2 . Last fall, I went to New York for sightseeing. I visited many tourist attractions there, and I also saw many unfortunate citizens on the street, like beggars and homeless folks.

Standing outside the Metropolitan Museum of Art, I heard a voice ask, “Can you do me a favor?” When I turned around, I saw an elderly blind woman with her hand extended out. Naturally, I reached into my pocket for some change immediately and placed it in her hand without even looking at her. I was really annoyed at being bothered by a beggar. What I only thought at that moment was to send her away.

But the blind woman said with a warm smile on her face, "I don't want your money. I just need you to show me the way to the subway entrance."

In an instant, I realized what I had done just now. Her unexpected words took me by surprise and shame. I had acted with prejudice ——I'd judged another person simply for what I assumed she had to be. I felt ashamed of myself and couldn't face the old woman anymore. And I felt small beside her.

The incident reminded me that I believed in being humble, even though I had lost that belief for a moment. The thing I had forgotten about myself is that I am an immigrant. I left Honduras and arrived in the U. S. at the age of 15. Through the years, I have experienced many acts of prejudice. I remember a time at the age of 17 when I was a busboy, I heard a father tell his little boy that if he did not do well in school, he would end up like me. But now, living my American middle-class lifestyle, it is too easy to forget who I am and where I have been, and to lose sight of where I want to go. It is the blind woman who cured me of my blindness.

1. What did the author think the blind woman wanted at first sight?
A.To ask for directions.B.To offer him some help.
C.To demand some donations.D.To borrow money from him.
2. Why did the author feel ashamed?
A.He had a prejudice on the woman.B.He couldn't face the woman.
C.He was judged by his appearance.D.He was an immigrant himself.
3. Why did the author mention his experience as a busboy?
A.To indicate he led a miserable life.B.To tell he didn't work hard at school.
C.To prove he used to be a humble man.D.To show he used to be unfairly judged.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.Be Considerate - Always Minding Your Words
B.Be Humble - Always Dropping Your Prejudice
C.Be Generous - Always Helping Those in Need
D.Be Aggressive - Always Having a Big Dream

3 . Eve was having a party! She had been given a karaoke set for her birthday, so she invited all her friends round for a special competition evening. The best singer would win a prize of a huge box of her delicious cookies.

Everyone came along: Helen, Jane, and Peter, who looked a bit nervous. “Don’t worry, Peter. We’re only here to have some fun,” said Eve kindly. Jane was first up on stage (舞台). The minute she began to sing, everyone could tell she’d been practicing! Next, it was Helen’s turn. Her voice was not as strong as Jane’s, but she had a great sense of rhythm (节奏) and seemed to enjoy being on stage. All the girls took their turn singing. There were a few wrong notes, but all in all, everyone had a wonderful time.

“Come on, Peter. It’s your go now!” said the girls. But Peter shook his head. “No thanks. I’d be totally hopeless!” he said. “If you like, we can sing together. It won’t be as scary (可怕的) that way!” offered Eve. Peter gave in. He and Eve shared the microphone (话筒) and they began to sing a rock song. At first, you could hardly hear the voice of the shy boy but slowly, encouraged by his friends, he forgot his stage nervousness. Soon, Peter was holding the microphone on his own and singing his heart out! His singing was a bit off-key (走调的), but he made up for that by his performance. He danced around the stage like a real rock star!

At the end of the song, the girls all cheered. Eve stepped forward and handed him the big box of home-made cookies. “Peter, we all agree that you’ve won the prize!” she said. “OK, you may not exactly sing like an angel, but you really know how to put on a show!”

7 . Everyone needs friends. There is an old saying, "Friends are God’s way of taking care of us." But how do you find real friendship and keep it?

Last Saturday, I pay a visit to my elder sister, who has a four-year-old daughter, Lisa. I was about to tell my niece the story “Snow White” when my sister stopped me immediate and gave me other storybook. When I asked her if she had told Lisa the story, she shook her head and said, “I don’t think girls today should listen this story.” I was confusing. Later, she gave me a explanation. In the story, Snow White does nothing to rescue herself. Instead, she depends on others’ help. My sister doesn’t want her daughter to be a person which likes turning to others for help. She wants to Lisa to learn to be brave and independent. That’s how my sister doesn’t want to tell her such story as are not good for character building.

10 . In choosing a friend, one should be very careful. A good friend can help you study. You can have fun together and make each other happy. Sometimes you will meet fairweather friends. They will be with you as long as you have money or luck, but when you are down, they will run away. How do I know when I have found a good friend? I look for certain qualities of character, especially understanding, honesty and reliability(可靠).

Above all else, I look for understanding in a friend. A good friend tries to understand how another person is feeling. He is not quick to judge. Instead, he tries to learn from others. He puts himself in the other person’s place, and he tries to think of ways to be helpful. He is also a good listener.

At the same time, however, a good friend is honest. He does not look for faults in others. He notices their good points. In short, a friend will try to understand me and accept me.

Another quality of a friend is reliability. I can always depend on a good friend. If he tells me he will meet me somewhere at a certain time, I can be sure that he will be there. If I need a favor,he will do his best to help me. If I am in trouble, he will not run away from me.

There is a fourth quality that makes a friend special. A special friend is someone with whom we can have fun. We should enjoy our lives, and we would enjoy our friendship. That is why I especially like friends who are fun to be with. A good friend likes the same things I like. We share experience and learn from each other. A good friend has a good sense of humor too. He likes to laugh with me. That is how we share in the joy of being friends. And I know that he is looking for the same quality in me.

When I meet someone who is reliable, honest, and understanding,I know I’ve found a friend!

1. Which of the following qualities the writer thinks is the most important in choosing a friend?
