2 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

When I was in middle school, my family moved to Seattle, where my parents started their new business — a small grocery store downstairs my house. As a girl of shy and reserved nature, I had to take a fresh start to fit into the sophisticated city life.

One sunny day, my school announced an exciting event, a talent show for the local food bank. Students were encouraged to showcase their unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day. A buzz of excitement fed the school as everyone began preparing for the big day. Deep down, I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to participate. However, my self-doubt held me back, “I don’t have any special skills to share.”

Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer. I couldn’t shake the upsetting feeling until one day, Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the grocery store after class. “How about singing together in the talent show?” She grinned, “I heard you singing a tune, along the way back home. I can’t help following you here.” Gosh, I couldn’t believe my ears. Emma, with personality and popularity, acknowledged my little talent. Since Emma had the world’s prettiest voice, I felt like being favoured by fortune.

“You two? The talent show for the food bank?” My mum bent towards us and her face lit up. “A big occasion.” Then a light bulb seemed to go in her head. “Why not practise right now upstairs? I bet you’ll be a perfect match.” Winking at us, she seemed to know we were thinking alike.

Emma and I embarked on rehearsing almost every single day after school. We brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed the scene. As the days rolled by, I was feeling pretty good about our act. But the day before the performance, Emma called that she had an acute stomachache and was not in any shape to perform.

文章大意:这是一篇新闻报道。文章讲述了澳大利亚的大火为澳大利亚带来了危害,政府应制定明确的应对气候变化的计划。

5 . Standing on the ruins after the fire where his house had been, Peter Ruprecht admitted that he was not sure how or when to rebuild. He was still shocked by what Australia’s increasingly changeable climate had already delivered: first a drought, then a destructive bush fire, then a foot of rain from a storm.

“It’s unstoppable,” said Mr. Ruprecht, a former dairy farmer. “We speak about the warmth of Mother Nature, but nature can also be vicious and wild and frightening.”

Australia’s hellish (地狱的) fire season has eased (缓和), but its people are facing more than a single disaster. With floods destroying homes not far from where fires recently spread, they are facing a cycle of what scientists call “compound extremes”: one climate disaster strengthening the next.

Warmer temperatures do more than just dry out the land. They also heat up the atmosphere, which means clouds hold more moisture (水汽) for longer periods of time. So droughts get worse, giving way to fires, then to heavy rains that the land is too dry to absorb.

Many Australians in disaster zones complain that their government, after ignoring climate change for years, has not yet to draw up recovery plans that are clear and that take future threats into account.

At the same time, the economic costs of a changing climate are rising quickly. Philip Lowe, the governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia, warned recently that Australia was already paying a price, and that it would only go up.

1. Why is Peter Ruprecht’ story mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A.To lead to readers’ pity.B.To introduce the topic.
C.To stress the problem.D.To call on readers to help.
2. What does the underlined word “vicious” mean in Paragraph 2?
A.Grateful.B.Advanced.C.Responsible.D.Cruel.
3. What is the main reason for “compound extremes” in Australia?
A.No government action.B.Warmer temperature.
C.The lack of money.D.No recovery plans.
4. Where is the text probably from?
A.A guidebook.B.A travel magazine.
C.A news report.D.A book review.

文章大意:本文为一篇记叙文。文章介绍了作者和朋友在南美洲秘鲁之旅中的见闻感悟。

10 . On October 27, 2020, my friend and I boarded the first flight of our journey from Vancouver Island, to Peru, South America.

Twenty-four hours and four airports later we landed in Cusco, Peru, a city of one million people. Coming from Vancouver Island with only 100 feet above sea level, we knew that we were now at a much higher altitude (海拔) —over 11,000 feet—and needed time to get used to the scarcer oxygen (缺氧) levels! We followed the advice of other travellers and the locals: drink lots of coca (古柯) leaf tea and rest for a couple of hours before any activity.

We were soon hiking through the ruins (遗迹) and ancient castles of Cusco. Leaving Cusco the next day, we stopped at the Moray Ruins, which were used for farming by the Incas. Their size and unique design should be considered a lesson in historical engineering skills. This Inca site is one of the least known tourist destinations, but it’s one of the most interesting places to visit.

Arriving in the beautiful Sacred Valley, we stayed at Willka T’ika for the next week. This place is amazing. We enjoyed delicious meals, all made with local produce by loving Quechua people.

You can’t go to Peru without visiting Machu Picchu. The “road” up to the ruins is made up of endless switchbacks (急转弯), resulting in cold sweats (汗). It was worth the ride, though.

It was too soon before we were leaving Peru. We learned the unique history of Inca, Ouechua culture, and the farming methods still widely practiced. The best thing we took away returning home to Vancouver Island was how simple and caring the people are and how deeply they love the earth and everyone they meet.

1. Why did the author drink lots of coca leaf tea?
A.To have a good rest.B.To follow the local custom (习俗).
C.To feel better at a greater height.D.To avoid getting thirsty on the way.
2. What does the author think of the Moray Ruins?
A.They’re known to most travel lovers.B.They’re not as interesting as expected.
C.They’re no longer suitable for farming.D.They’re an example of creative engineering.
3. Which can best describe the author’s trip to Machu Picchu?
A.Safe but tiring.B.Risky but worthwhile.
C.Pleasant and interestingD.Comfortable and wonderful.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.A trip to Peru.B.The unique history of Peru.
C.Travel arrangements to Peru.D.Top three tourist destinations of Peru.
