I was always afraid of water. This fear could not be explained, but I knew that the moment I stepped near any body of water, my legs would turn to jelly (果冻). I would imagine myself drowning in the water and thrashing around (乱扑腾) helplessly. That was why I had never gone into a swimming pool until swimming became a school requirement. My school wanted all pupils to pass a swimming test, and if they could not, then they would have to attend weekly swimming lessons in school, which made me tremble.
Thus, my parents signed me up for swimming lessons at the pool near my house. With great unwillingness, I attended those weekly lessons, and each one was great suffering for me. I was naturally clumsy, and my fear of water did not help at all. Every lesson, I would be spending my time thrashing about in the water, while my classmates would be swimming countless laps effortlessly and even turning over like dolphins in the water. How was I going to pass the test at this rate?
In my swimming class, there was an exceptionally athletic girl. Tall and muscular, her name was Kathy. She was the best swimmer in our class and always looked at me with disdain (鄙视), especially when I thrashed about hopelessly in the water.
Once, after a particularly long and hard swimming lesson, I spotted Kathy swimming gracefully in the pool. Gathering my courage, I asked gently, “Kathy, can you teach me to swim?” She stared at me coldly. It was as if I stood at the edge of an endless ocean of inadequacy, my fears appearing like dark storm clouds threatening to drown me. Yet, in that moment, a glimmer of hope flashed within me, a desperate longing for guidance and acceptance. Would Kathy’s icy exterior (外表) melt under the warmth of empathy, or would I remain forever thrashing in the sea of my own fears?

A woman in Lakewood, Washington, wanted to find a boy who left $5 and a heartbreaking apology note on her doorstep. On Friday, Marie found this note from “Jake”:
“I am sorry that I took your butterfly wind chimes (风铃) without your permission. My mum died and she liked butterflies so I took them to put by our window. Now I feel terrible for my past behaviour. I am sorry. This is the only money I have. Please do not be mad at me.”
Mari e told KCPQ she was not mad and wanted to find Jake to return his $5. “I wanted to cry because apparently he felt bad for what he had done. And I think he might be scared,” she told the station. Marie said she knows stealing is immoral, but she is sympathetic to the child. “I’m not agreeing with the stealing act but he did try to make up for what he had done. I lost my mum at a young age so I really make sense of his feeling and know how hard it is,” she said.
Marie wanted to find Jake, not to punish him, but to return his money for his honesty. Marie moved to the neighbourhood two months ago and didn’t know many people there, which made tracking down Jake difficult.
In order to find the boy, she turned to Facebook. Almost a week later, her Facebook post got much attention from social media, but she still didn’t hear from the boy. Marie said she wanted Jake to know that she had no intention of embarrassing or scaring him by asking him to reveal himself. She also said she was willing to help Jake with his schooling if she could find him.

The watch was my grandfather’s. He hung it by his bed. The face was marked with elegant Roman numbers and the case was gold. My grandfather got it after his fifty years of devotion to his company. I often gazed at it longingly as I sat with my grandfather after school.
The day I told him of my success in the examinations, he was pleased, “You’ll be going to the new school next, Peter. Remember you’ll need plenty of patience. That’s the right way.” I nodded when handing him the watch.
The next morning my mother told me he had died in his sleep and left me his watch. For safety, my mother was to put it away until she considered me old enough to look after it. I protested so strongly that she finally agreed to hang it in the kitchen where I could always see it.
The summer soon ended and it was time for me to enter the new school. I never made friends easily, and for a time I got along well with some boys. One of them was a rich fellow whose way of impressing us was to parade his belongings before us. Everything Crawley had was better than ours — until he showed off his watch.
“I have a better watch than that,” I announced, attempting to impress them. “Well, show it to us,” Crawley sneered (冷笑) in disbelief. Embarrassed, I promised to bring it to them that afternoon.
Considering there was no way to persuade my mother to let me take the watch, I decided to wait for her to step outside and slip the watch into my pocket. So I did. After lunch, as I was too excited to wait for the return bus, I got on my bike.
I rode fast, excitement crowding in. At the sight of school, I sped up. Then out of nowhere, a little dog ran out into my path. I pulled at my brakes (刹车) so hard that the bike stopped suddenly and I fell over. I picked myself up and put a trembling hand into my pocket. Empty!

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Tripod’s story started one spring morning as I was finishing a morning surgery at the veterinary clinic (兽医诊所) I owned. I was writing up medical records of the surgery patients when my receptionist (接待员) stuck her head into my office. She told me there was a big cat lying outside with a seriously injured front leg. What’s worse, nobody knew whom it belonged to.
Then I sent two of my pre-vet students to pick up the poor cat while I went back to my record-keeping. But it wasn’t long before I heard the students returning with this newest patient who seemed to be in pretty bad condition.
I carefully checked up the injuries which seemed to be caused by the pressing of a heavy object. With the extremely horrible smell, I knew from years of experience this cat didn’t have an owner. “Well, then,” I sighed, “I’m not sure whether we are able to bring this cat back to life, but let’s give him our best shot anyway. Afterwards, let’s see if we can find a home for him. ”
Just then, when one of the students began touching the cat’s head gently, somewhere deep in the cat’s throat, a weak purr (呼噜声) began. As the student continued to pet the cat, I noticed the cat’s breathing became less laboured (缓慢而困难的).
When I performed the complicated operation, I whispered, “You’re a fighter, aren’t you, boy? You deserve a chance to live.” However, after the surgery, he lost one leg, and still struggled with life and death. Over the next few weeks, Tripod, the cat, went through many ups and downs, but I was sure about his resilience (快速恢复的能力). News about Tripod spread. A number of customers stopped by regularly to check on the progress of his recovery, including Mrs Melson, a pet lover.

But being honest should always be with us, as honesty is always regarded as a virtue. Every time I talk about the topic, something crowds in my mind as if it had just happened.
I was 16 when one morning, Dad told me I could drive him to Mijas and then take the car in a nearby garage to get it serviced. At that time, I had just passed the driving test, and I hardly had a chance to use the car, so I said yes without hesitation.
I drove my father to Mijas, promising to pick him up again at 4 p.m., then I went to a nearby garage, and put the car in there. Since I had several hours to spare, I decided to go to a movie theater near the garage to see the movie. However, I was so absorbed in the plot of the movie that I forgot the time. When the last movie finished, I looked at my watch: 6 p.m. I was two hours late!
I thought my father would be very angry if he knew what I was doing. And he would never let me drive again. So I decided to make up an excuse. Then, I drove to the appointed place, my father was sitting in a comer, waiting patiently. I first apologized for being late, then told him that I wanted to get there as soon as possible, but that something was wrong with some of the main parts of the car.
I would never forget the way he looked at me. “I’m very disappointed that you thought you had to lie to me, Jason.” My father looked at me again and said, “When you didn’t show up on time, I called the gas station and asked if there was anything wrong. They told me you never picked up the ear. So, you see, I know there’s nothing wrong with the car at all.”

8 . Nickenson Chery began at Florida National University (FNU) in 2008 as a radiology major. Midway through his career, Nickenson switched to Health Services Administration after realizing he’d prefer the medical field. But the career change came with stress, “I spent entire nights awake studying and doing homework. I’d consistently go to bed at 2 or 3 a. m., only to wake up early the next day and start over.” The hard work eventually paid off as Nickenson graduated from FNU with his Bachelor’s Degree in 2015.
When asked about his experience and impression of his time at FNU, he said, “I truly loved FNU. It was a great experience. I always felt at home and part of a family. If you need any help, professors and staff are always available. They give you all the tools necessary to get your work done and succeed. If it wasn’t for FNU, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I’ll always recommend FNU to anyone looking for a great education, regardless of what they want to study.”
Nickenson’s journey was just beginning, taking a long road that led him across the country searching for the perfect career. Nickenson Chery now works at Boston Children’s Hospital Trust, proving that whatever the struggles one faces perseverance and hard work will lead you to success.
Nickenson left these words to current students at FNU, “You have to know where you’re going. Don’t take anything for granted. If it wasn’t for FNU that taught me a lot of stuff in and out of the classroom, I would’ve never gotten this position. I have a degree from FNU; nothing can stop me.”

9 . Lexi is just a little girl from Canada who found herself in a heart-stopping situation. It started off as a normal car trip. Angela Shymanski, Lexi’s mom, was at the wheel, navigating (导航) the tough roads of the Rockies with her daughter Lexi and her baby Peter in the car. An unexpected animal ran into the road. Angela swerved (突然转向) to avoid the animal. Unfortunately, their car was off the road, falling down a steep embankment (路堤).
The crash was nothing short of terrifying. Angela ended up with a broken back. She was unconscious, and unable to help her babies. Meanwhile, baby Peter’s cries rang in disorder. But Lexi, only five years old, didn’t freeze. Instead, she showed courage that would leave many grown-ups in surprise.
She quickly jumped into action. The little girl, without even shoes on her feet, struggled free from her seatbelt and climbed the 40-foot embankment. Once she reached the top, Lexi did everything she could to make a passing car stop in order to get help for her mom and brother.
Lexi’s insistence finally paid off. A car stopped, and the people inside didn’t hesitate to help her call for emergency services. When the paramedics (护理人员) arrived, they found Angela in an extremely bad state, and her heart had stopped. Thankfully, they managed to bring her back.
Lexi’s dad, reflecting on the incident, couldn’t help but be amazed by his daughter’s bravery. He stressed how important it is for kids to be prepared for emergencies, shocked at how Lexi remembered and acted on what she had been taught. It’s a powerful reminder of what kids can do in key moments.
And Lexi’s heroism didn’t go unnoticed. She was awarded a Bronze Medal for Bravery by the police. But for the Shymanskis, the real prize was being back in each other’s arms, safe and sound.
