My mom only had one eye. I hated her! She was such an embarrassment. She cooked for students and teachers to support the family. There was one day during elementary school when my mom came to say hello to me. I was so embarrassed. How could she do this to me? I ignored her, threw her a hateful look and ran out.
The next day at school one of my classmates said, “Your mom only has one eye!” I wanted to bury myself. I also wanted my mom to just disappear. I confronted her that day and said, “If you’re only going to make me a laughing stock, why don’t you just die?” My mom did not respond. I didn’t even stop to think for a second about what I had said, because I was full of anger, totally unaware of her feelings.
I wanted to get out of that house, and have nothing to do with her. So I studied real hard, and finally got a chance to go abroad for further study. Then, I got married with a local man. I bought a house of my own. I had kids of my own. I was happy with my life, my kids and the comforts.
Years passed, and I didn’t hear from my mom ever since I had left home. Sometimes I would think of her but every time thinking of the embarrassment brought by her embarrassingly one-eyed look, I still hoped that life would stay the same way and she would never appear in my life again.
Then one day, my mom came to visit me. She hadn’t seen me in years and she didn’t even meet her grandchildren. When she stood by the door, my children was scared to cry and ran to me. I calmed them down and asked my husband to lead them into the house.
I turned to her, looking at her weary face with more wrinkles and her gray hair. Obviously she was older and life surely didn’t treat her well. However, the uninvited visit still made me angry.

I am very delighted to enter my ideal school. For most freshmen, August is the month for military training, which serves as a good chance to get familiar with new classmates and adapt to campus life.
Our school’s training took place from Aug 23 to 29. One of the challenges was to make a blackboard presentation in the new classroom. When I found out that I was in charge of this project, I had butterflies in my stomach. After all, this was the first activity in our school life.
“Would other top students alienate (疏远) me? Could I manage to both complete this project and rehearse for the closing concert? What if my classmates wouldn’t follow instructions under my leadership? I was thinking of these tricky questions by myself.
The project began on Aug 24. The group of blackboard presentation was composed of four girls. The three other girls in the group were flexible. We gave up our lunch break hour and returned to the dormitory later at night so as to work longer on the project. One girl questioned my design, saying that we should abridge (删减) the text and leave more space for pictures. The disagreements between us upset me from time to time, but whenever there was a conflict, I tried to stay calm, decide whether to take her suggestions and then make adjustments accordingly. Gradually, I found her to be a person of strong opinion and organizational capabilities. Sometimes I was absent for a rehearsal, and I felt relieved to leave the project in her care. Other classmates turned out to be amazingly warm-hearted. Every day, five or six students came to ask me if they could help out with the decorations. Then came the big day.

At the age of 80, Mia always felt tired and it had nothing to do with her age, though. 16 years ago, her son, Lucas, died in a plane crash. After a long-time search, the rescuers said there were no survivors and no hope for the victims’ families.
The accident cast a shadow to the whole family. Lucas’s wife Zoe, still looking after their son Mark, had not recovered from his death, and Lucas’s mom Mia missed her son and often felt hopeless about life.
One day at home, when watching the news on TV, Mia and Zoe were suddenly shocked by what they were seeing. A news reporter was talking beside a man who looked like Lucas. He seemed older than he had ever been. The news caused great excitement. “It must be him!” Mia and Zoe exclaimed. “If you recognize this man, please call the number on the screen. Recently, a vague (模糊的) memory of having a plane crash hit this man’s mind. But he still doesn’t remember anything before the crash 16 years ago near the Monolith Islands. Authorities now have reasons to believe that there was a mistake in the previous report that the crash left no survivors...”
When the news ended, Zoe called the number immediately. She told the attendant that she believed the man was her husband Lucas and provided details. Zoe also asked for more information about what had happened over the past 16 years since the accident. The attendant said, “16 years ago, some local fishermen found him who lost his memory. They offered him a job, and he has worked and lived with one of them since then.”
This attendant then told Lucas that his family were waiting for him to go home. Weeks later, Lucas went to the city where Mia and Zoe lived. All the family members were waiting at the airport. Finally, the gates opened, and people were coming out.

7 . “Can we eat this one, Dad?” my four-year-old daughter, Alicia, asks. We’re on one of our Thursday adventures, searching the nearby woods for eatable mushrooms. She’s pointing at a bright-red cap covered with white dots. I pull out my handy mushroom-identification app, which notes that Amanita muscaria, while eatable if prepared properly, is also a known hallucinogen (致幻剂). I have a firm “tell them the truth and be as precise as possible” philosophy and explain what the app says, and that I don’t think our Thursday adventures are ready to get quite that adventurous yet.
Watching your kids learn new skills is extraordinarily rewarding, but I’ve experienced more personal growth than I have at any other point in my life.
Last year, after a winter of practicing skiing on the green tracks for beginners each week, Alicia was french-frying her way down blues and even attempted her first black. That month also witnessed me visiting the mountain more times than in the 15 years combined and I’ve got myself a partner for life.
It’s not all easy—but sometimes that’s the point. Alicia practices the violin every day, and although she enjoys it, even 15 minutes of practice can upset her. The trick, I’ve found, is to let her watch me try to get better at something, too. I start taking piano lessons at 41 years old with the idea that if she sees me struggling as I practice and then improve, she’ll understand that things don’t come easy, even for grown-ups. I know there’s going to be a time when I’ll end up on the sideline cheering her on as she finds her own passions. I’m okay with this, and I’m hoping that by then she’ll carry the joy of practice and knowledge through life.

On a Sunday afternoon, Kiana French was having fun fishing with her father and younger sister, not knowing the next minute, they would struggle not to sink in the freezing water. Their 12-foot boat was taking in water little by little, and the wind was picking up. Her father, Gary French, hurried to operate the engine, while Kiana,16, was in the middle with Cierrah, her sister, frightened but still able to keep calm.
Kiana asked Cierrah to take off one of her cowboy boots, with which she got some of the water out. Hard as she tried, that little effort would not help stop the boat sinking. Moments later, the unthinkable happened. The boat was full of water and then it flipped over. Kiana and her sister were dumped in the water. Their father, who had had a surgery six months ago, managed not to be thrown into the water but seemed to have great pain in the chest due to the sudden change.
Kiana quickly put on her life jacket and saw Cierrah’s and her father’s life jackets floating away. She reacted quickly to get them back and held her sister onto the boat. They were so far out in the middle of the lake that they could not see the shore clearly. What’s worse.it was getting harder to stay above the waves. Their father swam over and hugged his two girls. Cierrah crying silently. Kiana heard her beloved sister murmur, “I can’t feel my feet.”
Kiana knew the only thing to do was to get to shore herself and find help. She looked up at her father, exchanging a concerned glance, turned round and swam as hard as she could towards the shore
Fighting against the strong currents and cold wind, she screamed for help at the top of her lungs every three minutes or so. A strong wind blew, and she looked back only to see her sister’s and father’s heads bobbing(浮动)in the water. She burst into tears, thinking her sister and dad were dead, because she was taking too long.
