1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完 整的短文。

When Ms. Chow announced the coming “Battle of the Books”, we were so excited. She said, “You’re going to be in teams of three, and you’ll need to set a reading goal for your team. Every team that meets their goal by the end of the month will get a prize!”

That sounded pretty good to me. Wyatt turned to me, saying, “Teammates?”

“Oh, sure!” I said. Wyatt and I liked a lot of the same books, so we could set a goal like reading every graphic novel (漫画小说) in a series.

The lunch bell sounded before Ms. Chow could explain any more rules. Liya came to our desk and said “Teammates?” to Wyatt and me.

“Yeah, teammates!” Wyatt and I answered happily. Liya could read super-fast in both Hindi and English. If we set a goal like reading books by authors from different countries, she could help the team for sure.

Over lunch, we discussed what we needed to do for the contest (竞赛) when Kash came to us.“Do you have ideas for us?”I asked him.

Kash said, “Why would I give you guys ideas? I’ll save them for my team. ”

“Kash, come on, ”I said. “It’s teams of three. Wyatt and Liya said something to me first. If you had, then it would be different. ”

“I see how I rank (属于某等级) in the friendship lineup, ”Kash said angrily, and left.

We were very surprised, but we understood him. The four of us always did things together. I felt the only way to fix this was to allow four people on a team.

So, in the afternoon we went to see Ms. Chow. Guess what? She told us she was going to draw names to assign random groups (随机分配组).

As we walked out of the office, we became silent. We knew even if Ms. Chow had let us form a four-person group, Kash knew we had first teamed up without him. We knew we wouldn’t be able to enjoy any prize if one of our best friends felt bad about being left out. What could we do to clear up this misunderstanding?

Chintu and Banti were two good friends in India. Banti was a very honest boy, but Chintu was not. Once they decided to enjoy their summer holidays together. They went out to a hill station for a week. Both enjoyed their stay at the hill station. After seven days, they planned to return. As soon as they reached the station, they found a bag lying at the station platform .

Chintu noticed it first and picked it up. He opened it and saw a lot of cash and jewelry in it. Chintu tried to hide it in his suitcase. But Banti suggested, “Chintu, we are honest people. We should not keep it with us. Somebody must have lost it and we should ask the people at the station. If someone is able to tell what is inside it, we shall hand over the bag to him or her. Listen to my advice, or you will pay for your foolishness in the end.”

“No, no, you are a fool. Everybody will come to say this is his own bag. I have found it, so this is mine,” Chintu said.

Banti said, “What are you saying? Even if you do not want to give it to the real owner, we should divide it into two parts. Both of us have found it, and we have shared every moment, every food, and every joy here together. Therefore, we should divide the cash and jewelry also into two parts.”

“I don’t agree with you. I saw it first, so it is mine.” Saying so, Chintu put the bag into his suitcase. Meanwhile the train was pulling into the station. Chintu and Banti boarded the train. As soon as they took their seats, they began talking with each other. When the night fell, they began feeling sleepy.

After some time the train stopped at a station. Suddenly they saw a few policemen entering their compartment ( 隔间). Chintu was frightened to see them, and he tried to put his suitcase behind his back. Chintu spoke to Banti in a very low voice, quite nervous, “We are in great trouble. The police have come. When Hari came back after graduation, her father asked her to join his company as an accountant. However, she was naturally not happy with that. She wanted to work on a higher post as a CEO of the company while her father wanted her to start as an ordinary girl.

“Time to get up. It’s your birthday.” Alex opened his eyes and looked up. His parents were standing next to his bed holding a breakfast muffin. “We can do anything you want today,” said his mom.

He jumped up to get dressed as quickly as he could, already imagining what kind of day he would have at the beach. He had always dreamed about playing in the sand and jumping in the waves. He nearly tripped (绊倒) as he ran down the stairs on his way to the kitchen.

Alex’s dad asked him what he wanted to do today. “The beach,” he shouted with joy.

The expression on his mom’s face changed from joy to sadness. She knew the one place that he would not go was the beach. When her husband had been a young boy of Alex’s age, he had a terrifying experience at the beach. Alex’s dad shook off his initial (最初的) shock of hearing his son’s plan.

“How about we go to the zoo instead?” he suggested. “The beach is over two hours away.”

“But dad, I’ve wanted to go to the beach my WHOLE life,” Alex pleaded.

“Son, I’m sorry, but we are not going to the beach and that’s final.”

They ended up driving to the zoo. It was an exciting day, but Alex could not get the beach out of his mind. He yearned to build a sandcastle, swim in the ocean and chase the incoming and outgoing waves. The beach seemed like the best place on earth.

Over the next few weeks, he dreamed about it almost every night. Any free moment he had was spent filling his room with pictures and drawings of beaches. He repeatedly pleaded with his mom to help him convince his dad to take them to the beach. Each time she explained that they could do other things as a family, just not the beach.

One night, Alex received what he thought was good news. His dad was going on a three-day business trip the next day. “This is an opportunity,” he thought to himself.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My best friend Carla Hernandez called me on Thursday afternoon. She asked me to meet her in the park near the playground five minutes later. She said she had a great idea! This worried me because Carla’s great ideas almost always meant big trouble for me!

I rushed outside and jogged to the park. When I saw Carla, my heart sank because her huge dog Perro was with her. I liked everything about Carla except Perro. I’d never had a pet, so I felt uncomfortable and nervous around animals. I was embarrassed to say that I was afraid of Carla’s dog. Carla smiled. “Isn’t this the perfect location for a pet show?” she asked. “All the kids in the neighborhood can show off their pets’ talents and demonstrate the things they do well. There are plenty of comfortable benches (长椅) for our parents and friends to sit on. And since you don’t have a pet to enter into the show, you will be the announcer.”

“I’m sorry,” I apologized, “but that’s impossible! Crowds made me nervous and unsure. Besides, I didn’t like animals, remember?” “That’s nonsense,” said Carla. “There’s nothing to be concerned about because you’ll be great!” Carla encouraged me to be brave and confident. But just then, Perro leaped up, slobbered all over (毫不掩饰地表示喜爱) me, and almost knock me down. “Down, Perro! Stay!” I shouted. Perro sat as still as a statue. “Wow, you’re good at that,” said Carla. She thought I was talented at giving orders to pets, and asked me to get started with her immediately because we would have a lot to do.

By Saturday morning I had practiced announcing each pet’s act a hundred times. I felt my heart pounding by the time the audience arrived. The size of the crowd made me feel even more anxious. When the show began, I announced the first pet, nervously. It was a bird named Butter whose talent was walking back and forth on a wire. When Butter finished, everyone clapped and cheered. So far, everything was perfect.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

One day last June, I picked my son up from afterschool care to take him to the second of his twice-weekly boxing classes. He was tired and hungry and didn’t feel like going. “Can you drive me to the dam (大坝), Mom? I want to find something fun there,” he begged. The Colliery Dam is a pleasant attraction in our town. Beautiful big trees with birds calling, a freshwater reservoir (水库) filled with fish, and acres of paths to wander. But I insisted I had decided that it was important that he finish what he started, and that it was equally important to teach him that sometimes we have to do things even when we don’t feel like it.

Effectively, I was ignoring an eight-year-old’s request for some rest. He went to school five days a week, as well as before and afterschool care; he had a tutor once a week, two boxing classes and gymnastics on the weekend. However, I felt it justified in that he’s a very active boy and needs ways to get out all his energy.

But on this particular day, he was not going to let me ignore his feelings, however hard I tried. He even declared that he would never go to the boring boxing classes and instead take the painting courses he had been longing for. As usual, I rejected, claiming that’s an activity for girls. As we got in the hot car for a 15-minute drive to boxing, he returned to a three-year-old--he screamed and cried and kicked my seat.

We pulled into the parking lot, both of us worn out, annoyed and angry. My son took off his seat belt and curled (蜷缩) into a ball on the floor. What was I doing? Why was I so determined that he go to boxing? Was I worried that his absence would reflect badly on me as a parent somehow? Wouldn’t it actually teach him that I heard he was tired and hungry and needed a break and that it was just as well that boys took painting classes? “Put on your seat belt,” I said. “We’re going to the dam.”

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Jack tossed(抛,扔)the papers on my desk—his eyebrows knit(皱眉)into a straight line as he glared at me.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

He pointed at the proposal. “Next time you want to change anything, ask me first,” He said, turning on his heels and leaving me in anger.

How dare he treat me like that, I thought. I had changed one long sentence, and corrected grammar, something I thought I was paid to do.

It’s not that I hadn’t been warned. Other women who had worked my job before me called Jack names I couldn’t repeat. One coworker took me aside the first day. “He’s personally responsible for two different secretaries leaving the firm,” she whispered.

As the weeks went by, I grew to hate Jack. His actions made me question much that I believed in, such as turning the other cheek and loving your enemies. I prayed about the situation, but to be honest, I wanted to put Jack in his place, not like him.

One day another of his episodes left me in tears. I stormed into his office, prepared to lose my job if needed, but not before I let the man know how I felt. I opened the door and Jack glanced up. “What?” he asked abruptly.

Suddenly I knew what I had to do. After all, he deserved it.

I sat across from him and said calmly, “Jack, the way you’ve been treating me is wrong. I’ve never had anyone speak to me that way. As a professional, it’s wrong, and I can’t allow it to continue.”

Jack snickered(暗笑)nervously and leaned back in his chair. I closed my eyes briefly. God help me, I prayed.

“I want to make you a promise. I will be a friend,” I said. “I will treat you as you deserve to be treated, with respect and kindness. You deserve that. Everybody does. That’s what friends do.” I slipped out of the chair and closed the door behind me.

Like every boy there ever was, what Kyle Hrenwood most wanted in this world was a dog. Unfortunately for Kyle, his mom didn’t think he was responsible enough.

The day before Kyle’s thirteenth birthday, he went to the park and found a woman sobbing. He was immediately worried. Was the woman hurt?

He bent over and said “Miss, Are you OK? Do you want me to call anyone?” The woman shook her head and said, “My husband died two weeks ago, and I feel alone. We’d been together for thirty years. I can’t stand the silence inside that house. I’m Deidre. What’s your name?”

Kyle introduced himself and they talked for a long time. Kyle’s encounter with Deidre left him very sad, and he decided to go home. “Mom,” he said. “I don’t want to get married.” “Why not?” asked Kyle’s mom. “What if you spend thirty or forty years with someone,” Kyle said. “And then he is dead, and you’re alone?” Mom said, “Then you’ll miss out on love. You see, if you protect yourself from feeling pain, you’re cutting yourself off from happiness. You may discover those thirty years alone are not worth living.”

The next day, he had one of the biggest surprises and greatest joys of his life—a puppy! That was when he remembered Deidre was alone in her huge house.

A few hours later, Kyle knocked on Deidre’s door holding the puppy. He said, “Today is my birthday, and my parents gave me this puppy. You need this puppy more than I do.” “Give my heart to an animal just so it can die in a few years’ time?” Deidre asked bitterly. “I don’t think so. I don’t need any more pain in my life!”

“My mom said that if you protect yourself from feeling pain, you’re cutting yourself off from happiness. too,” Kyle said.

“You’re right, Kyle!” Deidre said. “I do need this puppy. Maybe you can visit us both; I’ve never had a dog before and may need some advice!”

Over the next few years, Kyle and Deidre, and Max (that was the dog’s name) became great friends. Then Kyle’s dad was offered a job in another state, and the family moved away.

A Christmas Visit

As 17-year-old Torriell Norwood drove through St. Petersburg, Florida, last February with her friends to pay a visit to the great park, she shared her dream of becoming a doctor. She had recently taken some first aid courses. The other girls shared stories of their experiences and adventures. But the laughter and chatter from the four teenage girls in the car quickly gave way to screams, As they passed a road junction(交叉路口), a car crashed into the side of their vehicle, sending their black car sailing into the yard of a nearby home. It only stopped when it crashed into a tree. All of the girls were in panic.

As smoke rose from the car, a bystander(旁观者)shouted, “It’s about to blow up . Get out. ”The impact had bent the driver’s door, meaning it wouldn’t open. The bystander seized the door handle of the car, using all his strength to pull it open, but failed. Shaken, but otherwise OK. Norwood crawled out through the window. She had a cut on the right side of her face. Her lovely face became very pale. Along with two of her friends, who’d also managed to free themselves, she ran for her life.

But halfway down the street, she realized that her best friend, Azarria Simmons, was not with them. Norwood ran back to the car and found Simmons lying in the back seat. “She isn’t moving,” Norwood shouted, with her heart beating hard. She threw open the back door and pulled her friend out, avoiding the broken glass as best she could. She dragged Simmons a few feet to safety and laid her on the ground. She checked per pulse. Nothing. She put her head against Simmons’s chest. No sign of life. That’s when she started CPR(心肺复苏术)

“It’s been potatoes all week, mom! Can’t we go to the diner for a burger and an ice cream? That’s all I want for my birthday!” Eve’s 8-year-old threw his little arms around her shoulders and looked at her with puppy eyes. In her heart, she wanted to hold Dylan the biggest birthday party ever. But in reality, she could afford none of that after being let go from the third temporary job.

When Dylan saw tears rising in his mother’s eyes, he quickly changed his tone. The boy had seen her working hard to make ends meet and could not bear to hurt her. “Actually, mom, that potato salad looks delicious!” he said gently.

After the meal, the mother and son took a nap (小睡) that afternoon. But Dylan didn’t fall asleep and had something else in mind. While his mother was asleep, he carefully took out an envelope from his little pot. His mother didn’t know this, but he had saved a few dollars from the lunch money she had given him over the past few years.

He counted the money in the pot. “$28!” Dylan’s eyes lit up. “I’m sure we can get a good meal for $28!” He carried the money and left the house secretly. He took a short walk to the next block, where he almost cried with excitement as he saw the food truck that he had expected.

“Sir! Please give me everything I can get for $28!” the boy said cheerfully. But Martin, the owner of the food truck, frowned and replied, “I’m so sorry, kid. We’re out of everything!” “It’s my birthday, and I can’t even treat my mother to a nice meal. She does so much for me...I thought, for once, I would do something nice for her...” The boy kept talking out loud to himself, giving in to his urge to cry.
