Once upon a time, there lived a poor but cheerful shoemaker. He was so happy that he sang all day long. The children loved to stand around his window to listen to him.
Next door to the shoemaker lived a rich man. He used to sit up all night to count his gold. In the morning, he went to bed, but he could not sleep because of the sound of the shoemaker’s singing. One day, he thought of a way to stop the singing. He wrote a letter to the shoemaker inviting him over for a cup of tea.
The shoemaker came at once, and to his great surprise, the rich man gave him a bag of gold as a gift. The shoemaker took the bag and thanked the rich man. When he returned home, the shoemaker couldn’t wait to open the bag. He had never seen so much gold in his life! He sat down at his bench and began, carefully, to count it. The children watched through the window.
There was so much there that the shoemaker was afraid to let it out of his sight. So he took it to bed with him. But he could not sleep for worrying about it. So he got out of bed and went to hide it in the attic (阁楼), but he was not sure if that was a good place.
Very early in the morning, he got up and brought his gold down from the attic. He had decided to hide it up the chimney (烟囱) instead. But after breakfast, he thought it would be safer in the chicken house. So he hid it there. But he was still uneasy, and in a little while he dug a hole in the garden and buried his bag of gold in it.

This week was busier than usual, and I was in need of sleep or rest today. All I wanted to do was go home and enjoy a bowl of good hot soup. But when I saw my daughter’s car, I knew that it was Bryan’s night. Since his parents separated, I had tried to have my six-year-old grandson spend a few hours with me at least once a week. I had always tried to make it a special time for him. We did many interesting things. Bryan loved all these activities, and so did I.
But today I had to give up our evening. I knew how tired I was, so I just said, “Bryan, I’m sorry. Tonight I don’t feel like having fun or playing games. We’ll have our night together some other time.”
He said, “I like soup, Grandma.” I knew he actually meant “Please don’t send me away. Please let me stay”. And I saw the shadow in Bryan’s eyes. Something else was changing. Maybe he thought I wouldn’t want to have him come anymore — not tonight, not next week, not ever. Finally, I said OK. And his eyes lighted up. After I put the soup on the desk and turned on the TV, I fell asleep.
When I woke up, there was a coat over my legs, and the soup was gone. Bryan was on the floor, reading a coloring book and watching a television show at the same time. The poor boy must have been so bored! When he found I was awake, he ran over and gave me a big hug. “I love you, Grandma,” he said. “Haven’t we had a nice time together?” His big smile and happy eyes told me that this time he meant exactly what he was saying. That was the keyword—together. We had done nothing exciting or special. But we were together.

It was a bright and sunny day. Daniel woke up and jumped out of bed, ready for a full day outside. He ran down the stairs and sat down at the kitchen table. His mom was making pancakes: Daniel’s favorite. She made pancakes every Saturday morning.
“What do you want to do today?” she asked Daniel.
“I think I’m going to go exploring in our backyard,” he told her. “It’s so nice outside!” Daniel quickly ate up his pancakes and rushed upstairs to get dressed. He put on a red T-shirt and jeans.
“Alright, Mom, I’ll be back later!”
“Don’t go too far!” she told him.
When he opened the door, Daniel felt a rush of warm air. He smiled at the sun. Perfect hiking weather, he thought. Daniel loved his backyard. There were plenty of tall trees. If he walked far enough, he would reach a lake. When it was really warm outside, he could walk in the water to cool off. The water was always cold.
The leaves were just beginning to grow on the trees after the cold winter. Daniel wandered for a bit. He picked up a long stick and used it to clear a way through the forest.
Suddenly, Daniel saw something in the distance that wasn’t a rock or a leaf. When he got closer, he knelt down to investigate. He found a small injured bird between the fallen leaves. He looked around and saw a bird’s nest sitting on a branch. He carefully climbed up the trunk of the tree with the nest to get a closer look. The nest was empty, and he didn’t see any birds around. Then, he ran back to his house.

One day, King Sisyphus of Corinth was trying to solve the city’s fresh water problem. He happened to look up and saw Zeus fly by. The king of gods was carrying a lovely river spirit (小精灵) in his arms.
“That Zeus,” sighed (叹气) King Sisyphus. “What a trouble-maker!”
Soon after, the river god Asopus flew by. “Sisyphus! Have you seen my daughter?” he asked.
“If you give my city a source of fresh water, I will tell you what I saw,” King Sisyphus shouted back. Immediately, a clear stream (水流) of fresh water appeared.
“Zeus took her that way,” the king pointed.
The king knew Zeus would be angry when he found out what he had done. But Corinth badly needed a source of fresh water. And finally, it had one.
Sure enough, Zeus was very angry. He told his brother Hades (the god of the underworld) to take Sisyphus to the underworld immediately!
“When they tell you I am dead, do not put a gold coin under my tongue,” King Sisyphus said quietly to his wife. As a good wife, she did exactly as the king had told her.
Because Sisyphus was an important person, Hades himself met him at the River Styx, the entrance to the underworld. Because no gold coin was placed under his tongue(舌头), the king arrived as a poor beggar.
“Where is your gold coin?” Hades asked. “How can you pay for a trip across the River Styx and arrive in the underworld?”
King Sisyphus hung his head in shame. “I had a terrible wife. She didn’t give me anything after I had died.”
“Go right back there and teach that woman some manners!” Hades raised his voice. He then sent Sisyphus back to Earth. The king became alive again.
Sisyphus and his wife laughed when he told her about the experience. But he never told it to anyone else. You never know when the gods are listening!

5 . 31 years ago, Allen Johnson was a passenger in a van when a truck hit it. Johnson survived, but his left arm was crushed beyond repair, and he lost his memory for two years.
His pilot license was removed and he could no longer follow his passion for diving. But he had been sailing since he was 16. So, in 2004, he decided to buy a boat, fitting it out so he could sail it single-handedly. “I didn’t know then if I could sail with one hand.“ he says. ”But I had always thought I could do anything if I put my mind to it.”
Within a year, Johnson had taken on the challenge of being the first one-armed sailor to tour around the British Isles. Then he crossed the Atlantic alone in 2008. Last year he became the first sailor with a disability to tour around the globe.
Sailing single-handed for weeks requires mental, as well as physical, strength, especially when you are alone. So how does he do it? It’s a question that makes the yachtsman (帆船运动员) laugh. “When you have seven children it’s lovely to have a little time on your own! It’s awesome,” he jokes.” I do a log every hour, and my diary, and I read a few books. I have very little sleep.” “I’m a sociable person: I do like lots of people around. Answering emails and chatting over Facebook can help stop any loneliness,” he adds.
When Johnson made his first Atlantic crossing, he was disappointed to have his peace and quiet life broken by his arrival on land. But, he says, he threw himself into meeting new people. In between adventures, he likes sailing with people who haven’t tried it before or get involved in yacht races with friends. Perhaps the main reason for his success in adjusting to life after a big adventure, he says, is that he always has an idea for a new one in his back pocket. “It keeps me ticking over—there’s always something new to do. I just like challenges and one leads to another.”
1. Why couldn’t Allen Johnson continue his passion for diving?A.He lost his left arm. | B.His license was due. |
C.He had a new hobby. | D.His memory was poor. |

It was Christmas Eve. I was 16 and feeling sad because my dad told me there was not enough money to buy the dress I wanted. We did the housework early that night. So I figured Dad wanted extra time for us to spend together. Instead, he dressed himself again and went outside. “Come on, Elizabeth,” he said eagerly. “Dress yourself warmly! It’s cold outside.”
Outside, I became even more upset. Not only wasn’t I getting the dress, now Dad was dragging me out in the cold. There, in front of the house, already was a big sled (雪橇). Whatever we were going to do wasn’t going to be a quick job. So I unwillingly climbed up and sat next to a big box, the cold already biting at me. We pulled in front of the woodshed (柴棚) and started loading wood into the box. Finally, I asked, “Dad, what are you doing?” “Have you been to Mrs. Clark’s lately?” he asked. Mrs. Clark lived about two miles down the road from us. Her husband had passed away the year before, leaving her with three children to raise on her own.
“Yeah,” I said. “Why?” “I rode by just today,” Dad said. “Little Jake was out digging around in the woodpile (柴火堆), trying to find a few pieces of wood to struggle through the cold winter. They’re out of wood, Elizabeth.” That’s all he said. Then Dad went to the kitchen, fetching a big bag of flour, a side of bacon and something else in a small bag and asking me to load them into the big box too. I tried to think through what my dad was doing. We did have a big woodpile, meat and flour, so we could spare some, but I knew we didn’t have any money. Mrs. Clark had closer neighbors than us. Why was it our concern? Nearly half an hour later, we made it to her house.

When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.
So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail? His reply: “Because I love your stories. If you’re willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try.
I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith (银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the horse’s mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice.
What did the horse think, as he sped through the night? Did he get tired? Have doubts? Did he want to quit? I sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere’s horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them.
When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again.” I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn’t win, I wouldn’t care.
