文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了提高工作中情绪自我管理能力的四个方法。

1 . One of the cores of emotional intelligence is self-regulation, an important skill in the workplace. Like any skill, mastery of emotional self-control requires intentionality and practice.     1    .

Pause to Mentally Distance

When you notice your typical physiological experiences associated with strong negative emotion, what should you do? Mentally step out of your immediate experience. Asking yourself any question, or imagining what you might look like to others right now, will do the trick. At that point, although still physiologically keyed up, you will be able to ask yourself, “What is the best course of action right now?” or “What advice would I give someone else who is in my shoes?”     2    .

Take Control of Your Self-Talk

We’re frequently unaware of how much self-chatter is going on in the background of our minds. Such self-talk might not be in fully articulated (铰接式的) words or phrases, but instead little flashes of thought. Becoming aware of your self-talk can be difficult. Why is this an important skill to develop?     3    . To genuinely ease a strong negative emotion requires tackling the source by examining the underlying belief and how accurate, reasonable, or useful it is.

Seek Support from Partners

Ask others you trust to help you recognize when your emotions seem to be getting the best of you.     4    . Agree on a gesture or word that might serve as a signal that your trusted individual wonders whether you’re riding the led-by-your-limbic-system train. Of course, there will be times they’re wrong. So, it’s important not to respond defensively when you get that signal. Reacting with anything other than gratitude ensures that your partner won’t take that risk again.

Cultivate (培养) Curiosity

Our brains are wired to draw conclusions and form judgments at lightning speed, and those are frequently the cause of our negative emotions.     5    , but we tend to run with them, sparking the self-talk that follows. Generally working to be more curious about other people’s experiences, including their self-identified motives for their behavior, helps avoid making hasty judgments.

A.They are comfortable with all emotions
B.Those judgments are not necessarily accurate
C.Doing so provides you with choices as to how to act
D.Explain your developmental goals and sincerely ask for help
E.Stay focused on coming up with an answer and following through on it
F.Because it is those background beliefs that fuel our emotional responses
G.Here are four ways you can develop greater emotional self-management

2 . How to calm your teen

A major source of teen stress is school exams, and test anxiety is not uncommon. When you recognize your teen is under stress, how can you help your teen stay calm before an exam?

Be involved. Parents need to be involved in their teen’s study.     1     What he looks for is your presence — to talk, to cry, or simply to sit with him quietly. Communicate openly with your teen. Encourage your teen to express his worries and fears, but don’t let him focus on those fears.

Help him get organized.     2     Together, you and your teen can work out a timetable in which he can study for what he knows will be on the test.

Provide a calm setting. Help your teen set up a quiet place to study and protect his privacy.

Give him a nutritious diet. It’s important for your teen to eat a healthy, balanced diet during exam time to focus and do his best.     3     If this happens, encourage your teen to eat light meals or sandwiches. A healthy diet, rather than junk food, is best for reducing stress.

4     Persuade your teen to get some sleep or do something active when he needs a real break from studying. Making time for relaxation, fun, and exercise is important in reducing stress. Help your teen balance his time so that he will feel comfortable taking time out from studying to spend time with friends or rest.

Show a positive attitude.     5     Your panic, anxiety and blame contribute to your teen’s pressure. Make your teen feel accepted and valued for his efforts. Most importantly, reassure (使安心) your teen that things will be all right, no matter what the results are.

A.Encourage your teen to relax.
B.The best thing is simply to listen.
C.They will only make the situation worse.
D.Parents’ attitude will influence their teen’s emotions.
E.Exam stress can make some teens have no desire for food.
F.Your teen may also make negative comments about himself.
G.Help your teen think about what he has to study and plan accordingly.

3 . We’ve all heard the expression, “Money doesn’t buy happiness.” Since happiness is a side effect of laughter, shift your focus from the secret of happiness to experiences that bring you laughter. Instead of asking yourself “How can I be happy?”, ask “What makes me laugh?” This approach creates space for more actionable practices.     1

•Look at the situation through a child’s eyes.

When times get stressful, take a moment to think about how you saw things as a kid. The more we can experience that childlike wonder and enthusiasm, the less we sweat even the big stuff.

•Add laughter to your mornings.

2     Therefore, laughter should be right up there with brushing your teeth on your priority list. If you’re short on time, kill two birds and brush your teeth to a funny YouTube clip (短视频)!

•Learn to laugh at yourself.

Relieving yourself of pressure is the joy of learning to laugh at yourself. It also allows you to show more of your true self.     3     And set an intention to find humor in hardship. Merely laughing will fight off depression and fill you with light.

    4

There is no better way to practice laughing at yourself than going outside your comfort zone. From learning German to taking up rollerblading and Zumba, plenty of new activities will fuel your laughter. With so many ways to laugh more, why wait for your bit of happiness?     5     A bit of laughter can be the best medicine!

A.Hang out with friends.
B.Take up something new.
C.Permit yourself to be silly.
D.Morning routines set the tone for the entire day.
E.Read on four ways to get your daily amount of laughter.
F.Money doesn’t buy happiness but it can help us find happiness.
G.Instead, try any of the ideas above, and start feeling better now.

5 .     1

You have the ability to decide if you are happy or not. Happiness is a choice.

2    That is a lesson I learned in my marriage I realized I couldn’t rely on my husband as my source of happiness. I learned that you have to choose to be happy.

You can choose your emotions. True happiness comes from inside; it can’t be forced by outside forces.    3    You choose it because that’s what you want to experience in your life.

You want to buy a pair of shoes, so you choose a pair that you like and feel good. You wouldn't buy a pair that you don’t like or don’t fit well, right?

Choosing to be happy after you realize your anger has shown up (or even choose to be calm) can be beneficial.    4    No one can do it for you. If you let others get to influence our emotions, we are giving power over us.

Remember that we can always choose happiness. At first it will be difficult to just switch your thoughts and feelings from anger, self-doubt, or fear to joy and happiness. Don’t be lost in what happens to you unnecessarily but realize what is causing you to feel that way. Realize that thoughts, feelings and emotions can change.    5

A.Choosing to be happy
B.Choose Your Emotion
C.We choose our feelings
D.Then move on and choose to be happy.
E.It is the same way you choose to smile.
F.You can’t depend on someone else to make you happy.
G.One can’t rely on someone else to make himself or herself happy.

6 . It's no surprise that stress and anxiety are often viewed in a negative light, but Lisa Damour, a private-practice psychologist, suggests they're not always bad for us. She claims that a little bit of both can help build mental resilience and these experiences can sometimes benefit us.

Damour explained how stress often occurs when people operate at the edge of their abilities - when they push themselves or are forced by situations to stretch beyond their familiar limits. This can result from both bad and good events, she said. For instance, being fired is stressful, but so is bringing a baby home for the first time. She described how stress is unavoidable in daily life and that medium levels of stress “can have an inoculating function”, which can lead to “higher than average resilience” when we face new difficulties.

“Anxiety gets an unnecessarily bad comment,” she said, “Anxiety is an alarm system inside the body, likely handed down by evolution, which informs us of threats from both outside, such as a driver turning aside suddenly, and inside, such as when we've wasted too much time and it's time to get started on a task.”

Viewing anxiety as sometimes helpful or even protective allows people to make good use of it, suggests Damour. For example, she often tells the teenagers she works with in her practice to pay attention if they start to feel anxious at a party because their nerves may be warning them of a problem.

1. When do people feel stressed according to Damour?
A.They have much work to do.B.They lose their favorite things.
C.They deal with different situations.D.They're engaged in doing unfamiliar things.
2. What does the underlined word “inoculating” probably mean in paragraph 2?
A.Unexpected.B.Unbearable.C.Positive.D.Determining.
3. What's the purpose of paragraph 3?
A.To explain the reason for being anxious.B.To demonstrate the benefits of anxiety.
C.To state the risk of being anxious.D.To present the solution to anxiety.
4. What does the text mainly talk about?
A.Stress and anxiety aren't always bad.B.Stress and anxiety are part of our lives.
C.We should focus on positive things in life.D.We should deal with stress and anxiety carefully.

10 . Everybody is afraid of something. That’s what more than 1,700 kids told us when we asked them about fears and scary stuff. We gave kids a list of 14 scary things and asked which one frightened them most. Here are the top 5 answers from our survey (调查):① Scary movies and TV shows;②Scary dreams;③Thunderstorms,hurricanes(飓风);and other horrible weather;④War and terrorism (恐怖行动);⑤Sounds heard at night.

But not everyone is afraid of the same thing. And what makes one person scared can be of no big deal for someone else. Plenty of kids said their biggest fear wasn’t on our list.

What is fear?

Fear is a feeling that everyone has—it’s programmed into all of us—and that’s a good thing because fear is there to protect us. We’re born with a sense of fear so we can react to something that could be dangerous. The baby cries, and their mom comes over to comfort him or her, helping the baby feel safe and OK again.

Real vs. Pretend

The best way to get over a fear is to get more information about it. As kids get older, they understand more and start seeing the difference between what is real and unreal. So when William’s imagination leads him to think of witches,he can tell himself,“Wait a minute. They’re only pretend things. I don’t need to worry about them.”

The same goes for the dark. A kid’s imagination can start playing tricks when the lights go out. What’s under my bed?Is that a thief I hear? With the help of a parent, kids can get more comfortable in the dark. Using a nightlight or shining a flashlight under the bed to see that there’s nothing there can help kids fight that fear.

1. What did the writer find out from the survey?
A.Some people have never experienced fear.
B.Kids don’t like watching scary movies.
C.All people are afraid of something.
D.People often cry loudly when they are scared.
2. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The list of fears is not complete.
B.The things people fear are of no big deal.
C.Kids have more fears than people think.
D.People are afraid of different things.
3. In the writer’s opinion,________.
A.having a sense of fear is not a bad thing
B.babies have a weak sense of fear
C.fear is not something that we are born with
D.not all people can react to dangerous things
