A boy named Ali had a large and harmonious family, happily living with his sisters, parents and grandmother. His grandmother loved everyone a lot and was respected by all family members. She was very old, but sometimes she would recall things from her past and share with them. Sometimes they would believe her but at other times they would think that Granny might be mixing up the facts due to her old age.
One day, when Ali was in school, suddenly while knitting (编织), Granny remembered something and she couldn’t contain her emotions so she got up to tell her son — Ali’s father. She walked as fast as she could to his room and said, “You always asked about my birth date, but do you know today is the day when I was born?”
She looked at her son with an excited expression, expecting an immediate response. However, her son wondered how she could remember her date of birth in this old age when she forgot so many other things, so he didn’t pay much attention to this. Disappointed at her son’s reaction, Granny then went to Ali’s mother and Ali’s sister, but like Ali’s father, nobody believed her.
Sadly, she went and sat in the terrace (庭院). When Ali returned from his school, he found his grandmother sitting alone with a sad expression. Ali asked his granny about the matter, but she said there was nothing to worry about. After a lot of persuasion she finally told him what was troubling her — nobody seemed to care that it was her birthday today!
After hearing what Granny said, Ali thought of a plan. Purely by chance, some of Ali’s friends were playing nearby so he shared his plan with them.
His friends were all willing to help Ali achieve what he planned.

5 . Cole Doss, 31, used his time on the microphone to make an announcement (广播) before the flight to honor his mom, a flight attendant for over 40 years.
“She’s been one of my biggest supporters in my life and in my career (职业) becoming a pilot, ever since my very first flight lesson,” Doss told passengers, later adding, “To my mom, I love you, and without you, I wouldn’t have chosen such a great job.”
Doss said the flight last month from Washington, D. C. to Madrid was not only the first time he and his mom had worked on a flight together, but also the first time his mom had been on a flight that he piloted.
“That was the first time I had been able to fly my mom ever,” he said. “In flight school, she was a little nervous about the small planes, so I was never able to fly with her there.” Doss said his mom typically works on Asia-bound flights, but when she learned he was piloting a flight to Spain, she switched (调班) schedules with a fellow flight attendant so she could be on the same flight.
On the day of the flight, Doss, having been a United Airlines pilot since February 2022, and his mom also worked on the return flight back to Washington, D. C. together. “I wanted to do something special to pay back my mom and let everyone know that this was a really cool event for both of us,” he said.

Jim slumped on the couch. Mother’s Day was coming up, and he didn’t have a present. “How can I buy a present without money?” he thought.

I didn’t argue one bit.It was good to be outside again, even if it was for just a few minutes.I looked down at the things he’d gotten. There was a sack of cornmeal, a side of bacon, and a large jug of whiskey.I toted them up to the cabin, and then went back down to bring the boat up on the shore so it wouldn’t wash away.
I looked back at the cabin, and then over at the woods. If I wanted to, I could take off running right now. I’d just keep going as far away as my feet would carry me. But that’s when Pap yelled, “Boy, are you asleep or drowned?”
I trudged back up to the cabin. By then it was nearly dark.
I was cooking our supper when the old man started drinking. He still kept on yelping about the government. He was fighting mad. But after a while, he’d drank too much and fell asleep right there on the floor.
I figured I could sneak over and take the key from his pocket, but he was having a restless sleep. He kept moaning and rolling around. I knew it was no use! I waited and waited for him to settle down, but then I got too tired. I just couldn’t keep my eyes open, and I fell asleep.
It was after sunup when Pap woke me. “Get out there and catch us some fish,” he ordered.
I grabbed my pole and headed out. The water in the river was running swift, and all kinds of branches and bark were floating downstream. I knew then that the water had risen.
I was about to throw my fishing line in when I saw something else floating toward me. It was a canoe.
I couldn’t let it pass by. I jumped in and swam over to it. It was empty inside. I thought, Pap will love this. I bet it’s worth ten dollars. But then I had a better idea.
I pulled that canoe up on the banks and hid it behind some bushes. When I had my chance, I’d paddle the canoe down the river and set up camp. No one would ever find me. “Where’ve you been, and why are you so wet?” Pap fussed. When I got back.
“I fell in the river.”
He grumped around a while, and then locked me inside the cabin again. Once he set off for town, I had my chance.
