1 . Tips for Submitting a Good Letter of Recommendation

If you consider applying for any colleges abroad, one of the most important parts is the recommendation letter. Its purpose is to give universities a complete picture of you.
    1
But a credible reference saying you've continuously worked hard on a project can be the difference between getting accepted or rejected.
Choose the right referee(推荐人)

Universities want to know how well you work under pressure and how you react to criticism, basically you characteristics, abilities and mentality. A good referee should have a solid professional relationship with you and be able to communicate your academic and personal strengths.     2

Most universities ask for two recommendation letters. They are regularly split between a school professor and an extracurricular source. Undoubtedly, it's good to show your skills in the subject you want to study.     3

Time

Professionals can sometimes find it hard to make time for writing recommendations.     4     So give them plenty of time and send them a link of your university's recommendation letter guidance page, if possible.

Clear goals

Don't be afraid to ask your referees to include certain qualities or examples you want to highlight. You should inform at least one of your referees about your career goals, grades and recent projects. They may not be referenced. But giving referees additional evidence to back up their points can make the letter more convincing.

5     It's where you can find what a university lays stress on, as well as some important information such as deadlines and so on.

A.Make sure you cite your referees' quotes.
B.You can write that you're hard-working yourself.
C.They can be quite occupied during application season.
D.The longer you letter is, the better it may be.
E.Don't forget to check each university's guidance on reference letters.
F.Examples of how you have demonstrated them are needed to add more credibility.
G.But other abilities that may not be apparent in the classroom can be equally valuable.

3 . First Aid

We all know how important human life is — it’s priceless. It doesn’t matter where you are from or what the colour of your skin is — all people are human beings. Firstly, we can tell you that the lives of your relatives could depend on your ability to give first aid.     1    , this website is for you! Here you can find information about first aid.

The very first thing that you should do when you see an accident is to evaluate the situation and prevent further dangerous incidents. First of all, you have to recognize what has happened and what the dangers to rescuers and victims are. Think about how to take care of the victims.

Helping usually takes place in very difficult conditions and injuries can be very bad.     2    . Sometimes you have to face the fact that regardless of your actions and your efforts the victim’s condition might not improve — he or she could even die.     3    . If you have done everything you think you should do, you shouldn’t feel guilty.

4    . Giving first aid can be dangerous. While trying to help a victim, do not forget about your own safety. If something happens to you, you won’t be able to help anyone.

5    . But remember if a victim faints due to breathing failure caused by drowning, choking or poisoning, you should first take actions that help to bring back the heart beat and breathing. While calling, talk briefly but clearly. Always provide the following information: the location of the accident, the kind of accident, the number of the injured and your full name and phone number and so on.

A.Therefore, you cannot be too afraid of making mistakes to help
B.If you think highly of human’s life
C.Because first aid is vital
D.Do not expose yourself to danger
E.Call for help after you find out the condition of a victim
F.In some cases even professional medical aid may not succeed
G.Be careful about whether or not to give first aid

4 . Loud noise can be very damaging to your hearing, whether it’s a loud burst or years of exposure. Approximately 15 percent of adults 18 years of age or older report some trouble hearing.     1     The good news is that taking action now may protect you from hearing loss later in life.

Get a baseline hearing test. Most people have never had a hearing test.     2     At your next physical, ask for a hearing test as part of your routine checkup. A hearing test gives your audiologist a baseline that they can compare with future results to monitor the progression of hearing loss.

3     While you are watching TV or using mobile devices, keep the volume at a comfortable level. It should be loud enough to make sure you can hear very well, but not so loud that when you leave the room, you can still hear it from another part of your home.

Wear protective hearing devices. Think ear protection before you’re exposed to any noisy environment, such as rock concerts or airports. When you are in a noisy environment, wear protective hearing devices such as earplugs or protective earphones.     4

Have proper earphones. If you often listen to music on earphones using a portable music or video device, it’s a good idea to have earphones that fit the unique shape of your ear canal, and block outside noise.     5

A.The risk rises as we age.
B.Monitor the volume of your devices.
C.However, it benefits you to go against that trend.
D.Meanwhile, you will find the sound truly superior.
E.You can find them at your local drugstore or music supply shop.
F.Think about buying appliances and devices that have low noise ratings.
G.You must do something to keep age-related hearing loss from getting worse.

5 . How to have an attractive personality

Demonstrating an attractive personality is key to making friends and having lasting relationships. These traits (特性) give you the ability to inspire and fascinate others, making others more drawn to you as a result.

Listen to others.     1     Instead of responding to a text, opening an email, or thinking about your next meal, pay attention to what the other person is saying. Show them you’re listening and interested by commenting on the story or asking questions.

Speak sincerely. No one likes to be cheated.     2     If you can’t commit to something, it’s better to be honest about it than to have to tell them at the last minute that you can’t make it. When people ask for your opinion, you should be honest.

3     You should always say what you believe in, be willing to take risks, and have the ability to admit your mistake without being worried about what other people will think. Doing this shows that you have self-confidence. This helps create an attractive personality.

Know “how” vs “what”. How you say things is arguably more important than what you say. If you try to give someone a genuine compliment, but he or she thinks you say it with a sarcastic undertone, your compliment won’t mean a thing.     4     If you notice that people often take things you say the wrong way, there’s a good chance you can change how you speak. Ask your friends to make you aware of the way you’re coming across.

Show enthusiasm for everything. Even if something makes you slightly uncomfortable, handle it with a smile on your face, an open mind, and a sense of humor. Not every day is going to be perfect, but being enthusiastic can help you accomplish anything.     5

A.Tell people the truth.
B.You may make things bad.
C.Be aware of the way you speak.
D.Have confidence in how you speak and act.
E.When you act this way, people will love being around you.
F.Asking questions is important when it comes to confidence.
G.Listening is a trait that is often forgotten in today’s society.

6 . Right at this moment, cockroaches (蟑螂) are doing more to save the environment than you are. A big overstatement? Not if you’ve ever thrown away leftovers from your plate or bought more food than you could manage to cook in a week. You’re part of the food waste problem. But just like cockroaches, you can also be part of the solution.

For example, some farmers in Asia and Africa collect tomatoes in big bags, which means that many of them get crushed out of shape and spoiled before they can be sold or eaten. Switching the bags for large wooden containers already lowers the amount of food lost. Similar successes can and have been achieved in various regions with weather-protected storage facilities.

Let’s focus on China for a second. It’s one of the few countries with an innovative approach to minimizing the environmental impact of food waste. How does it do it? Cockroaches. Millions of the tiny creatures are kept in farms in the suburban districts of big cities. Every morning, food waste is delivered by the tonnes and fed to the cockroaches. Just like tiny pigs, they’re not picky and devour everything quickly. After they die, they’re processed into protein-rich feed for animals such as cows or sheep, or used for cosmetic products and Chinese medicine. It’s an efficient and environmentally-friendly alternative to dumping leftover food in a landfill. Cockroaches aren’t going to solve the problem with food waste, but they can serve as an inspiration for finding other similar solutions on a wider scale.

To avoid food waste completely, improvements are needed at every step of the food supply chain, from production to retail. These take time and are often out of your hands as a consumer. But a meaningful reduction of food waste is definitely in your hands. You can not only buy less and shop more often, but also cut down on animal products.

What does the underlined word “devour” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Preserve.
B.Transform.
C.Grasp.
D.Swallow.

7 . According to a common saying, “Honesty is the best policy.” But in daily life, honesty can be difficult. Lying often seems like a good way to make people happy or avoid being punished for mistakes. Some people lie out of habit, without even realizing they’re doing it.     1

One obvious reason for honesty is that lies are difficult to maintain. There’s always a chance that the person you lied to will find out the truth. Is the advantage from lying really worth the risk?     2     If you make up a story, you have to remember all the details. And the more lies you tell, the more stories you have to remember. But if you tell the truth, you will never have trouble remembering. This saves you effort and makes conversations less stressful for you.

3     People who believe your lies might make bad decisions because of them. And a lie about someone else could destroy that person’s reputation. If your friends find out you lied to them, their feelings will be hurt. They will question whether they can trust you or wonder whether you care about them.     4     This will help you in every area of your life. Business deals, friendships, family and other relationships all depend on trust.

Honesty, however, doesn’t mean that you have to say everything you think.     5     Honesty means that when you speak, you tell the truth without holding any information back. When you do that, you will feel more relaxed and enjoy stronger relationships.

A.But despite all this, honesty is really worth the effort.
B.So in our life, we should avoid lying to win a good chance.
C.It means you only tell the truth, or white lies when necessary.
D.Another obvious reason to avoid lying is that lying can harm others.
E.Sometimes it’s best to remain silent if your words might hurt someone else.
F.Lies are also difficult to hide because they are harder to remember than the truth.
G.In contrast, if you always tell the truth, you will develop the reputation for honesty.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章旨在为读者提供购买电动汽车前需要了解的三个重要知识点。

10 . Is an electric vehicle right for you?

Many people will ask themselves that question for the first time this year. Prices are falling, battery range is rising and mainstream brands are adding new EVs at a breakneck pace.

Here are three things anybody seriously considering buying an EV should know:

1. The price to install a 240v charger

Anybody who owns an electric vehicle needs a 240-volt charger at home. With one, you can recharge overnight, so you start every day with the equivalent of a full tank.

Just a few years ago, home 240v EV chargers cost $2,500-$3,000, including installation, but prices have declined as competition grows with the number of EVs on the road.

2. The time it takes to charge

About 80% of miles driven in EVs are powered by electricity charged at home, but you’ll need to charge elsewhere occasionally. That’s when charging time becomes a big deal, but how long it takes depends on a couple of factors.

3. Where to charge

Good route-planning apps will help you find chargers on a road trip.

“Most people have no idea how many public charging stations are within, say, a 10-or 15-mile radius (半径) because they’re small, people don’t look for them or even don’t know what to look for, and they’re rarely signposted,” said journalist John Voelcker, who has studied EVs and charging exhaustively.

4. On the horizon

If an EV doesn’t meet your needs now, watch this space. They’re coming closer, but large numbers of gasoline vehicles will remain in production for years. Beyond that, companies will keep making spare parts for oil-burners for decades.

1. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Popular brands are introducing new EVs at an incredibly fast rate.
B.An electric vehicle can’t run the same distance as a completely filled fuel vehicle.
C.The price of installing a home EV charger has remained stable in the past few years.
D.It’s quite easy to identify the public charging stations with the help of striking signposts.
2. What should the potential consumers do in the future?
A.Make space for an EV.
B.Find an alternative to EV.
C.Give up the plan to purchase an EV.
D.Keep an eye out for future developments.
3. What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To illustrate the factors charging time depends on.
B.To offer advice on purchasing an electric vehicle.
C.To look forward to the future of electric vehicles.
D.To explain the reason for the falling prices of electric vehicles.
