1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

“Next Friday we’ll have the annual Egg Drop Challenge. The challenge is simple — you have to build a protective container to keep an egg from breaking when dropped over the stadium wall.” said Mr. Beal.

Cassie and I grinned at each other. Always working on projects together, we’re perfect combination. She’s brainy while I am creative.

While waiting for Cassie to come over and work on the container, I made my favorite sandwich with the fluffy marshmallow (棉花糖) cream. That gave me an idea: We can put some marshmallow cream under the egg as a cushion.

I later told Cassie about it. But Cassie wasn’t interested. “I got a better idea. We put the egg in a basket with a parachute attached.” She said.

“It will never work.” I said.

“And Marshmallow cream will?” Cassie rolled her eyes. “The parachute is better than that stupid idea.”

I couldn’t believe it. She never called my idea “stupid” before. “Then I will build mine and you build yours, and we’ll just see whose is better.”

“Fine!” Cassie stormed out. And just like that, our friendship was smashed, like an egg dropped from the top of a stadium without marshmallow cream to protect it.

When Friday arrived, I saw Cassie’s Egg Force One. She had a handkerchief to create a small parachute. It was tied to a basket and, in the center of it, her egg.

My Egg-cellent Egg Cream didn’t look quite scientific. I used a layer of marshmallow cream and a layer of jelly (果冻) to support the egg.

The competition started. Everyone in my class carried their egg containers up three stadium steps and dropped them over the side wall. If your egg broke, you were out. If the egg survived, you had to walk up three more steps and drop it again. This went on until the last egg broke.

By the fourth launch, only Cassie and I were left.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文.

A little boy almost thought of himself as the unluckiest child in the world because poliomyelitis (小儿麻痹症)made him unable to walk like normal people. He seldom played with his classmates, and when the teacher asked him to answer questions, he always lowered his head without a word.

One spring, the boy's father asked for some young trees from the neighbor. He wanted to plant them in the front of the house. He told his children to plant a tree each person. The father said to the children, "Whose tree grows best, I will buy him or her a favorite gift" The boy also wanted to get his father's gift. But seeing his brothers and sisters carrying water to water the trees happily, he had a terrible idea: he hoped the tree he planted would die soon. So he never attended to it.

A few days later, when the little boy went to see his tree again, he was surprised to find it not only didn't die, but also grew some fresh leaves, and compared with the trees of his brother and sister, his appeared greener and more vital. His father kept his promise, bought the little boy his favorite gift and said to him, "from the tree you planted, you will become a great person when you grow up."

3 . 阅读下面短文,根据内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Not everyone is lucky and can claim that they share a great relationship with their own parents. As you age, your points of view on life may greatly differ from those of your parents. Due to the generation gap, there is a huge possibility of misunderstandings between parents and children. All these can lead to conflicts. So what can you do to get along well with your parents as a teenager?

First, make sure that your behavior is responsible and mature. Carry out the duties your parents have assigned to you. If you complete your daily chores on time, you will realize your parents don't blame you so much! Don't go out of the way to do something which your parents have forbidden you from doing.

As you enter your mid-teens, you will realize you want to be independent, from choosing what to eat for breakfast, to buying your clothes, and making new friends. This change is going to cause a conflict between you and your parents. Keep in mind that parents will not agree to your decisions right away. You will feel you have controlling parents, and that there is no way out of the situation. To avoid further conflicts, talk to them. Hear them out. It's the best way to solve a lot of problems. In addition, calm yourself down when conflicts occur. It might take some time for your parents to realize that their little kid is growing up and is entitled to his or her own opinions.

Make it a point to talk to your parents every day about your school life, friends, your day-to-day activities, your teachers, just about anything. If you're stressed about any problem at school, discuss it with your parents. They are the best people to help you out and deal with it.

In a word, love and respect your parents for what they are and everything they've done for you, and no doubt, they'll in turn respect you for turning into responsible adults.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使其构成一篇完整的短文。

My parents were deaf, so I grew up living in two worlds, our private world and the “hearing” world outside. Unlike my mother, my father was deaf because of the fever when he was at school age. Even so, Daddy Ben was undefeated. He transformed pain into humor. “It is better to laugh at life,” he'd say. “It makes easier a hard time.” I began to understand what he meant one evening when my mother signaled to me to phone a message to my father at the shop where he worked. I went to a pay phone nearby and dialed the number.

“I have a message for a man called Ben. He is my father,” I told the man who answered.

“I don't know any Ben here.” The man was impatient.

“He's deaf” I explained.

“Oh, you mean the Dummy. Why didn't you say that before?”

I don't remember the rest of that conversation. All I remember is the word dummy. I had heard my parents described as deaf-and-dumb all through my childhood. I always took pains to explain that although they were deaf, they were not dumb.

“Why do you let your boss call you Dummy?” I asked my father the next day.

He shrugged. “It is easier for them. They remember me.”

I was angry. “You are not a dummy. You are a smart man. Tell them your name is Benjamin.”

He smiled. “It is all right. I know I am not dummy. I listen with my eyes and that is enough.” Locked in stillness, he was pleased with himself. But I was not.

Dummy, I wrote the hateful word many times in my notebook, tore out the page and crumpled it into a ball. My father saw my anger. “Don't worry,” he said in a harsh voice. “I will improve my speaking every day. I will learn new words, and you, Ruth, are my teacher. You are my dictionary. And don't waste your sweet voice. Ask your teachers if you have questions.” I hugged him.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

At dinner, Holly was talking about her father's huge car. It used too much petrol. It made too much noise. And it caused too much pollution.

“You have to change it, Dad,” Holly said. “It's destroying the environment.” “Actually, I'm thinking of working from home, so I won't need the car.” “That's great!”

Her father looked quickly at his wife, then decided to continue, “But I'm going to build a new office at the end of the garden.”

“At the end of the garden? There is the old oak tree...”   Holly didn't finish the sentence. Her face turned white with anger.

Holly's mother said, “That tree is very old, Holly. And your father can have his hew office there. It's perfect.”

Holly was so upset. She couldn't believe this was happening. What could she do? They were going to cut down her tree!

She walked out into the garden. The sun was sinking now and the old oak tree was huge and dark against the sky. She climbed up the rope ladder and disappeared among the leaves and branches.

Now she was inside her old tree house. It was her favourite place in the world, her secret place. There were holes in its roof and there were old birds' nests in the comers. But there was a little chair, some broken toys and some blankets. She sat down and looked out at the garden and the sky. She could see the moon and stars. She could hear a bird singing. She could see the lights inside her house.

I was 8 years old. I had little need of luggage. But something about that old leather suitcase appealed to my imagination. In fact, I found it in my grandmother's attic. Grams didn't object, and so the suitcase came to live beneath my bed. I didn't use the old suitcase before that day.

It was a cloudy fall morning in our North Carolina town, and a fine mist wet the fallen leaves. I was angry. My mother had slighted me somehow, though now I have no idea what stirred up my anger. I was upset, and I wanted to make her pay. I wanted to give her a taste of what life would be like without me.

I would run away.

“Goodbye, Mom.”

I stood outside the kitchen door, suitcase grabbed firmly in hand. I wore my red overcoat and gray ski cap, looking the part. “Goodbye, Mom,” I repeated twice more to make sure she'd heard.

At last, Mom appeared, wiping her hands on a dish towel. She looked at me quickly. I lifted the suitcase a little just to make sure she didn't miss it.

“I'm leaving,” I said.

I'd rehearsed for the expected reaction. The plan was to let her feel guilty and beg for a minute or two and then I would give in after I was sure of her regret.

“Did you pack a lunch?”

Mom's question knocked me off balance. Where were the tears? The begging? "I'm leaving," I said. "I'm running away. For... ever." I repeated, sure it would change her mind. Instead, she smiled.

“Well, would you like me to fix you something? A sandwich? A bag of chips? I just made chocolate chip cookies.”

“I'm really going," I said. “I can see that.”

“Maybe a cookie.” And then, “All right, I'm off” The misty rain lent drama to my journey.

7 . 请阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Sometimes I really doubt whether there is love between my parents. Every day they are very busy trying to earn money in order to pay the high tuition for my brother and me. They don't act in the romantic ways that I read in books or I see on TV. In their opinion, “I love you” is too luxurious for them to say. Sending flowers to each other on Valentine's Day is even more out of the question. Finally, my father has a bad temper. When he's very tired from the hard work, it is easy for him to lose his temper.

One day my mother was sewing a quilt. I silently sat down beside her and looked at her.

“Mom, I have a question to ask you,”I said after a while.

“What?” she replied, still doing her work.

“Is there love between you and dad?” I asked her in a very low voice.

My mother stopped her work and raised her head with surprise in her eyes. She did not answer immediately. Then she bowed her head and continued to sew the quilt.

I was very worried because I thought I had hurt her. I was in a great embarrassment and I did not know what I should do. But at last I heard my mother say the following words.

“Susan,” she said thoughtfully, “Look at these thread. Sometimes it appears but most of it disappears in the quilt. The thread really makes them quite strong and durable (持久的)。If life is a quilt, then love should be a thread. It can hardly be seen anywhere or anytime, but it's really there. Love is inside.

I couldn’t stop thinking about watermelons. I’d saved all y money to buy one. One giant, juicy   wonderful watermelon all for me. I was going to eat it all up, for the seeds.

At the store I searched carefully, looking for the biggest, juiciest, and most wonderful one I could find. There it was. I picked up my dream watermelon and put it on the floor. I rolled my treasure to the checkout line and waited for the cashier to weigh. Fifteen pounds!

After   paying,I rolled it out the door , then along the sidewalk, three blocks to my house. Sweat fell in drops from my forehead onto the watermelon. in drops from my forehead onto the watermelon.

"Lucy! What are you doing with that watermelon?" Mom asked in surprise.

“I saved   up my money and bought it at the grocery store. I’m going to eating it all by myself.”

Mom frowned, and warned, “You'll get sick.”

"Please,” I begged. “I've been saving all my money for it.”

Mom thought for a while, and then smiled meaningfully as if she knew something. She asked me to roll my giant, juicy, wonderful watermelon out the back door to our picnic table in the yard. She brought out a knife and some paper plates. My sister followed her.“Oh,watermelon,"she exclaimed with joy. “I want some.”

“Sorry,”I told her. “I'm going to eat it all by myself.”“Mom!” she cried, deep disappointment in her eyes.

“Your sister saved her money and bought it herself. She decides what to do with it.”

My brother came out next.“Watermelon! Can I have some?” he asked eagerly.“No way,"I refused him without hesitation. “I'm going to eat it all by myself.” “Mom!” my brother protested loudly.

“It's your sister's watermelon. She decides.”

“You can't eat that all by yourself," he challenged.

“Yes,I can!”I declared firmly.

My father came out. “Oh,watermelon!” he said, seeing it.

"Don't even ask,”said my brother.

9 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

John was waiting for the girl whose heart he knew, but whose face he didn’t. Thirteen months ago, in a Florida library he took a book randomly off the shelf and took great interest in the notes in the margin (页边空白). The further he read, the more intrigued (着迷) he was by the notes. The soft handwriting reflected a thoughtful soul and insightful and profound mind. John couldn’t help picturing in his mind what kind of people the owner would be.

In front of the book, he discovered the previous owner’s name, Miss Hollis Maynell. With extreme delight, he couldn’t contain his curiosity and spared a lot of time and effort to locate her address. Eventually and fortunately, all the efforts paid off, He wrote her a letter without any hesitation introducing himself and inviting her to respond.

During the following years the two grew to know each other through the mail, exchanging ideas covering all aspects ranging from classic works to current events, which brightened each other’s life handsomely. John once requested a photograph, but she refused. She felt that if he really cared, it wouldn’t matter what she looked like. Later they scheduled their first meeting--7: 00 pm at Grand Central Station in New York. “You’ll recognize me,” she wrote, “by the red rose I’ll be wearing on my lapel (翻领).” So at 7: 00 he was in the station looking for the girl with the red rose.

A girl in a green suit was coming toward him, and she has black hair pulled tightly into a knot at the back of her head, her figure long and slim and her eyes amazingly charming blue, which quickened his heartbeat. Almost uncontrollably he made one step closer to her, with a strong voice yelling at the bottom of his heart but didn’t spot the red rose on her lapel. It was just at this moment that he saw Hollis Maynell---a woman well past 40, with a bright-colored rose on her coat. The girl was walking quickly away.
