2 . Toxic positivity is the belief that no matter how difficult a situation is, people should maintain a positive mindset. This attitude doesn’t just stress the importance of optimism, it minimizes and denies any negative emotions. We all know that having a positive attitude is good for your mental well-being.
Toxic positivity can take a wide variety of forms. For example, when something bad happens, such as losing your job, people tell you to “just stay positive” or “look on the bright side.”
If you’ve been affected by toxic positivity, there are things that you can do to avoid it.
Be realistic about what you should feel. When you are facing a stressful situation, it’s normal to feel stressed, worried, or even fearful. Don’t expect too much from yourself. Focus on self-care and taking steps to improve your situation.
It’s okay to feel more than one thing. If you are facing a challenge, it’s possible to feel nervous about the future and also hopeful that you will succeed.
Focus on listening to others and showing support. When someone expresses a difficult emotion, don’t shut them down with toxic words.
A.Such comments are often meant to be comforting. |
B.But the problem is that life isn’t always positive. |
C.Your emotions are as complex as the situation itself. |
D.Manage your negative emotions, but don’t deny them. |
E.And it’s your own fault for not “choosing to be happy”. |
F.Pay attention to how you feel after receiving such comments. |
G.Instead, let them know such feelings are normal and that you are there to listen. |
3 . When I was a little girl, every time my dad was repairing something, he would ask me to hold the hammer. And so we would have a time for a conversation.
I grew up and left home for college and since then, my dad had been calling me every Sunday morning. And when several years later I bought a house, my dad went to paint it by himself for three days in the summer heat.
Four years ago, my dad was visiting me. He spent hours putting together a swing set (秋千) for my daughter. He asked to bring him a cup of tea and have a talk with him.
One Sunday morning we had a telephone talk as usual. I was in a hurry, so our conversation was short.
After his death I learned much more about him, and even more about myself. All he ever asked me was my time.

B.But I had to prepare for a trip that weekend. |

8 . When we are young we are taught that it’s wrong to lie and we should always tell the truth. Unfortunately, most children lie even if they’re told not to. Research carried out at the Institute of Child Study at Toronto Univercity has shown that this might not be such a bad thing. Apparently (显然地), children who tell lies when they’re two years old have a good chance of becoming successful adults (成年人).
According to the research, at the age of two, 20 per cent of children lie. At the age of three, 50 per cent lie, and at four almost 90 per cent lie. By the age of 12 almost every child tells lies.
Lying needs much brain work, and the better the lie is, the more work the brain has to do. By training the brain early, researchers believe children will be able to think more clearly when they are adults.
Recent research, carried out by the Science Museum in London, has shown some interesting facts about the way we lie as adults. According to the research, the average British man tells three lies every day; that’s over 1,000 lies a year. However, the average woman apparently only lies twice a day.
Most people think women are better liars (说谎者) than men although in fact they tell fewer lies. Popular women’s lies include ‘Nothing’s wrong, I’m fine’, ‘I don’t know where it is, I haven’t touched it’, and ‘It wasn’t that expensive’.
Some people say you can lie as long as it’s a white lie. A white lie is a lie told to avoid hurting someone’s feelings. One of the most common lies for both men and women is ‘It’s just what I’ve always wanted’, said after opening a present from their partner.
