3 . A new study of older adults finds too much daytime napping may signal an increasing risk of Alzheimer’s disease (阿尔茨海默病,痴呆症). Investigators from Brigham and Women’s Hospital report a relationship between daytime napping and cognitive (认知的) aging: too much daytime napping predicts an increased future risk of Alzheimer’s, and a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s speeds up the increase in daytime napping during aging.
“Daytime sleep behaviors of older adults are often ignored,” said Peng Li of the Medical Biodynamics Program in Brigham’s Division of Sleep and Circadian Disorders. “Our team calls for a closer attention to 24-hour sleep patterns not only nighttime sleep but also daytime sleep—for tracking the health of older adults.”
Researchers at the Brigham recognized that all previous studies on Alzheimer’s disease assessed napping within a participant only once, and most of them were subjective and questionnaire-based. In the new study, more than 1000 individuals, with an average age of 81, were provided Actical, a watch-like device, to wear on their wrist for up to 14 days. After napping episodes were identified, the nap duration and frequency were calculated. The results suggest that too much daytime napping may signal an increasing risk of Alzheimer’s, and that faster yearly increase in daytime napping may be a sign of worsening or unfavored clinical progression of the disease.
However, researchers acknowledge that the participants studied were older, and therefore, the findings may not be easily translated to younger people. In addition, future studies should test whether a direct intervention (介入,干预) in daytime napping can lower the risk of Alzheimer’s or cognitive decline.
“We hope to draw more attention to daytime sleep patterns and the importance of patients noting if their sleep schedule changes over time,” said co-senior author Kun Hu of the Medical Biodynamics Program. “Sleep changes are critical in shaping the internal changes in the brain.”

4 . Vaping (吸电子烟) is becoming booming these days. The basic idea behind this is simple: vaping is a way of taking in nicotine (and other substances) that is far safer than smoking, because vapes produce far lower levels of the most harmful chemicals than cigarettes, as the World Health Organization notes. But there are several obvious issues with this.
Firstly, there is enormous variability in vaping products and devices. The market is largely unregulated, which means the term “vape” covers everything from solid, reliable devices to something that will explode when you put it in your mouth.
Switching from smoking to vaping is probably good for your health, but the epidemiological (流行病学的) evidence shows that most people become what’s known as “dual users” who both vape and smoke in differing amounts. Because of their different smoking regimes (养生法,方法), the evidence on whether dual use is more beneficial than just smoking is unclear.
Vaping is obviously worse for your health than quitting completely. In an experimental study led by Prof David Thickett in the University of Birmingham, the researchers designed a mechanical procedure to mimic (模拟) vaping in the laboratory, using lung tissue samples provided by eight nonsmokers. They found that vapor (蒸汽,雾) of vaping damaged the activity of alveolar macrophages (肺泡巨噬细胞), cells that remove potentially damaging dust particles and bacteria. They said some of the effects were similar to those seen in regular smokers and people with chronic lung disease. Moreover, there’s pretty good evidence that vaping nicotine products is habit-forming and addictive, and there’s a great deal of concern among epidemiologists that in young people vaping can lead to smoking, which is obviously a bad thing.

5 . Lots of people may wonder why so many children feel anxious and depressed, despite good family situations, a wealth of educational resources and the care of their parents and teachers. The other day when I met with my interviewees for their stories and discussed the problem with them, the same question occurred to me.
I understand that hardworking parents want their children to perform well in all aspects, including their life and study and have a bright and promising future, but it seems that most of the time parents cannot give their children proper guidance based on actual situations. Many kids are their family’s only child, so they lack interaction with their siblings. As a result, when they don’t know how to get along with their classmates at school, they tend to become overwhelmed.
The symptoms of childhood depression are rarely obvious, meaning parents often fail to notice them early, which results in low diagnosis rates. Usually, by the time the seriousness of the problem has been realized, the child has entered a more serious state. Worse still, many parents have no idea on how to treat their child’s mental problems. They seem more inclined (有……倾向) to believe that the child is undergoing a phase of adolescent rebellion (叛逆) rather than a mental health issue.
After this interview, my understanding is that depression itself is not the thing that hurts those with such problems. Instead, the damaging thing is the perception of the problem. Society’s limited understanding of the condition may actually hinder (阻碍,妨碍) the patients’ recovery. One interviewee said that letting people know that there is a mentally ill person in your family often results in ridicule (嘲笑) and misunderstanding rather than friendly empathy (共鸣,同情), especially in smaller communities.
In spite of fierce competition in all walks of life, I still think that giving children a healthy and happy growth environment will play a more important role in producing a bright future than examination results.

Jackson’s family hired a driver. The driver’s family came to stay with them in a small house in their backyard. That’s how Jackson met the driver’s eight-year-old son Tom. From the day he met Jackson, Tom became his fan. For Tom, 11-year-old Jackson seemed to be a big boy. He would always follow Jackson around.
Tom didn’t go to school. He was admitted to a local government school, but he refused to go. He told Jackson shyly that the teachers only made them copy words from the blackboard. Since he hadn’t learned how to read, he could not understand anything that was written on the blackboard. Jackson felt sorry for him. On Sunday, Jackson saw Tom sitting under a tree holding an alphabet (字母表) book in his hands. Jackson walked quietly towards him and discovered that Tom was holding the book upside down.
Jackson took the book out of Tom’s hands and turned the right side up. “This is how you should read,” he told Tom. Two big tears rolled down Tom’s cheeks. Tom told Jackson, “I want to be like you, but I can’t do anything.” That evening, Jackson told his parents they had to help Tom get into a better school. It was not easy to make Tom admitted to a new school, because the time for admission was over.
Luckily, one principal (校长) looked at Tom kindly and admitted him to her school. The next day Tom went to his new school wearing a new shirt. But when Tom returned from school, he was a bit sad. The other children in his class had laughed at him. He told Jackson, “They all said I am much older than them but in a smaller class. I don’t want to go to school.”

8 . How would you like to increase the chance of achieving your goals? Whether you desire to lose weight, create financial independence, or raise responsible children, the formula for achieving any goal is the same. Here are some tips that will help you increase the probability of achieving your goals:
1.Identify what’s important to you!
The only goals you will succeed in reaching are those that are truly important to you.
2.Learn from those who have already achieved “your” goals.
Once you are clear on what you truly want to achieve, your next step is to learn what you need to know.
3.
Far too often people focus on what they need to do to achieve their goals and fail to consider who they must become. To accomplish something you have never accomplished before, you must be willing to do what you’ve never done before;
4. Put together a plan.
After learning from and studying those who have been successful in reaching similar goals, your next step is to put together your plan. You need to clearly outline what you need to do and when, step-by-step, and then reduce those steps into daily activities.
A.go where you’ve never been before |
B.Determine the person you need to become. |
C.Success comes from consistent daily action. |
D.Step out from the crowd and build a life for yourself that makes you proud! |

F.Knowing exactly what you need to do every day is important to achieving any worthwhile goal. |
G.The best source of knowledge will come from those who have already reached goals similar to yours. |
9 . If you see a group of people bend their knees, hold their arms out, and swing their bodies around...don’t panic, just a few surfskaters.
A surfskate board, which originated in the United States, is a type of skateboard that uses a specially-designed front truck to give riders the feeling of surfing on land. As riders shift weight between the heelside and topside, the special front truck turns the board sharply and helps produce momentum(冲力), pushing riders forward and changing directions.
