1 . 选词填空

I’ve been writing for most of my life. The book Writing Without Teachers introduced me to one distinction and one practice that has helped my writing     1     greatly. The distinction is between the creative mind and the critical mind. While you need to employ both to get to a final result, they cannot work in     2     no matter how much we might like to think so.

Trying to criticize writing while it is still in progress is most possibly the single greatest

3     to writing that most of us meet with. If you are listening to that 5th grade English teacher correct your grammar while you are trying to seize a fleeting (稍纵即逝的) thought, the thought will die. If you capture the fleeting thought and simply share it with the world in raw form, no one is likely to understand. You must learn to     4     first and then criticize if you want to make writing the tool for thinking that it is.

The practice that can help you pass your     5     bad habits of trying to edit as you write is what Elbow calls “free writing”. In free writing, the     6     is to get words down on paper non-stop, usually for 15-20 minutes. No stopping, no going back, no criticizing. The goal is to get the words     7    . As the words begin to go smoothly, the ideas will come from the shadows and let themselves be     8     on your notepad or your screen.

Now you have raw materials that you can begin to work with using the critical mind that you’ve persuaded to sit on the side and watch quietly. Most likely, you will believe that this will take more time than you actually have and you will end up staring blankly at the pages as the deadline draws near.

Instead of staring at a blank screen, start filling it with words no matter how bad they are. Halfway through your     9     time, stop and rework your raw writing into something closer to a(n)     10     product. Move back and forth until you run out of time and the final result will most likely be far better than your current practices.

Things I’ve Learned From My First Year Of High School

I just finished my first year of high school, and it has been     1     different from middle school. High school has brought me so many different experiences. Some I am grateful for, yet some have not been beneficial. However, all of them have taught me so many different things, and I would not have been able to     2     my first year of high school without them. The things I have learned have been so helpful to me and can also     3     to things outside of school.

1. You’re expected to demonstrate maturity and responsibility

High school teachers won’t     4     “hold your hand” as much as middle school teachers did. Your teachers may move faster through lessons. When you have questions or meet with     5     challenges, it’s important to speak up. If speaking up makes you nervous at first, you can start by using email to build your     6     level and confidence.

High school teachers enforce higher standards, and most don’t tolerate some of the behaviors that were acceptable in middle school. Again, the goal is to prepare you for college and real life. Even if the     7     seems tough at first, remember that you’re learning helpful and important life skills.

2. Find out who your true friends are

Genuine friends are friends that you can tell everything to and they will not tell anyone else without your permission. They are also there whenever you need them, whether that is to rant or you just need a shoulder to cry on. When you find your true friends, stick with them. The thing about friends is: quality over     8    .

To be honest, high school is not easy at first, but with time, you will get to appreciate and     9     everything around your experiences. The memory will never     10    , because it is the most memorable journey. I have learned so much during my first year of high school, and I am sure that I am going to learn a lot more.

First aid is emergency care for a victim of sudden illness or injury until more skillful medical treatment is     1    . It may save a life or improve certain     2    signs including pulse, temperature, and breathing. First aid must be administered (执行) as quickly as possible. In the case of the critically injured, a few minutes can make the difference between complete recovery and loss of life.

First-aid     3    depend upon a victim’s needs and the provider’s level of knowledge and skill. Knowing what not to do in an emergency is as important as knowing what to do. For example,     4     moving a person with a neck injury can lead to permanent health problems.

Despite the     5    of injuries possible, several principles of first aid apply to all emergencies. The first step is to call for     6    medical help. The victim, if conscious, should be reassured (使安心) that medical aid has been requested, and asked for permission to     7    any first aid. Next, assess (评估) the scene, asking other people or the injured person’s family or friends about details of the injury or illness, any care that may have already been given, and     8    conditions such as heart trouble. Unless the accident scene becomes unsafe or the victim may suffer further injury, do not move the victim.

First aid requires rapid assessment of victims to determine whether     9     conditions exist. One method for evaluating a victim’s condition is known by the acronym ABC, which     10     for:

A – Airway: is it open and clear?

B – Breathing: is the person breathing? Look, listen and feel for breathing.

C – Circulation: is there a pulse? Is the person bleeding externally? Check skin color and temperature for additional indications of circulation problems.

With so much fake news online, it can sometimes be hard to figure out the truth. Concern about the phenomenon led some tech companies to     1     that they’ll crack down on fake news sites.

Fake news is a(n) common occurrence — you see it on your social media feeds, and even on forwarded messages on your phone’s group chat. There’s always one person in your group who likes to send     2     news from what can only be described as doubtful origins.

It was even named 2017’s word of the year by dictionary     3     , Collins, which describes fake news as “false, often sensational, information spread under the guise of news reporting”.

Here’s our advice on how to     4     a fake.

First, check the website and quality of the articles. Look at the     5     of the story and read other articles on the site — are they well written with proper citations or are they full of grammatical errors? You should also make sure that you’re on a legal news site. Some fake sites use     6     and even logos that are similar to those of real news organizations. For example, abcnews.go.com is real, while abenews.com. co is not.

Second, is it the whole truth and nothing but the truth? Sometimes a fake news story can have a sliver of truth to it, but most of the facts and figures are plotted from imagination. To make sure, search for the same story on several     7     websites to ensure nothing has been misrepresented.

Third, make sure it’s not satire (讽刺). If the story is on a satirical website, you should be aware that the     8     is humour and satire, and not misled

Being able to detect fake news is a crucial part of digital     9     and is an important aspect of life in the digital age. However, not all of the misinformation being passed along online is completely fictional, though some of it is. Snopes. com has been exposing false viral     10     since the mid-1990s, whether that’s fabricated (编造的) messages, distortions containing bits of truth and everything in between. Founder David Mikkelson warned in a Nov. 17 article not to sort everything into the “fake news” category. In one word, stay alert and objective.

Among the note-taking forms in today’s US schools, the Cornell method is widely recommended. Providing a form for concentrating and organizing notes, the Cornell method sets up a system to direct students to     1    the paper into two columns. The note-taking column, which is usually on the right, is twice the size of the key word column on the left. The student should leave five to seven lines blank, at the bottom of the page.

Notes from a lecture or teaching occupy the note-taking column which     2    contain the main ideas of the textbook or lecture. Most     3    ideas and long sentences are avoided while symbols or abbreviations (缩写)are preferred instead. To assist with future reviews,     4    thoughts or questions should be noted down as soon as possible so that the students may     5    to these points for reflection or further research. The key-word column is a suitable place to note down these ideas. These ideas may later turn into potential research results as students are always encouraged to reflect on the notes     6    or go deep into the questions further.

Within 24 hours after the note-taking, the student must revise and then produce a short summary in the bottom space. Such move helps him to understand the topic better. When preparing for a test, the student has     7    to a brief but detailed record of the previous classes.

Get rid of mosquitoes, but how?

Almost everyone who spends time outdoors has experienced mosquitoes. These bloodsucking insects give itchy bites and can spread disease. But how can you avoid them and protect yourself?

It may seem difficult to avoid mosquitoes, as most of the areas in the world are     3     populated with them. People who live near     4     of water, such as lakeside, may experience more mosquitoes. But there are several measures you can take to reduce their numbers.

Mosquitoes need less than a centimeter of water to lay eggs. A female can lay hundreds of eggs at a time. So, check your     5     to see if there is anywhere that collects water. Water can easily collect in small     6     —a child’s toy, a trash can lid, or a cooking pot.

Even if the amount of standing water seems small,     7     it. Make holes in the bottoms of containers that can hold     8     water. Other standing water such as in ponds and bird baths can be     9     with chemicals.

There are other things you can do to protect yourself. Put screens in your doors and windows or keep them closed. And cut down on time spent outdoors between the early evening and the early morning. Mosquitoes are most     10     during that time.

Camping wild is a wonderful way to experience the natural world and, at its best, it makes little environmental influence. But with     1     numbers of people wanting to escape into the wilderness, it is becoming more and more important to camp unobtrusively and leave no mark.

Wild camping is not permitted in many places,     2     in crowded lowland Britain. Whenever you are, find out about organizations     3     for managing wild spaces, and     4     them to find out their policy on camping and shelter building. For example, it is fine to camp wild in remote parts of Scotland, but in England you must ask the landowner's     5    , except in national park.

Camping is about having relaxation, sleeping outdoors,     6     bad weather, and making food without modern conveniences. A busy, fully-equipped campsite seems to go against this, so     7     out smaller, more remote places with easy     8     to open spaces and perhaps beaches. Better still, find a campsite with no road access: walking in makes a real adventure.

Finding the right spot to camp is the first step to     9     a good night's sleep. Choose a campsite with privacy and minimum influence on others and the environment. Try to use an area where people have     10     camped before rather than creating a new spot. Always consider what influence you might have on the natural world. Avoid damaging plants. A good campsite is found, not made-changing it should be unnecessary.
