文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。讲述了作者帮助祖父整理家族谱系,从中慢慢了解到自己家族的故事,也更深刻理解了家人的含义。

1 . One summer during high school, my mom volunteered me to help Grandpa research our family tree. It’s terrible to imagine hours spent dusting boxes and listening to boring stories about people I didn’t know. “You’ll be surprised,” my mom promised. “Family history can be very interesting.”

In truth, Grandpa didn’t want to limit(限定) my work to just research, hoping to also keep our family memories. He’d discovered a computer program that helped digitally scan(扫描) old pictures and letters to maintain their contents before they crumble from age. Grandpa wanted me to help him connect the scanner and set up the computer program. He could type documents and send emails, but had never used a scanner.

Soon after, I became interested my relatives’ lives. I asked Grandpa to tell the story behind every picture and letter we scanned. The stories, which turned out not to be boring at all, helped me not only understand but also relate to my relatives. I became so eager for more information that Grandpa needed additional props(道具) to keep me satisfied. He showed me a chest filled with random stuff, all covered in dust.

Looking through their belongings, I felt I was opening a window to the world of my relatives, a world long since gone. Grandpa showed me letters he had sent to Grandma from the front line of World War II and I could almost smell the gunpowder. I turned the pages of my great-grandmother’s recipe book and could picture her cooking in her kitchen. All of the people who had been only names to me now had faces to match.

Later, Grandpa admitted, “I probably could have done this project myself. I just wanted someone to share it with.” I can’t thank him enough for sharing the experience and making me appreciate the family members who have made me who I am.

1. Which can best describe the author’s first impression of the research?
A.Delightful.B.Boring.
C.Surprising.D.Interesting.
2. What does the underlined word “crumble” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Come to life.B.Tear apart.
C.Fall to pieces.D.Break through.
3. Why did Grandpa give the author a chest?
A.To show him old letters.B.To keep him away from boredom.
C.To give him something to sort out.D.To satisfy his eagerness to know more.
4. What can we learn about Grandpa from the passage?
A.He possibly served as a soldier in the past.

C.He buried the letters under gunpowder
D.He loved sharing what he had with others

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。记录了作者公司员工午餐被偷,然后作者想办法抓到了小偷的办公室故事。

2 . I worked in a small company with about thirty-five employees (雇员). We had a good-sized kitchen with a fridge that several employees used. But people would often go to the fridge to surprisingly find either their whole lunch missing, or in my case, my can of Cherry Coke gone. I usually kept it in my lunch bag. At times when I bought takeaway food, I would get two—one for lunch and one for dinner—so I didn’t have my lunch bag. Even so, I often couldn’t find the food. It was a shock to everyone.

We doubted who was stealing, but could never prove (证明) it. One day, a good idea came to my mind, and I couldn’t wait to try it.

It was break time at noon. I headed down to the kitchen about five minutes early and gave my Coke such a hard shake that I feared it may actually go off in my hands. I placed it back in the fridge. Then, I hid into a cupboard in the kitchen, waiting for the right moment.

BINGO! A lady came in and took the Coke. I put my hand over my mouth for her to open it, but she took it with her and left. I thought she would open it in the hall. No!

As I left the kitchen, I heard her yell (叫喊). I passed her office, and Coke was everywhere: the walls, the floor, all over her desk, computer, her work, and all over her—everywhere!

Well, food has never gone missing again since then because the lady got fired.

1. Why did the employees feel surprised?
A.Their lunch was often lost.
B.The fridge was full of free food.
C.The kitchen was never clean.
D.The company was small-sized.
2. Why did the author hide in the kitchen?
A.To play a joke on the lady.
B.To carry out some repairs inside.
C.To find out who was stealing.
D.To prove who was the best worker.
3. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.The kitchen.B.The drinkC.The hand.D.The fridge.
4. What is the text mainly about?
A.A small company.B.An honest lady.
C.A special lunch.D.An office story.

It was time for graduates to hunt for jobs. The majority of them didn’t have working experience for they had spent most of their time at school studying academic subjects. It was not until they graduated from college that they realized it was a challenge for them to land jobs.

Jimmy, one of these job hunters, was a young academically excellent person. One day, after making good preparations, he went to apply for a managerial position in a big company. In spite of fierce competition, he managed to pass the first interview. What a lucky dog! Jimmy was informed to come for the next round in a few days — the last interview for the company to make the final decision.

The big day finally came. He dressed neatly, the grey tie matching perfectly the decent suit. Blood rushing to his face and heart pounding heavily, he tried to calm down, and then took a few deep breaths. It was his turn.

The interviewer, an elegant lady, discovered from the CV that the youth’s academic achievements were excellent all the way, from the secondary school until the postgraduate research. After several rounds of questions related to the position, she asked, “Have you ever done any part-time jobs?” “None.” After a while, the interviewer asked who paid for Jimmy’s school fees. The youth answered in a low voice, “My father passed away when I was one year old, so it was my mother who paid for all my school fees.”

She continued, “What did your mother do?” “My mother worked as a clothes cleaner.” The lady requested the youth to show his hands. The youth showed a pair of hands that were smooth and perfect.

The interviewer paused for a second, leaning against the chair, “Have you ever helped your mother wash the clothes before?” Ashamed, Jimmy replied, “Never. My mother always wanted me to study and read more books. Furthermore, my mother can wash clothes faster than me.” She nodded, adding, “I have a request. When you go back today, go and clean your mother’s hands, and then see me back here tomorrow morning.”
