Chloe, a kind and hardworking girl, lived in the small village with her parents. Being an only child, she often felt lonely. Even at school she did not have a best friend. She was quite shy and often too afraid to talk to her classmates. After school she returned home and played with her young dog. She wished she had friends like other girls.
When the reopened at the beginning of the term, Chloe got ready for the school and slung (悬挂) her backpack on her shoulder. “Bye. Mum,” she called out, stepped out of her house and walked to school.
As she was walking, a girl of about the same age as her ran past. She was running so fast that her bag was swinging from side to side. “That girl must be in a hurry,” Chloe thought. The she remembered that on the first day of school there would be an assembly (大会) in the morning. She quickened her steps.
Suddenly, Chloe heard a scream. She ran ahead and saw that the girl who had ran past her just then had tripped on a stone and fallen. “Are you OK?” asked Chloe with concern.
The girl looked up. Chloe saw that she was crying, and there was a deep cut on her knee from which blood was oozing (流出). “Thank you. I am OK,” said the girl, though it was clear that she was in pain.
“What’s your name?” asked Chloe. ‘I am Minnie,” said the wounded girl. “Minnie,” Chloe said softly, “your knee is bleeding. Come, I will take you home.” “It’s Ok. I will be all right. You’d better hurry, since today there is an assembly at school,” Minnie said, trying to get up.

2 . I was born in Venice, one of the most popular tourist attractions in Italy, and studied designing at university here. Though I have also spent time away, I have always come back because it’s my home.
In Venice, there are no roads, only canals, so you have to get around on foot or by boat. I live on a canal in the Rialto area in a house that was built in 1588 for the Muti family, who were businessmen in the silk trade. In the mid-eighteenth century, it was home to the Vezzi family, who made things like plates and bowls in fine china and became rich by sending these around the world. These businessmen’s houses in Venice are like palaces. Their owners had to have space to show off their goods, but the building also had to be an office, a factory, a store and a home. My house came into our family in 1919, when it was bought by my grandfather. He died before I was born but he was the director of a museum where I often do research on old documents. On some of these, I’ve seen notes in his handwriting, so, in a way, I met him through these documents.
Sadly, the population of Venice has dropped from 120,000 in the 1950s to about 60,000 now. This doesn’t include the thousands of tourists who come to visit. I welcome the tourists but unless something is done to stop everyday shops like bakeries from disappearing, the city will die. I want people who love the city to come here to live and work and give Venice back a life that is not just about tourism.

10 . The number of people in my house has grown from six to seven recently. A young man from Spain has come to spend six weeks with us. He is no ordinary young man; he’s actually my second cousin, and is here to spend time with this side of the family, and of course, to learn English.
Thankfully, he is the same age as my youngest son, and is very fun-loving. I’m sure that he will learn a lot of English while he plays with my kids. That was actually how I picked up a lot of Spanish when I was a child. My mother would take me to Mallorca in Spain, to spend about a month in the summers. Because children play so much, and are more active than adults, they absorb language like little sponges(海绵). Well, that’s what happened to me, and I’m very thankful for the experience.
So far, we have taken my cousin to Seattle for a couple of days, and down to a local river to look for gold. Today, I plan on taking him to the museum in the town of Cashmere which is excellent. He will get his first view of Native American life, and be able to walk through some of the original pioneer houses of this area. Like most boys who are thirteen, he is very curious and constantly asks questions. Of course, I don’t always have the answers! Coming to the US is a big step for him, especially being so young. Mind you, he is a world traveller. His mother is an air hostess and is able to get cheap airline tickets, so they travel internationally all the time. So he is extremely comfortable in airports, and understands the routines of getting from one place to another. I hope that his being here will encourage my children to spend time in Spain, and also become international travelers.
