文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了如何不过度情绪化的有效方式。

1 . How to Be Less Emotional

Being overly emotional may mean reacting to feelings like anger, sadness and fear quickly instead of letting all of your intelligence weigh in. Chances are, if you feel overly emotional you are relating to your emotions in a way that isn't always constructive.     1

Identify emotions. It's important to know what you feel so you can adequately address each emotion appropriately.     2     If you feel anger, for instance, you may start to notice your breathing quickening, your muscles tensing, or your skin feeling flushed. If you're happy, you may notice smiling or feelings of lightness in your body.

3     They can help calm you down when you're experiencing overwhelming emotions. If you're feeling overwhelmed by emotional intensity, pause to focus on your breathing. Breathing techniques can help you manage your emotions more effectively and help you handle intense emotions better. You may notice that as you experience intense emotions, they bring you further from experiencing yourself and your body.

Monitor your expectations. Sometimes, the way you feel may be influenced by how you expect to feel.     4     If you notice yourself placing expectations on how you “should” feel, hold off on making that judgment until you've completed the situation. Or, you may consider which situations you want to enter into beforehand.

Adjust your routines to reduce stress. Think about what events trigger your strong emotions, and try to either avoid them or control your response. For instance, if you tend to get anxious because you often run late for work, adjust your morning routine so you are not rushing.     5

A.Cope with your emotions.
B.Practice breathing techniques.
C.However, it's important to learn to regulate your emotions.
D.If you feel anxious, you may notice you burn a lot of emotional energy worrying.
E.Start to reflect on how your body feels when you notice an emotion coming through.
F.If there is a group of people that bring out lots of unpleasant emotions, decrease your time with them.
G.For instance, if you expect that watching a movie may make you sad, you may end up feeling sad.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文,主要通过作者自身的经历和Tracy Dennis Tiwary的经历讲述了焦虑并不一定是坏事。

2 . I am an anxious traveller. I arrive at airports and train stations extra early. I double-check all of my documents, feeling a tightness in my jaw and a slight clench in my stomach until I’ve arrived where I’m going. I used to feel bad about it, seeing it as absurd and weak. However, I’ve learned to respect my tendency to be cautious.

Recently, I was driving along a rural road at the start of a long trip that would mainly be on a large motorway. I began feeling that something could go wrong. What if I run out of petrol? I worried, even though I still had plenty. So when I spied a petrol station just before the road I was going to take onto the motorway, I decided to fill up. Just in case. And that’s when I discovered that one of my front tyres was flat. If I’d overpowered my unease, talked down my anxiety, the tyre would have blown at speed on the motorway. My urge to plan ahead even though it wasn’t strictly necessary saved me from a potentially catastrophic scenario.

A growing number of psychologists and neuroscientists agree anxiety and other negative feelings have a role to play in our lives. Tracy Dennis Tiwary, who recently published Future Tense: Why Anxiety Is Good for You, thinks our culture goes overboard in demonising(妖魔化) difficult emotions. She knows what it’s like to get overwhelmed by anxiety. “I remember a period at work when there was a lot going on. Worries kept waking me up at 4 am. It was like a yucky cloud of free-floating anxiety,” she says.

Instead of trying to repress this uneasy feeling, however, Dennis Tiwary leaned into it. She recognized the niggling thing, gave it space and learned from it. Finally she wrote down two or three things she could do to address it. The next morning, she felt calmer.

2. What did the author find when he decided to fill up?
A.The gas was used up.B.His unease disappeared.
C.He was caught in a crash.D.Something was wrong with his car.
3. What is Dennis Tiwary’s opinion about difficult emotions?
A.They should be ignored.B.They are crucial to success.
C.They can be beneficial to our lives.D.They are disturbing and evil.
4. How did Dennis Tiwary deal with her anxiety?
A.She sought professional help and solved her anxiety.
B.She rejected being anxious and focused on her work.
C.She embraced her anxiety and tried her best to face it.
D.She was immersed in pain and resigned to calm down.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。主要讲述的是在疫情期间,在Montclair 的一位母亲Peralte发起一项名为“旅行日记”的活动,吸引了很多女性参加。

3 . Kyra Peralte thought keeping a diary during the pandemic (流行病) might help her sort out her feelings. In April 2020, the mother of two in Montclair, New Jersey, now 46, started writing about the challenges of work, marriage and motherhood during a global crisis. She invited women from near and far to fill the notebook with their own pandemic tales. She named the project The Traveling Diary.

Peralte created a website for people to add their names to the queue. Each person gets to keep the diary for three days and fill as many pages as she wishes. Then she is responsible for mailing it to the next person, whose address Peralte provides. So far, more than 2, 000 women from 30 countries have joined in.

The diary reached Colleen Martin in Florham Park, New Jersey, in November 2020. “I had just recently lost my brother. By the time I actually got it and wrote in it, it was much more of a relief,” she says. Adding to the diary, she says, helped her look for meaning and “the growth and development that occurs in terrible times.”

Martin shipped off the diary to the next person, and Dior Sarr, 35, received it at her home in Toronto just before the new year. “I wrote about my ambitions(抱负), my goals and how I wanted to step into the new year, ” she says, “It felt meaningful to pass on something so personal. It felt like these were women that I had known even though I didn’t know them at all.”

Like many of the women who wrote in her diary, Peralte feels a strong bond with the people who filled its pages, none of whom she would have otherwise known. Her idea, Peralte says, has had a great effect on her and, she hopes, the other women who were part of it.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

David Ballesteros looked at the lawyer. He couldn’t believe his ears. The lawyer told him that his father left the 1923 Singer sewing machine (缝纫机) to him. It once belonged to his great-grandmother and his father considered it his greatest treasure.“That’s very nice,”David said.“But what else? What about the legacy (遗产)? The money? What does it all amount to?”

The lawyer, Mr. Jarvin, put down the will. He felt sorry for David but he thought David’s father had explained the terms of the will before he died. David remembered that his father just told him he’d be passing on his riches, but he never specified the amount — that was what he was trying to find out!

Mr. Jarvin said carefully,“David, no money at all.”“That’s impossible!” David screamed. His father owned clothing factories all over the United States. He was rich! Mr. Jarvin explained that all the money was donated to charity under the terms of his father’s will.

David was reeling (晕头转向) from the shock. He’d lived a life of wealth and now he was left with nothing but an old sewing machine! Mr. Jarvin said to David that his father left him a letter which may explain his decision. David grabbed the envelope. His father’s decision was to leave him a poor man! What kind of explanation could he possibly have for that! He drove back to his apartment just in time to see a van (厢式送货车) pull up.

“Mr. David Ballesteros?”asked the man from the van.“Yes,” David said.“We have a delivery for you, sir.”He gestured to the old sewing machine.“Where would you like it?”David was about to scream“In the trash (垃圾桶)!”but it occurred to him that the old item might be worth some money, so he ordered the man to take it up to his apartment. After the man left, David poured himself a drink and looked at the sewing machine.“I have an MBA. I’m prepared to run companies. What am I supposed to do with a sewing machine, Dad?”he asked aloud.
