The Cry of a Woman’s Heart
The poor children who attended our church-supported Christmas party feasted on Christmas foods, enjoyed wonderful shows and received various gifts from Santa. When all the children had gone, we breathed a sigh of relief with tiredness.
Pointing to the extra gifts left in Santa’s black bag, Jean asked, “What are we going to do with all these toys?” As we were lost in reflection, Bobbie said, “Remember the three sisters who were at the party? Why don’t we deliver the toys to their house on Monday while they are in school to give them a surprise?” Everyone agreed. Since I lived closest to the three little girls, I volunteered to deliver the gifts.
On Monday, I drove to their home, confident their mother would be there. As I got out of my car a small dog appeared. He barked (吠叫) loudly and followed dangerously close to me as I hurried to the front door. With one large bag of toys, I knocked on the door. No one answered. I knocked repeatedly for several minutes. Still no answer.
Disappointed, I said, “Okay, now what am I supposed to do? I can’t carry these presents around all day!”
Managing to stay a few steps ahead of the barking dog. I returned to my car. After I calmed down I remembered hearing one lady at the church mention some needy children, who didn’t attended the party, had no toys. They lived in a wooden house not far from where I sat.
As I approached that location, I saw three shabby (破损的) wooden houses side by side. “Oh, no,” I whispered. “How am I supposed to know which house is the right one?” I pulled into the large dirt yard shared by all three families. As I got out of the car, I thought to myself, “Well, I’ll try the middle one first.” I knocked on the door. As I prepared to knock again, the door opened halfway.

On my son Andrew's 15th birthday, I took him to a shoe shop near our home in Toronto to get a pair of shoes. Andrew is nonspeaking autistic (自闭症) and prefers to go shopping when it's not busy.
Andrew got new shoes for his 15th birthday. As we headed toward the door, I told the sales assistants it was Andrew's 15th birthday today. "Happy birthday and have fun," the sales assistants replied.
Instead of having Andrew point to the "thank you" symbol on the picture chart he carried with him, I paused and held up his letterboard.
For ten years, we have carried around a picture chart, which Andrew uses to communicate. It contains images that match his most important and most used words: people, places, food, greetings and activities. Over the years, neighbourhood kids, friends, cousins and classmates have studied the pictures and the strips at the top of the chart that contain even more "representations" of Andrew's life.
Years ago, we discovered that Andrew could communicate more than his basic needs through the use of a letterboard—by pointing to individual letters on an alphabet grid (网格) to spell out words. It's a simple but profound tool. We have attached a letterboard to the back of his picture chart to spare us the trouble of carrying multiple charts and boards.
Using the letterboard requires significant time and effort for Andrew, but we persevere (坚持) because we know it gives him an opportunity to share more of who he is than what can be conveyed through basic pictures and words.
And so, instead of rushing out of the shoe shop door. I held up the letterboard and asked Andrew how he'd like to respond.

After a moment of silent consideration, Andrew slowly pointed to the letters on the board.

She always goes above and beyond for her students, but what she did for Troy’s family is truly beyond selflessness but a miracle(奇迹).
Donna is one of those teachers who pay close attention to the students in their classroom. She began to notice something odd in one of her elementary students, Troy. He was not active in class like he had been. Troy used to be a passionate student in class, engaging with teachers and his friends. Being a helping hand to the teacher and classmates, Troy was always welcomed by everybody. However, he was all of a sudden so shut down and his behavior was simply not the same. He seemed to be silent all the time, and his eyes lost light of desire for knowledge and passion for any activities. Donna grew very concerned and wondered if there was something going on that affected his performance at school. So, she reached out to Troy’s mom to express her concerns.
And that was when she discovered something wrong. For the past year, his mom had been in stage-five kidney(肾)failure. She was in pain every day and desperately needed a new kidney. But she had a rare blood type, so finding a match for a kidney transplant was virtually impossible. Her condition had been a very long and anxious journey. It had been so painful for the family, and it had definitely made an impact on Troy. And in class, he had been silently carrying the pain his mom was going through at home.
The news broke Donna’s heart. She knew that she just had to do something. She was there as a loving friend to help Troy with his studies, but she was also there for his mom. Donna researched how to become a kidney donor and discovered that she had the same rare blood type as Troy’s mom. She got tested and, surprisingly, she was a match.

This fear could not be explained, but I knew that the moment I stepped near any body of water, my legs would turn to jelly (果冻). I would imagine myself drowning in the water and thrashing around (乱扑腾) helplessly. That was why I had never gone into a swimming pool until swimming became a school requirement. My school wanted all pupils to pass a swimming test, and if they could not, then they would have to attend weekly swimming lessons in school, which made me tremble.
Thus, my parents signed me up for swimming lessons at the pool near my house. With great unwillingness, I attended those weekly lessons, and each one was great suffering for me. I was naturally clumsy, and my fear of water did not help at all. Every lesson, I would be spending my time thrashing about in the water, while my classmates would be swimming countless laps effortlessly and even turning over like dolphins in the water. How was I going to pass the test at this rate?
In my swimming class, there was an exceptionally athletic girl. Tall and muscular, her name was Kathy. She was the best swimmer in our class and always looked at me with disdain (鄙视), especially when I thrashed about hopelessly in the water.
Once, after a particularly long and hard swimming lesson, I spotted Kathy swimming gracefully in the pool. Gathering my courage, I asked gently, “Kathy, can you teach me to swim?” She stared at me coldly. It was as if I stood at the edge of an endless ocean of inadequacy, my fears appearing like dark storm clouds threatening to drown me. Yet, in that moment, a glimmer of hope flashed within me, a desperate longing for guidance and acceptance. Would Kathy’s icy exterior (外表) melt under the warmth of empathy, or would I remain forever thrashing in the sea of my own fears?

Summer vacation had finally arrived, and David’s family were eagerly looking forward to their beach getaway. David, the youngest of four siblings (兄弟姐妹), couldn’t hold back his excitement as they packed their bags and loaded up the car. Little did he know, an unexpected turn of events would leave him alone at home.
As the family hurried around, getting ready for their trip, David quickly went back into the house to take his favorite book. But his careless dad didn’t realize that David hadn’t come back to the car yet. With a quick wave, the car pulled away, leaving David standing alone in the driveway.
Realizing he had been left behind, David’s first surprise quickly turned to fear. He tried his best to catch his family’s attention, but the loud car drowned out his shouts. With no other choice, he went back into the empty house, feeling abandoned and unsure of what to do next.
Hours passed, and David’s hunger grew as he anxiously waited for his family to return. His stomach growled loudly, a clear reminder of his situation. Just as he was about to give up hope, his phone rang. It was his mother, calling to see how he was doing.
David felt annoyed and mad as he answered the call. He couldn’t get why his family forgot about him. His mom sounded worried and sorry, but it didn’t really make him feel better. “David, I’m really sorry,” she said, “We didn’t know you weren’t in the car until it was too late. Please forgive us.”
Angry and depressed, David struggled to find the words to respond. But as he listened to his mother’s apology, a sense of determination began to take root within him. He realized that he couldn’t rely on others to take care of him — he had to learn to tend to himself.

My family had only recently moved into a new neighborhood. All of my neighbors have been very friendly and helpful since we moved in.
However, Mrs Davis, an elderly lady living in the last house on the other side of the road, escaped associating with us, or anyone else. When I asked around the neighborhood why, they warned me not to go after her because they thought she was insane (精神失常的) and preferred staying alone after losing her husband and only daughter in an aircraft crash. After that, she stayed isolated (孤立的) from all the neighbors, refusing all the care and help.
I often saw her on the streets during the evening, but she was always by herself. She appeared weak and I always wanted to help her, but after hearing what my neighbors had said about her, I wasn’t sure whether I should.
One day, when I was on my way to the supermarket, our paths crossed. I was walking past her and overheard her singing a tune. It immediately drew my attention because my parents used to sing the same song with me. I began to sing along with her, and she smiled at me for the first time. But when I smiled back, she quickly hurried her pace and went home.
She seemed very different to me that day. I refused to trust my neighbors’ claims that she had cut herself off from the rest of society because she was insane, so the next day, I knocked on her door. Mrs Davis was home, and instead of letting me in, she just looked at me silently through the window. I noticed her staring at me and was about to walk to the window when she quickly closed the curtains.
The next day, I revisited her house. “Hello, I brought you something,” I called out to her. “It’s the record of the music you were singing yesterday.”
