2 . Through several measures, Sunifia, a brand in outdoor clothing, is actively supporting a circular model of clothing. It encourages people to share, resell, repair, and reuse their clothes, producing less waste.

Every second, one garbage truck of clothes is sent to the landfill or is burned, according to a report by the Ellen Macarthur Foundation. Sunifia is taking this alarming data seriously.

A few years ago, the fashion brand opened an independent online store, which is a collection of renewed clothing where people resell their old clothes for cash or store credits and shop for second-hand goods. Now Sunifia is including a “buy used” option on their website, offering pre-loved clothes alongside their newest designs.

Other chains, for example, Macy’s, have also used the new circular economy business model. Famous traditional businesses are also becoming used clothing providers, and are changing the way pre-loved clothes are sold and viewed. Even the shoppers, who used to be doubtful, are now open to the idea of buying used quality items. As a result, it is no surprise that the total secondhand market is projected to grow to almost twice the size of fast fashion by 2029, as seen in the report by thredUP.

Naturally, the most sustainable piece of clothing is the one that already exists. This “green” article of clothing doesn’t require using natural resources. It saves clothes from ending up in landfills, and it requires no plastic packaging.

According to a 2018 report by thredUP, buying a piece of used clothing increases its life on average by 2.2 years, which reduces its carbon, waste, and water footprint by 73 percent. So even though the development of innovative materials and processes in fashion seems promising, wearing secondhand clothes is the easiest and most immediate way to face the environmental challenges the fashion industry brings.

Action like Sunifia’s Buy Used initiative shows responsibility towards the environment and also encourages other companies to produce high-quality items that last for years. Buying second-hand clothes makes it possible to get the same great quality expected from leading brands at a more affordable price, and increases the lifetime of clothing.

1. Why did Sunifia open an online store?
A.To know people’s shopping habits better.B.To play its part in environment protection.
C.To help people reduce spending on clothes.D.To build up a collection of pre-loved clothes.

A.The second-hand direction is here to stay.B.Sunifia has set a good example to others.
C.Businesses affect people’s shopping habits.D.The second-hand market’s growth is unexpected.
3. What’s the author’s suggestion for the fashion industry?
A.Encouraging innovation in cloth.B.Taking advantage of pre-loved clothes.
C.Reducing the use of plastic packaging.D.Improving the process of making clothes.
4. What lesson can we learn from the text?
A.Fashion comes full circle.B.Everyone must do his part.
C.Waste could be turned into treasure.D.Necessity is the mother of invention.

3 . COVID herd immunity (群体免疫) will not happen in 2021

World Health Organization (WHO) chief scientist Soumya Swaminathan said Monday that herd immunity to coronavirus would not be achieved in 2021, despite the growing availability of vaccines (疫苗产量).

Factors that delay herd immunity include limited access to vaccines in developing countries, skepticism (怀疑) over vaccination, and the potential for virus mutations (变异), according to health experts.

A growing number of countries around the world, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Germany and other European Union countries, are in the first stages of mass-vaccination campaigns.

Herd immunity occurs when enough people in a population have immunity to an infection so that it prevents the disease from spreading.

“We are not going to achieve any levels of population immunity or herd immunity in 2021,”

Swaminathan told a briefing, while emphasizing that measures like physical distancing, hand washing and mask wearing continue to be necessary in containing COVID’s spread for the rest of the year.

However, Swaminathan praised the “incredible progress” made by vaccine researchers to develop several safe and effective vaccines at unprecedented speed. Countries are currently administering vaccines developed by BioNTech-Pfizer, Oxford University/AstraZeneca and Moderna.

“The vaccines are going to come,” she said. “They are going to go to all countries ... but meanwhile we mustn’t forget that there are measures that work,” she added, referring to hygiene and social distancing.

“We won’t get back to normal quickly,” Dale Fisher, chairman of the WHO’s Outbreak Alert and Response Network, told a conference hosted by Reuters news agency. “We know we need to get to herd immunity and we need that in a majority of countries, but we are not going to see that in 2021,” Fisher said. “There might be some countries that might achieve it but even then that will not create ‘normal’ especially in terms of border controls,” he added.

1. As for the first stages of mass-vaccination campaigns, which country is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A.Germany.B.Vietnam.
C.Singapore.D.the United Kingdom.
2. Which of the following are NOT the factors that delay herd immunity?
A.People are skeptical about vaccination.
B.Access to vaccines in developing countries is limited.
C.Virus mutations are likely to happen.
D.A growing number of countries begin mass-vaccination campaigns.
3. What is the attitude of Swaminathan to the progress of vaccine development?
A.Unclear.B.Negative.
C.Positive.D.Indifferent.
4. What can we learn from what Fisher said?
A.There maybe a long way to get to herd immunity all over the world.
B.If some countries might achieve herd immunity, people will live a ‘normal’ life
C.In terms of good border controls, we can achieve herd immunity.
D.In many countries in 2021, people will live a ‘normal’ life in terms of border controls.

4 . You may know the English letters A, B and C. But do you know there are people called ABC? You may like eating bananas. But do you know there are such people with the name of   "banana person"? How strange! Are these people from "another planet"? No. They are just Chinese people like you and me.

ABC means American—born—Chinese. An ABC is a Chinese, but was born in the United States. Sometimes, people call an ABC a "banana person". A banana is yellow outside and white inside. So, a “banana person” is white inside--thinking like a Westerner and yellow outside-looking like a Chinese.

Do you know why? Usually, ABCs know little about China or the Chinese language. Some of them do not speak Chinese. Also, they are not interested in Chinese politics. But if ABC cannot speak Chinese, can we still call them Chinese people? Yes, of course. They are Chinese. They are overseas Chinese. These people may be citizens of another country, like the US, England or

Canada, but they have Chinese blood. Their parents, grandparents or even great-grandparents were from China. They all have black eyes and black hair. But they are not Chinese citizens. They are not people of the People's Republic of China. For example, we all know the famous scientist C.N.Yang. He got the Noble Prize in 1957. Chinese people love him. But he is an American citizen.

1. Chinese in Western countries are called "banana persons" because _________
A.their bodies are white inside but yellow outside
B.they think like westerners but look like Chinese
C.they were born in China but go to study in American
D.they were born in American but work in China
2. The underlined word “ blood ” may probably means _________ in the passage.
A.blood relationshipB.a large water flow
C.blood sampleD.lose blood from one’s body
3. C.N.Yang is mentioned here to show that _________.

5 . Have you ever paid for educational podcasts (播客) or live videos? Ask some people and most of them will say yes. “Pay-for-knowledge” has been more and more fashionable these years. The contents of these “pay-for-knowledge” products are from language learning to gardening or baby-caring. Everything you think of can be found online at this moment. “Pay-for-knowledge” is on the rise (兴起).

Why is “pay-for-knowledge” industry developing so rapidly? First, its development is based on the Internet. With a fast network and a smartphone, anyone who has passed the identity(身份)check can be an online teacher, and anyone with an online account can buy “pay-for-knowledge” products that he or she wants at an affordable price. Second, people are afraid to miss any information. On one hand, people hope for more useful information.

On the other hand, such information is usually at the hands of experts (专家) who serve well-known companies and universities. Moreover, the need to learn new skills in today's job market also pushes people to learn on such educational podcasts.

The industry of “pay-for-knowledge” has proved to be lucrative. It promises possibilities of turning information into money. It is good for the development of our country and it can help sellers make lots of money. Besides ,buyers can enjoy self-growth from it. What's more, this is a reflection (反映) of respect for knowledge and talents.

However, the rapid development of “pay-for-knowledge” has a few problems. For one thing, the market is full of eye-catching words such as “How to be an Industry's Expert in 5 Hours” and “15 Classes to Be a Master of Appreciating (欣赏) Classical Music”, which sound like if you pay for it, you are sure to succeed. For another, a large number of customers buy them just for showing off. In fact, those who have really had self-growth after buying online courses may be the kind of people who need them least. In other words, with or without these courses, they can make it anyway, because they are those who have the ability to learn by themselves.

In general, the best is the one that suits you most. “Pay-for-knowledge” may be used as a good start for self-growth. Be careful! Otherwise, your dream of success may not come true.

1. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

6 . There are around 100 tribes(部落) that live in isolation(隔绝), mostly in South America and India. The Sentinelese lived on one of the Andaman Islands in Eastern India for 60,000 years. They protect their island by fighting against people from outside. Their language is different from any other known language. Another Andaman tribe is the Jarawa. In the past, they were independent and fought against anybody trying to make contact with them. But in 1998, the Indian government built a road across their land, and since then, they’ve had more contact with the outside world.

Some Amazon tribes avoid contact because of unhappy memories. The Mashco-Piro left their vegetable gardens after rubber companies killed most of their tribe at the beginning of the 20th century. Those who survived became nomadic(游牧的) and started hunting animals in the forest.

The Awa live in the Amazon forests of Brazil. Out of 350 members, 100 have no contact with the outside world. They left their villages and adopted a nomadic lifestyle around 1850 to prevent being attacked by Europeans. In the following years, farmers in nearby communities started cutting the trees to expand their farmland. The Awa lost most of their hunting land. The few Amazon tribes that still exist are fighting to keep their traditional way of life.

Survival, an organization that fights for the rights of tribal people, says that uncontracted tribes are the most vulnerable(弱势的) humans on the planet and that’s why their environment should be closed to the rest of us. After years of pressure, the organization got Brazil’s government to clear non-natives from the Awa land. All non-Awa people are leaving, so the tribe can get their forest back.

But some think it’s impossible for tribes to stay isolated forever in a connected world. Contact will be made one day. So the question is: Whose choice should it be, ours or theirs?

1. What can we learn about the Sentinelese from the first paragraph?
A.They refused contact from the outside world.
B.They speak the same language as the Jarawa.
C.They are crazy about fighting with other tribes.
D.They have got help from the Indian government.
2. Why did the Awa choose a nomadic lifestyle?
A.To protect their hunting land.B.To search for food sources.
C.To avoid threats from Europeans.D.To keep their original way of life.
3. Which of the following would Survival probably agree with?
A.The tribes should be left unaffected by the outside world.
B.The tribes should fight for more living space.
C.The tribes should live in harmony with nature.
D.The tribes should follow the connected world.
4. What can be the best title for the text?
A.The Nomadic Tribes in the World.B.Seeking Survival of Tribes.
C.The Closed Tribal Environment.D.Protecting the Tribal Forests.

7 . Joe Clark was a non-traditional high school principal, whose unusual way of carrying out rules became the subject of a 1989 Hollywood movie. He gained national attention for his leadership at Eastside High School in Paterson, New Jersey.

“You are not inferior.” is what Clark would often tell his students, many of whom were African American or Latino. They grew up in a difficult environment and faced violence, drugs and troubled family life which could prevent them from succeeding in school and in life.

Before becoming an educator, Clark served in the U.S. Amy Reserve. His experience might have influenced how he ran his school. He was known to walk around with a bull horn and a baseball bat. In Clark's first days of working, he expelled 300 students for breaking school rules. The students who remained at school believed that higher expectations were being placed on them. They felt more pressure to perform better.

Some praised his efforts at discipline while others criticized his methods. President Ronald Reagan offered Clark a White House policy adviser position after his success at the high school. In 1988, one teacher, said his methods were more like being in a labor camp than a public high school. In 1989, actor Morgan Freeman played Clark in the movie “Lean on Me.” That movie was based on Clark's experiences at Eastside. “Joe was a father figure to school kid,” Freeman said. “He was the best of the best in terms of education.” Recently, one of Joe Clark's former students, Thomas McEntyre said, “I never really got a chance to... thank him. We are your product. You did not fail us. No matter whether you kicked me out, you did not fail me. You bettered me."

After he retired from Eastside in 1989, Clark wrote a book called “Laying Down the Law: Joe Clark's Strategy for Saving Our Schools.” He described how he managed to turn Eastside High from a failing school into a success.

1. By saying “You are not inferior” to his students, Joe Clark meant to_________.

8 . You are seated in class as your teacher explains and points things out on the white board. You accidentally dropped your pencil on the floor. As you lean over to pick up your pencil, your cell phone falls out of your coat pocket! Luckily you catch it without your teacher seeing, but it is in plain view of the video camera's shiny lens (镜头) that points straight at you. The classroom phone rings, and after a brief conversation, your teacher walks over to your desk and kneels down beside you. “About that cell phone of yours. …” How did that get you in trouble? How could it possibly be a good idea to put cameras in classrooms?

When students are in their classrooms, teachers are in the classroom too, usually. But when a teacher goes out of the classroom, what usually happens is either everything goes on as usual, or the students talk a little more. It is the teacher's job to keep people quiet. If something horrible happened, somebody in class would usually report it, or it would just be obvious to the teacher when he came back that something had happened.

If we already have cameras in the halls, why spend the money to get thirty more cameras for all the different classrooms? Our school district already has a low budget, so we would be spending money on something completely unnecessary.

Different students react differently when there is a camera in the room. Some students get nervous, trying hard to stay focused on their work with a camera focused on them. 90% of students say that they do better work when they are calmer, and cameras are not going to help. Other students look at cameras as a source of entertainment. These students will do things such as wave at the camera, make faces, or say hi to the people watching through the camera. This could be a big distraction for others who are trying to learn and participate in class.

Instead of solving problems, cameras would cause the problems. That is why I disagree with the idea of putting cameras in classrooms. This plan should not be put to action.

1. How does the author show his point of view in the first paragraph?
A.By analyzing the causes.B.By describing a scene.
C.By making a comparison.D.By trying an experiment.
2. What does the author think of putting cameras in classrooms?
A.It keeps everything in its usual state.
B.It is a waste of money and unnecessary.
C.It helps teachers watch over students' behavior.
D.It costs more than putting cameras in school halls.
3. How do video cameras in classrooms affect students?
A.They help students calm down.
B.They force students to learn more.
C.They make classes more lively and interesting.
D.They take students ' attention away from their study.

9 . British people work some of the longest hours in Europe, but are among the least productive. Now some companies are shortening the working week to increase efficiency, health and happiness.

Rich Leigh has introduced a four-day week at his PR company. In fact, his company has Friday off, because his firm has taken a four-day week. It is one of a handful of UK businesses that now operate like this: workers still get paid the same as their five-day salary, but they work a day less. The company found that they achieved just as much—and there were even signs of growth. “The key to the scheme’s success,” Leigh says, “is how happy our employees now are.”

The average British worker takes only a 34 minute lunch break and works 10 hours overtime each week (more often than not this is unpaid). Yet UK productivity falls seriously behind their European neighbors, who tend to work fewer hours.

British working practices have caused loss and damage to the nation’s health and happiness. More than half a million workers in the UK quit jobs with work-related stress or anxiety last year. Moreover, the working conditions are changing. Automation(自动化)and AI will have a significant impact on the labor market, where it’s a struggle to have regular work.

Britain is the only EU member that allows workers to ignore the EU working time limit and work longer hours. Now it is the time for a change. O’Grady, an advocate, argues that where businesses have increased their profits as a result of automation, success should be shared with workers in the form of reduced hours. “It’s time to share the benefits from new technology, not allowing those at the top to enjoy the benefits by themselves.” she says.

1. We can learn from the passage that ________.
A.British people are the least productive in the world
B.Most companies in Britain have performed a four-day week
C.PR company has seen a rise in employees’ happiness
D.British people work longer and get more payment than other countries
2. Which is the proper description of British working practices?
A.The working time of British workers is within the EU limit.
B.As to productivity, Britain is beaten by the United States.
C.Profits gained from new technology are on the decrease.
D.Automation and AI are likely to cause an irregular work market.
3. Which can be inferred from O’Grady’ s words in the last paragraph?
A.It’s time for employers to share the increased profits created by automation.
B.Workers should benefit from automation in the form of less working hours.
C.New technology should belong to both businesses and workers.
D.Businesses can’t make more profits without new technology.
4. What is the author’s purpose of writing the passage?
A.To introduce some British firms’ change to a four-day working week.
B.To explain the reasons why British workers suffer stress and anxiety.
C.To make a request for more reasonable working conditions.
D.To present the present productivity problem in Britain.

10 . There’s been a frightening increase in the number of people feeling lonely, brought on or made worse by COVID-19. In fact there’s been an epidemic (流行病)of loneliness.

Loneliness is awful and dangerous. For one thing it weakens self-control and that, University of Bristol researchers have found, makes quitting smoking very difficult. Moreover, data from hundreds of thousands of people led Dr. Robyn Wootton, senior research associate at Bristol University and colleagues to conclude that loneliness appears to increase the need to smoke.

According to the Office for National Statistics, the equivalent of 7.4 million people said their wellbeing was affected through feeling lonely in the first month of lockdown. Lonely people were also more likely to be struggling to find things that would help them cope and were also less likely to feel they had support networks to fall back on.

Dr. Robyn Wootton said, “We found evidence to suggest that loneliness leads to increased smoking, with people more likely to start smoking, to smoke more cigarettes and to be less likely to quit.” Senior author Dr. Jorien Treur from Amsterdam UMC added, “Our finding that smoking may also lead to more loneliness is tentative(不确定的), but it is in agreement with other recent studies that identified smoking as a risk factor for poor mental health. A potential explanation for this relationship is that nicotine from cigarette smoke has a great impact on neurotransmitters(神经传导物质)such as dopamine(多巴胺)in the brain.”

Dr. Wootton said with millions of people now being more socially separated, incidences of loneliness will climb. “We were really interested to find that loneliness decreases the likelihood of stopping smoking and we think this is a really important consideration for those trying to stop smoking during COVID-19,” she said. To ease your loneliness and improve your chances of succeeding in quitting, I think one of the best things you can do is to find a “buddy” who’ll try to give up smoking with you. Together you can compare notes, share progress, talk through difficulties, and encourage each other to keep on going when all you want is to give in.

1. What can we infer from paragraph 3?
A.Lonely people tend to seek something to deal with loneliness.
B.Lockdown do more damage to physical than mental health.
C.People suffering from loneliness often turn to others for help.
D.Self-control is the most important thing to overcome loneliness.
2. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Evidence.B.Smoking.
C.Loneliness.D.Finding.
3. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Millions of people failed the attempt to stop smoking.
B.A good way to stop smoking is to get a like-minded person.
C.Smoking is not advocated officially during COVID-19.
D.Those who want to quit smoking need to find good habits.
4. Which of the following could be the best title for the passage?
A.Health Problems Caused by COVID-19
B.Opinions on How to Give Up Smoking
C.Some Ways in Which Loneliness Harm You
D.Loneliness Makes it Hard to Quit Smoking
