1 . Taking good notes is a time-saving skill that will help you to become a better student in several ways.
You will want to take notes during classroom discussions and while reading a textbook or doing research for a report.
● Read the text quickly to find the main facts and ideas in it.
●Carefully read the text and watch for words that can show main points and supporting facts.
● Write your notes in your own words.
●
● Note any questions or ideas you may have about what was said or written.
As you take notes, you may want to use your own shorthand (速记). When you do, be sure that you understand your symbols and that you use them all the time.
A.First, the simple act of writing something down makes it easier for you to understand and remember it. |
B.There are three practical note-taking methods. |
C.You must write your notes on separate paper. |
D.Otherwise, you may not be able to read your notes later. |
E.You will also want to develop your own method for taking notes. |
F.That means you must first decide what is important enough to include in your notes. |
G.Use words, not complete sentences. |
The watch was my grandfather’s. He hung it by his bed. The face was marked with elegant Roman numbers and the case was gold. My grandfather got it after his fifty years of devotion to his company. I often gazed at it longingly as I sat with my grandfather after school.
The day I told him of my success in the examinations, he was pleased, “You’ll be going to the new school next, Peter. Remember you’ll need plenty of patience. That’s the right way.” I nodded when handing him the watch.
The next morning my mother told me he had died in his sleep and left me his watch. For safety, my mother was to put it away until she considered me old enough to look after it. I protested (抗议) so strongly that she finally agreed to hang it in the kitchen where I could always see it.
The summer soon ended and it was time for me to enter the new school. I never made friends easily, and for a time I got along well with some boys. One of them was a rich fellow whose way of impressing us was to parade his belongings before us. Everything Crawley had was better than ours—until he showed off his watch.
“I have a better watch than that,” I announced, attempting to impress them. “Well, show it to us,” Crawley sneered (冷笑) in disbelief. Embarrassed, I promised to bring it to them that afternoon.
Considering there was no way to persuade my mother to let me take the watch, I decided to wait for her to step outside and slip the watch into my pocket. So I did. After lunch, as I was too excited to wait for the return bus, I got on my bike.
I rode fast, excitement crowding in. At the sight of school, I sped up. Then out of nowhere, a little dog ran out into my path. I pulled at my brakes so hard that the bike stopped suddenly and I fell over.

6 . Baratunde Thurston, a digital media adviser, decided to disconnect from his online life for twenty-five days — no Facebook, no Twitter, not even an e mail. He needed a break.
It didn’t take him long to adjust to a disconnected life. By the end of that first week, he was less stressed about not knowing new things.
His experiment summarizes two important points about our relationship with social networks like Facebook and Twitter. The first point is that we increasingly recognize that these tools reduce our ability to concentrate.
To fight back against these distractions (使人分心的事), Thurston felt his only option was to quit the Internet completely. But the problem is that no one actually follows Thurston.

7 . “The number of sightings has fallen during lockdown, although pigeons are increasing”, reports Mark Bridge, an editor of BBC Gardeners World Magazine. He notes that sightings of some of Britain’s best-loved garden birds have fallen, blaming the reduction on fewer hedges (篱) and over “tidy” gardening.
The annual review by BBC Gardeners World Magazine found that blackbirds, house sparrows, blue tits (蓝山雀) were spotted less often than in previous years. Sightings of blackbirds were reported by only 85 percent of interviewees last year, down from 90 percent in 2018. The number of interviewees reporting sightings of house sparrows fell from 79 percent to 75 percent in the same period, with a similar decline from 80 percent to 75 percent for blue tits.
Lucy Hall, the magazine chief editor, said, “while watching wildlife has been a great distraction from the pandemic, this decline in common UK bird species is a huge concern.” Hall said that reasons for the decline included the reduction of hedges as people smartened their living surroundings. “More hedges are coming down,” she said. “People are also transforming front gardens for parking. So the sorts of habitats we’ve provided... are being ripped out.”
“As an old Chinese saying goes, when the water is too clear, there are no fish. ‘Birds’ need as lightly messy space,” she said. “They need leaf litter, a bit of rotting wood at the back of a hedge. If you haven’t got a caterpillar, the blue tit has nothing to feed on. The good news is we can all do something to help make a big difference whether it’s filing bird feeders or installing bug boxes and log (原木) piles.”
While some species were in decline, others appeared to be going well. The number of interviewees seeing feral pigeons was up by eight percentage points to 59 percent since 2018. Common gulls were also up, while robins were the birds seen by the greatest number of interviewees at 91 percent.

8 . Scandinavian architecture is a relatively new construct that drew public attention within the last century. It tends to include works associated with Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland, and it is undoubtedly one of the more influential styles in modern times.
The Scandinavian design style is both simple and comfortable, modern and historic. Home builders influenced by this style are expert at mixing traditional vernacular (民间风俗的) styles with modern technology to create a space that is beautiful and aims to make your life better.
Before the early 20th century, much of Scandinavian architecture was vernacular in nature. Homes were built in a simple way using locally sourced materials and knowledge. However, it can be argued that this lack of formal architectural schooling promoted more craftsmanship and creativity as time went on. These vernacular builders were more concerned with function than form. An early example of this is the turf houses in Iceland, which were homes with green roofs that could keep the house in comfortable temperature throughout seasons in an affordable way.
The modern-day version of Scandinavian architecture grew out of this grassroots approach to building. Public buildings originally mixed Neoclassical elements with traditional building styles based on local practices. In the 1930s, the concept of Functionalism was introduced in Scandinavia. With its inspiration, architects wanted the buildings to be simple, but they also wanted them to be beneficial to people in some thoughtful way. For instance, the Paimio Sanatorium that was built in 1933 focused on maximizing quality air and light for tuberculosis (结核病) patients. So while modern architecture is all about simple, clean lines, Scandinavian architecture is that and also a style of building that thinks about how public spaces and homes can be valuable to humankind.

9 . Growing up in Colombia, Diana longed to explore the universe and gain more understanding of it. Her dad thought that being able to speak a second language would give her an advantage. He suggested she live with her aunt in Miami while going to school. Only 17 years old at the time, she accepted his suggestion.
With just $300 in her pocket, Diana took a series of housekeeping jobs to put herself through community college and later the University of Florida. In addition to learning English, she studied aerospace engineering. Sometimes she had to take six buses just to get to class. Other days she was cleaning bathrooms to continue her studies. But Diana saw everything coming her way as an opportunity.
Diana applied to the NASA Academy in her senior year of college, and was the first immigrant Latina in the academy. NASA hired her that year, and in 2009, she became a telecom system engineer for the Curiosity Rover (探测器) that landed successfully on Mars in 2012. During this mission, she developed a dust removal tool to help scientists better explore Mars’ surface, which earned her recognition as one of the 20 most influential Latinas in the technology industry. Since then, Diana has only kept setting the bar higher. In her second mission, it took her team two years to create the robotic arm for the Perseverance Rover that would bring back soil samples from the Red Planet to learn if there once was life there.
Right now, her mission is to help more Latinas realize they can be also successful in the exploration of science and technology. Last week, she hosted NASA’s first-ever Spanish-language live broadcast for Perseverance’s arrival on Mars and it gained more than 2.5 million views online.
