Sam and I had been paired up through a mentoring(辅导)program when he was a first grader. As a former teacher, I missed making an impact on young people, so as soon as I heard of this program for at-risk school kids, I signed up.

At first, it didn't seem as if the two of us were a good match. Sam hardly looked at me; he barely spoke or smiled. I tried everything to engage him. Nothing worked. Week after week. I'd drive 30 minutes to the school, only to sit with a little boy who didn't seem to care whether I was there or not. I was so frustrated (受挫的).

One day, I noticed Sam wearing an Iron Man shirt. The next week, I brought a board game (棋盘游戏)featuring Iron Man characters. When I opened the box, his eyes up. He dove right in and played the game with me. As I was leaving that day, he looked up at me and said, “See you next week, ’’

He and I built our relationship from there. I would spend his Friday lunch period with him, talking, playing games and just being a friend. Little by little, he opened up to me about his home life. His dad wasn't around. His mother supported the family by working nights at a local factory, so Sam's older sibling took care of him most of the time.

Right then and there , I wished to make sure the two of us always kept in touch — even after the program ended. Now it would be our last Friday lunch together. How could I make sure we had a great meal and he would still remember me?

So I looked for some inspiration for the perfect gift for him. A gift Sam would enjoy holding on to. On Wednesday, I was watching TV and a fast-food restaurant commercial came on, advertising the toy that came in the kids' meals — a small Iron Man toy.

Terry and Anna are a lovely couple living in Australia. They have been together for almost a year and are ready to take the next step together.

He made the main piece of the necklace out of Tasmanian wood, which is a high-quality ornamental timber (木材)used for making furniture and cabinets, as well as other small objects. It was the perfect material for a necklace. That wasn't all. Terry had hidden something within the necklace. This took a lot of time to make sure it was concealed properly. He then purchased a chain and put the two together to make a necklace.

Terry took Anna out to a lovely dinner for the anniversary. After the dinner , he took his handmade necklace out and presented it to her. Anna loved the necklace so much that she put it on as soon as she got it and never took it off again.

Anna and Terry loved traveling together, but Anna was always afraid of flying, and living in Australia provided her with the opportunity to find great vacation destinations that didn't require her to fly. However, Terry wasn't content with traveling in Australia. Though incredibly afraid of flying, Anna decided to face her fear and take a flight.

The couple decided to take a trip to Scotland. They were eager to see the country and explore everything it would offer. Anna was especially excited, as she would have an opportunity to see a friend that she hadn't seen for years.

The woman told him about the man following her, but suddenly they saw that man falling down on the ground. They ran at him and saw that he was the same man whom they caught a few days ago.

Mama's bank account

Every Saturday night Mama would sit down by the kitchen table and count out the money Papa had brought home.

“ For the rent.” Mama would count out the big silver pieces.

“ For the groceries.” Another group of coins.

“I'll need a notebook.” That would be my sister Christine, my brother Nels or me.

Mama would put one or two coins to the side. We would watch with anxious interest. At last, Papa would ask, “Is that al!" And when Mama nodded, we could relax a little. Mama would look up and smile, “Good. We do not have to go to the Bank.” We were all so proud of Mama's Bank Account. It gave us such a warm, secure feeling.

When Nels graduated from grammar school, he wanted to go on to high school. “It will cost a little money,” he said.

Eagerly we gathered around the table. I took down a box and laid it carefully in front of Mama. This was the “Little Bank”. It was used for sudden emergencies, such as the time when Christine broke her arm and had to be taken to a doctor.

Nels listed the costs of the things he would need. Mama counted out the money in the Little bank. There was not enough. “We do not want to go to the Bank,” she reminded. We all shook our heads.

“I will work in Dilon's grocery after school,” Nels volunteered.

Mama gave him a bright smile and wrote down a number. “That's not enough,” Papa said. Then he took his pipe out of his mouth and looked at it for a long time. “I will give up smoking,” he said suddenly.

Mama reached across the table and touched Papa's arm. Then she wrote down another figure.

“I will look after the Elvington children every Friday night,” I said. “Christine can help me.”

Now there was enough money. We all felt very good because we did not have to go downtown and draw money out of Mama's Bank Account. I often dreamed of adding some money to the Bank Account someday. And that was twenty years ago.

8 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。续写的词数应为150词 左右。

Carter enjoyed riding the school bus home. The ride home gave him some time to relax after a busy day of fifth grade. He usually sat alone, and he enjoyed that too. With four siblings(兄弟姐妹)he didn't get much alone time.

The bus stopped and the tallest boy in his class, Dexter Fisher, stepped off followed by his younger brother, Billy. Their house was the last stop before Carter's house. As the bus pulled away, Carter looked back over his shoulder to watch the boys. Dexter was yelling and waving his hands at his little brother. Billy said something Carter could not hear. Dexter yelled something and gave his younger brother a hard shove (猛推)and knocked him to the ground.

Carter leaned toward the window to get a better view. Billy was still on the ground and Dexter was walking away. Carter watched as Billy wiped at his eyes. The poor kid was crying.

Carter turned in his seat. He felt nauseous (恶心的).He hated seeing little kids get picked on. It just wasn't right. The sight of Billy on the ground crying was burned into his memory. He tried to think of something else.

He thought of the model car he was working on at home, a 1967 Corvette. He started building it over a week ago and just finished putting it together last night. Tonight, as soon as he finished his homework, he could start painting the car. That was his favorite part. He already had the perfect color of blue picked out.

He hurried off the bus, ran through his yard, and breezed through the kitchen with a quick hello to his mom. She was making spaghetti. His favorite. It smelled delicious.

He ran up the stairs two at a time and rushed into his room.

“Surprise!” his brother Jackson said, throwing his arms into the air.

Carter looked down at his desk in horror. His Corvette! Jackson had painted it red. An awful dull shade of red that didn't look good on a car at all. Like the color of Dad's tractor!

9 . 阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要.

People have a complicated relationship with failure. While the basic idea of learning from failure is supported by evidence, most people fear it for their kids. No parent wants to see their children fail. Failing hurts. It is hard to see your daughter pour her heart into studying for a Math test, only to get a C. You want your children to succeed, but most of all you don't want to see them suffer.

The world often sees children as a reflection of their parents. The common belief is that when your teen fails, it reflects poorly on you. No one wants to be judged. As a result, parents slowly take over the responsibility of "managing" academics, athletics and relationships to prevent failure and pain.

But failure is a part of growing. Even though you have the best intentions, you have to let your kids fail. Teaching your children about failure changes your relationship from a "Responsible for" mindset (心态) to one of "Responsible to." Rather than feeling responsible for your daughter and her actions, you feel responsible to teach and let her deal with the situation.

Feeling "responsible for" children's actions can lead to parents overcompensating(过度补偿) for real or potential weaknesses. Skills like conflict solution, problem-solving and dealing with authority figures are important development markers for teenagers. When parents overcompensate for children's weaknesses they rob teens of opportunities to improve developmental skills.

Feeling "responsible to" teach and guide children allows parents to create space for failure and challenges. Teenagers can then use this space to perfect these important developmental skills. Over time, the weaknesses become strengths. When your children fail, you don't have to lower your standards for your kids, but you may have to change expectations. Remember, when you feel responsible to give your children more freedom, it changes how you deal with failure. Failure becomes a stepping stone to success rather than something to be avoided.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Everyone likes the beautiful Cinderella, but I like the ugly stepsister. The sidewalk was filled with shoppers as my mother and I hurried to the department store. I raised my neck for a look at the holiday window display, but at the age of six I was too small to see around the grown-ups with their winter coats and packages. When at last we reached the store, I stood with my eyes widened. “Look, Mother,” I shouted, pressing my hands against the glass, “Cinderella.” Before my eyes was the most beautiful doll I had ever seen! She wore a fairy princess suit made of shining red silk. I knew if I lifted her skirt I would find her crystal(水晶) shoes. The tiny tiara (冠状头饰) fastened to her silky golden hair shone.

“If only she were mine,” I dreamed. “We’d have tea parties, share secrets and dance with a handsome prince.” But to my disappointment, my mother guided me away from the window, explaining that she and my father could not afford such an expensive doll. “But there will be a very special gift under the tree for you on Christmas morning, Madge,” she said. “I promise.” Later that week I leaned against Mother’s sewing machine, watching the needle flash up and down. “Bet you don’t know what this is!” she joked, holding up the cloth for me to see. “My Christmas doll!” I yelled. It was still in the early stages but I could make out the head, neck and body. “So much to my surprise!” Mother laughed as I danced around the room, already pretending Cinderella and I were at the ball. It wouldn’t be long now.

My excitement grew with each passing day. Mother continued to work on the doll, and whenever I walked into the room she would hide it under a pillow. I could tell by her smile she was pleased with her progress. On Christmas morning I jumped out of bed, ran down the hall and quickly arrived at the living room where the Christmas tree was placed.

2.请按下列格式作答。
There, underneath the tree, was a beautifully packed gift box.
