Mike insisted the bed must be made every day. He and Linda were newly married, so Linda played along. Linda figured he took after his mother rather than his father. However, she took after her parents, who had the girl make the bed. Linda and Mike had no child, of course. They were young and poor and they made the bed in the apartment early in the morning on weekdays before they went to work.
Their habit of faithful bed making continued through the birth of their three children.Linda learned from her mother that even when she was in the hospital having a baby (which Linda did three times in three years), Mike made the bed without fail.
Finally Linda and Mike made the “Big Move” and arrived in California. When they were invited to neighborhood dinner parties, Linda found most Californians just pulled a quilt (被子) over their messy bed, but she always had a proper bedspread (床单), which she folded neatly over the pillows.
Once, when Linda and Mike were having a quarrel, she refused to make the bed. Without saying anything at all, Mike did the job alone.
Of course, years later the children grew up and moved out. There were a lot of changes. Still, Linda and Mike stood on both sides of their bed every morning, neatly making the bed. Whenever Linda wanted to give up their daily routine, Mike would ask her to help him make the bed with determination. It seemed important to his peace of mind.
After they celebrated their fortieth wedding anniversary, it occurred to Linda that the way they made the bed was like a symbol of their marriage. Their style had always been both of them working as a team. Mike painted walls, created vegetable gardens and fixed everything that broke inside the house and out.Linda prepared meals and did most of the childcare. This system worked well for them for many a year.

A Secret Promise Kept
When I was a little boy, I loved to visit the fire station where my father worked. Sometimes Dad would give me a ten cents to buy a soda (汽水).
One day, I took two friends to the station to show my dad off. I asked Dad if we could each have a soda before we went home for lunch. I sensed just the slightest hesitation in my father’s voice. But he said “sure” and gave us each a dime (一毛钱). We each bought a soda and headed home for lunch and a summer afternoon of swimming.
When I came home, I heard my parents talking. Mom seemed upset with Dad, and then I heard my name mentioned. “You should have just said you didn’t have money for sodas. Brian would have understood. We don’t have any extra money, and you need to have your lunch.”
I suddenly realized the sacrifice (牺牲) my father had made for it. For the next twenty years, he worked three jobs to support my big family.
One afternoon Dad’s old car broke down, and he asked me to take him to his doctor’s appointment. As I pulled up to the firehouse, I saw Dad outside around a brand-new pickup truck with the other firemen. It was a beauty. Dad said, “Someday, I’ll own a truck like that.”
My brothers and I were doing well in business. We had offered to buy him a truck, but he refused.
When Dad stepped out of the doctor’s office, his face was pale. “Let’s go,” was all he said.
We drove by the old house, the lake and the corner store, and Dad started talking about the memories each place held and how proud he was of us. That was when I knew he was dying, which totally shocked me. He made me promise that I would never tell anyone of his impending (迫近的) death. I agreed, knowing it was the toughest secret to keep.

10 . It was a carefree summer day when a father, Steven Poust, was out boating on the St. John’s River with his 4-year-old daughter Abigail and 4-year-old son Chase. The children were playfully swimming near their anchored boat while their father was fishing, smiling at his kids. Suddenly, Abigail got caught in the powerful current, forcing her to release the handle on the boat. Chase let go of the boat to take hold of his little sister, but he found himself caught in the current. When Steven jumped into the water to rescue his struggling children, he was also pulled in.
As they all drifted farther from the boat, the desperate father pushed his son to a safer place and tried to stick with his daughter as long as he could. However, he wore himself out later, and she drifted away from him. The father had to follow his daughter. So the responsibility to save the family was now on young Chase’s shoulders.
Steven instructed his son to swim to the shore and find immediate help. Meanwhile, he would attempt to retrieve his little girl, who was continuously being pulled farther from his reach.
Chase did as he was told. The young boy was swimming against the current, which made it more difficult to swim toward the shore. However, the young boy continued to swim with one thought in mind: to save his family. Chase swam as fast as he could to reach the riverbank. When he grew tired, Chase cleverly floated on his back; at times, he paddled to conserve his energy. Once he reached the shore, he raced to the closest house he could find, knocked on the door and screamed for help. The owners answered and immediately dialed 911.
The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department responded quickly. They located the empty boat. In the water, they found kids’ shoes, a cellphone and fishing poles floating near the boat. After a 90-minute search, the search crew located the father and the daughter in the water, who had been swept a mile and a half from their abandoned boat.
