文章大意:这是一篇记叙文,文章主要讲述了92岁的Alfredo Aliaga成为完成大峡谷rim-to-rim徒步旅行的最年长的人。

3 . Exploring the Grand Canyon is an exciting experience at any age. For more experienced adventurers, the iconic rim (边缘)-to-rim hike provides awe-inspiring views and unforgettable memories. For one man, it also means breaking a record. At 92 years old, Alfredo Aliaga has become the oldest person to complete the Grand Canyon rim-to-rim hike.

The 24-mile trek (跋涉) is no easy job. Less than 1% of Grand Canyon visitors have completed it, and even park rangers (护林员) recommend training for at least a year before attempting to accomplish it. Aliaga, an experienced hiker who has crossed the Grand Canyon multiple times, prepared for it by walking for three hours every day around his home in Berlin.

Aliaga first trekked the Grand Canyon alongside his wife, with whom he shared his love for hikes and nature. After she died from ALS in 2006, he once again returned to the Grand Canyon. Since then, he has returned to the Grand Canyon so many times to remember his wife.

Before his latest attempt, his son-in-law, Jurgen Buchenau, made a Facebook post to look out for trekkers to help the family keep records of this history-making hike. “We’d love to document what we hope will be an awesome achievement. Alfredo last completed a R2R last year when he was 91 and has been hiking in the canyon five times in the last four years, so he’s going to be ready for this!”

On October 15, after hiking for 21 hours split over two days, Aliaga completed this massive achievement. “Alfredo did it!” Jurgen wrote on Facebook. “At 4 p.m. this afternoon, he climbed out of the canyon at the Bright Angel trailhead, super satisfied and excited to have become the oldest person on record to have crossed the canyon rim to rim at age 92.”

1. Why did Aliaga decide to do the rim-to-rim hike again?
A.To break a record.B.To challenge himself.
C.To recall his mate.D.To become a celebrity.
2. What did Jurgen Buchenau do for Aliaga?
A.He made a plan for the hike.B.He offered medical support.
C.He helped Aliaga train for the hike.D.He asked other hikers for assistance.

“No matter how hard we try, some things are just not meant to be,” Andrew thought bitterly. He looked down at the hospital bills in his hands and tears filled his eyes. His poor mom had been so ill, and here he was complaining and feeling sorry for himself! He should be praying for her recovery, not crying over a lost, childish dream.

Andrew was nineteen, and as far back as he could remember, he’d wanted to become a software engineer. That dream had become harder to reach after his dad died when Andrew was twelve. His mom had been left to raise him on her own, and it was hard to make ends meet. So Andrew started doing part-time jobs.

Every cent he earned he put away for college. When he was sixteen, he got himself a summer job at a local IT company, where his insight and intelligence caught the owner’s eye. Mr. Lewis, the CEO, made Andrew the assistant of his best and most innovative developer, and the boy thrived (不断成长) on the challenge. He couldn’t wait to go to college!

Unfortunately, when Andrew was in his senior year in high school, his mother became very ill. The usually energetic woman was constantly tired and in pain. She went from doctor to doctor, but no one knew exactly what was wrong with her. They sent her off to do dozens of expensive tests, then shook their heads over the results. Andrew’s mom started getting weaker and weaker, and thinner and thinner until she could barely walk.

Andrew added up the medical bills and was shocked. They owed over $23,000! Andrew pulled out his bank book. He had close to $30,000 in his savings account. He’d painstakingly (艰苦地) saved up for YEARS, so he’d be able to go to college, but his mom’s health was more important.

文章大意:本文是记叙文。文章讲述了一只名叫Pepper的狗在冬天湖边散步时不慎掉入冰洞,随后被消防员和救援人员成功营救的故事。

5 . It only takes one wrong step near a lake in the winter for disaster to happen. Pepper, the dog and his mom found that out the hard way.

The two of them were taking a morning walk in Chicago along Lake Michigan when Pepper, a 7-year-old dog, got free of its rope, slipped on some rocks, and fell onto the ice sheets of the lake. As Pepper tried to climb back up to his human owner, the ice around him broke, and he began floating (漂浮) away!

Since the water was so cold, Pepper should be saved as soon as possible. As Fire Deputy District Chief Jason Lach said, hypothermia (a serious medical condition caused by very low temperature) can start within several minutes. Thankfully, firefighters were already nearby practicing underwater ice dives.

Just 10 minutes later, 40 rescue (救援) workers arrived, along with fire department vehicles and a helicopter. By the time the officials in the helicopter noticed Pepper, he and his ice float were 500 feet out into the lake. Firefighter Chris Iverson dove into the water and swam out to Pepper. Chris calmed the dog down and tied him to a safety sling (吊索). Meanwhile, firefighter Emerson Branch swam out with a rapid deployment craft, which he and Chris used to bring Pepper safely to shore. The rescue only took about 15 minutes. When the firefighters reached dry land with Pepper, they dried him using a towel and played the pass-the-dog to get him back to his human owner.

Caretakers at Veterinary Emergency Group Hospital made sure Pepper was OK. But Jason hopes his rescue will be a lesson for others. “The dog was good, warmed up to its owner, and went on its happy way,” Jason said. “But stay off the ice. It’s never safe, …Step into a hole, and you’re out of sight.”

1. What happened to Pepper one morning?
A.He lost his owner.B.He was trapped in a lake.
C.He got missing suddenly.D.He was covered by ice sheets.
2. What seemed to be the first danger to Pepper?

3. What can we learn from Paragraph 4?

C.The rescue was highly effective.D.Pepper reacted calmly all the time.
4. What is Jason’s suggestion?
A.No going near the ice.B.No walking dogs by a hole.

For most people, adopting (收养) a pet is one of the best decisions that they can ever make in their lives. In addition to giving an animal a home and a loving family, the owner will find the company of a pet brings more happiness than expected.

For someone like Maria, having a pet was very suitable. She was all alone after moving to a new apartment in Brazil, which made her feel lonely.

So when she found a cute black puppy named Chips, she knew she had to take him home. Maria thought that Chips would be able to fill the emptiness that she had been experiencing from living all alone.

Maria was right. Once she took the puppy home, they immediately bonded. However, as Maria had to work during the day, she was worried about leaving Chips home alone in her apartment. She was also worried that his crying would upset her neighbors.

One night, when she returned home, outside her door was a package with a folded note attached to it. Maria knew that she was in trouble. She hoped that she would not be evicted (驱逐) from her new apartment because of Chips. She loved Chips so much, and she was afraid that she might have to get rid of him because he made too much noise whenever she was away. Maria was frightened and wondered who could have left it at the door because she had little contact with the people in the building except her neighbor, Angelia. In fact, they only said hello few times.

However, when she noticed the names on the folded note, she found that it wasn’t addressed to her but to her dog, Chips, and that it was “written” by another dog named Corote. Maria opened the package first and found a few toys for pets.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章主要描述了作者在睡谷与玛格丽特一起度过的一个愉快的下午。

8 . After leaving the book at Mr. Emerson’s, I returned through the woods. And entering SleepyHollow (睡谷), I found a lady lying near the road which bends along its verge (边缘). It was Margaret herself. She had been there the whole afternoon, reading and thinking deeply about something. She had a book in her hand, with a strange name, which I did not understand and have forgotten.

She said that nobody had broken her state of being alone, and was saying that nobody ever visited SleepyHollow when we saw a whole group of people entering the greatly respected area. Most of them followed a path which led them far from us. But an old man passed near us and smiled to see Margaret lying on the ground, and me sitting by her side. He made some remark about the beauty of the afternoon, and disappeared himself into the dark area of the wood.

Then we continued to talk about Autumn, the pleasures of getting lost in the woods, the black birds, whose voices Margaret had heard, the experiences of early childhood, whose influence remains upon the character after the remembering of them has passed away, the sight of mountains from a distance, and the view from their tops of mountains.

In the middle of our talk, we heard footsteps above us. While the visitor was still hidden among the trees, he called to Margaret, of whom he had seen. Then he walked out of the green forest. It was Mr. Emerson who had found no better way of spending Sunday than to walk among the woods. He appeared to have had a pleasant time, for he said that there were Muses (缪斯) in the woods today and very quiet voices to be heard in the light wind.

It being now nearly six o’clock, we said goodbye, Mr. Emerson and Margaret towards their home, and I towards mine, where my little wife was very busy getting tea.

1. What did Margaret stay to do in SleepyHollow for the whole afternoon?
A.To read a book.B.To play with water.
C.To enjoy herself.D.To chat with herself.
2. What did Margaret talk about together with the author?

A.Drinking tea.B.Staying at home.
C.Walking in the woods.D.Talking about interesting topics.

Single mother Krystal works hard to provide daily necessities for her kid. They may not have many material things. But love is clearly in no short supply.

Krystal was having a particularly tough time making ends meet. The bike she rode to work broke and couldn’t be used. But she couldn’t afford a new one. So she had to walk to work, spending an extra hour on the way. Once in a while, she would wonder whether there was hope in life. Her son, 13-year-old William Preston, couldn’t help but notice.

Seeing his mother work so hard to earn money, William, the sweet young man, was always helping his mother with housework. He didn’t want to see his mom walking to work every day. So, he decided he was going to do whatever it took to buy his mom another bike.

William saw on YouTube that a boy bought his mom a bike and then surprised her with it. He also wanted to do that. William came across a cheap used bike on sale on Facebook. And he knew what he needed to do to help out his struggling mom.

In fact, the 13-year-old has been doing yard work for people in his community to make some money. So, he continued to work hard and save money, which was impressive enough for someone his age. But William took it one step further.

Back in his own room, William was staring at the big box of toys that his relatives and friends had bought him as gifts. He treasured the toys. He spent most of his spare time playing with them. Among them was the game player Xbox, his most prized possession (财产). When his mother called him to have supper, he had an idea.

Long long ago, there was a little prince who was used to having everything he wanted. He was so badly behaved that he wouldn’t let anybody have a new toy if he didn’t have it first. If any child in the land wanted a new toy, they had to buy two and give one to him. Therefore, the little prince had no friends except for his toys.

One day a magic toymaker, who invented the most wonderful toys, came to the land. The little prince liked his toys so much that he invited him to spend an entire year in the palace, promising him great wealth if he made him a new toy every day. The toymaker set just one condition: “My toys are very special and need an owner who will play with them” he said. “Will you be able to devote a little time to each one every day?” “Of course, I will” the little prince replied impatiently.

From then on, every morning the little prince received a new toy. Every day the toymaker delivered a toy better than the previous ones. The little prince appeared very happy.

But the toy collection kept growing and, after a few weeks there were simply too many toys to play with all of them every day. So, one day the little prince put a few toys to one side, hoping that the toymaker wouldn’t notice. However, when it was night time and he was ready to go to bed. The toys that had been put away lined up in front of him and, one by one, demanded their daily playtime. The little prince couldn’t get to sleep until well past midnight because he had to play with every single toy.

Next day, tired after all his efforts, the prince slept very late. In the little time left of the day, he had to get to know a new toy and then play with all the others too. Once again, he finished very late and was so tired he could hardly stop yawning (打哈欠).
