects of war.

Some suggest that tours in the poor areas can raise social care. And the money from the tour can be donated to help the people there.
