He was fifteen years old and still on his father's farm. He loved his father. When he heard these words, something in him spoke: his father loved him! He had never thought of it before, taking the tie of their blood for granted. Now that he knew his father loved him, he got up, stumbling blind with sleep and pulled on his clothes.
And then on the night before Christmas, that year when he was fifteen, he lay for a few minutes thinking about the next day. He wished he had a better present for his father instead of the usual tie from the ten - cent store. He lay on his side and looked out of his attic window.
A thought struck him like a silver dagger. Why should he not give his father a special gift, out there in the barn (畜棚)? He could get up early, earlier than four O'clock, and he could creep into the barn and get all the milking done. He laughed to himself as he gazed at the stars. It was what he would do, and he mustn't sleep too soundly.

My mother brought me to the hospice two days after my request. My grandfather and two of my aunts were there as well, but all hung back in the hallway as I entered Nana’s room. She was sitting in a big, soft chair next to her bed, eyes shut, mouth hanging open. The medicine was keeping her asleep. My eyes darted（看）around the room at the windows, the flowers, and the way Nana looked. I was struggling very hard to take it all in, knowing that this would be the last time I ever saw her alive.

The next day was even worse.
Everything was peaceful until the evening. It all started when Max put the dirty clothes in the washing machine. After some time, Kevin heard some strange sounds from the washing machine. He went to check and found that Max had put his best pair of shoes into the machine, along with the clothes.
One day, Kevin was looking through the newspaper when some interesting news caught his attention. He read it aloud: “The world-famous philatelist (集邮家) Dick Brown’s stamps were stolen last week from his house. Several other stamp robberies also have taken place, and police suspect that all the robberies are linked.”
This piece of news concluded by warning all stamp collectors to keep their stamps safe.

He started doing this and stuck firmly to his schedule. So one day when he had not returned by 8:30 am, my wife, Qaisa, phoned me in a panic. Worried, I immediately drove home, taking the same route that my father would have taken for his walk.
Not spotting him anywhere, I went to the police station to report my father’s disappearance. The station house officer advised me to wait until midnight before filling the report. Since it was only 10 am, I drove back to the park, in the hope of discovering some trace, but in vain. Totally at a loss for what to do next, I returned home and waited impatiently, walking back and forth in the house.
